Andres Iniesta’s Tribute to Dani Jarque

dani jarque

Nice touch from Spain’s goalscorer Andres Iniesta today, who celebrated his 116th minute World Cup winning strike by whipping off his jersey to reveal a handwritten message on his vest type thingy. The message read: “Dani Jarque siempre con nostros” (Dani Jarque always with us) in reference to the Esanyol player who passed away at the age of 26 after a heart attack in the summer of 2009.

Iniesta was inevitably booked for removing his shirt, which I’m sure he won’t worry about too much having won the World Cup and paid homage to a deceased friend/colleague, plus what’s one yellow card buried amongst the thousand others in this final? But this incident makes me think that maybe shirt removal bookings should be dependenet on quality of underlying t-shirt message, as in: tribute to deceased player after scoring in the World Cup final = you get a pass.

After the WC celebration, Sergio Ramos was wearing a similar shirt in tribute to fellow Sevilliano Antonio Puerta.

Legendary. Iniesta and Jarque played youth team futbol together in Barcelona.

Technically… did he receive a yellow card for it?

Nice gesture. I guess FIFA should allow the display of messages that don't contain nationalist or religious messages. What's offensive in remembering a friend that passed away?

You can't expect referees to be able to understand every message written in every foreign tongue that a player shows under his shirt. The “removal of the shirt” rule is a stupid one, however you cannot discriminate the punishment based on the message's nature.

It's either a yellow for all cases, or no yellow at all.

I think the problem is remediable by simply creating a comitee that deals with that, so that players can submit requests to display a message. That way, referees will be prepared in advance and everyones happy.

Spain deserved it , no doubt, although it was quite a disrupted game. Except for a few contra attacks, Dutch brought nothing. Best team won.

Andres Iniesta didn't care about the yellow.
He knew that he'd get the yellow if he took off the t-shirt, but he did it anyway because Dani Jarque deserves this tribute.

    Grande Iniesta! Grande España!

That's not a bad idea Dumitru. A “get approval in advance” type of thing.
