A Jackal without an Invite

In his weekly look at World Cup 2010, our South Africa blogger Ben takes to task an ignorant reporter from the Sunday Times. As we are seeing with this year’s World Cup, some people are intent on injecting history and politics into football. When a global event is held in countries with sometimes troubled pasts like Germany and South Africa it is inevitable that people will take potshots at the hosts and bring up subjects that are often uncomfortable to talk about. Show me a country that doesn’t have something wrong with its past and that is perfect in the present and you’ll be showing me a country that doesn’t exist. One good thing about the World Cup is that it also shines light on the many good things about the host countries. I’m sure that the vast majority of the people who go to Germany this summer and South Africa four years from now will come away impressed by each country.

I don’t think the article was taking a shot at South Africa’s past, it was talking about will they be ready for 2010 and how one of the mayor’s( can’t rememember if it was Cape Town or J’Burg) had put the block on building a new stadium as FIFA required.

Also FIFA has an unbeliveable list of requirements around power supplies, communications etc, plus backup systems not only to the stadiums but to the surrounding areas.
