Zinedine Zidane Wins 2006 World Cup Golden Ball

By: WC Bob | July 10th, 2006 | 1,071 Comments »

After ending his career with a red card in extra time of the World Cup final, France’s Zinedine Zidane was named the Golden Ball award winner, given to the most outstanding player of the tournament. Zidane edged out Italian captain Fabio Cannavaro in voting decided by media members. It is the third time in a row that a player from the losing side in the championship team won the award.

Zidane was great at times in this tournament but frankly I don’t think his play was good enough to merit him winning the award. Perhaps members of the media saw it as an opportunity to honor a player who has been great throughout the years, but I think they made the wrong choice. I would have gone with Cannavaro.

The other awards from the 2006 World Cup:

Golden Shoe (top scorer): Miroslav Klose (Germany)

Most Entertaining Team: Portugal

Best Goalkeeper: Gianluigi Buffon (Italy)

Best Young Player: Lukas Podolski (Germany)

Team Fair Play Award: Spain and Brazil

Join me all in demanding the return of the Golden Ball from Zidane. Everyday that passes with it his possession tarnishes the award for those who won it in the past.

Shame Shame and Shame.

In the 110th minute of the World Cup final against Italy, Zidane was sent off with a red card for headbutting Marco Materazzi in the chest in an off the ball incident. Video replays showed Materazzi holding Zidane and pulling his shirt lightly after Italy had captured the ball in an attack by the French team. Materazzi let go, and after a brief exchange of words, Zidane walked away from him. Then, the Italian appeared to be saying something. Zidane turned around, took a few short steps, lowered his head and butted Materazzi in the chest, sending him to the ground. Although play was halted, referee Horacio Elizondo did not appear to have seen the confrontation. After the intervention of the fourth official Luis Medina Cantalejo, Zidane was shown the red card and sent off. He gave the captain’s armband to Willy Sagnol (in order to hand it to Fabien Barthez) and exited the pitch. au … ak ra kartvelebis paradia ?:PPP.. magari gamixarda sakartvelos drosha ro davinaxe martali zveli magram mainc… ascorebs….. ZIZUUUUUUUUUUU magari igrokia jer kacia da mere fexburtelia da egaa mtavar… Okay now I’ll say some words in English…. Next world cup is ours….>!!!!…>!>. JvARoSNEBI GITEEEEVT!>….. jigrebi vart kartvelebi!////… “Thank you, Thank you Zidane for everything you gave to the soccer’s world. I am sad that someone so big, someone that million and million of people love quited the field like that. As the french commentattor said during the final game ” Oh no zizou, not after everything you have done for France”.
This is true, Zidane did not only a lot for France but for the world. In the New York Times the day after Brazil- France game, you could read two comment:
one from Pele ” Zidane is one of the best player of the history”
and one from BEckanauer: ” Zidane: The best player of history”.”

Thanks for this Johan.

What is so sad is that there is no one right now that even comes close to matching his artistry and genius with the ball. I have admired many footballers and I do not say he was equal to Maradona or Pele (and they were both forwards anyway, Zidane was a midfielder). But I *loved* Zidane, not just admired. At the very least, not within the last few generations of players, no other footballer created as much magic and beauty on the pitch as he did. What happened a month ago today in Germany was the deliberate destruction of a genius by coarse, crude, ugly football.

Zidane was pure art on the pitch. He’s irreplaceable. zidane is the best player of this fifa world cup 2006, and will always be. There has been a lot of criticisms about zizou and i believe that he has already learnt his lesson.
In the very first place, the one who started this incident (you all know who he is!) should be blamed and not zizou. If that italian had not said anything provocative, this incident will not even happen and the french would already have won this world cup. The french lost their most important player at the most important juncture and the italians made use of this advantage to win this world cup. I am not trying to say that the italians do not deserve to be the winner, but to say that the french are just as good. But just because of this incident that final match wasn’t a fair one.
AND…ZIZOU RIGHTLY DESERVES THE GOLDEN BALL AWARD Being a soccer player myself, I know and hear a lot of bad language on the field. As long as ignorants still exist in this world, it will never stop. We all know Zidane made a mistake but then we don’t and we will never know why he did what he did. Let us be honest, the man is just a human being just like you and I. We definitely know Zidane a great player and those who do not agree, you must have just watched Zidane in World Cup 2006 for the first time. Regardless, who has a right besides GOD of judging one another? Also, whether there was or wasn’t any racism remarks in this incident, there is a lot of racism in sports (especially in European soccer) and this is not going to stop. GOD never stated that a particular religion, skin colour, continent, country, etc. is better than another. This is all man made business. For those complaining about Zidane setting a bad example for their children, maybe this is the time for you to teach your children about religion, race, etc. equality. Let us not forget that Zidane apologized to the world, especially the children. Don’t forget the man is a father too, and I don’t think he wants his children to repeat what he did, but I’m sure he trains and teaches them about equality. He has been there himself. For those lucky ones who have never and will never face racism of any kind, you are blessed. Zidane, regardless of what happened, you still have my respect, I still do and will always look up to you as a great soccer player, and hero. I very much appreciate what you do for our children of the world and keep up the great work. Congratulations on your Golden Ball. Well deserved, no matter what. You will be missed in South Africa, 2010.
