The French look unstoppable at this point and they have a history of spoiling Italian dreams of grandeur in football. If the French don’t win in regulation they’ll beat Italy where they are most vulnerable. Penalty kicks. I vote France. Allez les Bleus!!!!

What a blah world cup this has been.

Why whenever a team is beaten fairly, their fan start acting idiotically. People accept it you lost to a better team and support the good play. I understand you are bitter, but at the same time you have to be realistic and decent too. The penalty against Cravallho was very for everyone to see, there was no way the ref could have ignored that one unlike C.ronaldo’s constant obvious dive which really made me sick.
Too great defensive teams made it to final, we should see the battle between the two best defenders in the world and best friends, Lilian Thuram and Fabio Cannavaro. If you asked me these two guys deserve a big statue in their nations. Lets enjoy the masters at work on sunday and of course lets not forget the grand master Zizou “Zidane”. I hope we will see a great game worthy of the occassion.

I’m afraid it’s going to be Italy, 2-0, unless the French draw another favorable referee. I was very excited by the French result against Brazil, but the result against Portugal was wholly undeserved, and I am so sickened by Henry’s successful dives in the Spain and Portugal matches that I’m actually thinking of doing something I haven’t done since the knock-out rounds of 1982–root for Italy. At least their result against Germany was both courageous and just.

PS Anyone who tries to justify the PK call in the France-Portugal match will have to achieve the impossible–explain how the *many* instances of greater contact in the French box impeding Portugal’s players were justly never called penalties. It can’t be done: once again in this WC, a referee decided his role was to decide the result rather than simply officiate (and let the players themselves decide it)–this happens more in soccer (I call it this for my American compatriots) than in any sport except figure skating, and at least in figure skating there are nine judges you have to have on your side, not just one. Go ahead, attack my comments as ignorant because there’s an American flag under my posting, but I think FIFA is thoroughly corrupt and needs to be overthrown (and not just because of what happened today)

I think Italy will win this time as Italy has better performance than France in this year’s world cup..

France only managed to score against Brazil from a free kick with a pathetic Brazilian defence, and also defeated Portugal by the same low score from a penalty from an obvious dive from Henry – look at the slow motion replay to see the theatrics of Henry, such a dishonest player among many at this WC. Italy is a far better organised team and has beaten better teams than those beaten by France. Italy will easily nullify Zidane and France is a lame duck.

I always admired Henry as a player, but what the hell is he doing trying too milk freekicks every time he looks like he’s going to lose the ball.

Itlay would win 2-1, for the simple reason they are playing better now than before, I would have said France after their performance against Brazil but the way they went through with Portugal……Brazil now seems more like a one night stunt -:). Italy really took the fight to Germany and nullified the “home ground” advantage by their awasome attacking game. They should have scored much earlier. Anyways everything said and done Italy is taking the trophy home and Zidane retires with all the glory he deserves but not something he would have liked to have in his retirment package the “World Cup trophy”!!!!

The australians are getting on the nerves on most people around the globe! I happen to work in an international environment and funny but the ones who moan the most are also the australians. The English were pissed for a day or too, thenn continued watching the cup, the Africans, the dutch as well. But the aussies no!Too bad, they put up a good show for their first performance, unfortunately I’m afraid they’ll be remembered for their whining rather than their games.Listening to them, every team but theirs has had favored refs, dives..etc It shows only one thing, they are sore losers. I wonder if they will maon the same way when they are sent home after a couple of games in september in the rugby WC.

BTW, nobody can say clearly that it was a penalty against POR. There was contact, very light, totally not intentional, totally harmless. Henry had the choice of diving or going for it. He dived. I’m not questioning the refs decision. Anybody who expects all the refs calls to be perfect knows nothing about the game (it is a game, after all)… Can’t complain. POR creted enough good chances but the “old problem” emerged – lack of ability in materializing a goal out of a perfectly good chance. LACK OF CORING efficiency (why in the hell didn’t Scolari put Nuno Gomes earlyer and why did he put H Postiga?)…

To finish, everybody seems to agree that POR is the devil but both FRA (victory against SPA and POR) and ITA (victory over AUS) capitalized a lot out of diving an stunts of the sort. POR didn’t capitalize and got the image. Life’s unfair, we know… Mind you, I say they (FRA & ITA) deserve to reach the final and they are super teams. BUT… Why is POR the devil and all the others saints, when POR gave a lot of swet, worked a lot, and apart from some weak spots, has also a great, great team…

With another man up front, FRA could have had as many penalties as they wanted, POR would have taken it home… Didn’t happen. Good show. All the best to FRA and ITA (also to ENG, but surelly not to HOL).

I’m not Australian but I am posting from there.

Yes, I agree that Australians tend to be both bad winners and losers but really only in rugby & cricket.
In this instance however they have a right to be bitter as at worst the Grosso / Neil foul was an in direct free kick and they also had shocking decisions against them in the Croatia & Japan & Brazil games. Nobody knows what would have happened in extra time against Italy so there is no closure for the new Australian fan. You also need to allow for the fact that older Australian fans have been in the shadow of other football codes played in the country forever and for once everyone in Australia was discovering football. (The other codes are high contact sports so diving is regarded as being unmanly)

Let them have a whinge about being robbed as other countries have done the same before them in other world cups.You also have to remenber that Australians are very passionate about their sports, its probably the most culturally significant characteristic of the country and for Australians second place is the first loser.

As for England they imploded as usual but played the better with only 10 men.

The contest between France and Italy in a way sums up this WC nicely, doesn’t it…? People might be wahing and ohing a mouthwatering match-up between Zidane and Totti, and Viera and Cannavaro, but to me its between two of the best divers in the cup, Henry and Grosso. Though both might have scored spectacularly in other games, that doesn’t take away from this WC the stink it has accumulated because of how it was officiated.

My head says italy given the obvious class of the italians and the obvious dependence of France on Zidanne who has to shoulder all the pressure in the game.

But my heart still roots for France, not because of any love for them, but because i won’t have Italy being called WCs for the next 4 years.

I just hope it will be a great and fair game as Germany-Italy was…

But anyway France beated Italy in the 98 and in the 2000 so let us win this one ;) :D

When all else fails, Italy doesn’t mind going to penalties. France WILL mind. Italy, in spite of only getting a very late victory DID a convincing job against GER. FRA deserved the victory yesterday, but were not the better team. They didn’t convince me, as penatly or not (personaly, I don’t really care if it was penalty or not, cos if a team wants to get the WC MUST be above these things and POR did create chances, but failed in scoring, so fair is fair), with a proper striker up front, POR would have won. Not easily, but would have won.

I also don’t believe Barthez (played so bad yesterday) can hold Toni, Totti and friends… ;-)

Italy is going to win the world cup by either 2-0 or 2-1. France won by single goal against Brazil who are defensivily weak and not so good Portugal. I feel they struggle to break Italian Defence which is well led by Cannavaro. Italy has a depth in the squad ,which France lacks.

Also age factor matters a lot in the final outcome as,their average age of france squad is around 30. With 4 matches in 15 days, I think Zidene will struggle though he has the ability to win the match on his day.

This Italian team has impressed. France should be careful with Barthez in goal. He has not impressed. He is not up to his form which he has displayed in the past tournaments. I will not predict a final score outcome, but what I will say is that the Squadra Azzurri will win. This sport is a team sport, the Azzurri have been playing as a team. France on the other hand have solely relyed on ZZ. One player can only take a team so far.

As an Aussie who has admittedly had a lot to say on this site (Materazzi was wrongly sent off, Grosso didn’t dive but it was never a penalty): Forza Italia!

Grosso’s finish v Germany was worthy of putting any side into the Final.

If Italy are beaten by Henry or Zidane I will celebrate that as well. (Although I’m disgusted by Henry’s play-acting against Puyol in the Spain match.)

Italy showed with their desire in extra-time v Germany that they would be worthy champions.

Again, my support there is only marginal. Zidane has a chance to play a great game and put himself right up there with Pele and Maradona.

Italy is a more complete team than France and I think that they will win on Sunday.

France have relied too much on Zidane and to me the French team looked tired against Portugal.

Italy seems to get stronger as the game goes on and if the match is played like the one against Germany, then it would not surprise me to see goals scored late in the game again.

It’s strange how being a supporter of one team blinds people from reality. If we consider Thiery henry’s penalty against portugal which I think was a correct one regardless whether he dived, jumped or whatever the replays showed there was a foul and a correct one. Then the question which arises is what are we to consider the Fabio grosso dive against Australia, maybe a super dive or something like that. That play really was shamefull, I felt sorry for the impressive Lucas Neil he didn’t deserve to be cheated that way. People…just have a look at the Italian team..their defense is like a cement wall: Cannavaro, Grosso, Nesta, Zambrotta. They have some of the best forwards: Toni, Gilardino, Inzaghi. They are gifted with the best goalkeeper in all of FIFA, Gianluigi Buffon. France is a good team, i admit, but they dramatise way too much and their heads have been bloated with ego every since they defeated Brazil. They have good players, zidane, henry and ribery are great, but in the end, italy can contain them and win the match 2-0.

Welch, dude….I thought the same way as you regarding the supposed dive of Grosso, initially (Australia match). Later that night I watched the replay. Watch it again in slow motion. That was no dive, it was a deliberate trip and the sad thing is, is that it robbed Italy of a very potential square goal. If you wanna see a team that takes alot of dives and pulls alot of dirty stunts watch Portugal play. Glad to see Germany prevailed over them. Italy 2-0 tomorrow….bet on it dudes! Although I am Italian, i have to admit the french team is so much more smarter, calmer, and with greater midfield control.. We, hot-tempered italians, will have to give our respects to this brilliant and cosmopolitan french team. At least the immigration issue is discussed in France instead of being a taboo subject in our dear Italy.

I think the only team worse at taking dives and whining to the refs for fake fouls than Portugal is france and I think that was obvious yesterday.

Zidane is a clown and he has a temper and the italians exposed it!! Its what you call sledging!! It’s a very clever tactic!!

It doesn’t matter what was said, Zidane was the captain and had to keep his cool and lead his team and in reacting he let his team and country down….
