World Cup Countdown: The Final Hours

By: WC Bob | June 9th, 2006 | 10 Comments »

Back in December some crazy cats from a company called BootsnAll were foolish enough to hand me the keys to this blog and they told me to not stop writing until the end of the World Cup. After 1,096 posts – some drivel, some fun, and some even about football – the moment has arrived for the World Cup to actually kick off. It is about friggin’ time!

One of the best things about being involved with this project is that I have been able to learn so much about the 32 teams in the tournament from our various bloggers stationed all over the world. I have also learned a lot from all of you who read the blog and leave your comments – more than 5,300 comments to date!

While I still don’t know the starting backline for Tunisia (shoot me, ok?), I do know they have a good defense and, most importantly, I am excited to see them play. I am excited to see all the teams play. I want to see the players that I have both praised and mocked finally lace them up and decide the best team on the field. I don’t have one rooting interest. I have 32.

For very personal and selfish reasons this will be a World Cup I will never forget. I sincerely hope that it turns out to be a memorable tournament for each and every one of you too.

I wish all of your teams the best of luck in the quest to finish second to my beloved Angola.

Bob, I have really enjoyed and will continue to enjoy your posts. This blog is the first thing I check when I fire up my office computer in the morning.

Good luck with Angola, I hope they do well except against my national team (Portugal).

Thanks, Bob, it’s been cool and it will only get better.

Funny thing about the picture you have on the article: the guy is holding an Angola banner, but he’s using a Flamengo t-shirt. Flamengo is the most popular club in Brazil and because of the colors, it’s pretty popular on Angola. That picture is from when Angola finally got their World Cup slot, and the picture has appeared on lots of Brazilian newspapers.

Bob,

I’m a late and somewhat befuddled addition to your readership, but I think I’ve got the basics down: Brazil good, New Zealand bad, right??

Well, you don’t need to have much of a footie (dig the jargon!) background to enjoy this blog and I have happily done so for the past two weeks as I flood my body with the requisite caffeine, vitamins and fluids to get me to a state of coherence where I can write irreverent comments about Romania, five star hotels and the Pope.

I’m very excited for your big day and I may even try to find a TV and bask in magic. I’m just sorry this will only last for a month. Where will I get the inside scoop on Keener’s various fluids and gases after that?
