World Cup Comebacks
With the roster deadline looming for the World Cup teams, there are bound to be a few more surprises as well as some cool stories about some of the players on the less famous teams. A couple of players we are rooting to make the trip to Germany are Togo striker Backirou Salou and Ghana defender Eric Addo. Both players are in the running to make their respective countries teams even though neither has played internationally since the African Nations Cup eight years.
Of the two, we are most rooting for Salou the most. The 35-year-old is a little long in the tooth but in his prime he cut his stripes at clubs such as Borussia Dortmund, MSV Duisburg and Eintracht Frankfurt.
It might be a bit unfair to compare him to Roger Milla as this story does, but the thought of an old veteran paired up top with a young stud like Emmanuel Adebayor could add a bit of flair to the Togo team. We’ll certainly be scanning Togo’s roster for his name when it is announced on Monday.
By the way, even though the roster submissions are due on May 15, FIFA won’t publish them until May 18 because of “administrative” reasons.

[...] Meanwhile, Ghana coach Ratomir Djukovic continues to shuffle the chairs on the deck, announcing a World Cup squad that is much different than the Black Stars team that played so poorly in the African Nations Cup in January. The World Cup team features 10 players who did not take part in the CAN, including PSV Eindhoven midfielder Eric Addo who hasn’t played an international match for his country for eight years. Ghana has some talent, but the question is whether it will come together as a team in time to be a threat in Group E. Based on your comments, it doesn’t look like many of you expect Ghana to escape their group. We have to agree, but they’ll put up a good fight. [...]
