Winners and Losers of the World Cup Week
Ahhh, the week that was. We saw a German team on life support come back to life. We saw players have their World Cup dreams shattered by injuries, while others learned they will heal in time for Germany. We saw our share of scandals off the field and impressive play on the field. We saw that some will win and some will lose and some of them will sing the blues. To help you keep track of it all, we present our winners and losers of the past week.
Winners
Jurgen Klinsmann – The much maligned German coach saw his team put on a dazzling second half performance featuring four goals against the United States. This was exactly what his team needed to restore its shattered
confidence.
Romario – No matter what you can say about the guy, there is no denying that he is the master of keeping himself in the news even though he is now 40 and won’t be anywhere near Germany this summer.
Children – Kids in Argentina will get to watch the World Cup in the classroom and kids everywhere else will be able to use our official note to get out of class to watch their favorite team.
Jan Koller – The Czech gunner is likely to be healthy and happy in time for the World Cup, which might make up for Roman Tyce being out for the World Cup.
Luis Arteta – Earning props at Everton, but will it be enough to earn a spot in an talent-laden Spain midfield?
Daniele De Rossi – Proving that fair play is still alive in the modern game.
Losers
Vinicio Luna – The General Coordinator of the Ecuadorian Selection and former team captain was arrested on allegations of human trafficking.
Brotherly love – Bonaventure and Salomon Kalou won’t be playing one another after all now that Salomon’s attempt to become a Dutch citizen has been denied. At least their parents will be able to see Bonaventure suit up for Ivory Coast this summer.
Wembley Stadium – The venerable new old stadium is crumbling faster than England’s chances of winning the World Cup.
Lazy French Strikers – You might actually have to do a little work this summer.
Iranian News – The New Year in Iran means no news for our stellar news-starved blogger. The least they could do is throw him a bone and cancel another friendly.
Music Lovers – Two guys from Leeds laying down the official T&T song? That is not music to our ears.
