Will Any Goals this Year be Among the World Cup’s Greatest?

By: WC Bob | June 7th, 2006 | 13 Comments »

Anybody else ready for some football? I’m been eating, dreaming and thinking about the World Cup for a long time now and I can’t wait for the games to begin on Friday. One thing I have been doing to pass the time and to further my excitement is watching highlights and games from previous World Cup competitions. The video below is a fairly nice compilation of some of the best goals in World Cup history. I’m not sure which player on which team is going to do it, but my guess is we are going to see at least one goal from the 2006 tournament make it on the all-time top 10 list.

Nice clip, but I am missing:
* Ronaldinho’s 2002 lob vs. England (poor Seaman…)
* Bergkamp’s 1998 gem v. Argentina

Yes Bergkamp’s priceless gem against argentina in ‘98 is a no brainer in a top 10 greatest world cup goals.

Also Ronaldinho’s 2002 goal against England’s poor old David Seaman is surely worthy of a top 10 spot

I have to agree that Bergkamp’s ‘98 Cup semi-final goal is required viewing. A siblime display…in just three touches he brilliantly covered the three key aspects of football; trapping, dribbling, and shooting. For me, it’s the greatest goal in Cup history. The pure elagance of it never ceases to amaze me, no matter how many times I watch it.

Neeskens, Cruyff and Haan have all scored goals that merit consideration. Some anti-Oranje bias here? ;)

Where’s Bergkamp’s ‘98 goal? In my opinion, greatest goal in WC history. Beautifully played and timed as well - a game winner in the 89th minute!

Carlos Alberto’s goal is overrated in my opinion. They spent more time showing the build up to the goal rather than putting the emphasis on the goal it self.

I agree that the Carlos Alberto goal is not quite top-10 worthy, certainly over Bergkamp’s.

However, it is emblematic of what made that Brazil ‘70 team so special. Great team play, anyone can come up in the attack, and at the center of it all Pele’s vision and skill. It is a top-five sequence, but maybe not a top ten goal.

“Will Any Goals this Year be Among the World Cup’s Greatest?”Bob asks.

No.

The Belgian defense isn’t around to help anyone score special goals.
