What Happens if Ivory Coast Boycott the World Cup?

By: WC Bob | February 27th, 2006 | 6 Comments »

There is talk today that Ivory Coast might not play in the World Cup as long as warring factions in the country continue to fight. While it certainly is sad to see politics and football mixing together, it does raise the interesting question of what happens to the tournament if Ivory Coast isn’t there. Does the second place team from their African qualifying group, Cameroon, take their spot or is there another system in place to pick World Cup replacement teams? Anyone know how this works?

Well it’s not sad to see politics and football mixing when it’s for a good cause like this one. If it can help to stop fighting and bring all the population of Ivory Coast, let be it even if it’s for a short period of time !

Cote d’Ivoire will be severely reprimanded by FIFA if the rumours are true and they carry out their threat not to play in the World Cup. Its never happened before where a team boycotts the World Cup so this will be a first. Personally, I think Cote d’Ivoire should honour their qualification and keep the politics out of it. Boycotting the tournament will not solve the problems in their country so they should just get on with it.

Who were the last teams to lose out on qualifying?

Perhaps Norway should play Turkey in a play-off, and the winner of that could play the winner Uraguay and Bahrain. Did I leave anyone out?

Does this mean that Group E will now officially be recognized as the Group of Death?

Sports usually brings peace to a country, since every faction is united in the will to fight other nations peacefully.

If the sad rumor proves to be true, I hope Cameroon will play. But the world won’t stop for the Ivory Coast. Their voices will be silent, and that is the opposite of working for their cause.

[...] There are plenty of social issues out there as well that deserve our attention. The fact that women weren’t allowed to watch Iran’s national team play last month is an outrage. The continued violence in Cote d’Ivoire is something more countries around the world should care about. Ending racism in sport. And on and on. [...]
