What are your World Cup Superstitions?

By: WC Bob | May 25th, 2006 | 23 Comments »

Over on the main FIFA sight there is a fun article that talks about the various superstitions that some of the players and coaches have. From phobias of colors to numerology to rubbing a bald keeper’s head before every match, there are no shortage of rituals and routines that are performed in the name of good luck. I’m guessing that the players aren’t alone when it comes to superstitions. If you are like me, you’ll try anything to bring your team a bit of luck.

When I am supporting my local club, I will wear the same shirt until they lose. The team hardly ever goes on long winning streaks so most of my shirts are in good condition. I’m also a big believer in standing in the exact same spot for every match. Things just don’t feel right when I am not there.

For the World Cup, I plan of wearing my Angola jersey each day they play. Heck, if they win their opening match against Portugal I may never take the thing off. I’m sure I’ll develop some other superstitions as the tournament progresses and I see what works and what doesn’t.

How about you? Do you have any rituals or routines when you support your team?

When I lived in France during the World Cup in ‘98, the only match I attended was France’s opening match against South Africa in Marseille.
There I bought a replica Zidane jersey and watched them trounce SA 3-0. Every match thereafter I always wore my Zidane jersey on gameday with the ticket stub in my left back pocket and they went undefeated for the rest of the tournament and ultimately won it all…
I continue this ritual whenever France plays, even during friendlies. although it really hasn’t helped the team that much since France-Italy in Euro 2000 : /

I always wear my Italy scarf when they play. I’ve almost chewed a hole through it over the years but it is my good luck charm.

I always wear the same shirt during the world cup. Is more a method them a supersticion once that is not related with “chance or winning” but propper occasion to wear each shirt.

This year, I bought a 1958 Brazilian T-shirt and I’ll be wearing it during Brazil’s games. For the other games I’ll wear a green and yellow Fifa world Cup T-shirt that a friend brought to me from Germany

@ henry, awesome! :)

i used to wear my good luck tee during the semi-final between croatia and france @ the stade de france | st. denis in paris, but not only did it not help, i missed two of the three goals. ever since, i brainmail my side positive vibes and if i am focused and totally convinced, it works 100 % (unfortunately, it works the other way around as well) -> i predicted croatia’s victory over italy, and the losses against mexico and ecuador. same thing with switzerland, france and england at euro 2004. the argentina game was tipped for croatia, and it worked … i must not bet on it, or it won’t work — that’s the biggest drawback!

team that i want to win:
nigeria

team that will win:
croatia

team i really find ridiculous and appalling:
england

death group:
none — i hope everyone will survive

team that will go home early:
germany (is already at home)

top 5:
croatia
nigeria
brasil
japan
albania
