Viennot in Running to Become First Female World Cup Linesman

By: WC Bob | April 12th, 2006 | 19 Comments »

Nelly Viennot of France is one of 82 finalists vying to become part of a group of 60 linesmen (linespeople?) that will be raising their flags at the World Cup this summer. Viennot has been running up and down the sidelines in the French first division since 1996 and she has been a long-time assistant to Eric Poulat, who already has been chosen as a World Cup referee. She’s been involved in Champions League matches, the Olympics and the Women’s World Cup. In other words, she is infinitely more qualified than the guy from Benin and half the dudes who have already been selected as head referees. We’re not very familiar with her but we’re sure she will be just as bad at missing offside calls as anybody with a penis so we hope she gets the opportunity to take her place in the history books.

I hope not. We cannot allow women on the world cup soccer field. I understand that she is better than most of the other referees from unknown parts of the world, but once they allow the best women referees they will be forced to give way to the women of Bunga Bunga. It would be like adding insult to injury caused by bad calls.

Linesmen(linespeople?). FIFA’s politically correct term is ‘referee’s assistant’, but that’s a load of bollocks, stick with linesmen.

Instead of black linesman, we must say
African-American (or African affiliated) assistant to the first referee for the purpose of judging offenses commited outside the field, as well as insignificant offenses in the field.
OK get some topless women in there too. At least they can distract the crowd when the referee gives away the game.

Turn the corner flags into 8ft poles and let the lady linesmen do their thing.

Good for her — I hope she makes the cut.

Of course, Sepp Blatter will probably want her to wear a special uniform with short shorts and a skin-tight top…
