US Announcers Fall Short

By: WC Bob | March 2nd, 2006 | 4 Comments »

Our man Daryl over on the United States blog lays down a great post today about the state of soccer television broadcasting in the USA. For those who haven’t experienced a soccer broadcast in the US, it is something to behold. Two talking heads spend the entire 90 minutes talking about things largely unrelated to what is actually happening on the pitch, while occasionally using inventive phrases that you never knew existed to describe the action.

This isn’t a slam against soccer in the US, which as I saw in yesterday’s game against Poland continues to be on the rise. Nor is it a slam against soccer fans in the US, a bunch that deserves credit for existing in a country where their sport is largely overlooked and misunderstood. There are plenty of people with soccer knowledge in the United States. They just don’t reside in the ESPN broadcast booth.

Thank god we get the SkySports feeds of Coca-Cola Championship and Carling Cup games. The TWI broadcasts of EPL are pretty good too. The US announcers yesterday were just dreadful. We’ve actually got better soccer commentators hear but they aren’t as friendly to the general public so the big networks don’t use them. It’s really too bad.
