Ukraine Joins the World Cup Work-Free Movement

By: WC Bob | May 31st, 2006 | 4 Comments »

Following the Portuguese Parliament’s heroic lead yesterday, Ukraine’s Prime Minister has asked employers in his country to adjust the work schedule so that workers can watch the World Cup. “On June 14 at 4 p.m., we expect an epidemic of unexplained illness to appear in Ukraine,” Prime Minister Yury Yekhanurov said Wednesday. I imagine there might be quite a bit of people missing work on June 15 due to illness, *cough* vodka, if Ukraine in fact knocks off Spain.

World Cup Blog heartily salutes the Prime Minister for his bold and decisive leadership in this critically important matter. We don’t know where he stands on issues like world peace, poverty and global warming, but we don’t especially care today. He is a hero in our eyes.

We look forward to more countries heeding the call for a World Cup international holiday.

[...] Finally, it wasn’t a match but 42,000 people showed up to watch Germany stretch during practice. Great effort by the host nation fans, who, like many others , are skipping work because of World Cup fever. Wish I could have been there.
