U2 World Cup Commercials Rock
The ESPN television network isn’t especially renowned for its football coverage, but it does have a good record when it comes to commercials. The network recently launched a very cool campaign for the World Cup. Featuring the voices of the members of U2, there are four commercials that show how One Game Changes Everything. I especially like the Anthem commercial with Bono. I watched it a couple of times and it got me all fired up. Made me want to lace up the boots and play.
That would be “effort”, not “effor”.

Not too sure the soccer ended the way in Ivory Coast, but it is a nice sentiment. Great photos in that Bono one.

I like them, but I think they preach to the choir too much and don’t do enough to reach the non-believers.
The average American already knows that the World Cup is HUGE and people take it really, really, really seriously. It almost comes off too preachy, especially with Bono, who rubs some people the wrong way, right or wrong.
But I understand they’re making one that focuses on the US team, which might appeal more to the non-soccer fan more.

[...] Although not quite as inspiring a those U2 commercials nor as jaw-droppingly wow as Nike’s Joga Bonita ads (sorry Euler!), this latest piece of animation features statues being brought to life my scantily clad Trini women. [...]

What is the name of the U2 song in Bono’s commercial?

I really like these commercials too. U2 is a truly universal band and I feel that they really project the signifigance and magnitude of the world cup, especially to those who previously didn’t know about this event (like me, since int’l football isn’t so popular in the US).

Mexicans??? im a bulgarian that lives in the usa i think the comment that mostly mexicans watch the world cup is extremely ignorant there are so many immigrants from other countries including some from other latin american countries… i would say that about 35-40 % of american viewers are Mexicans but americans should go ahead and watch that nba final whoever plays because the rest of the world doesnt care.

^I agree Stefan. Lets hope immigrants don’t become the new ignorant ones.
I liked the one about the Ivory Coast. A cease fire between factions just for the WC? Priceless and lets hope it stays like that!

[...] There are reports today that former German defender Juergen Kohler has turned down the Ivory Coast coaching gig after initially agreeing to the position because his wife was concerned about the safety of living and working in a country that has seen its share of violence in recent years. All of this is old news, of course, since the World Cup ended the violence in Ivory Coast and cured cancer in the process. The Scotland one is patronising treacle. They’re all a little too “significant” for me, but I guess that ESPN knows that the people that tune in for the World Cup that don’t watch MLS or any other soccer do it because it’s an event, not just a game.
Still, I appreciate the effor that they’re going to promote it.
