The World Cup Magic Age Number

By: WC Bob | June 6th, 2006 | 14 Comments »

By now you probably have a pick for which team will lift the World Cup on July 9, but did you factor average team age into your selection? In the past ten World Cup tournaments, no team has won with a roster that averages more than 28 years in age. If this holds true again this year, it means that Brazil, Italy and the Czech Republic among others won’t be crowned champions.

The youngest team in the tournament is Ghana with an average age of 25.2 years. The oldest is Trinidad and Tobago at 29.5 years.

Teams that exceed the magic number of 28 are:

Brazil, France, Italy, Czech Republic, Sweden, Portugal, Serbia and Montenegro, USA, Australia, Croatia and Trinidad and Tobago.

Will this hold true again this tournament or does age really not matter? What do you think?

Now THAT’S an interesting statistic. Plays right into my thinking that Holland is going to do something special. Also bodes well for the hosts. Or is it Argentina’s turn?

Or is it time for this to no longer be a truth about winners?

Very interesting news item. Too bad they don’t actually list all the current team averages, just give a few highlights.

I think this misses the difference between the age of the starting 11 versus the bench. Brazil, for instance, have an experienced bench and don’t have a super youngster as they did in ‘98 (Denilson, Ronaldo) or ‘02 (Ronaldihino); Adriano and Kaka are already 24 and even Robinho is 22. It would be more interesting to look at the ages of the players who started for each side than at the whole squad.

Hmmmmmmm….just as I thought. Factor in that a European team are most likely to win, then we have to go for England v Holland with England as eventual winners. COME ON ENGERLAND!!!!!!

I’ve calculated the Average age of Croatia’s team and it does not exceed the 28 year age barrier as has been reported. There average age came in at 27 years and about 10 months. I’ve taken into consideration the years and months each player has been born to the start of the world cup. Since they didn’t publish the exact average age, don’t bother listening to there rubbish.

Cheers

Interesting. I ran the average age for the U.S. and it was barely over 28. I think taking Keller out of the mix (at ripe old age of 36 and 4 months younger than me), would get the average below 28. I like the U.S. chances better with him in the net comparitively.
