The Club Teams with the Most Players at the World Cup

By: WC Bob | May 16th, 2006 | 29 Comments »

I’m convinced that World Cup Blog readers are the greatest human beings in the history of human beings. Case in point, earlier today I asked if anyone would do a little research regarding the club teams that have the most players listed on the various World Cup rosters. Within a matter of minutes, the answer was delivered. Rodrigo Bueno Gabriel from Brazil was the first to list the top five teams.

The teams are:

Chelsea, England – 17
Arsenal, England – 13
Manchester United, England – 12
Milan, Italy – 12 or 13??
Barcelona, Spain – 11
Juventus, Italy 11

Blog reader ejesse also did some research and came up with the same teams but found 13 players for Milan. Since we like to reward the people who do the work for us around here, we’re going to give a free post on this very blog to both Rodrigo Bueno Gabriel and ejesse. They need to contact me bob [at] worldcupblog.org

I’ll probably do a similiar contest in the future so be prepared to show how smart you are, while you do my work for me.

Bayern Munich’s got 11 if you still count Michael Ballack. That 17 for Chelsea IS counting him.

Thanks, Bob. Should have guessed re: Dynamo and Saprissa–great clubs in smallish leagues. Sorta like LDU quito.

Mexico has has 6 players from Chivas de Guadalajara.

It’s not quite as much as Costa Rica in terms of sheer numbers of players from the same club team. However, when one considers the overall quality of Mexican club sides with the overall quality of Costa Rican clubs, then having six from the same club cetainly is quite a bit.

I probably should have mentioned in my previous post that Chivas, of course, only uses Mexican players. Therefore, any player from Chivas strong enough to make a World Cup squad would ipso facto be on the Mexican squad.

What about the team with a large portion of its players from the same club?

I know the answer to that!

Saudi Arabia!!

Al-Hilal club – 10 players!

[...] I was reading Bob’s article about the clubs that have the highest number of its players playing in the coming World Cup. But I realized that, Saudi Arabia is only country that has half of the team from two major saudi clubs – 9 players playing from Al-Hilal and 7 players from Al-Ittihad. [...]

[...] If Sheva does sign with Chelsea, that will mean the team will have 18 players represented in the World Cup, the most of any club. [...]

Hi – Have a look at this link, it sets out the representation from the top teams. The count I made on the 7th June appears wrong, but not sure if Sky are right.
Chelsea players : Cech, Carvalho, Gallas, Ferreria, Terry, Huth, Ballack, Makelele, Essien, Lampard, Cole, Robben, Shevchenko, Crespo, Drogba, Maniche …. Exclude Del Horno who was sent home injured.. = 16 (should really also exclude Huth and Maniche as they are moving on) . …
Think there are 4 Captains = Germany, Ivory Coast, Ghana and Ukraine, own club capitain Terry does not feature.
10 different countries involved… Del Horno would have made it 11.
The only members of the 1st team squad not selected were 3 i.e. Cudicini (Italy),Glen Johnson and Wright Phillips (England). 2 others countries not involved are Duff (Ireland) and Geremi (Cameroon). Youngsters Carlton Cole and Diarra not included.

Refer Roger Druse query ; See above – I think the only Cheslea player not to play for his country is Cudicini (Italy) … Carlton Cole and Diarra played for the under 21 ones. Diarra should get a full French cap in the medium term.

According to the official world cup website Arsenal top the list with 15 members of their squad on duty.
Chelsea are next best on 14, with AC Milan showing 13. Then come Manchester United and Juventus with 12, Bayern Munich (11) and Barcelona, Real Madrid and Lyon all with ten.

I can’t count 17 or even 15 chelsea players that are in the world cup I stop at 14!!

can the chelski fan who is claiming this figure list them all please! as the list above claims Manchie and he was only on loan and has gone back. and you can’t include Lampard because he didn’t show up to the world cup!!

Someone has been gracious enough to list the Mighty Gooners players!!

Or dear Rob,
I agree with you on the Chelski issue but pardon me on the Champions of England, say whatever you like, they are not gooners as you think. If you thinks Man U or Liverpool have ever dreamt of such strength of holding onto an unbeaten run of over 48 Matches you are thinking wrongly because even currently it’s Chels.. tha has shown some threat to break to this record and it has not come close enough.

Pardon me Rob,

GUNNERS and not Gooners, Arsenal set a UEFA Champions League record during the 2005-06 season by going ten matches without conceding a goal, beating the previous best of seven set by A.C. Milan. They went a record total stretch of 995 minutes without letting an opponent score; the streak finally ended in the final against Barcelona, when Samuel Eto’o scored Barcelona’s equaliser in the 76th minute.

Pardon me Rob,

Mighty GUNNERS not gooners
Did you know that Arsenal holds the records below?

Most goals in a season – 44, Ted Drake (1934-35)
Most League goals in a season – 42, Ted Drake, (1934-35)
Most goals in a single match – 7, Ted Drake (v. Aston Villa, First Division, 14 December 1935)
Most goals in a single match at Highbury – 5, Jack Lambert (v. Sheffield United, First Division, 24 December 1932)
Most goals in the League – 152, Thierry Henry (as of 4 February 2006)
Most goals in the FA Cup – 26, Cliff Bastin
Most goals in the League Cup – 29, Ian Wright
Most goals in European competition – 41, Thierry Henry (as of 5 April 2006)
Fastest recorded goal – 13 seconds, Alan Sunderland (v. Liverpool, FA Cup, 28 April 1980)
Youngest goalscorer – Cesc Fàbregas, 16 years 212 days (v. Wolverhampton Wanderers, League Cup, 2 December 2003)

Rob just pardon me!
Are you aware that ARSENAL has the;

Most League wins in a season – 29 in 42 matches, First Division, 1970-71.

Fewest League defeats in a season – 0 in 38 matches, Premier League, 2003-04.

Most League goals scored in a season – 127 in 42 matches,

Most points in a League season (2 for a win) – 66 in 42 matches, First Division, 1930-31.

Most points in a League season (3 for a win) – 90 in 38 matches, Premier League, 2003-04. ????????????

Just don’t talk negatively about this club because it has quite anumbers of achievements.

Do you think you can get all those young players, give them to Fergie, Mour, Or Bennie and they make them reach the finals of the Champions’ league.

PARDON ME, PARDON ME AND PARDON ME.

THIS IS ARSENAL THE ‘GUNNERS’!!!!!!

HA HA HA GO O2, GO EMIRATES, GO WENGER.
