The Bud isn’t for Saudis

While World Cup Blog remains firmly committed to our boycott of that paint thinner known as Budweiser during our stay in Germany, the players for Saudi Arabia are refusing to accept FIFA’s Man of the Match awards because it is sponsored by Anheuser-Busch, the company that makes the awful beer. “If any of our players play well enough to deserve a man of the match award, they will refuse to accept it. It’s simple,” said a spokesman for the Saudi Football Federation who goes on to explain that the decision has nothing to do with the beer’s quality, or lack thereof, but because of cultural and religious reasons.

Apparently the winner of the Man of the Match is given a silver mug with the Anheuser-Busch logo on it.

With Saudi Arabia playing Spain and Ukraine next, somehow I don’t think they’ll be turning down too many awards this World Cup. Their team did play well against Tunisia, however. After bashing the match for six months I can admit I was wrong. It was much more interesting than those England games and don’t even get me started about France – Switzerland….

Hahahaha I think for once I actually support them for that! Budweiser…worst beer ever. Fight the power! :D

I was just going to say–doesn’t look like that will be too much of an issue for Saudi.

Good for anyone and everyone that boycotts that swill (regardless of reason)!

FIFA needs to learn a lesson in granting sole-rights contracts like that so far in advance. Preference should be given to the host country, it’s the local flavor that makes each WC different and wonderful.

If it had to be an American beer, couldn’t it have been Sam Adams instead? Budweiser is piss water.
