Sven: “We Will Win the World Cup”

By: WC Bob | May 20th, 2006 | 40 Comments »

Proving that a lame duck status can turn even a boring person into a bold risk taker, England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has firmly predicted that his team will win the World Cup. “I think we will win it, of course,” he told the Telegraph. “But you know that you have huge opponents as well. We need no more injuries, a little bit of luck and good referees.” Sven is not alone in his optimism. With news that Wayne Rooney might be recovering from injury faster than anticipated, bookmakers report that there has been a surge of Brits betting on their team to win it all.

With the selection of Theo Walcott and now his fearless prediction, Sven is showing that he is not afraid to go out with a bang. I can’t really blame the guy. He’s going to get the blame no matter what, so he might as well have some fun in the process.

As for what he plans to do after the World Cup?

“I might try to win it again for another country,” he said.

Yes, it is always good to plan ahead.

im sorry, i had respect for this guy back when he coached Lazio to serie A champions, but ever since then he’s been on a downhill spiral of idiocy. whatever he says or does just doesnt make sense, i mean putting rooney on the team? common, rooney is some serious talent, AND hes young, its gonna suck not making it to the WC but wouldnt u rather that than jeapordize the rest of his young carrier?
thats my opinion, and now with the guarantee of the world cup, its good to be confident and its obviously every team WANTS to win, but they wont, there gonna choke or find another way to loss, not that i dnt like england, on the contrary i hold the premiership in high regards as the best of european soccer, but after Sven guarantees the world cup, he’s just blowing his own horn

Argentina subbing out Ayala, Riquelme, and Tevez would be like England subbing out Terry, Lampard and Rooney.

It is still the first team, but a very different first team.

I think all the talk of “winning the world cup” is bad. Its important to believe that you can win but focus on the game at hand. Looking past “lowly group” opponents is a great way to go home early.

I never understand the British press.

In every World Cup and Euro, they always create the hype that England is a serious contender to win the championship.

And then when England get kicked out in the second round or quarter final, they always say the team is not good enough, mediocre at best, etc.

The British press seems to change their mind all the time. We all know that England is not good enough to win the World Cup. I wonder why they enjoy creating all the hype.

Did everyone remember how much the British press hailed Sven as the messiah, super coach, etc, who would bring England to the top of the world? And now, the same press criticize him heavily .

Ups and downs are exciting, but you have to admit that England don’t really have ups and downs since 1990. You can tell that they’ll always bow out after the round of 16 or after quarter final. So predictable that they’re boring.

Agreed.

I could see England choking in the first round.

Stranger things have happened.

I do not think England will win even with the presence of Rooney. In fact, the 2006 team is not as strong as the team in 2002.In 2002 they unlucky to met Brazil in the second round and they lost. In my projection this time round, the furtherest they can go is the semifinals where they will meet Brazil where they will lose again. This team is only good for entertaining us every weekend but does not have the quality to lif the world cup.

ENGLAND WILL WIN! USA will lose thier group, Italy and Czech Republic will qualify. England will win their group. Then face Poland in Second Round - Win. Quarters: Argentina/Holland/Portugal (depending on their successes) - We can beat all of them. Semis: Brazil -we only lost 2-1 last time we played them. and that was when we had a s-h-i-t-e team. we will get to the final. And WE WILL WIN!
CANADA AND USA SUCK ASS!

Lets be honest England is a country that adores football to the point where players like George Best (woman beater and drunk) are idolised and mourned, they have an ok team but the media always kill them with pressure, which will never change.
England has a very good chance of qualifying but if they meet Brasil they will lose-no argument,England still remind everyone of 66 but they do it as if they have won it 5 times, uraguay have more to be proud of.
Good team with good players, but bottom line is England will always sadly be the nearly men and i dont think i will ever eat these words-sorry.

Weird reading all these replies. England have a VERY good chance of winning the trophy. Friendlies mean nothing, especially the one against Argentina. The one thing England has more than any other team, is the fact that every other team are scared of them, including Brazil. They are completely unpredictable, and come together in tournaments. Has anyone seen Theo Walcott play? Does anyone know if Rooney is actually going to play? Midfield is the strongest in the world right now, and everyone knows games are won thro’ the midfield. I wouldnt bet against them.

What’s all this “Everyone knows England can’t win the world-cup” rubbish? England do often under-perform when it matters, but we have plenty of world-class players. Gerrard, Lampard, Owen, Beckham, Terry, Rooney, some of the best in the world, we should be winning sometime soon.
The thing is, we are capable of beating anyone and losing to anyone.

By the looks of these posts, people just enjoy picking on us, call any win we get ‘lucky’, and use any loss we get as a way of trying to prove that we ‘can’t win the world cup’. We have a better chance than most of you, so there!

100% agree with Jim, for the first time in a long time we have a world class team capable of beating any side but the question is can they play together as a team with real hunger to win? Its something I fear has been missing for some time. Fingers crossed the raw talent comes through with or without Wayne R. Come on England !!!!

Sorry Richard. The US will advance to the semi’s. In another 8-12 years, we will own the Jules Rimet Trophy. It happens in three’s Ricky:
1. Revolutionary War
2. War of 1812
3. 2014 World Cup Champions

Go cry in your fish and chips and leave the sport to real athletes!

Jim, with or without Rooney, you should see the English win the Jules Rimet Trophy. I see you downing Brazil 2-1 to win it all. I see my ‘yanks” losing the third place game to Argentina by a 2-1 score.

“bookmakers report that there has been a surge of Brits betting on their team to win it all”

Really ?, and what team would that be then. Britain consists of England, Scotland and Wales. There is no British Team only the constituent nations that make up Britain and only one of these is the competition that would be England, and by no stretch of the imagination would the Scots or Welsh consider England to be their team. Poor writing, no grasp of geography.

To answer eddie’s question on wether scotland and Wales consider England to be their team would be certanly not. We are individual countries which make up Great Britian. Sometimes the Englsih press and companies in England seem to forget this and consider us part of “England”
