Some Love the World Cup, Some Do Not
World Cup fever has hit Bangladesh where students at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology have besieged the office of their vice-chancellor in an effort to have their exams postponed until after the World Cup. Alee Murtaza, the vice-chancellor of the university said: “We understand the students’ sentiments but we cannot put everything on hold for a month just for the World Cup.”
Here at World Cup Blog we are in full solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Bangladesh. Everyone else around the world is putting their lives on hold for a month and students should have that opportunity as well. Besides, you can learn a lot more watching Tunisia play Saudi Arabia then you can studying for a silly exam in aeronautical engineering. The world needs more football fans, not engineers.
Meanwhile, the story is the exact opposite in Holland where the Women for Football-free Netherlands have launched a campaign to get rid of the World Cup.
“We are really bored with it,” said one of the campaign’s leaders. “All our guys are glued to the TV, forgetting about us and everything else. They think that women don’t understand the game and are only good to serve beer and snacks.”
Here’s an idea. How about we send the Dutch women who oppose the World Cup to Bangladesh where they can take those exams while the students watch the matches. They won’t have to serve any beer or snacks and they can blissfully ignore the World Cup while the rest of the world can watch the tournament in peace.
