Some Love the World Cup, Some Do Not

World Cup fever has hit Bangladesh where students at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology have besieged the office of their vice-chancellor in an effort to have their exams postponed until after the World Cup. Alee Murtaza, the vice-chancellor of the university said: “We understand the students’ sentiments but we cannot put everything on hold for a month just for the World Cup.”

Here at World Cup Blog we are in full solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Bangladesh. Everyone else around the world is putting their lives on hold for a month and students should have that opportunity as well. Besides, you can learn a lot more watching Tunisia play Saudi Arabia then you can studying for a silly exam in aeronautical engineering. The world needs more football fans, not engineers.

Meanwhile, the story is the exact opposite in Holland where the Women for Football-free Netherlands have launched a campaign to get rid of the World Cup.

“We are really bored with it,” said one of the campaign’s leaders. “All our guys are glued to the TV, forgetting about us and everything else. They think that women don’t understand the game and are only good to serve beer and snacks.”

Here’s an idea. How about we send the Dutch women who oppose the World Cup to Bangladesh where they can take those exams while the students watch the matches. They won’t have to serve any beer or snacks and they can blissfully ignore the World Cup while the rest of the world can watch the tournament in peace.

Haha. Bangladesh is really crazy about the World Cup. From what i have seen and hearing from there..people have already placed the flag of the nation they supporting on top of each house. So there is sea of Brazillian and Argentinian flags everywhere. Hopefully they will be one Saudi flag somewhere..as that’s my team

Go make me Turkey Pot Pie!

Hehe really funny comments from you all and well written Bob. But I think those dutch ladies are too stupid to take those exams.
Lebanon is crazy too about the world cup and we each one has his own flag on the balcony. I have 320 by 240 cm dutch flag on my balcony but the favourites here are Italy Germany and Brazil. Also there are flags in everybody s car. Beirut is flooded with flags !!!
As for universities, most of them finished early this year just because of the world cup but they had to start very early seriously. As for my university, my last final will be on June 10 so I’ll be missing the opening ceremony. Hell no I wont miss it, I ll be finished from studying…
HUP HOLLAND WITH A BIG DUTCH FLAG FROM MY BALCONY!!!!!

haha in Iran all schools and universities closed out early on purpose because the admins knew no one would really study (And I think they admins and staff wanted to see the games themselves :D )

It should be mandatory that for the entire WC, all businesses should close except bars and pubs so we can enjoy the month. Yeah, and if the chicks or anyone else want to complain, they have to wait on us for the whole month.

Oh! My god! football is really wonderful. Why we don’t enjoy it this summer!

I don’t think the Dutch ‘widows’ are worried about the World Cup fervour. It’s more the weekly club games that unnerve them.

Let’s make the World Cup an official world holiday…
It should be done, it must be done…

those poor things how are they going to last the month without giving up on either football or exams. looks like poor grades all round this semester.
hmmmm if only thye could hypnotise the principle to become a die hard fan as well may be then they will get their wish.

  • In Brazil, world cup matches day are holidays. Not officially, but in reality that’s what happens, because nobody goes to schools, and most companies call the day off… unless they do some very important work, in that case they go to work but stop during the matches (or release employees early so they can go home to watch it).
