Scotland Adopts the Soca Warriors in the World Cup

It pays to share your last name with a country. At least it does if your name is Jason Scotland. The Trinidad and Tobago striker is appearing in a pretty clever commercial being shown in Scotland where he plays his club ball for St. Johnstone. The country Scotland’s connections to T&T run deeper than one player. There are six Soca Warriors who play professionally in Scotland, leading the Tartan Army, among others, to jump on the Trinidad and Tobago bandwagon. Too bad there aren’t any players named Wales. I hear they’re looking for a reason to watch the World Cup.

Great story! And I’m sure the fact that T&T is playing against England in Group B had nothing to do with Scotland’s adopting them. ;)

Ah, Wales loves us as well.
Dennis “Tallest” Lawrence plays for Wrexham FC in Wales.

Not sure how they’ll feel after we beat them in that friendly tomorrow though…

Most of the mainstream media is based in London and often focuses on news in England, with the British Parliament based there as well. Because of the history of oppression, many Scottish people seem to tease nowadays some Southerners with weird results of the devolution. First, I was quite happy to hear the news: “How nice that Scotland is always sympathetic and supportive to the Underdog”, I thought. “Maybe this Scottish politician just went through the list of participating countries and picked the smallest one with the least chance of winning. ” But hah, how naive of me! The reason of why the call was made, one of my fellow students explained, “is that actually most foreign players in Scottish teams are from Trinidad and Tobago than from any other country.” [...]

Yeah I think that the scots are true footballing gods and it is brill that they are supporting the exceptional Trinidad & Tobago. I’m from a little town called kilcock (thats right Kil’cock’) in Ireland and I hope that Trinidad go all the way. And They definitely will.
