Saudi Arabia Should Rent Samuel Eto’o
Some days it is easier to wake up, roll out of bed and get hard to work. Today was one of those days. Work included the always arduous task of watching great football. In this instance, we caught the Champions League semifinal between AC Milan and Barcelona. What a pleasure it was seeing great players like Ronaldinho, Andriy Shevchenko, Kaka, Rafael Marquez, and Gennaro Gattuso all on the same pitch. We have little doubt that these players are going to make this World Cup one for the ages.
Watching all these players who will be representing their respective countries this summer made us feel sad that one of our favorite guys to watch, Samuel Eto’o, won’t be in Germany. We love his passion for the game and the exciting pace he brings to a match.
With Cameroon failing to qualify for the World Cup, Eto’o will be spending his summer on loan to the Saudi club team Al Ittihad.
We have a better idea. Instead of him being loaned to a club competing in the Asian Champions League, how about loaning him to a country competing in the World Cup?
We wouldn’t want Eto’o to go to a team that is a serious contender. That would be unfair. But what about letting him play for Saudi Arabia? Their not going to win with or without him, but they sure would be a lot more fun to watch with Eto’o on the team.
We wouldn’t want this rent-a-player concept to be too prevalent – that’s what naturalization is for. But every four years there’s always a couple of players who we wish would be part of the World Cup fun. This would be one way of having all the best players playing in the best event in the history of events.
Back to work we go. There must be another game on somewhere…
