Rooney vs. Messi

Messi lost to a bunch of UCLA guys in th U-20 World Cup last summer. If Messi is comparable to Rooney then so is Benny Feilhaber, and Freddie Adu. Spare me the Rooney comparisons until Messi is brilliant for the full Argentinian squad (as Rooney has been for England), and I’ll spare you comparisons between Feilhaber and Kaka.

Don’t get me wrong, Rooney is an impressive strike (why, he killed us – Switzerland – at the EC in Portugal almost on his own). However, comparing Rooney with Messi is silly. Ronney is a typical goalgetter, somebody who makes the goals when he gets the chance. Messi’s skills and creativity are just simply stunning and leave Rooney wanting – big. In a few years, if no serious injury gets in his way, Messi will be sung as Ronaldhino is now. Not only as a important part of his team (Barca or Argentina), but also spectacular and entertaining. Something only a few have/had, which will put him into the league of Maradona, Ronaldhino, Zidane (at his best). Rooney will ‘just’ be remembered as somebody who scored a lot of goals – which is quite an achievement on its own.

Wayne Rooney is the better player between the two at this point in time. He is a stud for both club and country. Messi is a great player who hasn’t put either Barca and Aregentina on his back yet and his reputation has taken a hit ever since that night at Stamford Bridge. I agree with Adrian that Rooney is a great goal scorer and very strong and fast. He will have a great career but the player that will most be remembered of this generation is Messi. Messi creates and is already the second best player on a team that is still in the champions league. Rooney would not even start on Barcelona. As time goes on Messi will get better and better and as they both age rooney will slow down a hair and that will be it for him because his game is totally about brute speed and power but Messi will still be dominant even when slows down because of the touch he has on the ball. Just ask Chelsea who they think is better. The had no answer for Messi and resorted to a cheap shot. They will both have great careers but at the end of the day it will be Messi that grabs everyones imagination.

i think that both players are brillaint but at the end of the day i think rooney is a better player becuase he is an al round player who can play in 2-3 different position he creates goals and score unbelievable goals messi will be a gr8 player but will follow in the footsteps of european footballers which is take dives and hack off the other teams in the world. there is no qeustion messi is a gr8 player but in my opinion rooney is better because he is all round and he will not stop as he gets older,becuase he is only 19 and he will progress into a far better player than messi for a big lad rooney gets bout the place and that is 1 key factor that will let messi down his size in my final words once yr an argy always and argy and from a english veiw rooney forever

shaker, I’m afraid all you reveal is your ignorance. The USA beat Argentina 1-0 and Messi did not appear until the second half in the game you are referring to. Perhaps you need reminding that Messi was the top scorer in the under 20 world championship and also voted best player, oh yes and Argentina won the trophy as well. Messi has become a regular in a star studded Barca side, at the age of 18, as well as a regular in the Argentina side, he is still 2 and 1/2 years younger than Messi and in my opinion already a better player who will only get better and better.

Rooney is the better player at this point in time and has the advantage of having already proved himself on a world stage in Euro 2004. He has the advantage of being very strong on the ball, and doesn’t roll around in fake agony when he has been tackled.

I’m pretty sure both Rooney and Messi are very good and will become even better as they get old. I just don’t see the fuss… Rooney is good because he’s young and he scores a lot of goals? So do a lot of players… So did Owen and now the sole star is Rooney. Anyway, the ones who become “kings” or “legends” are quite far from beying simply goal scorers. I’m not even talking in the Pele, Maradona, Eusebio and Cruiyf league… I can stick with Zidane, Ronaldo or Figo. Now, who’s closer? Honestly! Rooney or Messi? I’m not even Argentinian but this seems obvious to me.

Very interesting comments here. But as many have said, they are both great players. Rooney impresses me alot because not only does he score alot but this guy plays everywhere in the field. I saw him play last year and became a huge fan of him and thought he would be the next big thing, until is saw little messi. I dont think there is anyone that could come to this guy at his age. what he is able to do in games are just insane. Now going back to the topic start, Rooney is a MUCH Better player now, how can people say rooney is not creative? You are either blind or dont watch enough games. He will create so many opportunities for his team mates in a game, did anyone see him against arsenal just a week ago? My god he was legendary, scored a goal, had 2-3 amazing shots, split arsenals defense on several occasions and set up the 2nd goal by breaking through the defense and setting up Park with an absolute sitter. Messi is good, but he’s got a lot to learn still – he still hasnt done it on the big stage, he’s still a nobody. Rooney performs on the big stage and in the big games – fact! Messi has GOOD talent and a GOOD future – but rooney is miles ahead at the moment!

Alex, i was strictly talking about this year, for messi started playing for barca this year as a regular. I never said rooney is bad or any lesser than messi. I really do like Rooney i think he is the heart and soul of the england squad. He could be the best player in the EPL even, but what i am saying is, if you were to look at the year they are having this year, and campare them head to head, messi produces a bit more than rooney. i mean when messi touches the ball, you know something is about to happen, you dont really feel that about rooney, but he will creat something good usually. I mean, thats why messi wont the golden boy award by a huge margin.

Currently I think Rooney is a better player, although Messi has quite a bit to learn …remember he is only 18 but a player to keep your eye on. I think in the future they both will be on a similar level. Rooney is as much as a team player as Messi.

Just look a little deeper and the potential of the two players, one can clearly see that Messi is a very superior talented and skillful creative baller who can control the destiny of a game. Messi is a better all around and more talented player than Rooney “the pure classic striker who has a killing instinct for scoaring the goal”. Messis game resembles that of Maradona, Ronneys s more like that of Owen.

first Rooney is not from england he is from Ireland so yeah he is a punk who just chases after the big bank if he was a real man(Robbie or Roy Keane for instance) he would have stayed and played for Ireland and they would be amazing with Rooney and Robbie as strikers and forwards but no roy cause he retired.

Second he is a great striker cause thats what he does he scores goals which is great and all but thats all he can do.

Messi on the other hand can control the field with his speed and his amazing ball control and on top of that his natural left footed shots make it almost impossible to stop.
