Ronaldo’s 15 World Cup Goals

By: WC Bob | June 29th, 2006 | 28 Comments »

At the start of the World Cup we were among the masses that were questioned Ronaldo’s, well, massiveness. For the first couple of Brazil games it looked like there was no way he would score a goal, let alone break the all-time World Cup scoring record. But with three goals in the past two games, that is exactly what he did. The video below shows all 15 of his World Cup goals. The thing that strikes me is how many of them were from close range. While there are a few beauties, the majority simply come from being in the right position to score – a true sign of a striker.

I admire any players who has scored as many goals as Ronaldo. So he is a bit overweight, it doesn’t seem to stop him. Good luck to him. Overweight or not, players like him is what we all want to see, ie., players who score goals so your team can win. Many losing teams would give a gold mine to have someone like Ronaldo in their team, knowing there is almost a guarantee of a goal in each match they play.

There will always be haters no matter what the outcome or performance of brazil and its players. It seems like the current hype is to hate Brazil’s team — it’s so big of a target and so good overall that ANY thing they do (or don’t) is reason enough to flame away.. and that includes Ronaldo.

It’s one thing to criticize (I’m a big critic of Brazil’s performance myself) but it’s another to just burn a team with a bunch of biased/uninformed crap like I’ve seen some people doing on comments around here (specially from supporters for the teams that LOST to brazil.. funny indeed).

I still think Ronaldo need someone up there (like Robinho) to make passes so he can do his thing. But there’s no denying that the guy’s a powerhouse and already part of World Cup history.

The Pillsbury Doughboy scored 15 goals in 18 games and 3 world cups (he didn’t get to play in 1994). Gerd Mueller scored 14 goals in 14 games in 2 world cups. The French dude scored 13 goals in one world cup. Is Ronaldo the best ever? I don’t think so but hats off to the new world cup goal scorer.

Claude: it depends on what you want to consider “the best”. Being at a high peak for a short time, or being good for a long time? Plus the differences in both football technology (ie, nowadays = better fitness development, but also teams of better quality overall so you won’t have trashings of 8-0 at World Cups anymore), it’s quite difficult to tell who’s the “best”. It’s like trying to compare Pelé with Maradona or Ronaldinho.

Ronaldo may want to be very careful as he may set a bad example for aspiring players – you don’t want to see soccer turning into baseball with all fatty boombas walking around on the field ;)

Zé is right. Long ago many results were high. In 1950 Brazil won over Spain 6:1 and Sweden 7:1, for an example. In 1974 Poland beat Haity 7:0 and Yugoslavia beat Zaire 9:0.

Gerd himself said that it is amazing that Ronaldo keeps performing so well over so many years.

Even Rooney has good things to say about our striker:
“He has been one of the best players over the last 10 years.”

More of Rooney’s opinion:

“He and Ronaldo have had some criticism at the World Cup, which is embarrassing because they are both world-class players. They are unbelievable.”

That is the best example a man of sport can give. Never give up. He was discarted from football after that knee injury, stayed out of the pitch for 2 years and came back in 2002 to be the top scorer of the competition. Now he is showing the world that even if you are not fully fit you can make a difference. Heart, my friend, heart.

And you think you’re funny, pawnapwnapwb. You’re just showing your ignorance.

I credit Ronaldo’s fairly unique ability to juke defensive players with his ball handling and his ability to create space for shots in tight confines by using his upper body well. Usually strikers can do one or the other, but doing both extremely well is what sets him apart. How many times has the guy scored with 2 or 3 defenders draped over him? He’s a striker with fullback’s body. Scary.

Why do people keep talking about Ronaldo’s weight. It’s a non-issue and it is disrespectful to keep bringing it up (no pun intended). Ronaldo may be the all-time leading scorer but he has been blessed with a great team, and they deserve as much credit for providing him with the service as he does for scoring. But in no way is Ronaldo as good as World Cup legends like Pele or Maradonna, or even lesser scorers like Paolo Rossi who may have been in the top scorers in World Cup history himself if his career was not cut short. Ronaldo has yet to score a stand out goal like Maradonna’s goal against West Germany in the 1986 final where he pretty much dribbled through the whole German team. As was stated above, most of Ronaldo’s goals have come from close range. While one can that this is the sign of a good striker to be in te irght place at the right time, it can also be said that this is a sign of great team support to be able to find their strikers.

Actually, Ronaldo scores from well outside the box quite often. He finds the upper and lower corners as well as anybody in the game. Go look and you’ll find plenty of examples of Ronaldo powering through defender after defender in the open field, then beating the goalie. This year, what has been most impressive is his ability to fight off 2 and 3 defenders on him in the middle of the box. His ability to keep the ball moving while using his upper body to fend off challenges so he can find the best angle of attack is uncanny. One of the best ever, for sure.

Observer is observing only World Cup goals. In Inter and Real Madrid he did everything you mentioned. The difference is that he is in his fourth World Cup, playing solid 3 of them.

Although he does get good service for most of his goals, he is still an incredible player. People just like to hate the good team like Brasil and Ronaldo. My friend says he doesn’t like Brasil because they don’t stop winning, like those damn Yankees. In his career at Barcelona during the late 90’s, he would constantly school up many defenders at one time and still score. Anyways, 3 world cup goals, not bad for a fat guy, eh?
But I believe that Just Fontaine was the greatest World Cup scored. 13 goals in 7 matches, that is one world cup, in ‘58. His career was unfortunatly cut short at the age of 26 when he broke his leg…26!! Imagine what he would have done.

i think the best strikers are definately yet to come. so many times players show flashes of brilliance, but i don’t think there are any strikers playing now who deliver to their potential.
