Rocky CAN Start for African Qualifiers
A lot of people have wondered how Togo and Angola were able to beat out more established African teams to qualify for the World Cup. After the performance of both teams in their opening matches of the African Nations Cup Saturday, there are probably more skeptics than believers.
Angola was outplayed by a Cameroon side that clearly has its sights set on erasing the disappointment of failing to qualify for Germany by making some noise in Egypt. The Black Antelopes had no answer for Samuel Eto’o as the Bareclona scored three goals in leading the Lions to a 3-1 victory.
For Angola fans – and really, who doesn’t love the Palancas Negras? – the loss is a disappointment but the form displayed by the team is even more discouraging. The midfield was completely dominated by Cameroon and the defense appeared confused and futile in trying to contain Eto’o. If there is one consolation, it is that Angola has probably just faced the toughest team in Group B. The bad news it that the road ahead is still difficult with games against Togo and Congo.
Togo started its tournament without striker Emmanuel Adebayor who was out with an upset stomach and who only came on to play a final 30 minutes of uninspired football. Even without their Arsenal striker on the field, the Hawks did have some excellent scoring opportunities but failed to convert their chances. Lomana LuaLua set up a goal and scored one himself in leading Congo to a 2-0 victory.
Togo fans (and Arsenal fans too) should be concerned with Adebayor whose talent is only matched by his inconsistency in wanting to play. He was driven out of Monaco for missing numerous trainings and now when his country needs him the most he begs out of action with an upset tummy. I say put a band aid on it, strap on the cleats and respresent your country with pride. [UPDATE: Looks like Adebayor is out because of a dispute with the coach.]
The one bright spot today was Cote d’Ivoire’s 1-0 victory over Morocco, but even that was tainted by a questionable call in the box (really, it looked outside the box) that gave Didier Drogba the opportunity to knock in a penalty kick.
On Sunday we get our first look at Tunisia as it takes on Zambia side it should dominate. The next day Ghana gets into action when it battles Nigeria in what should be a very physical and entertaining match.
