It figures that they would reduce the penalties. Italy may be the land of da Vinci but it’s also the home to the Mafia. Some money was passed under the table and this is the end result. The players were not corrupt (apparently) but they benefited from what the people in power did. Champions League or UEFA Cup money etc.

Reducing penalties after an appeal is part of any legal process in many many countries.

Why this is normal in any country but if it happens in Italy then some people say this is the result of a corrupted action?

Is there some evidence to think this or it is just that the wind is blowing in that direction?

Darren, if a similar scandal had happened in England, and because of it Chelsea would be stripped of its 2 last championships, retroceded in the lower league where it would be penalized 17 points, and be subjected to huge financial losses and tremendous loss of prestige, would you consider that penalty too light? And a sign of corruption?

Mate, the English invented football and have won just one measly world cup. And that one was undeserved because of a referee mistake. The corrupt English probably paid off the referee in that case.

Stay cool Darren, or the bile will choke you.
By the way, say hello to Beckham, Gerrard, Rooney, Lampard and company. Hope they didn’t get lost at the airport when they left Germany.

Darren get over it mate,

How the Italians deal with the situation is their problem, if they feel fit to reduce the fines etc that is their problem as long as it doesn’t affect the rest of the world soccer what does it matter they have to live with it.

Second point! Yes remember England invented football our only downfall is letting in second rate managers who pertain to know something about football manage the England team. Perhaps we will learn from the gross mistake we have made. England have many many fine ’superstar’ status players but if they are guided by uninformed, illogial managers what can we expect, bring on 2010.

“Juventus: points penalty reduced from -30 to -17″. Decisions like these always baffle me and confirm the joke that a lawyer is one who pisses over your and then tells you it’s raining. What bloody formula was used to arrive at -17. How did they get from -30 to -17. Why not -16, or -15. Did they use the formula that converts fahrenheit to centigrade, or vice versa. Maybe someone liked the odd number of 17. Probably was the number of the judge’s house, or the number of infidelities.

Having just read three long investigative pieces on the Italian scandal in 3 separate magazines, I now have a better grasp of just what this scandal is all about. It’s pretty disgusting. Each article pointed out the many other scandals in certain other European countries (none in France, tho) but all said that no other scandal is like Italy’s. This is a longstanding institutional situation in Italian football, it’s utterly endemic. I also learned that both Buffon and Cannavaro were under suspicion for their betting habits (and consistently lucky betting results). And I learned that players like Ibrahimovic are total stooges of Italian football “lord” Luciano Moggi.

I had thought that maybe with the first decision at least a little justice would really be done but I didn’t understand that the corruption in Italian football runs very very deep and has very powerful connections. The guy who runs most of the country’s football, Moggi, has very powerful friends. I’m afraid this recent prosecution and court decisions comprise just a negligible dent in a much larger, systemic problem. It’s not going away any time soon. I for one have lost all belief in any Italian club.

if any club be it mine(chelsea)or anybody else commits a crime and that is exactly what it is,a crime then they should be hit very very hard.it’s bad enough having cheats like ronaldo rolling all over the place without having chairman director’s and the like doing it in the boardroom.the judge was paid off or threatened with a horeses head in his bed simole as that.and i agree with bruce, how do you get -17 from -30.it’s laughable.

I know that you are rather dense ( your prose is not exactly the Queen’s English), but make an effort and try to answer these questions:
-If corruption is so pervasive in Italy, why they bugged Moggi’s and others’ phones for years, and then they started
prosecuting just before the World Cup, when it was demoralizing to Clubs, athletes and public?
- Wouldn’t have been easy to pay off the judges at the beginning, before anything came to light?
-The penalty to Juventus was reduced from -30 to -17 because every team in Serie B must have an equal chance to be promoted,
and with 30 points it would have been mathematically impossible. Even with -17 it will be practically impossible.
Juventus has started dismantling already, having lost Capello an Cannavaro.

Jane, it’s true that England has very good players, and it’s amazing that they can’t do well internationally.
This time they should have got ridden of Sven, who is just a dead fish, no flair, no enthusiasm.
And Beckham is nothing but deadwood. Doesn’t dribble, doesn’t tackle, and he is captain to boot. Just put there someone who is a leader both on the pitch and in personal realtionships.
That said:
FORZA USA! FORZA ITALIA!

Dominick, Yes I agree the England team does not gel when together, I hate Sven and to think he is looking to get back into Aston Villa geez the guy needs to go fishing permanently!

People like Beckham have really had their day, bit like Ryan Giggs, they peak for a season or three then struggle to maintain their standard. Beckham is a bit of a goodie two shoes, me I would much prefer to see Gerrard or Terry there as captain but then we all knew Beckham was Svens blue eyed boy, no Sven no Beckham. There is always far too much hype re the England squad, the press should just keep quiet and let them get out there and do the job but Svens style of playing, that he expected the squad to play, was just a joke but what can you do he was the manager, we just have to lick our wounds gracefully and hope 2010 comes quickly but mustn,t forget Euro.
