Raise Your Hand if you Like Jurgen Klinsmann

By: WC Bob | March 4th, 2006 | 4 Comments »

Somebody out there other than his wife and children must like Germany coach Jurgen Klinsmann, right? The hero of the 1990 World Cup wouldn’t be elected dog catcher these days in his native country. Following his team’s pathetic 4-1 loss to Italy this week, the Germany newspapers have been less than kind to Herr Klinsmann. Now, German politicians are joining the anti-Jurgen movement.

“It would be nice if Mr Klinsmann could explain his ideas and how he wants us to be world champions,” said Norber Barthle, a member of the governing CDU party. “The game against Italy was awful and you are left asking how he can make up ground by the summer. The Federal Government is the biggest sponsor of the World Cup and I would just like a few answers.”

How fortunate it must be to live in a country where your football team’s fate is the most important issue of the day for politicians. Forget about unemployment, terrorism, global warming; the country needs to focus all of its political, economic and military resources on making sure its team wins.

We didn’t think it would be possible, but suddenly we are beginning to feel a bit of sympathy for Klinsmann.

why doesn’t the sports committed for the Bundes Regierung just run the national team? how asinine are these german politicians? do they really think their input is going to help? is klinsmann going to have to play a certain formation under the threat of criminal prosecution?

The media and politics are trying to get attention by criticising Klinsmann. Don’t listen to them. The fans adore Klinsmann!

I like Juergen, apparently he even has gotten involved in charity with Agapedia ( http://www.klinsmann.de/ ); but he’s widely known to have been a diver too; I double check the game they played in ‘90; against the Czechs; looks like a dive to me that the German’s get their only and winning goal on from a penalty kick. I think there is a good chance, Germany will not do that great; and it’s just catching back up with Klinsi.

[...] The Klinsmann to the US rumors are a natural one considering the German spends his time living in California. Funny how his fortunes have changed considering before this World Cup began there were some in Germany who were calling for him to be sacked. [...]
