Quadruple Whammy for Socceroos

By: WC Bob | April 23rd, 2006 | 3 Comments »

If you think you had a tough weekend we can tell you it ain’t nothing compared to what hit Australia the past couple of days. Four of its key players were all forced to the sidelines with injuries. Perhaps the most serious is a possible fractured cheekbone suffered by number one keeper Mark Schwarzer during Middlesbrough’s FA Cup semi-final. Striker Mark Viduka sat out that contest with a thigh injury. In the other FA Cup semi-final, Liverpool’s Harry Kewell limped off with a groin injury. The mere words, groin injury, always makes us flinch as does the mere sight of seeing Kewell’s hair. Get that man to a barber, pronto.

Finally, midfielder Tim Cahill sustained a knee injury while playing for Everton.

Australia is not alone when it comes to injury worries. Italy’s keeper Gianluigi Buffon is not feeling so good these days, while Brazil’s players are all suffering from a Champions League virus of sorts. In Mexico, defender Joel Huiqui is on the mend.

The news isn’t so good in the Blogosphere either. I’ve got a nasty splinter in my index finger and it hurts like hell to type. I think I’ll recover in time for Germany, but just in case we’ve got some trained monkeys standing by to take my place.

Hey Bob, don’t let those monkeys touch the keyboard… Maybe they’ll do a better job than us… ;-)

I had a hangnail a few weeks ago, which of course accounts for my deficient number of blogs for that week.

[...] After the minor heart attack Australian football (i.e. soccer) fans suffered last weeks we’re all very happy to hear the latest reports about our walking wounded… they’re not as wounded as we were led to believe. [...]
