Poland 2 Saudi Arabia 1

By: WC Bob | March 28th, 2006 | 6 Comments »

The final whistle has blown in Jeddah and it was the visiting team from Poland that walks away with a 2-1 win. Łukasz Sosin, a 28-year-old forward making just his second appearance for Poland, scored both goals, including what proved to be the game winner in the 63rd minute. Sosin, pictured left, has been the top goal scorer in Cyprus the past two seasons and is starting to make his case for a spot on Poland’s World Cup roster. Defender Reda Tukar got the lone goal for a Saudi Arabia team that has not had many good results under coach Marcos Paqueta who took over control of the team in January. I’m starting to think that my prediction that Saudi Arabia will finish last in the World Cup might come true.

Indeed a loss that doesn’t help the team’s perception for the coming months.

I think the team need to work in how to convert opportunities intro goals.

After only two minutes of the game, Yasser Al Khahtani was almost close to scoring after getting a golden pass from Nawaf Al Temyat.

In the last few minutes of the game, Sami Jaber gave away an opportunity.

In addition to the above, they need to work on removing Muhammad Massad. The first goal is a result of his poor coverage on his side.

The team needs to work on stopping opponent from getting goals from headers.

saudi arabia did not do too bad against a credible team…they are expected to go with germany to the top 16…i think they’re going to be one of the unexpected teams this year

I sure would love to see them in the last 16 and beyond. The fact of the matter is that they still have to do a lot of work. Mid field looks fine and creative but the front needs to be much much more stronger. They lost because of stupid mistakes. Defence, for god sake, needs to be perfect. Daeya by himself can not save the team. It’s very very clear, if the ball is played high around the goal Saudi defence doesn’t know what to do, they simply give up. For some reason I don’t see the same winning attitude I saw during the qualifying. Seeing the qualification, I really thought this team would make an awesome mark in the worldcup. South Koreans looked like some college team playing against a highly professional Saudi team in qualification. If the coach brings the same attitude in the players we would be in Semi final and the folks writing all the BS about the team becoming the last can their own prediction.
