Players We Miss from Past World Cups
Over on the Portugal blog, Luis Paolo has crafted an interesting post about some of the past great players he wishes were still around to play at this year’s World Cup. I agree with the guys on his list and would throw in one of my all-time favorite World Cup players, Gheorghe Hagi from Romania. I also can’t seem to shake my inexplicable love affair with Hristo Stoichkov even though he is one of the dirtiest players I have ever seen. I guess there must be something about the great players from the ‘94 tournament that still sticks in my mind even though on a whole it wasn’t the greatest World Cup ever. Who are some of the players from the past you would want to see again this year?

Your comment about the 94 WC is intersting. I love the World Cup in Italy. Van Basten, Gullit, Mathaus, Klismann, Milla, Maradona, Caniggia, Gascoigne, Baggio and so many others… they were all there. They are my favorite players ever. However, this WC is considered so laim that FIFA changed to 3 point per victory after it. They though the game was getting too boring. It’s the lowest goal ratio in all WC ever. I just don’t see why, but I’m still loving it.

I’d love to see one of my all-time favourite players again, Icke Häßler…

I would love to see Gary Lineaker play again, that guy was clinical. He had great World Cuos in Mexico 86 and Italia 90. I would also love to see Gianfranco Zola play, he was a fantastic player.

hi, I really want to see Ronaldo play again for Brazil in the upcoming World Cup. He is a great soccer player. I would also love to see Zidane! He also a fantastic soccer player. I think this year that USA will beat Italy in the first round and also maybe even get in the Semifinals. USA has been playing good lately.

Romario!

[...] As one of the world’s biggest know-it-alls, even I have to admit that there are some things I won’t ever be able to explain. Try as I might, I can’t give a lucid explanation of how to build a nuclear bomb. I also can’t understand why I still have dreams about Hristo Stoichkov. It’s not like I think the guy is hot or that I have even seen him play in the past five years. I’ll never figure out why so many people like the Croatia tablecloth kits. But perhaps the biggest mystery of all is why people in England care so much about their team’s official World Cup theme song. [...]
