Picking a Premiership Team

By: Daryl | July 25th, 2006 | 9 Comments »

American sports columnist Bill Simmons enjoyed the World Cup enough to give domestic footy a try. He’s committed to following an English Premier League team for at least one season. But how does someone with very little “soccer” knowledge decide who to support?

Simmons found out which tv channel he needed, did some on-line research and read e-mails from his readers. Based on what he found out, he decided Tottenham Hotspur were the team for him. Read the complete article here.

He’s got to be given credit for at least thinking the thing through; he didn’t stop at “Who’s got the coolest jerseys?”

Coming into international soccer at a relatively old age (I was in my mid-20s before I had decided I liked the sport enough to follow it), I faced the same decisions.

Although I do nearly as much research (no internet at the time), I did put some thought into it. Without some foundational reason for supporting a team, one cannot really be a fan, which is short for fanatic.

FWIW, I support Celtic, Everton, and Arsenal. And I will always support an EPL team over teams from any other league.

I’ve been a Spurs fan since I was old enough to watch soccer – but the man is mad.:)

Thanks for posting this. An excellent piece by probably America’s best sportswriter. As for me, i follow mostly national teams and Ăšjpest here in Hungary, but The Sports Guy makes me want to go with Spurs.

Or Chelsea.

Sports Guy has got to be up there as one of the best sports writer’s in the states. Anyone else this story would have been absolute garbage, but he managed to put the time in, do some proper research, and still keep the entire thing entertaining. Very clever.
