Pele is Baby Talk in Portuguese

By: WC Bob | January 2nd, 2006 | No Comments »

The name Pele is one of the most well known in the world. It turns out that the man who it belongs to was not so happy when one of his classmates gave him the nickname at a young age.

“I didn’t want that name. In Portuguese, Pele sounds like baby talk,” Pele said. “Edson, in contrast, sounds like Edison, the inventor of the light bulb. But a schoolmate wanted to make me angry by calling me ‘Pele.’ First I glared at him, then I hit him.”

At Blog Central we are quite fond of the name Pele but we happen to prefer baby talk as is evident in most of our posts. We are also glad that Mr. Arantes do Nascimento decided on a career where he would use his feet and not his fists.

We found this comment from Edson, err? Pele, to be interesting as well:

“The favorites have often failed to live up to this responsibility. Whether it’s Brazil, Spain or England, there appears to be a curse. We have to watch out — especially when it comes to host Germany,” he said. “What stands out is the Germans turn it on at tournaments. They always show strength then.”
