Online Streams for Today’s World Cup Friendlies

By: WC Bob | May 30th, 2006 | 23 Comments »

If you are stuck at your computer or forgot to pay the cable bill this month, you can catch a number of today’s friendlies online thanks to the kindness and generosity of the pirates in China (as noted in the comments use Internet Explorer to get it to work). If you plan it right, you can see the following teams in action: Czech Republic, Costa Rica, Brazil, Germany, Japan and England. While the best game of the day, Angola vs. Argentina, isn’t listed on that site, there is a link to an online stream on our Argentina blog. There is no excuse not to spend your day watching footie now. Enjoy the games, while you learn some Chinese in the process.

I must say, since I have become interested in watching the World Cup games on my computer at work, (shhh), I have come across a good number of streaming programs. Many of them work great and now I can watch! WOOT! Check out http://www.footballstreaming.info for more of the programs, you have to sign up but it is a free forum and has excellent info.

Hmmm…might be hitting a port access problem with our firewall…good thing I’m the network/systems admin (of course I’ll have to notify myself of the violation of company policy).

Mac users and others - Make sure you are using Internet Explorer. That seems to help from time to time. Plus you need to download the software from the site to get the streams to appear.

The football one? Yah, I like it:) I was actually stupid enough to pay some dumbarse website $6 because it preported to link me to live streams. Needless to say it was bogus and Paypal dissed me. Oh, live an learn. This site has great links and the software it recommends seems to be spyware free. I use TVAnts, PPLive, TVKoo, and TVU player with success. Happy footballing!

Unfortunately, it doesn’t work on my Linux box either. :( I’ll have to content myself with the ticker feeds from kicker and livegoals.net.

I believe this is thanks to the kindness and generosity of pirates in Israel, not China (see how the website ends with .il). There’s a story behind it: A private cable company in Israel purchased the broadcast rights to the world cup games. There was a big outcry from the general public, and a very wide boycott soon followed (only 1,500 people out of millions of Israeli football fans have paid the fee to get the games on cable). They are demanding that the world cup be shown the way it’s meant to be… free for all.

Mac OS X users who are having trouble with other solutions use Peercast - I found this too late after trying TVU Player and PPlive without luck using Virtual PC

World Cup fans, if you live in the U.S., get TVU player. It has ESPN, ESPN2, and ABC. The matches are nearly broadcast live (about 1 minute delay) and if you have a decent connection, it should work fine.
Otherwise, download the TVAnts player, and choose the CCTV5 (Chinese sports) and you should get a fairly good quality of the world cup matches.
I’m sorry to say that I don’t know any solutions for Linux or Mac users. I don’t want to recommend you to do things when I’m not 100% sure about the information I provide you.
I will try to search for possible solutions, but in the meantime go to various streaming sites and look up the FAQ section.

Unfortunately, peercast hasn’t been working for me- i’m a mac user btw. No problem with the program, but there are no world cup audio or video feeds in their ‘yellow pages”

will keep trying!
