Not Everyone Loves the World Cup

By: WC Bob | June 4th, 2006 | 16 Comments »

You can tell we are getting dangerously close to the start of the World Cup now that groups are coming out of the woodwork to tell everyone how horrible the world’s greatest sporting event is for humanity. In South Korea, a collection of civic groups are lamenting the fact that World Cup fever has gripped their nation.

They have plans to post stickers in public spaces that say, “Doesn’t South Korea have better things to do than cheer for World Cup?”

The answer is, of course, no. Silly question.

Elsewhere, a group calling itself Women for a Football-free England has launched a website telling the world how much they despise the greatest event in the history of events. If the site looks a bit familiar too you, it is because they basically ripped it off from a group of Dutch women who are equally bent on ruining your World Cup fun.

Most disturbing is the poll which thus far shows that 37% of the men visiting the site agree that the World Cup should be stopped. Who are these guys?

Even here in Berlin, there is a small group trying to promote a football-free zone. Good luck with that one. I’m planning on stopping by their little area to sing songs in praise of Angola drunk off my ass at 4am.

In Belgium, a television channel promises some enticing alternative programming from June 9 – July 9. What is it with vibrators and the World Cup this year?

The final word goes to United Nations boss Kofi Annan who not only celebrates the fact that his homeland of Ghana made the World Cup, but also recognizes its contributions to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness:

“The fact is that the World Cup makes us green with envy,” Annan wrote in a guest editorial in Bild am Sonntag newspaper. “As the only game in the world that is played in every country and by people of every race and religion, football is one of the few institutions that is as exceptional as the United Nations.”

Take that you naysayers.

Okay, there are many things more important than football and the World Cup (I’ve heard). But for goodness sake, it’s only one mnoth out of every four years. Let it go, people, let it go. I guess shaming people into not watching the WC is a worthwhile cause. (?)

Any-old-who…is Berlin picking up, those that are there?

That does it!

If Kofi Annan thinks it is good, then it must be righteous!

Next thing you know, Pelé will be joining the anti-WC groups, says the WC is overrated, and the 1958 WC was better anyways.

Hey All
I was in Korea during the world cup and fantastic doesn’t even begin to describe it. I got a chance to see the Korea / Turkey game in Daegu, brilliant! But one thing is for sure I want to see another country where over 100 000 people watch a world cup game on a giant screen, stand up and cheer then sit down and help clean up afterwards. With the most serious injuries being a strained wrist from waving the flag. Made the world cup seem almost civilized…..and definately tons of fun

Ze,what is your fixation with Pele? He is the best to have played the game. And I am not Brasilian, amigo. World so called leaders should pay heed and promote peace, fair play and harmony through futbol. The wars around the world should take a month’s vacation. Any woman, man, and or club wanting to be negative about the cup should smell the cafe and join us in the biggest fiesta deportiva. Viva Brasil. Viva el futbol.

Dino: it’s just that when he opens his mouth, he says something that’s either controversial or just plain awkward. So saying something against the WC would fit him nicely. :)

Of course, I have much respect for him. Make no mistake. But he does say strange things from time to time, so it’s a bit amusing to follow what he says to the press around here.

PS. “around here” = “here in Brazil”. I don’t know why WCB stopped showing my flag.

“Not everyone loves the World Cup?”. So? Lovers of the World Cup couldn’t care less. It comes every four years. We love the excitement, the games, the goals, hate the bad refereeing, hate when your team loses, hate having no nails left to bite, sleepless nights in the southern hemisphere, but, but, but, there is no other sport in the world than is remotely close to even compare it to the World Cup. Amreican gridiron is crap, World Series baseball is a joke being played in one country, rugby league has a following of 135 people, rugby union 97, aussie rules 178, and each calls itself the greatest game of all. Ple-e-e-e-ase. There is only ONE football, the rest are handball games.

enzo’s hit the nail on the head. The delusion of american and australian sports is unbelievable bordering on the utter ignorant. What’s worse is that some television shows, particularly in Australia, who are affiliated with these sports, simply cover the world cup sporadically for ratings purposes rather than because they have a genunine interest in the sport or event.

Some people just want to piss others off because they are pissed. I think it’s just best to ignore them. Maybe I’d feel differently if I was anywhere else but the US, but between my french bf (he’s been here 7 years) and I, I am the more excited about the WC. I think I will enroll him in a cooking class :-P

So what?! We don’t care about those people who want to stop the World Cup fun!

Even if it became illegal we will still defy that and still watch and play Football no matter what. And I am sure that movement would lose steam if the Football world promoted a backlash against the movement.

Why the hell do they want to stop this event when it is the event that for most part stops wars and terrorism in countries like Israel, Palestine, Iraq, Ivory Coast, and the list goes on, even though briefly in a way that puts the UN to shame?

I hope they’d explain themselves!!!
