I personally think that argentina and germany the two most impressive teams so far by a mile are playing each other to early. it should be the final.

brazil and france will be to aging sides battiling out, I feel brazil will do enougth, france are still not the side they were, and spains simpley bottled it last night.

england portugal, I feel this could be a very niggley game, we england are playing miles of world cup winning form, technically but portgual are hardly flying themselves , I see this going to extra time where england will sneak it (bias comment I know)

Italy versus Ukraine – Italy again havent impressed that much but are doing a job, they lack a world class striker of a baggio or even a rossi in 82 but are doing enougth and against a poor ukraine side they will ease through.

I don’t get this. Portugal without key players? I’ll tell you one thing, this is coming from a Portuguese, no one really knows why Big Phil puts on Costinha over Petit, ’cause frankly he stinks and we’re glad he won’t play. Deco is the only casualty amongst the team, and it’s not like we’re completely doomed without him. Tiago is just as good and is truly becoming one of Portugal’s brightest future stars.

Therefore, we still have the same starting eleven minus Costinha (no big deal) and Deco. Ronaldo has stated that he’s 90% fit and will play on Saturday. Surely our starting lineup against England will have much more talent and will give them a harder time than the likes of T&T, Paraguay, Sweden and Ecuador (all of whom England struggled against…miserably!)

There is little doubt in my mind that Portugal will win.
England has had very mediocre showings against VERY weak opposition so far.
Portugal on the other hand won a war against Holland, one that England would never have survived.
Portugal is wounded, but this may actually energize them.
Costinha is not that essential, and Deco will be the only one really missing. If you remember Owen is missing too, this will make it even.
Portugal has a coach who is ten times better than England’s.
Portugal clicks and connects more as a team.
England on paper has more talent, but that’s about it: on paper. The game is played on the pitch, not on paper.
Everybody here underestimating Portugal will be in for a big surprise.
I predict Portugal will win mark my words.

The Portugal/England game could go either way. Portugal has been playing better soccer and even without Deco they should threat to score on England a lot. England has had trouble scoring all tournament. The problem for Portugal is that they have around 5 players with a yellow card and if one of them gets another he will be kicked out because of card accumulation. The odds of that happening are pretty good, but I have to go with the better team.

One paragraph you mention how england struggled miserably in their first four showings. Then one paragraph later mention “very mediocre” performances.

Be more inconsistent if possible. Can you even be ‘very mediocre’…does that not defy the concept of mediocrity.

How would england have not been able to survive against the dutch? Was Figo’s dive or headbutt as result of fortitude and strength of a team?

Owen was an interchangeable piece of a formation better suited to Crouch’s ability to control beckham/cole’s crosses. Owen was expendable and cannot be compared to Deco by any means…

Unless of course you refer to the gentlemanly manner that Deco exudes while diving all over the pitch…

England has played mediocre all tournament and it is time for them to go home.

Brasil will struggle against France’s strong defensive midfield (Vieira and Makelele) but will hang on in the end.

Italy made it here with a lot of help from the officials. Against USA they were beneficial of many calls, and ofcourse they were helped by the ref against australia. that was not a penalty, the italian player instigated contact and could have easily maneuvered around the aussie player. Italy get’s a free pass to the semis but it ends there. They tied USA and who knows what couldve happened against Australia…

Too bad for the host country that they had to run into the best team so far in the quarterfinals. Only reason why the Germans stand a chance is because it is in Berlin.

As far as Scolari starting Costinha over Petit… I beleive that he is doing it for a reason. I have a lot of confidence in Scolari. And let me ask you sometning… If he isn’t 10 times better then Ericsson, then why does England want him as coach? If England had any say so in the matter, Scolari would be the coach for England. But he turned them down! Sorry.

As far as England’s performance is concerned.. I’m pretty sure that even the England media and fans will tell you that it hasn’t exactly been exciting.

MY WORLD CUP PREDICTIONS:
Since I predicted that in 1998, it’s going to be France vs Brazil, it was indeed France vs Brazil. In 2002, I told all my friends and family that it is going to be GERMANY vs BRAZIL, my favorite EUROPEAN and SOUTH AMERICAN FOOTBALL TEAM.
For the 2006 WORLD CUP, my predictions are:

Germany vs Argentina: Germany will win due to home field advantage. This is going to be a TOUGH MATCH!!! (2-1)

England vs Portugal: England because of David Beckam. (1-0)

Italy vs Ukraine: Italy because of their more experienced strikers. (2-0)

Brazil vs France: My FAVORITE MATCH (1998 World Cup REMATCH). Brazil will win this one with atleast 2-0 lead because of having RONALDO, RONALDINHO, and other far more skilled BRAZILIAN strikers in comparison to the French team whose main key players are Henry and Zidane. I predict RONALDO will score at least 1 or both of the goals for Brazil with the help of his teammates, especially Ronaldinho

GERMANY VS BRAZIL
(Prediction: Can be Germany or Brazil. But probably Brazil will win because even though they will play the host nation. Combination of the top Brazilian strikers will be too much for the Germany goalkeeper and defense to bear, thus giving Brazil their hard fought victory over Germany, just like it did in 2002.) This is going to be the same teams that played in 2002. THIS IS GOING TO BE SWEET REMATCH but with much younger players on the German Team. And NO, Argentina, England, Portugal, Ukraine, Italy, and France will NOT LIVE to see their spot on the Finals. It will in fact be GERMANY (Top Euro team) VS Brazil (Top South American Team) on the Finals Stage in Berlin with HOPEFULLY Brazil defeating Germany in their own BACKYARD. But whether it’s going to be Germany or Brazil, I like both teams in their own respective ways, but Brazil has far more popular strikers (Ronaldo), midfielders (Ronaldinho), and defenders (Cafu), etc. My favorite African team would be GHANA. In fact if Brazil did not have Ronaldo and Ronaldinho, and Ghana had their captain against Brazil, it would have been a very interesting match.

Favorite World Cup Player: RONALDO (will have at least 17-18 WORLD CUP GOALS: he will be the 2006 FIFA world cup player of the year if BRAZIL WINS!!!); and RONALDINHO: the traffic conductor for the Brazilian strikers. I like Ronaldo and Ronaldinho about the same because one is a gifted striker while the other one is a gifted players. BRAZIL: THE BEST FOOTBALL NATION OF THE 20th and will be THE TOP FOOTBALL NATION of the 21st Century. (Let’s do a SAMBA dance!)

My original (pre-Tournament) predictions: Netherlands, Croatia, Portugal, Brazil.

Current predictions: Germany, Italy, Portugal, Brazil.

Germany-Argentina will be very close. Argentina is technically the better team, but I think the home crowd will lift Germany past them.

Italy-Ukraine seems like a cake-walk on paper–Ukraine doesn’t have the experience or the legacy–but I think Ukraine will give a good showing. Still, Italy will hold out in the end.

Portugal is hurt by Deco’s absence, but I think Scolari’s wits will beat England’s lackluster play.

Brazil vs France makes me uneasy as a Brazil fan. 1998 is still a fresh memory! I think Brazil rises to the level of its opponents, however, and Ronaldinho will finally come alive to help defeat France.

Then: Germany beats Italy, Brazil beats Portugal. Portugal takes third place over Italy.

That’s from me but I would not bet on these picks ;-)

Just a comment about Brazil’s weak midfield play. So what? Ghana is the perfect example. Ghana beat Brazil as badly as any team has beaten any other team in this Cup at midfield in the first half, and Brazil still won handily. I noted the number of loose balls and challenges won by both sides, and Ghana at one point won 8 straight times in the midfield.

The point is, Brazil does not rely on midfield play. They haven’t for years now. They are a counter-attacking team, and they do it better than anyone in the world. To a lesser extent, Italy is the same. The US beat Italy convincingly in the midfield in their group play match, but it took an own goal for the US to get away with a draw.

So all of you claiming that Brazil’s weak midfield will somehow be their undoing, rest assured that such talk brings a knowing smile to Brazil players’ and fans’ faces.

One caveat: if and when Brazil runs into a fast, big, talented offensive team, only then will they have trouble. Sorry, Frenchies, it ain’t your side. They’re big, but they aren’t that fast and their defense is suspect (especially in goal). No, I only see Germany in the remaining 7 that will give Brazil a reason to worry.

The nun kicking the ball in AlexanderPlatz so amused the Italians, they stopped and played with her. They completely forgot they had a final to play, so the referee called Australia back to play the final against Ukraine. They won and ended up against Argentina.

Argentina? Yes, because the Germans, playing the game against Argentina, got upset at Argentinian fans shouting some… some chant they could not understand (”Adios nonino”? yes, nonino Piazzolla, from Stuttgart). Reja, my opinion is that Germany will beat Argentina. Germany is a very strong team and they are in their home turf. I think Italy has been playing lousy and is only in the quarter finals by pure luck, I think Ukraine will beat them 1-0. I do think Portugal will beat England, if not because they are playing better, because they are cheating and swimming in the grass. I’m not sure about France and Brasil, I don’t want to say just because I’m supersticious and I don’t want to jinx my Brasileros.

By luck? It was not by luck i can tell you that Diana, Portugal won because of our support and belief in them, they didn´t want to disapoint our nation. They gave 100% in spite of the dificulties they endure during the match such as sudden loss of Cristiano due to the foul he suffered. Everyone can tell that it was intentionally, to put him out of the game but it didn´t turned out has expected. So they kept poking more of our players. I know that the attitude tha Figo revealed in the second half of the game was regrettable but all the Portuguese team including him, were sick of the way they had been treated by Netherlands team during the match. And you still say we won by luck? That was war out there and has nothing to do with luck but with strength of will.

Haha so sorry diana but my gut feeling is that france will beat brazil tomorrow, you really don’t know how hard that is for me to say, even though my team manchester united supply two of thier players (saha and silvestre). Again our Iberian friends express their disapoitment of lackluster performance at the world cup stage by taking it on their neighbours. It seems that the race to influence the world is as alive as back in the 17th century. Grow up…get over it…and encourage your players to put their hearts on their sleaves. We already know that most, if not all of these players are capable…otherwise they would have not made it this far. Germaine, I wish I would have been right in my guess on the Brasil france game, I cried like a winnie! Have to admit, however, the french outplayed my Brasileros, better luck next time. My opinion is that the English should have taken that game, even though they had 11 men on the field and England only 10, the Portuguese were still not able to score; if Beckham had not been injured and Rooney not thrown out, there could have possibly been a different outcome. As far as sportsmanship, in my opinion (and that’s all it is, an opinion), I saw unsportsmanlike behavior in both teams. Although it looked as though Portugal toned it down quite a bit in the rude behavior department, probably because of all the critique they received for that game. In all, I think Portugal got lucky, as the English had more possesion of the ball and I saw more scoring chances for them. Portugal seems to be sneaking in by the seat of their pants. Although, I got to say, I don’t mind at all watching more of dishy Ronaldo.

Well as usual the british media’s ‘everyones to blame but us’ campaign is up and running. Like millions of other england fans i was totally distraught at our dismisal from the world cup on saturday, though like most, once penalties kicked in, thier was an air of inpending doom hanging over us. So its now 48 hours after the match, and after time to analyse the performance of england in this tournament, it stands out like a ’sore thumb’ that we were just not good enough.
Don’t get me wrong, i bought into the ‘golden generation’ rubbish as easlly as most, though i base my actions on the fact, i’m an active match going supporter of many years, indeed watching manchester united play week in and week out, over the years i have seen the nevilles, beckham, ferdinand and rooney play. All players moveing into their prime together, in fact rooney being a freak of nature, in being such a great player years ahead of his prime, so this along with regualy seeing gerrard, lampard, cole etc playing to such high standards, why should’nt have we been optimistic ? But has i said many times before the competition, no team, not even the greatest wins any competition without the element of ‘luck’ ! once again we lacked this in abundance, its not an excuse, its a fact, but i will not dwell on it.
So back to the media, the ‘ victim’ of thier hate campaign to whip up sales post world cup, this time is’nt an english player, as per ‘beckham 98 read rooney 2006′ ! Oh no, getting the treatment this time is ‘ronaldo’ ! omg its so laughable i could cry, are we really so pathetic to see that once again we were pathetic, incompetant, devoid of tactics, rudderless ( erickson please pack bags immediatley and never come back) and most incredible guilty of squandering the talents our star players obviously have.

On this day, is thoughts were only of his teamate and his country, just has i would hope, if roles were reversed ‘rooneys’ would be ! and believe me, watching them play together week in and week out, they are very much the same creature, rooney would have done exactly the same, their both ‘winners’! I can see no long term damage to thier relationship, sure rooney is hurting, we all are. and sure the campaign will build over the weeks, because it involves two ‘manchester united’ players. And believe me, those of you not from britian, nothing but nothing sells papers in this country than the name ‘manchester united’. So has a england fan i’ll hurt for a while and get on with things, as a manchester united supporter, i’ll baton down the hatchets once again, and wait for the hatred and bile that will follow. i can’t believe portugal lost that match i think it was obvious to everyone that portugal was the better team and they would have won if it wasn’t for that penalty which by the way wasn’t even a penalty the guys foot didn’t even touch his.

What I am saying is this (it is valid for all countries, including Spain), these players are paid insane wages. They pocket more then Doctors, highly qualified engineers or ministers without including all the royalties they pocket through advertising, TV appearances and so forth.
They represent their countries; they are our ambassadors as well as role models for millions of kids. In my opinion, the least they could do is behave on the pitch play good football, in order to elevate sport and moral standards. When they behave unsportsmanlike, they ought to be stripped of their privileges. Banned. Full stop. There are thousands waiting to take their boots.
I also regret the “professionalisation” of sport. I believe it spoils the very spirit of sport what ever the game. Big time (money corrupts.
Amateur teams contests could be and should be both more honest, more lively, more representative in term of player’s nationality and funnier!
It also would be fairer on poorer countries.

Well done Portugal, the second goal was very unlucky. They showed good spirit till the end.
As for the Rooney Ronaldo affair, Yes I think that Rooney is a liability.I don’t particularly like his attitude.
