LiveBlog: Trinidad and Tobago-Sweden

Trinidad and Tobago tied Sweden 0-0 in their first World Cup match ever. Playing a man down for most of the second half, the Soca Warriors hung on to get a point. Follow all the play-by-play below and leave your comments about the match.

Full time Final score is 0-0. Trinidad and Tobago gets a point in their World Cup debut. Sweden will be kicking itself for not getting three points against one of the tournament’s smallest teams and playing a man up for most of the second half. If ever a team can consider a tie a win it would be T&T. Man of the match is keeper Shaka Hislop who made countless great saves.

90:00 Larsson booked for a foul from behind. Trinidad player takes his dear time getting up. They are happy to let the clock tick. 3 minutes of official added time.

89:00 Sweden looks to mount one last attack. There should be a bit of added time. Nerves abound on both sides. Sancho will yet another clearance.

86:47 Lots of nervous faces in the Sweden sections of the crowd. They know their team should be winning but they very well could walk away with only a point. Ibrahimovic blasts one over the crossbar. Still 0-0 and the hopes of the Caribbean rest on the final 3 minutes.

85:02 Can the minnows do it? Playing a man down for almost the entire second half, Trinidad has somehow kept Sweden off the board. 0-0. Ljunberg limping a bit for Sweden.

84:02 Sweden holds an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks and probably a 12,000 – 2 advantage in shots but the most important stat is the 0-0 score.

83:02 Sweden corner kick. How the heck is Trinidad hanging on a man down? A lot of courage from the Soca Warriors. Cleared away momentarily and Sancho clears for another Sweden corner.

81:34 Sweden with an incredible opportunity in the box but yet again they can’t finish. How many times have I typed that today? Story of the game has been Hislop in goal and Sweden’s poor finishing. Wow.

80:22 The Soca Warriors get a corner kick. Can they see a miracle happen? No, cleared away by Sweden. Still 0-0. What a great ten minutes we have left.

79:27 Shaka Hislop with another brilliant save for Trinidad. This guy is keeping his country alive. He is the hero of the match no matter what happens.

78:11 The rat tail has finally left the pitch. Let’s hope Wilhemsson does something about that thing before the next game. Obviously it is a bad luck charm. In addition to just being ridiculous.

77:15 Having no rooting interest in this game at all I can honestly say the next 13 minutes are going to be a thriller. The beauty of the World Cup. Two subs coming on for a Sweden team desperate to get three points.

75:01 Hislop warned for delaying the game. He then makes his 1,000th save of the game. Still 0-0 in this one. Trinidad playing a man down but might have a higher power on their side today.

73:45 Yellow card shown to Dwight Yorke. Sweden gets another free kick but is useless once again. Must be a very frustrating time for Sweden fans.

72:31 Just a public service reminder that we’ll be liveblogging the next game as well. Argentina vs. Ivory Coast should be a great one. The good news is that Daryl will be manning the blog so you don’t have to deal with me much longer. Thanks again for tuning into our site.

71:17 All of the action is in the Trinidad end but Sweden just can’t figure out how to put one in the goal. If the Soca Warriors come away with a point from this one they should be arrested for stealing.

68:57 Hislop is going on the currency in Trinidad. He has been the hero of the match with another strong save on yet another good Sweden scoing chance.

67:57 Do you suppose there will be a clearance sale at Ikea if Sweden loses this one? I need a desk that I can’t figure out how to put together.

66:22 Whitley on for Theobald for Trinidad. Good substitution a man down and the score tied 0-0. Fresh legs needs for the Soca Warriors to hang on.

65:27 Roland gets the runner-up award for comments: “Holy crap! If Sweden loses to a diminished Trinidad I fear for their suicide rate.”

64:07 Sancho gets knocked down to the ground. Sancho is one of the nicest human beings you will ever meet. I recommend that all of you meet him soon.

63:12 For playing a man down Trinidad is not being completely dominated. Still, Sweden should be winning this one. One mistake either way could be the difference.

61:00 Still 0-0. Trinidad playing a man down. Allback on for Svensson for Sweden.

58:18 Dwight Yorke with a cracker of a shot that just goes over the ball. On the other end Ibrahimovic is stopped by a great save from Hislop. Wow, things are opening up.

57:37 Anyone know the Swedish word for “rat tail”? I believe it is “Wilhemsson”.

56:01 Why is the Sweden coach wearing a kit on the sideline? Is he going to come in the second half?

54:51 Yet another good direct chance from Sweden but all for naught. Trinidad still holds on to a 0-0 tie playing a man down. I wanted to type “Trinidad leads 0-0″ but that was the beer talking.

53:28 When I grow up I want to be Dwight Yorke. How can a guy that old party so much and still play well?

52:50 Larsson’s shot is blocked in the box. I should just copy that and paste it since it will happen a lot this game. Samuel out for T&T and Glen is in. MLS representin’

49:36 Does FIFA have an award for first red card of the tournament? Avery John needs something to make himself feel better.

48:35 So now we have close to 45 minutes of Sweden attacking and Trinidad trying to bunker in. This could turn out to be an interesting one if they can hold on for a fair amount of time.

47:15 Sweden a direct kick from just outside the box. A goal here would be devestating for Trinidad which must now play with 10 men. Ball hit into the wall and the Soca Warriors dodge a bullet for the time being.

45:24 Avery John takes out the rat tail Sweden and he is show a yellow card. His second of the match and he is sent off. WOW that chances the complexion of this game. Tough call but probably a fair one.

45:01 We’re underway again in Dortmund with Sweden and T&T squaring off after a scoreless first half. Man of the match so far has been the Trini keeper Hislop who has made a few good saves to keep his team alive.

End of Halftime They just showed a great Puma commercial with Pele. I hadn’t seen it before. Thanks to your feedback I did get another beer at half so be forewarned that if this LiveBlog dies out around the 60th minute it is because I am passed out in my chair.

Halftime Not a bad first half. Sweden had the better of the opportunities but were unable to convert. Trinidad and Tobago created some chances as well and began to gain confidence towards the end of the half. The score is 0-0. I’m going to go ice my hands and will be back right before the start of the second half. What are your thoughts on the game?

45:00 Great shot of the Trini fans in the stands. Two minutes of added time. This will be a victory for Trinidad if they go in tied.

43:45 Approaching halftime. The big question is should I have another beer and risk being incoherent the second half or should I stick to water? I’ll let you decide.

41:45 Zlatan with a shot on goal for Sweden but Hislop is up to the challenge. If you are in goal for T&T today you are going to be quite sore tomorrow. Sweden is peppering the goal with shots.

40:54 If Trinidad makes it to the half with the score o-o they will consider it a success. Sweden has to be a little frustrated that they haven’t been able to take advantage of their opportunities.

39:39 I happen to like Chris Birchall in the Soca Warriors midfield. He plays with a lot of heart. Another solid shot from Sweden and Hislop saves it. It might be only a matter of time for Sweden. Still 0-0

37:37 Sweden continues to look like they are going to nail one but don’t. Larssen with a diving header that goes over the crossbar. Will T&T be able to survive one close chance after another?

35:03 Avery John comes up lame after a hard Sweden tackle. Shots of the crowd show T&T supporters in the same section as Sweden. Hmmm, wonder if they’ll do the same thing when England play Sweden.

33:45 No, you haven’t taken bad acid. That is indeed cottonwood you see floating around the pitch. The stuff is all over the place here in Germany. Killing my sinuses. 0-0 is the score.

32:08 Looks like the T&T players prefer playing in the one strip of sun on the pitch. The ball is staying on one side of the field. Great shot from Edwards from far out but eaten up by the Sweden keeper.

30:18 I think T&T needs to consider getting new boots. Their players are having trouble staying on their feet.

28:35 Sweden has a 4-0 lead in shots. Trinidad just can’t string it together in the final third of the field. Sweden’s backline is more formidable than the Maginot Line.

27:38 Trinidad and Tobago continue to hang on. 0-0 is the score. Do you think anyone in the entire country of T&T is doing anything other than watching this game? I don’t think so.

25:06 A Larseen header for Sweden is way off the mark. They are showing Beckenbauer in the stands. How the hell did he get from Frankfurt to Dortmund in under an hour? Does he have his own helicopter?

23:43 Ljunberg is moving well for Sweden on the wing. He has had a lot of foot pain and has had to have his foot drained of blood after every match. I might have to do the same if I LiveBlog three games a day.

22:25 Every player on Sweden has a name that ends in “son”. Except for the ones that don’t. Like Ibrahimivic, who almost scores right as I type. The close chances aren’t going in for Sweden.

19:10 Birchall is playing a strong game for the Soca Warriors. Sweden earns the corner after Sancho clears it over the end line. Will the Swedes score one of their pattened set pieces? Not this time. Cleared away and we remain at 0-0.

17:20 Comment of the day from reader Ze: “Wilhemssen is like the bastard son of David Beckham and Roberto Baggio.”

15:45 I’m kind of used to these World Cup games having early goals. Sweden has had their chances but T&T has been able to hold on by a thread. For our US audience, that is clearly Hislop in goal. Please ignore your announcers. Actually through beer bottles at them if you can.

14:07 Sweden corner is cleared away. Still 0-0. Nasty tackle against the rat tailed Sweden player. Almost knocked the hair off of his head. He gets up and lives.

13:33 Sweden’s midfield is dancing around like they have no one bothering them. T&T looks like they will play behind the ball and try to spring Stern John if they can. Stern is kind of a cool name. Sure beats being called Bob.

10:30 Unlike Paraguay earlier today, the underdog Soca Warriors do not look intimidated. They are passing the ball with authority and looking for their chances. Their defense however looks like it could give up a few goals today.

9:23 Ladies and gentlemen we have our first rat tail in the tournament. Sweden’s Wilhemssen is sporting hair that should have been banned in 1986. His team looks good though.

7:37 They’re showing the other Trinidad keeper Jack on the sideline with ice on his leg. Maybe he was a late game scratch? Maybe he just likes the feel of cold ice against his skin? You decide.

6:01 Ibrahimovic called for a handball before he gets off a tough shot. Sweden looks like they want to follow England’s lead and get an early statement goal in this one.

5:09 Trinidad keeper’s name is Shaka, which for some reason makes me want to sing the song Rock the Kasbah.

4:20 Ljunberg goes down right at the edge of the box. Direct kick for the Swedes. Dangerous opportunity early on. Three men over the ball. Larssen smokes it wide of the goal. Exciting start to the game.

2:25 Dwight Yorke playing a withdrawn forward position with Stern John up top. T&T is going to try to counter attack in this one. If that isn’t the case I will pay you each a dollar.

1:08 Sweden earns a corner kick. The shot by Lucic is blocked off and we have another corner. It is misplayed by Hislop bit T&T comes away with it.

:034 Another field with shadows. Can’t FIFA do something to block out the sun for a month?

Kickoff We are underway in Dortmund with the red-clad Soca Warriors of Trinidad and Tobago squaring off against the yellow-clad Swedes. For this game I will start with a light beer that has some kind of lemon flavor to it. Very refreshing after a couple of darker Hefeweizens.

Pregame:
3 minute countdown: Sweden gets its turn to sing with pride. The crowd is in full force. Can’t tell what the heck they are singing but undoubtedly it is bringing a tear to eyes all over Sweden. Great country with great people. I wish them well in this game. Would be happy with either side winning.

4 minute countdown: The T&T anthem is played. The players sing it with pride. What a great scene it is before each match. The World Cup is a marvel.

6 minute countdown: The players are led out onto the pitch. What a great moment it is for the small island nation of Trinidad and Tobago, making its first appearance in the World Cup. The Sweden fans are out in full force. Time to forget the first game and get pumped for this one.

8 minute countdown: The lineups are announced. Great news for my friends back home. Brent Sancho is starting in the World Cup for T&T. How far he has come! Marvin Andrews is out for the Soca Warriors with an injury.

1o minute countdown: If I see another commercial featuring either Oliver Kahn or Franz Beckenbauer I might pack my bags and leave Germany. Who am I kidding? I am in heaven here. Good beer, great football and another 90 minutes of liveblogging. A blessed man, I am. Thanks for sharing in the fun.

15 minute countdown: Now we are treated to a profile about Dwight Yorke and blessedly lots of pictures of Trini women dancing half clothed. Yorke is a funny guy. Has played forever. Has had his share of success. He even has a stadium named after him in T&T.

20 minute countdown: German television shows a feature about Henrik Larsson. For an older player he is incredibly fit. Sweden will not be playing with its normal number 1 keeper Andreas Isakkson who is out with a concusion. After liveblogging the England-Paraguay game I know how he feels.

30 minute countdown: The scene from Dortmund is one of Swedish yellow and blue with also a nice representation from those Soca Warriors fans from the Caribbean who are decked out in red and black. The Dortmund stadium is a classic facility that should be a wonderful backdrop for an interesting match between the representatives from Europe and CONCACAF.

After a dull England-Paraguay came, this one has to be more exciting. Care to share your predictions?

Whoooo! Thx LiveBlog team!! Your saviours with laptops for us common people!

  • Ali Siddiqui

See you all in a bit!

  • I predict Sweden will win by a landslide, maybe 4-0, and Larsson will be the man of the match.

  • Stuart

Damn ESPN360…the only streaming outlet in the US and they’re only showing the ARG v CIV game today. I was really keen to see England’s and Sweden’s form in their opening matches. Sounds like England wasn’t that together on attack given the lack of scoring. I’m hoping for, and expecting, much better out of the more disciplined Swedes. I’ll side with ze’ and look for Larsson to lead the way today.

  • Stuart

…and Bob, you’re missing your calling, you should be doing live announcing. You’re side comments are hilarious!

  • http://www.worldcupcorner.com Miha

10 minutes before the start it looks like a clear win for Sweden for me.

  • ben

hey stuart the sweden games on abc in america. the english game was too but u didnt miss much

  • http://sports.godblessthefreaks.org Philip

I hate that US TV cuts off the anthems unless the US is playing (and sometimes even then). It’s one of my favorite sports traditions.

  • Laura

There’s only one Sancho – SANCHO!

I am robot dancing with happiness right now!

  • Roland

    Univision shows the anthems.

On paper, I like Sweden in this one, but they haven’t exactly been lighting it up lately; and T&T have players in the English league. This could be interesting.

  • zer0man

how come Hislop is playing but not in the lineup? Is the T&T keeper wearing the wrong shirt?

  • http://terpbuck.blogspot.com Ben

Its funny the US anouncers keep on calling the goalie JACK even though it is clearly Shaka Hislop

  • http://www.pertinentverge.blogspot.com Darkoze

Lot of players with “ic” at the ned of their names. Think I’ll be rooting for the Yellows today.

  • http://www.soccercommercials.com Chris C

Sancho!!! As Laura said, THERE’S ONLY ONE SANCHO! I still hate you Roberto. Don’t forget to get the beers in.

  • Wilhemssen is like the bastard son of David Beckham and Roberto Baggio.

  • Ninj

    S A N C H O! soo excited for t&t’s handsome lad!

  • Ninj

p.s. anyone in the states should be watching Univision, better color and announcers that aren’t dumbasses

  • Paul

This game is going largely as predicted, except Sweden isn’t up by 4 yet. Hey, what’s all the white stuff floating around the pitch? Butterflies? Pigeon feathers?

  • Laura

Sweden does look more dominant but T&T are fighting and don’t seem too intimidated. And Sancho is still hott. If T&T does anything in the WC, I’ll have to put my chainsaw with his signature on it on Ebay ASAP.

  • Ninj

the white stuff flying around looks like seeds of some kind. Cottonwood trees nearby? I heard it’s a killer allergy season there right now.

  • In Iceland, you’re required by law to name your son with your first name + “son” as a surname. For example, Bob’s son surname would have to be “Bobsson”. Girls have to be called “dóttir” instead, as in “Bobsdóttir”. Björk, for example, is called Björk Guðmundsdóttir.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Icelandic_name

People from all over the world must find it funny that we have so many “Ro”s on the Brazil team too – Ronaldo (2), Roberto Carlos, Zé Roberto, Robinho (Robson), Rogério Ceni, etc. Just a coincidence though.

  • @Paul: brazilian commentators are saying it’s some kind of insects.

  • Ninj

I had no idea, thanks ze’!

  • Ninj

    wow, nice shot from t&t!

  • Roland

T&T need more shots on goal like that to be in this game. Sweden is patient because they know they can score if they need to.

But Trinidad look to have settled and are playing with confidence.

  • Jesus, look at T&T’s attack.

Here at Brazil we have a common saying – “Quem não faz leva”, meaning something like “If you don’t score you’ll get scored upon”. Sweden is looking better, but they’re not being effective enough to actually take advantage and at this kind of situation it’s pretty easy for a team to be lazy on defense and be surprised by a lesser team.

  • James

Most of the scandanavian countries use that paternal naming system. I don’t know that it’s required by law, as in iceland, but it is traditional.

  • Oh thanks Bob, I didn’t know it was cottonwood, my bad (on the above comment). Commentators on TV are saying they’re insects all the time, but I guess they’re the ones who have been taking acid.

  • Roland

That was pretty. So close. Corner kick for Sweden – major advantage.

  • Garin

Larsson is starting to make me angry – he’s wasted like 5 chances either heading or kicking the ball 10 metres over the goal. If that was Klose out there Trinidad would have had to invoke the mercy rule.

  • http://blue2rose.blogspot.com Blah-Me

Sweden’s probably gonna bag this game like a piece of cake in the hands of a hungry kid (sad, I know)!

I’d except it to be nothing less than a miracle if T&T wins this one.

    Salam.

  • Roland

T&T made a major defensive error back to back. They’re lucky to escape that time.

  • littleguy

Sweden can’t seem to finish their chances….neither could England…or Poland. With the exception of Germany…hey…it’s an omen, Euro teams will have trouble finishing-that means that when the US plays the Czechs it will go in our favor! OK, I’m pathetically grasping at straws. Sweden’s going to score and so will Czech Rep too….

  • http://sports.godblessthefreaks.org Philip

In general the NYT’s WC blog can’t hold a candle to this one, but this photo caption cracks me up: “Swedish hipsters in disarray as TV fails at Good World bar in New York.”

  • Here it comes, T&T is starting to believe.

  • http://www.pertinentverge.blogspot.com Darkoze

I like that fact that Wilhemssen is bringing back the rat tail. An excellent kindergarden to elementary school-aged hairdo(nt).

  • Larsson has the best mouth expressions (?).

  • Roland

Right now you would have to say this is great news for T&T. They’re starting to get shots on goal and their defense is frustrating the Swedes. Is that the smell of upset in the air?

  • http://blue2rose.blogspot.com Blah-Me

Philip.. that is quite funny! I can imagine FIFA maniacs kicking at it even.

littleguy.. thats again something to ponder upon. Is it a curse? Or plain bad luck? Interesting point rather.

I’d love to see if Sweden is in the list of the cursed too?

Oh and I wonder who would dare to do such an evil deed!

    Salam.

  • Michiel

Is t&t aiming for a draw vs. sweden and england, hoping to win vs. paraguay? Because that’s not gonna work.

  • http://sassan.blogspot.com Sassan

Wow I can’t believe it no goals!!!

  • Laura

Bob – go ahead and have that beer. You’ll need the nap after all your typing today! Just be sure to drink water too. Is there anything veggie to eat in Germany?

  • Go get another drink, Bob. You deserve it.

  • http://blue2rose.blogspot.com Blah-Me

Michicel… Considering how everyone forsaw Sweden’s victory over T&T – I would have to say a draw is much more than they can ask for. Pretty much a victory as far as they are concerned.

  • http://www.soccercommercials.com Chris C

Roberto if you don’t have another beer I’ll personally kick your ass as soon as you get off the plane. Suck it up and get to drinkin’!

  • Lola

Trinny is gonna take this one, I really have a feeling. Sweden just isn’t pullin it together

  • Keyser

T&T: another team who has no idea on how to score a goal. They may try by attacking with more than 1 and half players for example.
Sweden had a couple of nice chances. once they score once, the match is over.

  • James

For those of us watching in the US, does anyone know why the announcers are at a horse track? Is Musberger getting his bets in during commercial breaks?

  • Tommy

The 1st 20 mins were boring then the play picked up I see Sweden scoring 1 or 2 goals.

  • Dino

Hey guys and gals greetings from Alabama USA !!!

  • ben

james the belmont stakes (final leg of triple crown) comes up after the game

  • http://deleted Prophet

Trinidad Chris Birchall needs to pull the trigger. T&T are not going to walk into the Swedish net. I’d play the second half the same way with just the one striker up front, then a few minutes from full time, push a couple more men forward. Good going T&T!

  • http://www.soccercommercials.com Chris C

James- I think the Belmont Stakes are later today and ABC figured they could save money by killing two birds with one stone so to speak.

Bob- You know what could help keep the swelling of your hands down from all of your crazy typing? Cold beer. You just have to be sure to drink it before it has a chance to warm up.

  • James

still a little insulting. they wouldn’t do the halftime show of the nba finals from belmont. would it kill disney to spring for a studio show? sometimes (most of the time) i hate the way espn/abc/etc cover sports in this country.

  • James

i guess i shouldn’t complain too much, i should just be happy i can watch all the games on basic cable.

  • Red already. So much for T&T’s dream.

  • Roland

Stupid play. That should have been a red card straight away.

  • http://deleted Prophet

    Sweden 0 – T&T 1, Game over

  • littleguy

Michiel, Tridinad is just hoping to survive, I don’t think they can’t possibly have a “plan”-they are just feeling lucky to be there. Much of their success hanging in with Sweden is just Sweden’s poor luck. But it’s encouraging to me as the USMNT is much, much better thant T&T and they are giving Sweden all they can handle.

  • Ninj

bollocks! no way was that a straight red.

  • Keyser

    ufff… what a foul… even my ankle is hurting…

  • James

going to be that much more difficult for t&t to get the win now

  • Ninj

oh, it was his second, ignore me. still, he got the ball, and the swede certainly played it up.

  • Keyser

ninj, it was a well deserved second yellow.

  • http://www.pertinentverge.blogspot.com Darkoze

Excellent acting job by the rat-tailed Swede…did anyone catch him try to catch the ref’s eye as he squirmed on the ground in “pain”.

  • C’mon SWE, just taking potshots won’t do it.

  • Roland

Insulting American soccer fans is a time honored pasttime for the networks. I hate them. Thank God I can speak Spanish. It’s like night and day. My mono-lingual friends have my sympathy.

  • Roland

Ninj, he went in with *both* feet up. Seemed like a well deserved red to me.

  • http://aprettymove.blogspot.com Lynda

I persist in the perhaps ludicrous belief that T&T can hang on despite this red card.

  • Dino

How about a win with ten men that would be kewl!!!

  • Ninj

Darkoze makes a good point, with the rat-tail haircut, he should have a red card for style alone. hopefully a bruised ankle will keep his mind straight when he next visits the hairdresser.

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

How T&T are surviving, and that too with 10 men ! And everyone was predicting a cakewalk for Swedes.

  • http://blue2rose.blogspot.com Blah-Me

    Darkoze.. lol

I would never have noticed. But its sad that Sweden needed to stoop that low, to get through this game!

    Salam

  • Dino

Salam Alekum and greetings from Alabama USA

  • Ninj

sancho’s going to have earned his pay if t&t get through this…

  • Keyser

    woooooaaahhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!
    almost!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Oh man… would you just look at that.

  • http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/worldcupfan/ dw

    OH! So close for T&T.

  • Ninj

    OOOOh! off the bar!

  • littleguy

The keeper, whatever the final result, should get an award for these stops, it’s the Shaka Show.

  • Ninj

SHAKA! and a smack to the face for the t&t defender… biased ref, much?

  • T&T’s GK has got to be the player of this match. He’s not the one who saved the team (SW’s bad luck did), but he did make some important defenses. It’s more than I’d expect from a GK who never played a WC match.

  • http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/worldcupfan/ dw

Personally, I think Wilhemsson is from an alternate reality where Til Tuesday is still the biggest band in the world and everyone wants to look like Aimee Mann circa 1985.

  • Dino

Man wish I was watching….thanks Bob drink one for me I’m at work

  • Ninj

as a liverpool fan, I’m glad shaka was saving his good game for the WC!

  • russ

T&T is doing great so far. Eat it Sweden.

  • http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/worldcupfan/ dw

The T&T coach looks like the bastard father of Peter Gammons and Tom Wolfe.

  • Roland

Holy crap! If Sweden loses to a diminished Trinidad I fear for their suicide rate.

  • Dino

Fifa should award points for playing a man down..

  • http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/worldcupfan/ dw

I hope Sweden wins. I need to go to Ikea today, and the last thing I need is for them to be closed in mourning.

  • Ninj

Dino – working on a saturday during the WC? cruel!

  • russ

Oh come on Linderhoff. Get up. Is it just me or is the acting even worse this year? And Brazil hasn’t even started playing yet!!

  • Roland

That pitch seems a little slippery.

  • http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/worldcupfan/ dw

I don’t think it was acting. It looks like he landed wrong on that left knee.

  • Dino

Working for a British Co. they assume we in the US don’t watch the WC

  • Laura

Avery John is MOTM for trying to save us from the evil rattail. Ugh.

  • Ninj

that swede needs diving lessons – wait till a player on the other team is at least close to you…

  • http://blue2rose.blogspot.com Blah-Me

I think I’m gonna be dizzy!

Is it a bad referee day? :|

    Salam

  • russ

See Linderhoff is fine. Way to drop out of the game there, buddy. Go T&T!

  • Ninj

    awwww, hugs all round :D

  • Guys, you don’t understand, it’s all this cottonwood changing the direction of the ball.

  • http://blue2rose.blogspot.com Blah-Me

65:27 Roland gets the runner-up award for comments: “Holy crap! If Sweden loses to a diminished Trinidad I fear for their suicide rate.”

    I second that.

As for the concern over IKEA – I could use a sale there, GO SWEDEN?! (such devils you all are!)

    Salam.

  • Keyser

    less than 20′ to go!
    T&T can survive!

  • http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/worldcupfan/ dw

I can’t decide if T&T is playing the game of their lives or if Sweden is THAT out of sync.

  • ben

    hislop for the golden ball

  • littleguy

This might be the best match that Trinidad has ever played in it’s history, even if they end up losing. They are just playing way, way, way over their heads.

  • http://www.pertinentverge.blogspot.com Darkoze

Counterattacking is the only way T&T wins if they keep the swedes off the board

  • Ninj

    S H A K A! Game of his LIFE!

  • Roland

The Swedes are way worried now. I can feel the tension in the cheers of their fans.

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

this is more exciting than england – paraguay match

  • http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/worldcupfan/ dw

Aimee Mann has left the building.

  • What? Are them playing on an ice rink?

  • http://www.pertinentverge.blogspot.com Darkoze

say it aint so…what a save

  • Keyser

    what a save!!!
    go T&T!!!!

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

    What a save by T&T keeper !

  • Ninj

    HOLY F**K!

  • Roland

Man, the Swedes can’t finish. Now Trinidad has a corner!

  • Ken

The T&T coach looks on the verge of cardiac arrest.. HOLY CRAP!

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

    Swedes can’t just score !!!

  • littleguy

Two things 1) I hope Keller has this kind of game against CR and Italia 2) If Trinidad gets a draw do you realize how much that changes the dynamics in this group with England looking shaky, Sweden with only a point and Paraguay looking pretty determined along with T&T?? Experts don’t know nothin’

  • Roland

Great defensive recovery for T&T. Sweden is getting desperate now.

  • What the hell. Sweden can do everything, but not actually get the ball inside the net.

  • James

    Hislop is my hero.

  • Razzle

If T&T can hold Sweden, even Togo has hope. I love the WC.

  • Roland

Sweden is building the pressure though. They can still win it.

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

A draw will be a huge upset, bigger than yesterday’s Polish defeat.

  • http://aprettymove.blogspot.com Lynda

DW-”I can’t decide if T&T is playing the game of their lives or if Sweden is THAT out of sync” yeah, same here!

This is one of the most exciting 0-0 matches I’ve seen.

  • Ninj

it’s the Sancho and Hislop show!

  • mike jones

T & T is cheating though. Theyre actually playing with 2 countries

  • http://www.pertinentverge.blogspot.com Darkoze

ouch, the lanky defender of T&T just took one to the valuables.

  • Keyser

    5 minutes!!!!!
    resist!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Laura

    There’s only one Sancho!

If a statue of Hislop is not in every town square in T&T tomorrow, there is no justice in the world.

  • Roland

This is what pisses me off – the American media will represent a 0 – 0 tie as further proof of the tedium of soccer. But actually, this is a GREAT match.

  • Ninj

Freddie f*cking LUNGE-berg more like. Get up.

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

Courageous defence by the debutants ! Can they hang on for 5 more mins?

  • http://www.conquestgames.net russ

Come on T&T!!! You can do it!!!

  • Ken

Im going to fly down to Dortmund and make a killing selling clean underpants for the crowd..

  • http://www.pertinentverge.blogspot.com Darkoze

    DW and lynda -
sweden has had their chances and they are dictating play, I would lead towards T&T playing better than expected, the Swedes just havent finished.

  • http://www.conquestgames.net russ

Wow, wow. These T&T defenders are amazing

  • Roland

Desperate foul by Larsson. This is a disaster for Sweden.

  • Ken

    I cant freakin take this!

  • Ninj

should’ve been straight red for larsson, didn’t even try to play the ball.

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

Larsson gets a card that matches the colour of his shirt

  • Ninj

This being said, I don’t see England having the finishing troubles that have haunted sweden against T&T.

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

Man of the Match – SHAKA HISLOP

  • Roland

I’ll say this, Trinidad showed up to play. The Europeans better be on notice: the new kids are not gonna lie down. Oh boy.

I still like Spain to win it all;)

  • littleguy

XM announcer just said this is a huge boost for CONCACAF teams (T&T was 4th in CONCACAF behind US, Mex, Costa Rica). Unbelievable!!!!!!!!!! A DRAW!!!!!

  • http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/worldcupfan/ dw

Maybe CONCACAF isn’t that bad after all.

  • There it goes. Big upset, T&T supporters and players are commemorating as if they had won the WC.

There goes my 4-0 prediction. Larsson was a shadow of the Larsson I know. I must remember to not do any more predictions…

  • http://www.soccercommercials.com Chris C

That was a great example of how a 0-0 score in soccer can still be a fantastic game to watch. Way to go T&T! You deserved the point.

  • http://aprettymove.blogspot.com Lynda

So much for the “rout” predicted. T&T were my my pick for the Little Team That Could this World Cup, I knew they’d pull it off!

  • Ken

“Trinidad & Tobago, a team that has been written off more times than Mexico’s national debt..”

    hahahahahahahaahah

  • Rami

Absolutely amazing result for T&T. Would’ve never ever predicted it. This is what makes the world cup so special. I wish I was in Dortmund to party with the T&T fans right now.

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

Humble pie instead of cake walk for the Swedes.

  • Razzle

The best match of the tournament – amazing amazing match!!!

  • Andy

Wow what an amazing game. Hislop is the man of the match, no question. If he doesn’t show up to play, the Soca Warriors are blown out.

  • Laura

Univision just named Hislop MOTM – I think. Then the announcer showed us the viewers a red card. Even without knowing Spanish this is way better than ABC.

  • bidemi

You all can take your predictions about this World Cup and stick them up your you-know-where.

Excellent result for the Soca Warriors. You proved the world wrong. Congrats and enjoy your win.

Next up: Ivory Coast vs. Argentina

  • http://www.soccercommercials.com Chris C

Laura, you’re watching Univision for the two chicks with huge boobs in tiny outfits. Admit it!

  • http://www.viuasfotos.com/euler.htm Euler

    HISLOP!!!!!

    HISLOP!!!!!

    HISLOP!!!!!

These guys are real WARRIORS!!! Congratulations!!! What a pressure!!! Great result for the first-timers!!! Now I’m breathing again! Go T&T!!!

  • http://aprettymove.blogspot.com Lynda

Yeah, I don’t know Spanish either and I watched it on Univision–having the US announcers explain to me yesterday that soccer is a game played with your feet not your hands was the last straw.

  • bidemi

Either Chaka Hislop or Carlos Edwards should have been MOTM. This game proves that the gap is football is closing.

  • http://www.millioncapsules.com MillionCapsules

T&T’s 8-1-1 formation prove effective against the swede. If include goalkeeper, its 9-1-1. what will they come up with next? 10-0-1?
Its a pity Sweden didn’t capitalize on their gazillion chances. T&T’s keeper is on steriod.

  • Manal

totally worth ITTTTT!!!!! ahhh trinidad !!!! they never believed in you but i did !

  • http://www.viuasfotos.com/euler.htm Euler

T&T played with their hearts. Sweden played with their minds and muscle only. Bad game overall, but amazing result for T&T.

  • A_D

GREAT effort by T & T. This WC is really rocking

  • http://www.blogger.com/profile/22658393 Pavel

Ibrahimovic looked like he was trying to look good for the cameras the entire time, not score a goal. Sweden deserved not to win this one.

  • Razzle

@Euler: bad game?? It was a thriller!!

Yeah I also watch it on Univision instead of ESPN/ABC. The commentators are terrible – couldnt they get someone from the UK.

  • http://www.soccer-training-info.com/blog.asp John Webster

What a great result for T&T. A moving effort by their team – to fight with 10 players to the end. Sweden has some great chances but Shaka Hislop (the T&T keeper) made a few great saves. The final pass was just not there. Sweden fought but maybe tried too hard. Which often happens when your team is up a man. You think you have to up the tempo when really you should slow the game down and wear the other team out. Find the open man and that final cross. But easier said than down. Larson too, wasn’t his usually self, mis-hitting a long range shot when he was clear and dribbling into defenders. He wasn’t the simple classy player that he usually is for Barca. I loved how the coach from Trinidad (think he’s Dutch) saluted and cheered the fans after the final whistle blew. This is what the World Cup is about. A tiny country, in their first World Cup (I’m pretty sure), battles for a tie with just ten men.

Congrats to T&T team and fans. If anything, they were unlucky to be a man down in the 2nd half. Otherwise, I honestly believe they could have won the game.

Solid in defense, great purposeful, and efficient counterattack.

Sweden looked more dangerous in the first half. They had a few chances in the 2nd, too, but T&T’s goalkeeper was up to the task. But Sweden played with much less creativity in the 2nd half – I think they expected T&T to roll over and got frustrated when they did not.

  • http://ecuador.worldcupblog.org/ Trent

Awesome day for all Soca Warriors! A great result.

What an embarrassing result for the Swedes, though. Ouch.

Somebody’s gotta win Group B, right? I mean, not a single (intentional) goal yet in the Group.

  • http://arubagirl.typepad.com arubagirl

Oh wow, that was a GREAT match. I was rooting for T&T, and I’m so glad that they tied. Imagine what could have happened if they had eleven players.

    Leo, gefeliciteerd!

  • Akbar

Only Day 2 and the first upset (or semi-upset) has been done. What a start.

Congratulations to T & T they really dserved the draw: beautiful defending and Hislop was amazing in goal.

This will also teach all the bigots a lesson for underestimating these sincere, hardworking teams.

Hopefully Sweden will now move up a gear in their next two games under pressure, and provide us some amazing stuff (of which they are very capable) against Paraguay and of course England.

  • http://deleted Prophet

Thank Heaven for crossbars. Sweden were lucky to come away with a draw. Go T&T. Don’t get carried away though. Play the same committed defense against England and you are sure to hit them with goals on the counter. They are not half as good as Sweden.

  • Drabir Alam

Best game of the day. Did not expect it to be so in my wildest dreams. Great game.

    that’s Teamgeist y’all.

  • bidemi

This is actually the best 0-0 game I’ve seen.

  • Drabir Alam

Agreed on that. Most exciting game of the WC so far.

  • nandi

if there is heaven on earth it is there tonight in trinidad. there you shall find the party of a lifetime
    go soca warriors
you can play even with 10 warriors and we need no rat-tails

  • http://deleted Prophet

Substitute goalies often outdo themselves, something about being overlooked and having to prove yourself. Congrats to Hislop, and to the Warriors. The real talent is down here in the Caribbean, the guys just need the big stage to hone it on, more development opportunities. Football is about athleticism as much as strategy and execution. T&T just have to add the latter two. Go T&T.

  • Ceci

So, so, so proud of you all. Makes this Trini – in – exile’s heart glad.

  • spence

That was great game, but let’s not get too carried away. Sweden was dominating before and obviously after Avery went out. They had some bad luck, T&T had some good luck and if it wasn’t for Shaka, it would’ve been 3-0. Regardless, I was glad to see T&T come away with a draw.

  • Diane

To Paul from Taiwan…….I mistaked the white floating stuff for the ball once in a while! Horray for Hislop!! He’s the only reason it was a tie.

  • Deutschland über alles

    In Lennart Johansson we thrust

  • Laura

Oi Chris – the hot girls on Univision are what it’s all about!

  • http://Google maxinecaodogan@hotmail.com

The caribbean is one of the world best pleace for young man to learn to play football. The Trinidadian and Tobagian did it today. To let the world see that a small inland could play that well with a big country.

  • Secrets

    The stakes are high.
ALL Bets are on Sweden .

Go FIGURE when 3-4 world class swedie players just fumble the ball that way.

    Remember , MONEY moves matches.
A lot of ppl will be in debt for today ’s match.

When u see it and think abt it, it just made some sense for the results to be like that.

  • asdas

    A. John was horrible this match

  • Lainary

    Incredible game.

  • http://abidingintlaol.com John Miranda

I like both teams.. therefore, I’m happy with the draw

  • http://abidingintlaol.com Veronica Grant-Miranda

I’m jubilant about the results!!! They were both great!!!

  • Colin D

Gotta love it – 0-0 tie was by far the best match of the cup so far. Anyone selling T-N-T kit in Germany will make a killing this week – they’ll be the underdog darlings of the tourney.

This group is suddenly not looking very good – why couldn’t the U.S. have such a weak draw?

  • ronaldo

The African Team Cotes D’Ivoire by far is the best.

They have talents……lack of experience…..but they play Argentina well except that they make a few decisive errors.

  • Trini lady

Congratulations to the Soca Warriors! What an amazing moment for our beautiful twin islands! The entire country is celebrating like it’s Carnival in June!! Well done guys!

  • wandalynn

TRINIDAD GOOOO!!!! this was truly a great match fans got their monies wirth for this game! LOOKING FORWARD TO WHAT TRINIDAD WILL DO NEXT… both teams were impressive but for trinidads first it was great…..

  • RenLo

    MY POST MORTEM

As others have mentioned before me, the point dynamics have definitely been shaken up. All in all, poor Sweden finishing, brilliant Shaka saving and inspired TnT defending made this a great match. Everyone knows that anything could happen in The Beautiful Game. And the TnT warrior spirit helps!

Even when I trained with my school team, they told us that offence is the best defence and that could have worked for the Warriors on paper. But keep in mind that as their first match of the WC, a theoretically formidably opponent to play and a whole bunch o’ nerves, it does help to err on the side of caution.

I think Uncle Leo (as my friends and I call him here at home) made the right call with such a defensive formation. He has the results to prove it. And a lack of chances means nothing as to how potentially dangerous TnT could be in attack.

I KNOW TnT could be as equally attacking as the want to be – case in point: Glenn Cornell’s shot that hit the crossbar. Correct me if I’m wrong but wasn’t that the only shot on goal for either team to hit any part of the post?

As a rabid TnT fan, I debated if I should watch this match (I mean, I’m only 21 but sometimes it feels like my heart wants to pop!). In the end I’m glad I did. The only thing I wanted from the team was not to win (or just not to lose either) but to hold their own against the best teams in the world and give a skilful, worthy and most of all, zealous performance. And that, I’m proud to the point of tears to say, is exactly what I got.

    Vibes it up Soca Warriors!

P.S. I made no predictions for this match, and was never tempted to. To all the crack-pot fortune-teller wannabes out there – this match (of all matches) should show you that IMPOSSIBLE IS NOTHING!

P.P.S. Okay, I stole that from Adidas. Please don’t sue me.

    P.P.P.S. Some other comments:

What was Avery John thinking?! You have to be more careful than that! I’m watching you next match! Like a hawk!

I think in general American commentators are terrible (sorry guys). Thank goodness the local feed had that great British fella. Viva Commentata Britannia! As for them explaining that football is “a game played with your feet not your hands” (according to Lynda) – that’s just ridiculous. That’s why over 190 countries in the world call the game FOOTball. Just because it was decided to name their vamped up version of rugby American Football (that’s the thing that confuses me!) and hence association football is called soccer in the US (and a handful of other places) doesn’t mean that American citizens are stupid. The fact that these commentators are ignorant makes THEM look stupid. Big *steups* to them.

In Trinidad, today is like a Sunday, everybody was home, not a soul on the roads. Usually, a Saturday is like Shopper’s Day. I imagine almost any money made today was in liquor sales.

Tonight, there will most likely be drunken revelry everywhere, from the expensive sports bars to the neighbourhood pubs. In St. James alone, which probably has the highest pub-density per square km of any town in TnT, the Western Main road will effectively be shut down to vehicular traffic, being overrun by the sheer numbers of pedestrians. Smokey and Bunty, here I come!

I thought the cottonwood was snow flurries or something! I thought maybe El Nino had come back and it was an exceptionally cold winter in Germany. I had no idea it was over 30 C!!!

    *sigh!* The TnT kits are gorgeous! The best we’ve ever had! (Must…beg…for money…to buy…Yorke shirt…….So broke….so broke….)

The rat-tail has got to go. A Mohawk is great, dreadlocks are wicked, but the rat-tail is like the slimmed down version of a mullet.

When the match was over today, I cried tears of joy and wiped them with my TnT flag that I was waving (and I kept on blocking my father’s view of the tele). It was the same flag that I waved at the stadium for the home leg of TnT vs. Bahrain. I will never wash it.

  • Keyser

agree: i don’t remeber another 0-0 this goos. I celebrated the final whistle as I were a carribean.
    Well deserved!!
And to the guys @ WCB:another great job! you definitively won my loyaloty for the rest of the WC!
this group is suddenly getting very interesting!!

  • Claude

I got up at 6AM to watch England. What a boring game. Then at 8AM I went back to bed thinking T&T had no chance. Looks like I got everything backwards. Watched a boring match and missed a great one. Waaaaaah! Waaaaaaaah! Waaaaaaah!

  • pf

This was definitely a great game! Go T&T!

oh gosh i still cannot talk I screamed too much. Glen if dat shot did go in boy we would have vote you Prime Minister. Avery hard luck dred… and Shaka.. totally inspired. I am so proud to be a Trini right now.

  • Nirmala

From all of us here in Trinidad and tobago Thank you to everyone who showed support for us.
The ranked teams can be overrated and their popularity can overshadow the beauty of the sport -Football.
The team made the necessary improvments expected to play at this level and showed the world the dedication and passion of Trinidad and Tobago. It just goes to show that rankings and money and popularity does not decide a match.
Just enjoy the football. The guys of the Trinidad and Tobago Football team have already won by making it to the world cup.
Applause the people who demonstrate what football is. No matter what country they are from.

  • Vernelle

Shaka Hisslop and Carlos Edwards for MVP’s..

Sweden got stung by the sandfly at the WC…..Trinidad and Tobago. We are in Germany to sting everybody!!!!!Go Warriors!!! Suck it to them!!

  • Vernelle

I thank you Sweden and everyone else who underestimated us (T&T). As I heard someone call us “the underdog darlings” we are a force to be reckoned with in sportsmanship, talent, carnival, calypso, dancing (wining) and FOOTBALL!!!!

  • Kristen

Well done guys!! GREAT game!! Thanks for continuing to make us proud & representing us SO WELL!! We are behind u all the way!Keep it up!! • Hilton

yuh know when I listen the ‘idosity’ of the English commentator today how he was lambasting T&T as underdog etc yuh know ah had to get in a mad mad mad Machel way and wave mih flag here. You done know hot the euphoria came when we started to give dem de pressure.

What I enjoyed most is that we kept them at bay with just 10 soca warriors!!!

  • S.A.

funny how there are no comments from sweden…maybe they are too busy sucking it

  • Vernelle

WE REACH THE WORLD CUP STAGE!!!! WE WARMING UP!!!!

  • trinibabe2

They need to stop hating on T&T from the commentators to all these ‘individuals’ writing here on the screen. We have SKILLS and we don’t need to be faking our injuries to get the other team carded. And even though we didn’t have the commentators on our side with their idiotic ravings about ‘how upsetting it will be if T&T were to score a goal’ we still brought it and we stepped up to our plate so it’s time for y’all to stop being so small minded and be better sportsmen instead of unworthy opponents.

    Trini2debone!!!!! Go Soca Warriors!!!!!!!

  • Leanda

Great game today guys!! Hislop is d main man..good goin..can’t wait to see the next match! GO WARRIORS..SCORE SCORE SCORE DEM GOOOOALS!!!
