LiveBlog: Switzerland-South Korea
South Korea seemed to have some hard luck with the referee who awarded Switzerland’s second goal despite a flag from the Assistant Referee. But they still needed to score two goals in this game and they didn’t look the same side in the second half. Switzerland look very solid and deserved to go through to the second round after not conceding a goal.
Final: Switzerland 2-0 South Korea
Late Say: Extra replays show that the ball was played at by a South Korean and deflected the ball into Frei’s path. Correct call by the ref in the end and a fair result for Switzerland.
Full-time: Switzerland top their group without conceding a goal. They will face Ukraine in the Roud of 16. France finish second and get Spain as their reward. South Korea battled hard and looked good enough to go through, but in the end they fell short.
93:29 - Last chance for the Koreans, but passes are going astray. Swiss efficiency has taken care of Korean hustle.
90:58 - 4 minutes of injury time to be played. Korean crowd loud and forceful but their team has lost their way in midfield. Chun Soo has been blunt in the second half and their attack has degraded to pumping balls into the box. Half chances and weak shots have come their way, but nothing with real vemon.
89:41 - Foul by Djourou and he is booked. Replay shows it was another dive. Jae Jin Cho wins an Oscar for that performance.
88:38 - Anyone else think the Swiss coach looks like Jon Lithgow of ‘Footloose’ and ‘Third Rock from the Sun’ fame?
87:11 - Behrami comes on for Switzerland to replace Wicky. Time ticks away and Korea cannot get possession of the ball.
84:13 - Korea really running out of time. They were robbed by the ref but they still needed to score two goals in this game regardless. Swiss will top this group and play Ukraine if Korea cannot find answers in the final minutes. Korean fans still in good voice.
81:45 - Great chance for Korea after a goal mouth scramble. The ball is struck against a swiss player and the ball rises towards the roof of the net only for the keeper to tip it over. Great reflex save.
81:03 - Still no idea what exactly has happened with the goal. German commentary sheds no light an the replay clearly shows the linesman raising his flag for offside. The ref can over-rule the linesman, but why would he? The AR had the best view and it looked to be the correct call.
79:00 - Booking for ’star’ Chun Soo for a hack. He would miss the next game if Korea pulls this one out.
77:50 - The replay shows the linesman did actually raise his flag for offside. The ref has given the goal. Confusion reigns here.
76:32 - GGGOOOOAAAALLL!!! Frei finally bags one. Korea is livid with the no call from the linesman. Or rather, the linesman flagged but was ignored by the ref as he points to the centre circle for the goal.
75:10 - Chances for Korea have dried up. Lacking some creative play in midfield to release their front pairing. Switzerland should deal with long balls into the box all night.
72:11 - Switzerland able to excert some pressure from set pieces like corners. Some nice build up sees Margairaz release Frei with a square pass into the box. Frei cannot control and the chance is lost when he only had the keeper to beat if he could have hit it first time. Is he the best striker Switzerland have?
70:20 - Defensive move for the Swiss as they sub the hard-working and creative Yakin for Margairaz. Are Switzerland putting their stall out and inviting Korea to beat 9 at the back?
68:19 - Wicky booked for Switzerland after a studs up tackle. Seen ones like that let go for nothing more. Ref has been invisible otherwise though, which is a great sign for the game.
67:12 - Korea working hard for a goal as you would expect. Holes are opening for Switzerland but Frei’s wasteful shooting is letting his team down. Those fast break chances you get when your team is under siege are what break the back of your opponent.
65:06 - Subs for Korea. Chu Young Park replaced by Ki Hyeon Seol who plays for Wolves in England. Straight forward for forward switch. Korea has a couple of corners but no real danger for the Swiss goal - the second one headed high over the bar.
63:43 - Frei rifles a shot against the upright from the same angle as the one he skewed wide mere minutes earlier. Practice makes perfect. Maybe he’ll actually get a goal tonight.
61:58 - Jung Hwan Ahn on for Young Pyo Lee. Ahn plays in Germany which may excite the local fans in the crowd. If they could read this blog. If they cared.
60:18 - France have scored their second through Henry. Korea will be starting to feel the pressure. Still plenty of time in the game but they must score.
58:40 - Yakin does well to shed his marker at midfiled and releases the right sided wide player for the Swiss (P Degen?). The cross is excellent but there is no support in the middle making the same run. The ball runs harmlessly across the face of goal.
57:19 - Alex Frei spurns another decent chance by shooting well wide from about 16 yards. The angle was tight-ish, but you’d expect him to at least hit the target from there. Nice buildup play to release him.
55:25 - Korea will not go through if the scores stay the same at full time. They have to throw bodies forward to get the equalizer and hope France does not score a second goal against Togo.
53:46 - Cries of handball by Korea as they mounted an attack on the Swiss box. No replays yet to show whether they have a claim or not. France have taken the lead through Vieira in the other game.
52:10 - Djourou replaces Senderos. Blow for the Swiss defence who will surely be weaker without his quality (and hard-headedness).
50:35 - Senderos leaves the fil again but it looks like an arm injury this time. Switzerland down to 10 men for the moment. Replay shows nothing conclusive.
47:50 - Korea pressing well and Switzerland struggling to clear further than their own defensive third. All players back for the Swiss.
45:39 - First shot of the half to Korea. #17 Ho shoots high and wide from the corner of the 18 yard box.
45:01 - Second half underway. Korea #4 Jin Cheul has dispatched the Wound Condom in favour of a single bandage around his head. The wound was continuing to bleed towards the end of the half, but I’m sure they have it patched up now, maybe a stitch or two.
Half-time Highlights: Togo holding France out in the other game. If it stays like this Korea is OK with the current score. Of course, you figure they will not give up on the result of this game. And you have to think with all the chances France is having, they will eventually score at least one on Togo. Regardless of the France result, Korea will no doubt want to finish first in the group to avoid facing Spain in the Round of 16. Switzerland has the same motivation, or course, which means we should see some more goals, or at least some attacking play, in the second half.
Half-time: Surprisingly open game. Solid chances for both teams, the Swiss just shading it with a great header from Arsenal’s Senderos. Korea has looked good enough to get an equalizer and sitting back on their lead sounds like the worst thing the Swiss can do.
47:03 - Alex Frei has a golden opportunity to double the lead with a free header in the 6 yard box. He gets touch but it slides well wide. Any sort of solid touch and he scores. Korea asleep on defence there.
45:00 - Chances coming thick and fast for Korea now. The Swiss are battening down the hatches trying to make it to half time with their slender lead. Senderos has had to briefly leave the field to stop the bleeding from the cut on the bridge of his nose. Guess they don’t make a stocking cap for that location.
44:10 - Another claim for a penalty after Philpp Degen rugby tackles a Korean player to the ground. Missed completely by the referee.
42:18 - From the corner Korea have a legitimate case for a penalty when the ball hits Mueller in the chest where he had his arm against his body. I guess you could say he wasn’t playing at it with his arm, but he played at it with his chest that had his arm across it.
41:02 - Barnetta gifts the ball to Chun Soo on the edge of the Swiss area and his shot is well struck but saved by the diving Zuberbuehler.
40:15 - Swiss crowd making themselves heard now. Wouldn’t it be cool if they had a yodelling chant? Just to reinforce some stereotypes.
38:55 - Yakin dispossesses the Korean defender on the sideline. His cross is half-cleared back to him but his volley goes well wide. nice chance created out of nothing from Yakin who is working hard tonight.
36:41 - Jinkyu goes into the ref’s book for a tackle from behind. From the resulting free kick from Yakin, the Korea keeper saves easily enough though it was nicely struck towards the corner the wall was protecting.
34:31 - Jaejin clashes heads with Degen and needs a stretcher to come off. Eventually he gets to his feet, but it looks like he just fell awkwardly on his rump. Seen a bit of that this World Cup.
33:30 - Free kick for the Swiss on the right wing. Vicious cross bending into the box. All it needed was the slightest touch but the keeper was first to it.
31:26 - Swiss looking like they have the more controlled possession. Korea not out of it by any means, but the Swiss are controlling the pace much better forcing Korea to play on the break. But that probably suits their style better anyway.
29:30 - Teams back to full strength. Some great action to liven this game up. Anyone know if the vests the Korean players wear under their jerseys are supposed to have any particular benefit?
26:52 - Both teams playing down a man as they get patched up. The Korean player has a wound condom on his head. He now rivals Chun Soo for a noticeable dome. He looks like a chicken leg with a paper crown. Senderos just has a small butterfly bandage.
25:25 - Frei is found free on the edge of the area but his shot bends wide and stays that way.
24:20 - Senderos won the duel in the air from a Swiss free kick and powerfully headed home. His follow through caught the Korean defender full in the face. Neither player went down clutching their faces in a rare show of hardiness. Great to see. This should open this game up even more.
22:45 - GGGGOOOOAAAAALLLLLL! Bloody nice goal by Senderos. Korean and Swiss player clash heads in mid air and both players are bleeding from head wounds.
19:45 - What do you think about ’star’ players doing things like Chun Soo Lee and colouring their hair to stand out from their teammates? Is it their own flair or are they doing it to get noticed by large clubs? I could not pick out a Korean player from a distance, but you remember the guy with the hair. Is that in the true spirit of team?
16:30 - Alex Frei hits a looping volley that does not trouble the keeper. Chances are starting to come in this game more. Swiss gaining confidence. Let’s hope for a goal soon to really open it up.
14:09 - In the other game, France almost take the lead but called for offside. This game will not be effected by the France result unless France scores a ton. As long as both teams come away with a point.
12:26 - Shot from distance by Korea. Hits the Swiss defender before reaching the 18 yard box.
09:10 - Great chance for the Swiss. Wide open down the middle and the Swiss striker Barnetta. His shot was hit into the legs of the desparate sliding tackle of the defense.
07:50 - Chances at both ends, both comfortably handled by the keepers. Will be interesting to see how the Swiss adapt to the non-stop running style of the Koreans. It certainly baffled the Italians (regardless of who you think should have won that game in 2002).
06:06 - Nice flop by the Korean defender to ease the danger. I’ve nothing against the ref calling fouls, I just hate the way players embellish every contact to make sure the ref sees it. Really detracts from the game, for purists as well as to a wider audience.
04:26 - Swiss have settled after the early scare. Frei gets a shove to the deck after the ball has already gone out for a throw. The ref has words but no more.
02:45 - Great chance for Korea. Nice run into the box by Lee, the white haired god. He laid the ball across the goal mouth but there was no support for the tap-in.
1:09 - Early foul against Sth Korea for a studs up tackle. Swiss with a chance to pump it into the box. Korea deals with it well.
00:01 - We’re off. Let’s see some more goals than the earlier games of the day. A draw will probably be enough for these two teams to progress, but if France racks up a cricket score against Togo it will certainly make things interesting.
Natonal Anthems: Swiss anthem very pleasant to listen to. Almost neutral. Sorry, that was the last joke like that, I promise. Swiss in red, Korea in white. Is it claustrophobic underneath those huge flags in the crowd?
Pregame: What is your prediction?
Few minutes more before kick-off in this Group G decider. Players are in the tunnel and the crowd is in fine voice. Lots of fans for both teams.

Here are some facts that I hope you guys can all see….See this and I’m sure you guys will know that the Switzerland vs. Korean game was unfair!!!!!
Referee Horacio
-He was a Switzerland player
FIFA President
-Mr. Blatter (from Switzerland)
FREI’s goal
-That second goal shouldn’t have been a called a goal.
-The 2nd ref raised his flag..the ref’s make the call! But Horacio argued back and called it a goal
-SHOULD A TEAM BE PENALIZED FOR AN ARGUEMENT MADE BY THE REFEREES!!!!! IF THEY HAD NOT EVEN RAISED THEIR FLAGS THEN THAT BALL WOULD NOT HAVE SCORED!!! THIS IS NOT FAIR!!!!!!!!!!!!
Guys, let’s go to the FIFA WEBSITE and click on the left column “site feedback” and voice your opinion!
Congrats to Swiss, HOWEVER, THIS WAS AN UNFAIR GAME!!!

Frei’s goal is an easy story:
Margairaz wants to pass the ball to Barnetta on his right. A Korean defender tries to intercept the ball and makes an unfortunate, but beautiful pass to Frei who scores brilliantly.
You want proof the goal was fair: read the rules of the game.
A player in an offside position is only penalised if, at the moment the ball touches or is played by one of his team, he is, in the opinion of the referee, involved in active play by:
- interfering with play or
- interfering with an opponent or
- gaining an advantage by being in that position.
Taken from FIFA’s website.
Please notice the words “one of his team”.
The linesman didn’t see it was a Korean which made the final pass to Frei and therefore rose his flag. The main referee saw what really happened and let the game run as normal.
Now if you don’t understand that this is how football is played and rules, I suggest once again you all go to an actual stadium to watch a game instead of being once every 4 years in the middle of 200′000 fanatics in front of a big screen.

yeah I agree with you about what had happened.
But who is going to be responsible for the assistanse ref.’s misjudgement?
He stopped Korean defenders by putting up the flag making them believe that it was offside.
Whether it was an offside or not, the game should have stopped than to make it fair. Unless the assistance ref. purposely putted up the flag to confuse koreans to let Switzerland win.

Now the whole world can observe the Koreans’ real character through their posts here. (And don’t try to pretend that you’re not Korean because we know that you’re lying.) What immature, racist, CRYBABY losers you are!!!
When the game went your way, you preferred to look the other way,
But now that the call has caused your fall,
You cry and cry “foul call, foul call!”
What poor sportmen you are. Why don’t you get a life, you sore losers? After all, it’s just a game.

http://www.petitiononline.com/mod_perl/signed.cgi?wc06pet&1
go there and sign to protest against the numerous unfair calls made by the ref in the korea swiss game. everything’s more elaborately explained in the site. just go and sign and pass it on to people so that some drastic damage can be done to the ref and to fifa’s board for letting this pass. if we can pass it quicker, a rematch can be a possibility.
you might not care for the sport or the korean team but please sign. this fight is to fight against the unjust and injustifiable treatment given from the ref to the korean team throughout the game.

Today.
Ukraine VS. Swiss.
I took an objective view,
even Though I’m a Corean.
Switzerland couldn’t win without Support of the Chief Umpire.
. . . and what was worth,
their extraordinary “Handling Art” was no help at all.
+
Anyway,
You did a good job, swiss.
I mean it.

Both Swiss and Korea played well. It’s sad that the ref killed the game with the second goal because after that korean motivation has fall appart and it’s understandable.
Finally Korean can be proud of his team, they played a great football.
However for the Korean fan who express themselves here, be like most of korean : be fair and don’t discredit yourself by insult or hysteria. Don’t do what “supporter” do in France, Portugal, Italia, England etc.
Anyone know the Ref decision was bad, you know it in your heart. So just be fair and express yourself with calm. As this anyone will remember that Korean are great people and that luck and ref was against them, but agressive reaction will change those though and people will only think you are narrow minded, not fair and will not remember the reason.
Just for the story, when I saw France-Korea on giant screen in a stadium in paris, Korean was supporting their team between them, good ambiance… until french agitator annoy them sometimes insulting them. (I’m sad to be french when I saw guys like them). During Swiss-Korea, I saw it in the korean embassy and it was a good ambiance even after the game. Because korean, even disappointed, as applaused. This is the korean’s spirit (and of course at the subway near the embassy right after the game some french made fun of koreans, this, is the basic stupid french supporter’s spirit)
So one more time this was a good match between balanced team but luck and ref have make the decision. Anyway people who saw this game know that Korea play a great Football. Lee Won-jae was amazing on this game and other players have do their job. The Red devils was also great, it’s not like french supporter… A week ago we taked about France and their 2 point (before France-Togo) as a poor team and we blamed it. And today, they win against Spain and they remain the National Hero… At least Korea are proud of their team anyway, not just when it arrange them.
So Korea is not qualified to 1/8, but anyway they can be proud. I hope in 4 year they will improve their skill again and proof that they are a great nation, because they really are.
Forza Corea !
Allez les bleus ! (hey, I’m french after all…)

Well.. as for me Korea is still the best soccer player i’ve known. The red devil are the best supporters i’ve ever seen. Truly, let’s just forget this behind.it’s over..but the fighting spirit will never over.
Korea will be back !!

First of all, people shouldnt be making judgements about a certain nation because of some soccer game.
Second, the call made by the ref was completely based on his own train of thought. His call is not at all backed by FIFA rules and regulations.
Here’s a quote, “According to the FIFA regulations, deflections DO NOT count as possession.” ANd if you think about it, if deflections WERE considered possesion, wouldn’t shots that are deflected off a defender be considered an own goal? no. therefore that rule was made up by that faulty ref.
Last, there is no WAY korea could have gathered the fire or the passion to come back and win that game after such blasphemous calls made by the ref.
Anyway, people who make racial remarks, especially Korean people who make racial remarks because of this issue, are a disgrace. It doesn’t help our korean image either.

“FIFA regulation states deflections don’t count as possession, ergo the pass was clearly offside.” This was found on Wikipedia online, and the rules are clear on the FIFA website.
Although the ref has the final say over the assistant refs, experienced players STOP playing once the flag is raised, noting that the ball is no longer in play.
At this time, when the ball was CONSIDERED to not even be in play, Frei attempts a goal. He makes it, naturally, because NOBODY ELSE IS PLAYING. Even he himself, along with the rest of the Swiss team thought the goal didn’t count. Only when the main ref declared it as a goal were they jumping around and celebrating. To count this as a goal is not much different from Frei playing alone with nobody else on the field. The commentators in the US also added that the goal was definitely offside.
Twice during the game, there was handling of the ball in the penalty area by the Swiss during Korea’s corner kicks. No call by the ref whatsoever. Is it even necessary to point out that it was unfair?
After that invalid second goal which was somehow considered to be a goal by the main ref, the one person’s opinion that mattered, the Koreans had no will to play. Who would? Many people, including myself, believe that Korea had a chance to tie the game with the Swiss had it not been for 2nd thing that can’t even be soundly called a goal. With a tie, Korea would have been able to advance to the next round. Needless to say, this is just speculation, we can never know if they would have tied. However, it can’t be argued that Korea completely lost their fire after the unfair call, which affected the entire outcome of the game. There almost always seems to be some sort of bias and favoritism from the ref, and that is expected. But this seems to have surpassed all known and acceptable forms of bias.
I’m not saying that Korea would have won the World Cup. I’m not saying that had Korea tied with Swiss and moved up instead of France, we would have beat Spain. But in the name of justice and fairness, that second “goal” was indeed not a goal. The Swiss fairly scored the first goal, there is no problem with that. If Korea advanced to play Spain and ended up losing, FINE. At least it was fair. It is simply the concept of fairness, and the lack of it in the Korea-Swiss game that the fans are aching over.

They are not even qualified for U20. Just go back to your moutainous place and learn how to make PK in snow. THat will help ya.
And fire that Fuxkin Ref. from Argentina. You are most shameful person next to Mr. Godhand.

I can’t believe what i saw. the swiss scored a goal that might have been an offside. To be fair I don’t think that was an offside. Because of this swiss’ ranking is 13 and Korea 56. I think we could have made a miracle. I saw two handball which could have been two penalties. I hope that referee will never come back

hm
i thought the korean soccer team was playing against the swiss soccer team, not handball team.
and i thought the 11 korean soccer players were playing against 11 swiss soccer players, not 12.

First off,,, Swiss are assholes,,, bastards… u know u guys didnt win fairly… and u consider ur self a winner.. what a pitiful thing to think about,, everybody knows that u cheated… everybody knows the games between Swiss and SOuth korea was a tough luck korea game. The ref if i see you one day,, without hestitation i will fukken kick your balls until it pops.. step on them kick them…. u better watch out.. whereever u are,,, U better pray to yourself not to meet me or my friends… Cuz we will kill you….

The FIFA president should fukken get fired,, hes a swiss person isnt he… ugh u ppl disgust me!!! damm u SWiss people… DAmmm u!!!! CAn we play a fair game dam!!

Hey you,,, pisss person.. u call that a damm rule…okay we’ll consider it as a goal..,,yea… not to mention other times you freaking piss ppl cheated i mean the ref who happans to be a swiss i mean piss person…. What about the time when u touched the play in the 1st round of the game,, and there was no penalty,, oh and what aobvut the time u pushed one of the kroean players while playing,, watch the fukken game again,,, closey instead of going to the atual game when you are all the way at the back.. asshole… Just beacuse you know it was unfair,,, dont try to cover it up by saying shit,, dam it,,, admit it you are cheaters,, not to mention the ref is s swiss person not to mention he let the swiss ppl slide when they cheated how many times during the game.. fukken watch it again bastars… u think you could get away with this huh,, watch ten yrs later somehow the truth will be known whether the ref got brined or did it for his counrty,, ur counry wil be ashamed and will never play in the WORLDCUP again,, why cuz the swiss presdent of FIFA could get fired….

To all those Koreans who feel cheated due to the Swiss-Korea World Cup Game, just let me say that Karma works every time. A lot of you Koreans feel cheated, because you felt that Korea should’ve gone further in the World Cup due to their strong performance in 2002. Well, in reality, Korea just demonstrated what their football is truly made of, because the victories gained in the 2002 World Cup came about through cheating!!! The whole world saw how unbelievably poor the refereeing was in the Italy and Spain matches in 2002. Everyone recognized that foul play occurred when horrible calls were made except for Koreans!! What about the offside call made against the Spaniard when the ball was obviously inbounds and the legitimate goal that was also annuled!? huh?? Lastly, who won the 2006 World Cup? It is truly suspicious that Korea (being the host in 2002), would’ve fairly beat a team of the quality of Italy, who had already won 3 previous World Cups. Also, how convenient was it for ‘Hyundai’ to be the sponsor of the 2002 World Cup. I wonder if some of that big corporate money had to do with the bad decisions that were made. Me and all my friends; including a girl from Taiwan, feel that the 2002 World Cup was the most fraudulent in the history of the World Cup. If the Swiss player intercepted a bad pass from the Korean player and scored a goal, then the ball was still in fair play. Second: Koreans don’t know how to celebrate football and don’t have a passion for the game as other nations have had for decades. I was stationed in Korea as a soldier in 2000, and mostly noticed a passive attitude from the public at large when it came to football. In fact, it seemed that most people gave just as much attention if not more to baseball. That’s right. To ‘Henry’ and I’m ‘Korean:’ In Football the man who makes the calls is called the Referee not Umpire! Besides, what kind of football fans wave foam arms as if it were baseball? Football should be celebrated like Football not like Baseball. When it comes to World Cup Football, the real cheater is Korea.

Look, I live in Korea and i went to the World Cup Stadium in Seoul to cheer for Korea among 60,000 people at 4am, but pleaseeee… the referee in Switzerland vs. Korea was FAIR!! it’s absolute garbage to blame the result on the referee, when Korea didn’t even have one decent chance to score, and they had to score two times.. the second Swiss goal was 100% valid, if you know anything about football and are not blinded by nationalism you will agree.. the ball was played by a Korean defender to the Swiss striker, the referee cannot call offside on that.. the linesman did his job to show the offside position, but the referee decided correctly that since a Korean defender played the ball to the striker, the offside position is cancelled..
Come on Korea, accept the fact and let’s put a better team together for the next World Cup.. I’ll be there to cheer the Korean team on.
