LiveBlog: Serbia and Montenegro-Netherlands

Netherlands 1-0 Serbia & Montenegro
Solid result from the Dutch and a much needed win first up. Arjen Robben shined but apart from the goal there was not much to cheer for the Oranje. Serbia & Montenegro had one lapse in defense and paid the price for some unadventurous attack play. Thanks for all the comments on this LiveBlog and see you next time.

Full-Time: Dutch win on Robben’s 18 minute strike. Good result for them, but far from a convincing display. Was it good, stifling defense by the Fearsome Foursome or a lack of ideas from the Dutch. I don’t see the Plavi doing much in this tournament if they aren’t willing to attack with any real purpose and the Dutch will have to find a way to score more than a single goal.

The most important stat of the day: Sepp Sightings 2 d. Beckanbauer Sightings 1

92:35 – Saw a close up of Gavrancic and I reckon he’s a starter for the World Cup Ugly Eleven.

91:26 – Last chance for the Dutch to break out of defense. It doesn’t happen.

89:30 – Robben earns Gavrancic a yellow card by going down like a sack of spuds at the slightest contact. Let’s hope the Dutch don’t score from this.

88:45 – Nice one-two play on the edge of the 18 yard box makes me a liar again. S&M creating a chance.

87:40 – The Dutch are hanging on but S&M not giving much cause for concern. The only thing that will beat the Dutch defense today is the Dutch defense.

85:40 – Mathijsen off for Boulahrouz who plays for Hamburger in Germany. You think he’d play for money like everyone else, but what can you say, the man likes his beef.

84:13 – Heitinga yellow carded for time-wasting. Good on the referee for catching that. I don’t think Heitinga meant it, but you gotta get the ball in play.

82:43 – Van der Sar flopping all over the place with cramps. Dutch players going handbags at dawn with the S&M player who did nothing wrong.

81:33 – van Persie stands over the free kick. Crowd expecting greatness. Nice free kick! all it needed was the slightest touch from Dutch or S&M body in the 6 yard box and it was a goal.

80:10 – Second sighting of Big Sepp in the crowd. He must be happy there’s another nation joing the FIFA family once Montenegro completes their separation from Serbia. Happy day for Sepp.

79:10 – Free kick for the Dutch goes high and wide. Much like the expectations for this Dutch team after this performance. But who wants to peak too early?

76:44 – Mood in the WCB HQ is starting to sway in S&M’s favour. We want a goal and the Dutch don’t look like they really want to score another. Then Robben pops up and makes a liar out of me. He’s on the bench for my men’s league team now.

74:30 – Some sustained Dutch pressure that goes nowhere until Robben makes a nice little run down the left gets the Dutch crowd on their feet and making some more noise. Then things settle back to the odd whislle and air horn. Where do you buy and air horn and do you ever use it anywhere else than the weekend?

70:50 – Some life from S&M. Nice low shot from someone with a name ending in ‘ic’. Van der Sar saves well but the ball pops out. No second chance and now Edwin needs a break since he’s worked so hard today. It’s hot out there in the sun.

68:44 – Ruud van Nistelrooy comes off. The wonderfully named Dirk Kuyt comes on. Doesnt he sound like a character from a Clive Cussler novel? Maybe Dirk could be played by Matthew McConnahey.

68:00 – Game being fought out in the middle of the pitch. Not much action at either end. The last pass before something exciting happens is just missing for both teams.

65:43 – Great tackling by S&M in the middle of the park earns them a free kick after the foul on Krstajic. S&M uses the break in play to sub Kezman who has worked hard for not much result. Ljuboja takes his place.

63:30 – Calls for hand-ball in the Dutch 18 yard box. Replay shows that the arm was not involved. Good call. S&M have a free kick on the edge of the area, but Stankovic stinks it up with his shot well over the bar.

62:48 – Netherlands called offside in their latest attack. They are creating but it does not seem as patient as teams of years past. They seem to be lacking the holding player who can direct play.

60:55 – van Horse-telrooy nearly scores by living in the GK’s pocket. He’s the master at popping up in the 6 yard box and nipping goals.

59:21 – van Bommel coming off to make way for Landzaat for the Dutch.

58:53 – S&M attacking around the Dutch 18 yard box but don’t seem to have any cohesive ideas. Kicks over the head rarely look good unless you’re Thierry Henry.

57:20 – Referee going through a bad spell of popularity with Dutch fans. They’re making the most noise here today. What does a ticket o the train cost from S&M to Germany?

55:40 – Gio gets a booking after a foul at midfield. Looked a little harsh for what amounted to a push in the back. S&M free kick comes to nothing.

54:10 – Wesley Snipes plays a tricky little chip into the area and Robben falls all over himself trying to connect with it. Nice variation when everyone was expecting a blast.

53:35 – Dutch free kick in the right range. Who will take it?

51:10 – Question for the minute: Does Giovanni really want to be Brazilian when he puts ‘Gio’ on the back of his Barcelona jersey? Did van Basten tell him no?

48:40 – Hard to see in the dark but a back pass to Van der Sar nearly chipped him. That would have been a much more exciting own goal than England’s. Can someone turn the lights on at the far side of the field?

47:44 – S&M attacking nicely down the left. All it takes is the right service and this game is even.

45:01 – Second half underway. You don’t get the feeling that this game will end 1-0. My hopes is that it’s S&M so that we have a game of it. Van der Sar picked up a scuffed clearance and S&M appeal for a back pass. Right decision by the referee.

Half-time: Lots of talk in the comments this game about S&M splitting up after this tournament. At my last count they have one Montenegran (Montenegrite?) on the squad. I never thought it was fair that it was two teams against one anyway. No wonder T&T did so well yesterday. Either way it looks like it might be awhile before we see Montenegro qualify for a major tournament again. Personally I’m sad cos I won’t be able to write S&M for purely innocent reasons ever again.

Half-time: Phew! What a first half. Most of the action happening in the WCB HQ with technical difficulties keeping us out of the game for 19 minutes. Missed the goal from Robben but by all accounts a cracker for the young man. Thanks for your patience and let’s hope the second half is just as lively on the pitch.

46:34 – Shot from S&M and the German commentator is roused out of his nap. Nice pace on the ball from Djordjevic but just wide. Last action of the half and it’s time to hit the fridge for more beer.

43:14 – Ognjen Koroman comes on as a substitute for Djordevic. Hard to see if that’s a tactical decision of if Djordevic is hurt.

42:35 – As the first half winds down to a close, haven’t had much reason to mention S&M. Holland dominating possession without really creating many clear-cut chances. Comfortably in control but not inspiring. Still, at least it’s not England v Paraguay, right?

38:22 – Robben is involved in everything. Unlucky to be called offside. He’s only about 24 but looks 40. London life at Chelsea must be aging him. Perhaps he can come play for my men’s league team. We have much more fun.

36:33 – Robben has a nice little run and decent shot. Van Horsetelrooy might have got a touch to direct it goalwards but just missed.

33:40 – Dutch not quite playing Total Football, but this young team has wheels. Robben looking like a Total Footballer in his all Oranje outfit.

33:25 – Two players fall over in the darkness. Your guess is as good as mine who that is.

32:40 – Van Basten using the Magic Sponge. Let’s hope it’s not a serious injury to the great player.

31: 03 – First sighting of Big Sepp at the World Cup. Nice to see him getting buddy-budy with the Kaiser. Anyone else curious just how Beckanbauer is getting to so many games so fast? My theory is cloning.

29:45 – Kezman with a diving header that just flashes wide. S&M asserting themselves more, especially from set pieces. Shadow on the field makes it tough to see the play on the far side of the field. Either that or the beer I’ve drunk is clouding my vision.

27:55 – Hearing the Dutch fans making some noise now. What a fantastic atmosphere it must be in Leipzig. S&M captain Milosevic making a nice run into the box but the header goes well high.

26:27 – Nice free kick from S&M from right in front. The replay shows the Dutch player breaking out of the wall way too early and blocking the shot.

25:03 – S&M pumping long balls into the box. The Dutch defending like you would expect the tallest people in Europe to. Weslel Snipes has a shot at the other end that goes wide.

23:25 – Not seeing much from S&M so far. Dutch still in control. Let’s hope the game stays open with the Dutch looking for more goals.

22:22 – Ruud the Horse is penalized for being a donkey in the tackle.

21:00 – Dutch looking in control. Robben the goalscorer with a scorching shot, well saved. Robben came to play today.

19:11 – Cable back in business but we missed the Dutch goal by about a minute. Back online and looking to liveblog the rest.

1:00 – Game has kicked off. Can’t see it, but imagine the colours of the crowd are wonderful. 22 players are running around the field after a small white ball. Scintillating stuff. World Cup Blog Bob is down at the Berlin Fan Fest snapping some pix of both team supporters.

Game Time: A few technical issues here at WCB HQ in Berlin. Our cable has gone kaput a few minutes before kick-off. All those watching out there, feel free to let us know what’s happeneing in the game and I’ll move it up into the LiveBlog until we get ourselves sorted.

Looking forward to this match. This group promises to be one of the most exciting of the tournament. Let’s get a few things straight right from the get-go. My spelling sucks, I’ll make mistakes. Some of the players’ names from both teams (Vennegoor of Hesselink! Dragutinovic!) are long and difficult to spell. I’ll probably make fun of a few in there while I’m at it. Hopefully it’ll be mildly humourous. If you find it offensive, you know where to leave comments to tell me :)

Pregame: It is a hot day in Leipzig. Both teams are eager to start off their World Cup campaigns with a win.

The win last night by Argentina over the Ivory Coast makes this so-called Group of Death even tougher for these two teams today. A loss puts you behind the eight ball and both of those teams will really make you work for a win.

  • Keyser

let’s see how fit are the last two teams of the ‘group of the death’. Argentina looked ruthless, and CIV seemed a very serious side despite the loss. I don’t think anything will be decided before the last round.
    I can’t wait!

  • http://thedailyheader.blogspot.com/ SmellRat

Zidane says the world is coming to an end! Has he lost it? Weird article. Holland meanwhile is going to break down the S&M D.

  • Ali Siddiqui

    Man I can’t watch this game…too tired…haven’t slept. Can’t believe i missed the T&T game :(

  • BrendanLee

Ned will be tested here with their young pretenders against a strong side..,to make this match much more important to both side by the result obtain by the Argentinians.A win will be needed….,my guess,
    orange is the colour today!

  • Zantheman

I think this one will end up 1-1. Great offense vs. great defense (should be good). I hope Zigic gets some action, his height could be a factor in a close game. Looking forward to this one.

  • Kiko

Im not sure that the link works, but its worth a try if you want to watch the match online.
    http://lido.atspace.com/is.html

  • Ali Siddiqui

The hot weather may cause this to be a slow and sweaty game. It may affect all of the players perfomances much like how England was suffering from the heat.

  • http://ecuador.worldcupblog.org/ Trent

Good luck, Chris. Should be a good match!

  • Roland

Holland along with Spain is my sleeper pick of this tournament. This should be a physical, close match to the very end. I look for Dutch “total futbol” to ultimately revive itself and carry them over Serbia 3 – 1 with a late score to clinch it.

  • Ali Siddiqui

I’m predicting 1-1 tie or after careful consideration of Netherlands players…2-1 for the Vikings. :D

  • Ali Siddiqui

    Oh crumbs! Cable problems! O_o

  • Keyser

NL with the ball, looking for spaces.
I think it will be like this all the game.

  • http://tsoya.blogspot.com/2006/06/world-cup-news.html j
  • Lyle

This is going going to be a really slow, but techinal game. Good luck trying to score Oranje.

  • Roland

As expected, S-M looks organized in defense, but the Netherlands are controlling the tempo so far.

  • Ali Siddiqui

Keyser are you watching the game?

  • Lyle

    Kezman’s arm tattoos are awesome.

  • Ali Siddiqui

Ok, it’s offical! Roland and Keyser you’re up for leading the commentaries! :P

  • Keyser

is clear that SM will rely in its good defense (only 1 goal allowed in all the qualy) and try to surprise with a counter attack.
now they have a nice free kick (idem england and arg yesterday

  • Keyser

    nothing! 10 min, 0-0
    no clear goal situations yet

  • Ali Siddiqui

    Bless your heat Keyser!

  • Roland

What the hell is Holland doing passing like that? With their weapons they should be attacking the penalty box.

  • Ali Siddiqui

*Heart I mean Heart! Lack of sleep is catching up!

  • Keyser

some dutchs are even wearing orange shoues. i like those.
NL should not loose it’s patience, and persevere with the ball down.

  • Ali Siddiqui

Maybe Holland is just testing the waters around S&M to see how the defense is?

  • Keyser

13′: SM had a nice one. almost a goal!
their counter attack can be dangerous!

  • Keyser

13′: SM had a nice one. almost a goal!
their counter attack can be dangerous!

  • That SM counterattack was killer. I’d hate to think that they didn’t score because their two strikers got mangled with each other.

  • Keyser

2nd missed chance for SM. they’re having more the ball now, and the match is more even now

  • Roland

The Dutch better watch that counterattack, because if the Serbs get up on them they’re going to tighten up even further and this game is going to grind on like an old Yugo engine.

  • Roland

    GOOOOLLLLLLLL!!!!!

  • Ali Siddiqui

    GOAL?!!? WHO!?! O_o

  • http://ecuador.worldcupblog.org/ Trent

    17:00 GOOOOAAAAL Robben! 1-0

  • http://www.iberianborderhup.blogspot.com Kyle

Nice counter attack goal by Robben.

  • Keyser

    GOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAALLLLLLL NL!!!!!!!!
A lone run by robben!!!! amazing definition!

  • 17:00 GOOOAL by the orange team. Very fast counter attack by Robben (11). NED 1-0 SM

  • Ali Siddiqui

    Netherlands draws first blood!

  • http://ecuador.worldcupblog.org/ Trent

    S&M missing Vidic, methinks.

  • Keyser

1 minute before they had a very similar play aborted by an off side. is SM also playing ‘linha burra’?

  • Roland

Great finish. Now I just need an insurance goal, then a counter-attack score by S-M, then the final winning score for Holland to make this go the way I pictured it last night…

  • Ali Siddiqui

    I’m thinking 2-1 Holland.

  • Keyser

the stadium is an orange party. and no SM will have to get out and look to the opposite goal. let’s see how the are at it.

  • http://ecuador.worldcupblog.org/ Trent

Great strike from RObben. He’s on a mission today.

  • Roland

    So close to goal #2!

  • Keyser

a NL missile from 30 meters!! what a save from the GK!

  • 21:50 That ball was pretty twisted. Looked like SM’s keeper defended it with his elbow.

  • Keyser

SM is going forward with more guts that ideas. and now is NL who can damage counterattacking. (does this word exists in english?)

  • James

robben is off to a pretty good start.

  • http://ecuador.worldcupblog.org/ Trent

    Yes, Keyser. :)

  • Dino

Hello everyone from Mobile Alabama USA

  • Ali Siddiqui

Keyser if you mean CounterAttacking then yes. It exists! :p

  • http://www.pierretristam.com Candide’s Notebooks

3-2 Netherlands! (Anyway, that’s my prediction). Lousy first 10 minutes, wonderful since. But that’s not the whole story. Soccer-as-a-second-language?

  • Roland

That score has really taken Serbia out of their game. Their line discipline is breaking down and they’re looking increasingly disorganized.

  • Keyser

glad to see the cable is back on place. you definitively have more stile than me on blogging!

  • Ali Siddiqui

I would like to thank Keyser for keeping us up to date as well as Roland! :D

  • Ali Siddiqui

It looks like S&M are running out of steam and initiative?

  • Keyser

SM has more ideas on how to attack than paraguay or poland, but still it’s clear that is not their strongest point.

  • Dino

cmon S&M I have a perfect record on my pred. so far!!!

  • Ali Siddiqui

Comparing SM to Paraguay and Poland really makes it easier to understand what’s going on now. I think as the 2nd quarter draws near that we’ll see SM start pressuring Holland.

  • Dino

    LOL good one Chris

  • Roland

Dino has been very accurate so far. What was your call for this game, anyway?

  • Ali Siddiqui

I think the stadiums with the natural lighting are a detremint to this game. :( To many shadows from what I’m reading.

  • Keyser

    that was close!!!!

  • Roland

    Robbed by the post!!!

  • Dino

    Is HOlland in orange?

  • Ali Siddiqui

    Who just shot and missed?

  • http://www.littleleadheroes.com/ The Gonk

OOC, Serbia and Montenegro doesn’t officially exist anymore, correct? Montenegro voted for independance, and according to Wikipedia, as of June 5, Serbia declared its independance. Is this the first time a country that doesn’t exist any longer has fielded a team?

  • Roland

Roban is terrorizing Serbia-Montenegro. He will score again today.

  • Keyser

Robben is the man of the match so far.

  • Ali Siddiqui

I don’t think Ruud is going to be a major factor in Hollands game while Robben is doing so well.

  • About Beckenbauer being everywhere: he made some kind of promise to watch 80% of the matches on the WC from the stadium. He has an helicopter that takes him to places. I can’t find the news item right now, but that’s what I’ve read.

  • Roland

That is correct Gonk, this is the last World Cup for them, but I don’t think it’s the first time. I’m pretty sure the Soviet teams played for a little while together after officially breaking up, and Yugoslavia may have done the same in ‘94, although that was technically a civil war.

  • Dino

Must be nice to be able to do that!!! all I ask is one WC game experience

  • http://www.worldcupcorner.com Miha

I think Ruuds time today will be the second half and he will scooooreee.

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

hi everyone….how would u describe the game so far in one word ?

  • Ali Siddiqui

If I had to make a team name it would be the Barbosa Barbarians. :D Hope I can get into the WC after I found my own country.

  • http://ecuador.worldcupblog.org/ Trent

    mohan: “Robben”

  • Roland

    One word? Average.

  • James

it’s good to be the king… or kaiser

  • http://www.godblessthefreaks.org/philip/?p=95 philip’s tunnel to nowhere » If it isn’t Dutch…

[...] In honor of Nederland’s early 1-0 lead, and because i’m a proud Dutch-American on both sides, you’re going to get a theological thought that just occurred to me. I wonder if the hardcore Dutch Calvinists look at their country as an illustration of the dangerous of misunderstanding the Gospel of grace. Most really Reformed people (me included, supposing that i probably fall in that category) don’t believe that you can preach “too much grace,” but there’s certainly a danger that people will misunderstand it. And why not do evil that good may come?–as some people slanderously charge us with saying. Their condemnation is just. – Ro 3:8 (ESV)   [...]

  • Ali Siddiqui

Mohan, fast and furious. SM is trying hard so far. Better than the Double P’s that were suffering in the last matches.

  • Roland

I like Trent’s answer better, the story has been Robben so far.

  • Mohan, “orange”.

  • Ali Siddiqui

    ^I agree.

  • Keyser

SM may think about placing some cocodriles or mines on their right side. they are having a nightmare there. NL 2nd goal surely come from that side.(good thing is not the one in shadows)

  • Roland

Well if they were real Calvinists Philip, they wouldn’t worry because it would all be predetermined anyway, right?

  • http://sports.godblessthefreaks.org Philip

Anyone else curious just how Beckanbauer is getting to so many games so fast? My theory is cloning.

Yes! That was my first thought too when this was first mentioned. I would imagine that a free Kaiser was one of the perqs offered to each of the host cities to induce them to build nice stadiums as part of their bid.

  • Ali Siddiqui

I wonder how bad are these shadows? Are they really dark?

  • Despite missing that pass after a counterattack, SM shows they know how to play football.

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

its difficult to be playing for a country that doesn’t exist…what can motivate the serbians and montenegrans??

  • Ali Siddiqui

    A last hoorah before splitting?

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

40% of the ground is in shadow Ali…it spoils the view on television

  • Roland

Holland lucky to go into the half with the lead after that shot on goal by Serbia.

  • http://sports.godblessthefreaks.org Philip

    Roland,

At the very least they wouldn’t get as wound up about it as my American evangelical neighbors. :)

(I forgot that pingbacks excerpt here and wondered if you were reading my mind….)

  • Ali Siddiqui

40% Oh damn! These new stadiums seem to be causing more problems then they should!

  • James

what’s the locker room like? is there a line down the middle dividing the serbs and the montenegrans like in a bad sitcom?

  • Lyle

Serbia and Montenegro is not out of it… they might can get a goal back on the counter or off a set piece. They have a secret weapon on the bench.

  • http://ecuador.worldcupblog.org/ Trent

Anybody know how many Montenegrans are on the team?

  • Keyser

1 goal is no difference. NL should terminate it. they surely can do it.

  • Dino

What kinda beer are we drinking?

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

what does one do if he likes tennis as much as football ?

  • Dino

    Not Heinies I hope!!!

  • http://sports.godblessthefreaks.org Philip

    Trent,

You made me curious, but so far no luck with Wikipedia. The Montenegro national team doesn’t yet list any players. I suppose you could click through each player on the S&M team (*chuckle*, yeah i know it’s an old joke) and see where they’re from.

  • Keyser

there is only 1 player from montenegro.
Serbia may have problems in time because all the coast belongs to montenegro.

  • http://sports.godblessthefreaks.org Philip

Well, I got lucky. The first player article I clicked through to, on Jevrić, has yer answer: He is the only Montenegrin playing for Serbia and Montenegro in 2006.

  • Dino

anyone watching think S&M might regroup and pull it off?

  • http://ecuador.worldcupblog.org/ Trent

    Thanks, Philip!

  • Keyser

    Dino,
yes, absolutely. but NL will have some responsibility in that case. something similar to the last 15′ of ARG-CIV yesterday. NL is only leading 1-0. anithing can happen.
Kezman is not Drogba, but still he has some killer instinct.

  • http://www.littleleadheroes.com/ The Gonk

USA TV says 2 players from Montenegro.

  • Keyser

Chris, 10 points for your S&M one. LOL

  • http://www.worldcupcorner.com Miha

Dino, I’m watching and I’m very disapointed with SCG performance… I think they will not pull it off.

  • Dino

Txs Keyser just can’t really get the feel for the game from the comments and I’m not watching the game

  • Ali Siddiqui

What impressed me the most is how the Ivory Coast factions all ceased fire for this game. That’s passionate.

  • Roland

Dino it’s ten in the morning here! But for the Mexico game I’ve got a case of Corona sitting in the ‘fridge;)

  • Keyser

again, more guts than ideas, but SM i decided to go forward.

  • Dino

Limes to go with it not to mention a pretty senorita, right?
    cheers mate

  • Roland

S-M is by no means out of it, and won’t be until the Dutch can find that cushion goal. Right now it’s still within reach for the Serbo-Montenegrans. Although Robben is still giving them problems.

  • http://sports.godblessthefreaks.org Philip

Oh, joy! You can get play-by-play in Dutch from Nederland 1 (.asx). Not that i speak Dutch (aside from guessing at some Germanic roots), but details, details…. It still adds to the excitement of the event.

I remember catching a bit of Euro ‘92 on Radio Nederland when the Dutch announcers were taunting the Germans, whose side they were beating. “Auf wiedersehen! Auf wiedersehen!”

  • Roland

Dino, after I finish off that case she’ll be a knockout;)

  • Keyser

Van Basten could tell Robben to play on the right side.
at least we may see him.

  • Ali Siddiqui

Lets hope for a goal! Come on SM!

  • http://sports.godblessthefreaks.org Philip

    The Gonk:

It’s possible Wikipedia could be wrong, but given their respective reputations, I’d lay at least 10:1 it’s the US media that’s messed it up. If an error makes it in Wp, someone who knows better corrects it. If an error makes it in the US media, it gets repeated over and over again until everyone sincerely believes it to be fact. :)

  • James

if robben doesn’t reach for that, one of the other guys might have put that in, good service on the free kick

  • Roland

Golden free kick opportunity squandered by Holland, but they’re still controlling the tempo.

  • Ali Siddiqui

No love for Ruud this time around, eh?

  • Ali Siddiqui

54:10 – Wesley Snipes plays a tricky little chip into the area and Robben falls all over himself trying to connect with it. Nice variation when everyone was expecting a blast.

**Not only can Wesley Snipes act but he does a mean game of football. :D

  • Lyle

    Zigic will create a goal.

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

Serbians are looking to convert the corner

  • Roland

    Good pressure by Serbia now.

  • Ali Siddiqui

Good to see SM putting on the pressure! Come on SM get that goal!

  • Keyser

perhaps is an idiot question, but how many black players do this NL team have? Is said that during last WC there were racial tension in the team (I actually don’t know how true is that).

  • Dino

Ali keep rooting I need S&M to win

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

SM should take inspiration from Nadal and come back

  • Roland

Robben is the only player on this team today. The Dutch better pick it up, one goal is nothing and it would be a shame to let the Serbs escape with a tie.

  • Keyser

hoho! that was not a NL goal only by miracle!

  • Peter

Does anyone else think the camera angles are way too far away?? I can barely make out the players…

  • http://ecuador.worldcupblog.org/ Trent

Phil and the Gonk: I think the US media said there were two Montenegrans, but that one has been injured. So maybe only one made the WC roster and/or is able to play in this tournament?

  • Ali Siddiqui

Depends who’s feeding the view Peter. What channel are you watching off of?

  • lon

    heya

  • lon

actually ma tv isnt workin so can anyone tell me wt’s goin on with the match ?;)

  • Dino

    salam from USA

  • James

what is up with that guys hair?

  • Ali Siddiqui

Well, lon. Welcome and your not the only one who doesn’t have a TV that is working or even have a TV! :p

So far 1-0 Netherlands leading and SM trying to get into the box.

  • Keyser

Kezman out. he didn’t do anything, he’s still in Madrid.

  • lon

lol go NetherLands =D well i wanna ask something :S its ma first time in here so i hav to refresh the page every 5 sec ?

  • Dino

Yea Ion I’m at work so we are lucky to have these guys talk us through the game

  • Ali Siddiqui

Yup you gotta press F5 every now and then.

  • Ali Siddiqui

    Work on a Sunday Dino?

  • Roland

The Serbs seem unable to coordinate any kind of sustained attack. Holland could easily be up 3 – nil by now.

  • Dino

    yup

  • lon

lol okay then .. well there are some people are here from kuwait ,too so i wanna know how r u watchin the game ? do i have art or digital ?

  • Keyser

NL should score now the 2nd, or the end of the match will be painful for them. Van der Sar is starting to have some work…

  • Ali Siddiqui

Man that is harsh. What kind of Job requires you to work on Sundays and during the WC?

  • Roland

Great save by Van Der Sar! Finally the Serbs get a shot on goal.

  • lon

well hey might sunday not b a weekend thats wt in ma country :) :P

  • Ali Siddiqui

My prediction is looking grim so far…SM needs to make a goal!

  • lon

can any guys from kuwait answer ma question plz ..

  • Roland

Robben is setting Holland up beautifully, but so far he’s the only one at the dance…

  • Dino

British Co. making sugar substitute Splenda

  • Ali Siddiqui

LOL! lon I used to live in Kuwait for 2 years so I remember all the weekend changes.

  • http://sports.godblessthefreaks.org Philip

Just in case someone missed it while it was in moderation (forgive the repost): Above I posted a link for a Dutch-language play-by-play.

  • lon

lol!! yea ur name looks like ur an arabian person so that means u left it for studyin abroad huh ?

  • Ali Siddiqui

    Oooh! Substitute sugar!

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

    i like the Dutch moves…clockwork orange !! :)

  • Dino

actually not to bad tasting good for diabetics

  • Ali Siddiqui

Yup now I’m living back home in Canada.

  • lon

can anyone from kuwait tell me on which channel is he-she watching the match ?

  • Ali Siddiqui

    Mohan – “i like the Dutch moves…clockwork orange !!”

    *groans audibly* :D

  • lon

so u are arabian ? i mean u wont b back to kuwait anymore ?

  • Roland

Serbia-Montenegro barely offsides. They don’t communicate very well on attack. Now Holland threatens with the counter.

  • lon

well actually i prefer living out side somehow when i finish ma school maybe ill join somewhere there :P ;)

  • Keyser

Insist; NL has to score the 2nd, or they’ll suffer (in fact they already started to do so).

  • lon

so guys who u are with ?:P holland or the other ?

  • Ali Siddiqui

Oh Lord no lon. I went there with my family due to my dad’s job and ended up finishing my last year of high school education there. Wasn’t too happy with that mind you.

  • lon

Keyser are you watching the match ?

  • Roland

Wesley Sneijder is just having a lousy game. The Dutch still control the tempo, but they look a little too comfortable with this one point lead. It’s going to cost them if they don’t wake up.

  • Ali Siddiqui

Right now everyone here is rooting for SM to push through. Kinda gets boring when only one side plays with a lead.

  • lon

what do u mean ? u m,ean that u live in Canada and just went there for 1 year then ?

  • Roland

Yellow card on Dragodinovitch. Free kick for Holland.

  • Dino

roland I hope it does go S&M!!!!

  • Ali Siddiqui

Why do I have a haunting feeling this is turning into a rehash of England vs. Paraguay.

  • lon

    go Holland :D

  • Roland

Oh man! That must have missed by a centimeter!

  • http://sports.godblessthefreaks.org Philip

Kinda gets boring when only one side plays with a lead.

By definition, only one side in a match can play with a lead. :-P

  • Ali Siddiqui

    Yup @ 1 year deal.

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

too many interruptions? is it the heat??

  • lon

well c ya guys later was nice meeting u :) maybe ill b back tomorrow ;) and hav fun with the match :D :P

  • Keyser

    Yes Ion,
van der sar is not well… bad for the last 10′…

  • Dino

    later Ion be good

  • lon

and u too Ali it was nice to meet you :)

  • Roland

The Dutch would seem to have the advantage with the elevated game. I’m surprised we haven’t seen more crossing headers from them.

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

    yellow card for time wasting!

  • lon

keyser wt are you saying ?:P

  • Ali Siddiqui

Whoops! Caught me there Philip! Lack of sleep and caffeine really wrecks havoc on typing! I meant that it gets boring when the team with the lead doesn’t attempt to get another goal while the other team ambles about aimlessly.

  • Dino

is it hot as it was yesterday over there?

  • Ali Siddiqui

    Take care lon!

  • Keyser

    Ion: answring thyour question. why?

  • Ali Siddiqui

Oh that is rude for the Dutch to time waste!

  • Roland

Bah, I’m disappointed with this Dutch team – they have no imagination on the attack and now the Serbs are threatening.

  • lon

i want to know which channel u are using :S i cant the matches on ma tv are using digital ?or ART ?

  • Ali Siddiqui

85:40 – Mathijsen off for Boulahrouz who plays for Hamburger in Germany. You think he’d play for money like everyone else, but what can you say, the man likes his beef.

**Thanks, Chris. Now I’ve got coffee all over my monitor screen. :D

  • Roland

Another shot on goal by Robben – it’s like he’s the only guy out there.

  • Keyser

    that was close for SM!

  • lon

Keyser are you watching the match ?:P

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

this should be some kind of record for yellow cards…how many so far?

  • Ali Siddiqui

So far Mohan, there are 6 yellows in total…wow. That is insane.

  • Dino

    Ali which team has most?

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

the referee is wearing yellow jersey ! :)

  • Roland

    Last chance for Serbia.

  • Ali Siddiqui

It’s over 1-0 Holland. What a disappointing game.

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

    scrappy 2nd half

  • Dino

Shoot so much about my perfect record txs Chris and co. for the play by play see ya for Mex.

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

    S&M played negative i think

  • Ali Siddiqui

Dino – So far SM is leading by 4. Well, at least they got a lead in something I suppose.

  • Roland

    That did it.

Well, I expected a little more offense, but at least I picked the winner. What a dog of a game. Bleh.

Hopefully Mexico v. Iran will be more entertaining.

I still like the Netherlands to make the quarterfinals, and maybe more if they can find some offense.

  • Keyser

    1-0!
add SM to the list of teams with very few ideas on how to approach the opposite goal. You can always have a lucky center+header, but it was not the case today…

  • Ali Siddiqui

I second that Roland. Hope to see the Mexico vs. Iran game to be good.

  • Ali Siddiqui

See you all on the Mexican page!

  • Mark

Serbia and Montenegro outplayed Holland in the second half.

  • eltomas

nice game from robben, most dominant foward I’ve seen in the world cup so far, the guy was in a different level from everyone else, a demon in an orange suit. The dutch played well but they seemed too dependant of what bommel did either on the left or right, mostly from the left. Van persie was nowhere to be seen except for the pass that lead to the goal, and van nistelrooy like kuyt was just waiting and waiting for something to happen.

  • USA

This is a more efficient Dutch team that I am used to seeing. They played well, scored a good (though not spectacular) goal, and played in control the rest of the way. May be not as much flair as the 98 team, or the Euro-88 team (which beat my USSR team:(, but still pretty damn good. I’d say good enough for semifinal, if they don’t beat themselves. But then, again, I pick them every year, and they stumble somewhere near the finish line.

Serbs were not terrible, but nothing to write home about, particularly in the 1st half. A lot of errand passing and miscommunications. Perhaps the Dutch defense had something to do with that as well.

But Serbs were unlucky to get into this group. I can see them at least in contention for the 2nd spot in some of the other groups. But in this group, they will have to work to avoid being last.

  • raky_b

judges are allways for bigger and stronger teams…like holland today and argetina yesterday…now for mexico…. it is not fear
