Ecuador 2-0 Poland
Thank you all for reading and commenting! I had a blast, and hope you did too. 62 matches to go! Keep checking back with World Cup Blog for all the best news and views on this greatest of tournaments.

Fulltime. Wow, what a match for Ecuador. It certainly didn’t have the fireworks of the Germany-Costa Rica game, but what a huge result for La Tricolor. Ecuador 2-0 Poland.

90:00+ Ecua fans are being heard in the stadium.

90:00+ Poland are game and won’t quit, but time is slipping away. Ecuador defense comes up big again.

90:00 Poland denied by the woodwork again! Crazy.

89:20 Poland free kick cleared again by the Ecua defense.

88:10 Not much time left for Poland to try and get a result. Ecuador have played very well to this point. Props to Suarez to this point. but it’s not over!

86:55 Corner for Poland. Still threatening to notch one back, but it’s cleared.

85:15 Poland denied by the post! So close!

84:40 Ecuador corner harmlessly cleared by Poland, who are headed the other way.

83:31 Shot by Ebi saved by Mora, who hasn’t been that challenged today.

82:04 Oh my. What a play. Patient play from Ecuador leading to a great goal. And hey, maybe it wasn’t a golazo, but I was excited.

80:00 GOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Golazo de Agustin Delgado! Assist from Kaviedes!!! Ecuador 2-0 Poland.

76:39 Free kick for Poland. Out for a corner. No trouble.

74:50 Mora owes the defense dinner to tonight, win, lose or draw. The defense has made mistakes, but saved a lot of dicey situations.

73:40 Reasco saves the day again. But Poland win the throw in.

72:07 Kaviedes’s first touches have not been solid, although there have only been a couple. Nice shot by Mendez, though it was saved. And there was an offside. But still.

71:05 Less than twenty minutes to go. Can Poland take advantage of Hurtado’s injury?

70:00 Yellow card for Edison Mendez for some thing or another.

69:01 Hurtado still limping. And I’d say grimicing as well, except that he always looks like he’s grimicing. And there he goes. Jorge Guagua comes on in relief for Hurtado.

67:25 Poland makes some offenseive-minded substitutions, trying to intensify their attack. They of course desperately need a result in this match.

66:30 Hurtado back on the field. Tommy Smyth details his own blogging credentials.

65:33 Ecuador are down to 10 men as Hurtado gets attended to.

64:48 It goes without saying that losing Hurtado would be a mammoth blow for Ecuador. Carlos Tenorio leaves the field and is replaced by Ivan Kaviedes. Let’s see if El Nine has anything.

63:10 Now Hurtado’s down and wincing in pain. Medics are on the field.

61:50 Delgado nearly scooches through in the Poland box. That sounds naughtier than I meant it to.

60:20 If I’m Coach Luis Suarez, I’m worried that Poland are going to just take target practice until one scoots through. And that’s no way to go through life, son.

59:30 Carlos Tenorio is limping, and that ain’t good. Stays on the pitch, however.

58:46 A close shot for Poland blocked by Bam Bam Hurtado. Poland really seem like their knocking on the door of the Ecuador goal.

57:55 Another throw in for Ecuador as they counter attack once agains. But the chance is lost harmlessly.

56:25 Reasco forward for Ecuador. Throw in coming. Random pointing makes an appearance.

55:20 Getting a little sloppy in Gelsenkirchen.

53:49 Headed away without danger. Still, Poland is doiing a better job at keeping up their attack.

53:01 Ecuador seem content to wait for the counterattack. Corner kick for Poland.

51:40 Poland just offside, taking away a goal. Still 1-0 Ecuador.

51:15 Poland threatens, but Ecuador pushes it out again. Let’s hope that Ecuador don’t just sit back and try to run out the clock. That won’t work so early.

49:30 Neither team putting a whole lot together at this point.

48:25 I miss Tommy Smyth’s Highbury squirrel. Call me nostalgic.

48:01 Corner kick for Poland. Striaght out of bounds for a goal kick.

47:13 Free kick by Mendes taken in by Borus with little trouble.

46:18 Nice defense by Ecuador. At this point, they are not panicking at all when things get dicey.

45:00 Here we go! Ecuador kicks off.

Second half begins. An interesting first half. Poland took early control, but Ecuador slowly fought back, settled down, and had the better run of play. As I say, though, one goal isn’t much of a lead. Especially with those remote-controlled beachballs they’re using this year.

Halftime. A nice half for Ecuador, althoug a mere 1 goal lead is no dire circumstance for the Poles. What are your thoughts on the first half?

I should say that, after my dig at El Tin earlier, that he did get the assist on Tenorio’s goal. My apologies Tin!

45:00 That’s the first stanza. Ecuador 1-0 Poland.

44:48 Another corner for Poland, even though it was probably a goal kick situation. Punched out by Mora.

43:33 Mora gets a talking to from the ref for time wasting. no card, though.

41:56 Ecuador still looking calm and cool after their jittery opening. But here’s a free kick for Poland, which results in a corner. A close call for Mora, but a goal kick is set.

41:29 Nearing halftime. The Polish fans in the audience aren’t very pleased. A goal given up now by Ecuador could be really demoralizing.

39:45 Still 1-0 Ecuador. Ecuador back on the counterattack.

39:02 To answer, I thought the face paint was Ecuador’s colors. Could be mistaken.

38:00 Poland on the attack now. Throw in near the Ecua goal. Dangerous ball, but cleared for now.

36:40 Free kick taken by Edison Mendez. The ref chats with the wall. Nice shot, but gathered by the keeper after a weird bounce.

35:57 Smolarek gets a yellow for challenging Edwin Tenorio.

35:21 “Ecuador in command” says the announcer.

34:25 Carlos Tenorio is everywhere for Ecuador. Where is El Tin today? Besides missing sitters?

33:25 Still fairly even play, although Ecuador has evened out the time of possession.

32:30 A corner for Ecuador. Header goes wide; goal kick for Poland.

31:19 I just noticed that Ecua keeper Mora is wearing face paint. Cool. i’m sure FIFA will convene at halftime to outlaw such shows of patriotism and exuberance.

30:47 Yelloow card for Ecua Capt. Ivan Hurtado for a bad tackle.

30:00 Free kick for Ecuador. Hurtado goes short with it. Poles get possession.

28:58 Ecuador out-shooting Poland 4-1. Still, El Tin really missed a sitter there. SHould be 2-0. But it’s still 1-0.

27:10 Delgado missed a six yarder. Sooo close!

26:20 Some nice possession play for Ecuador. Ecuas look a little emboldened by the goal. 1-0 Ecuador.

25:06 I would mention that I predicted that Carlos Tenorio would score first in this match, but that just seems like bragging, doesn’t it?

23:44 GOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAL!!!!! Super Teno!!!!! Carlos Tenorio with a great header off of a de la Cruz throw in. 1-0 Ecuador

21:20 Free kick for Ecuador 15 yards past midfield. C. Tenorio nearly squeezes through, but a push was called.

20:10 Poland still getting the most possession, but it’s mostly back and forth. Aren’t we supposed to have 3 goals by now in this match?

19:06 Awesome tackle by Espinoza. Ecuas on the counter attack.

18:03 Free kick for Poland, knocked out by Ecuador for a Polish corner kick.

17:00 A dangerous run by C. Tenorio, but the keeper collects. Bak not playing too well for the Poles in the back. As it were.

16:14 A quick Poland run ends in a goalkick for Ecuador.

15:30 The announcers are still talking about the new ball. At least no one is saying “roundier” anymore.

13:45 Free kick for Poland in a dangerous position. Taking their sweet time. Waaaay over the goal.

13:21 A lot of time being spent in the midfield. Still 0-0.

12:21 Sobolewski greets Carlos Tenorio in kind. Ouch.

11:05 Ebi makes a nice play for the Poles headed toward the Ecua goal, but eventually kicks it out of bounds for a throw in.

10:24 Another nice shot by Castillo for Ecuador, bur Boruc brings it in without trouble. Still 0-0.

9:15 Ecuador is the Denver Broncos of soccer, we are told. Okay. Ecuador are now gaining some more control. Looks pretty even right now.

8:15 Carlos Tenorio’s elbow finds the Polish captain.

7:35 Ecuador need to push the ball up more down the sides. Did I mention those yellow boots? Style!

6:25 Poland win the first corner of the match, after a nice run. Punched out by Mora. Poland still threatening, and then it’s cleared.

5:30: Valencia’s shot goes wide left after a nice run.

4:22: Tommy Smyth just used the word “roundier.”

3:00: Poland have controlled the ball early, though no chances have developed.

1:26: We’re under way in Glesenkirchen. Several Ecuas are wearing bright yellow boots. Very bright yellow.

0:00: And we’re off!

Aaaaany minute now. And to the commenter below, Musberger isn’t calling the game in the US; just giving us some pre-taped blather.

Probable Lineups:

Ecuador:
Cristian Mora
Ulises de la Cruz, Ivan Hurtado, Giovanni Espinoza, Neicer Reasco
Segndo Castillo, Edwin Tenorio, Edison Mendez, Antonio Valencia
Carlos Tenorio, Agustin Delgado

Poland:
Artur Boruc
Jacek Bak, Mariusz Jop, Michal Zewlakow, Marcin Baszczynski
Jacek Krzynowek, Arkadiusz Radomski, Miroslav Szymkowiak, Radoslav Sobolewski, Ebi Smolarek
Maciej Zurawski

2 minutes. Can either of these teams successfully put their 2002 first-round crash-outs in the rearview mirror today?

5 minutes to go. Getting jittery with excitement.

10 minutes to go. So, do you guys think we’ll see 6 goals again?

15 mintues til kickoff. Right now I’m watching the ESPN2 US feed. Their chatterers are intimating that Poland and Ecuador will be fighting it out for second place behind Germany, which seems about right. Oh ,dear: now Brent Musburger is going on about Ecuador’s homefield advantage in Quito. If Poland wins, you’ll be hearing even more about this in the coming weeks.

Only 25 minutes to go, and my Ecuador shirt just arrived on my front porch. That’s gotta be a sign, right?

Which means it’s a good time to note that my day blogging job is over at the Ecuador blog. So, I do have a rooting interest, but still have much love for Polska.

30 minutes til kickoff. I hope you all feel free to leave your comments and observations below during the match. I think there’s a consensus feeling that this is going to be an unsually good tournament. Certainly the first game lends credence to this collective hunch. Cross your fingers!

One hour to go! What a cracker the opening match between Group A teams Germany and Costa Rica turned out to be. Let’s hope this one is as entertaining.

Pregame: Kickoff is only a few hours away!

Qualifying for the WorlCup the second time in a row for Ecuador is a feat in itself. This country has been devastated by natural catastrophes, political turmoil and poor foreign relations.

Despite all this it’s people keep an eternal patriotic fervor throughout it all. Their soccer team and coaching has reached a crucial point, where it is now time to prove it deserves respect. I have no doubt their performance will surpass everyone’s expectations.

    ! GO ECUADOR !

  • Jason

Anywhere to stream the match online in the US?

  • matthew

    Guessing Poland 2 Ecuador 1.

  • Ali Siddiqui

Go Ecuador!! Love these real time blogs! You guys are answering my prayers for not having a TV and using Wireless interne! Ole Ole!

  • Roland

This is a very tough one to call. Poland has impressed and has decent ranking, but the Ecuadorians have already proven they can beat the best the America’s could throw at them.

I’m going to go out on a limb here and predict the match will play tighter than the earlier one: 2 – 2 tie.

  • Yovany

    Vamos Ecuador!!!

Soy Colombiano pero apoyo a mis vecinos.

I’m Colombian but I’m really pulling for my neightbors.

    Ecuador 2 Poland 1

    Vamos Tricolor!!! Vamos Suarez!!!

  • Michael

I’ve been listening to an Argentine station at work. Man do they commentate fast.

    http://www.radiomitre.com.ar/popup_audio.asp?Id=vivo

I’ve got my tivo set to record the Univision feed. I can’t stand the American style of commentary.

  • http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/worldcupfan/ dw

Good lord, BRENT MUSBERGER is doing this game? Suddenly, I’m very happy I’m at work and not TiVo’ing the game.

Musberger is the worst commentator in American sports not named Joe Morgan.

  • Ali Siddiqui

Roland I can almost agree if it wasn’t because Poland is pretty much a veteran team against Ecuador being relatively new on the big stage. I think 2-1 for Poland and at best like you said 2-2 tie.

Btw, for all of you luckless ppl like me with no TV or Radio and on Wireless internet I suggest you do this:

1)Go to ESPN.com and click on the splash for the “Soccer Net” live coverage.

    2)http://soccernet.espn.go.com/match?id=191919&cc=5901

After that click on GAMECAST this’ll bring up a Pop-up for the game with alot of information for the game. I’m trying it right now myself and i’ll say if it’s any good once the game starts off.

  • Russ

I say the score will be 5-2

  • Football Freak

    My take 2 – 1 to Poland

  • Ali Siddiqui

  • chris

How tall is that linesman! He must be 4′7!. How can he see?

  • Ali Siddiqui

    Ahhhhh! I’m so excited!!

  • Roxana

My take is 2-1 for Poland, but I sincerely root for Ecuador…I hope they can pull this one….

  • Russ
  • Ali Siddiqui

How do i get the RSS working? Instead of refreshing my browser every few seconds!? O_o

  • Ali Siddiqui

^Russ your kidding? I can see it just fine! Ok, try doing this go to http://www.espn.com and look for Soccer Net on the toolbars or the World Cup 2006 button.

  • Ali Siddiqui

It maybe because when i clicked on the website it asked where I was viewing the game from (North America of course). Maybe that is why it’s not automatically logging up for you? Tell me how it goes.

  • Mike

This isn’t an important game..Poland is way too strong for either Ecuador or Costa Rica..The big match will be the offensive explosion next Wednesday between Germany and Poland. With Ballack struggling, look for Poland to draw or sneak a win. If I had to bet a testicle on it..Poland 3: Germany 3. If Ballack is healthy, then Germany wins the group…

  • Hex

Yellow Boots? (sic) is that like a Bootsnall Freudian slip?
    LOL!!!

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

Pretty even so far in the first 10 mins

  • Ali Siddiqui

Oh no. I think the ESPN server has been slash dotted to Hell! Server overloaded!

  • Germany

Look at this webpage for video streaming:
    http://www.fussball-foren.net/fussball-live.html#live

  • matthew

“Ecuador is the Denver Broncos of soccer,” that’s the kind of ESPN comment that makes the milk shoot out my nose.

  • Hex

The E players are pretty aggressive and forcing the P players to make mistakes.

  • Ali Siddiqui

Ecuador is playing quite well from what i’m reading! Looks like they want to prove themselves out there!

  • Hex

The brits are warped in many ways including their commentating…

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

midfield play most of the time…no wonder crowd is getting restless

  • Roland

Whoah, Poland dodged a bullet with Tenorio there.

  • Randir

!7 minutes …. where are the goals…. crowds getting restless….

  • Hex

Not many fouls or errors until now. Frustration is building.

  • Roland

I thought it would be tighter and so far it is. The goals scored in this game will come off mistakes. They’re more evenly matched than people realize.

  • Hex

    Possession

    P 48%
    E 52%

  • Ali Siddiqui

Me thinks that Trent is getting anxious for a goal! :D

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

good header by Ecuador for the first blood

  • Ali Siddiqui

1-0 ECUADOR! Trent you got your prayers!

  • Randir

CUAt last 23 minutes and it is a goal … well done ECU

  • Lo

  • http://www.worldcupblogzone.blogspot.com Ade Lamidi

Shock 1-0 lead by the Ecuadorians. Nice one Trent

  • http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/worldcupfan/ dw

Even Musberger narration makes my ears bleed.

    Yay, the battle is joined.

  • Hex

    Musberger should retire… :-)

  • spence

BTW, both ESPN gamecast and SI’s matchcast are 10min behind your live blogging. US coverage is worthless.

  • Ali Siddiqui

The Poles must be worried now…the Ecuadorians must have been really prepared to give them a run for their money!

  • Roland

Excellent goal. Ecuador looks “muy impresionante.” But don’t discount the Poles, the crowd should help them come back.

Man this Fútbol de Primera announcer is amazing. His spanish is some of the fastest I’ve ever heard call a game.

Listening to the english language coverage is just sad.

  • Ekul

Just as I predicted, Ecuador go one up, I hope it stays this way, or Ecuador get more goals.

  • Hex

Delgata was close on that one.

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

shock lead? Ecuador is definitely playing better than Poles !

Mora wearing face paint, haha! Go Ecuador!

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

the lithe latin americans vs the bulky europeans….the contrasting style is getting very evident now !

  • Randir

Poles seems a bit shaken… defence seem a bit weak ..

  • Lo

What does the facepaint look like?

  • Hex

White face paint from what I saw. Not that serious. :)

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

even play? you must be kidding Trent!! Ecuador is looking distinctly better!

  • Franco Caliz

I watched the opener on ESPN 2. Then I heard tommy smyth was doing this game, switched over to Univision, and I rather listen to Chilavert. He’s actually doing a great job, and the other guy with him is pretty good. (Better than Smyth). They should be Univision’s first team. Also, are the poland fans louder than the German fans or what?

    Poland: 0 Ecuador: 1

24’ Boom. Goal Great goal from Carlos Tenorio from the center box. It was a header on an assist from Delgado

Anyways, it looks like it is having a slow start and not as explosive as the first game. Nonethless people are …

  • Hex

    Nice save.

  • Ali Siddiqui

The Polish fans do want to win…nothing like badgering the team for not getting a goal! :p

Poland has blown a couple of opportunities so far. They’re not taking advantage of the miscommunication in the Ecuadorian defense.

How to watch the game online? Is there any way? I don’t have TV access now but i want to watcht it on the internet. Hope to get help.
    USA

  • matthew

I’m reading the blog and watching on Univision and ESPN 2 as well as streaming audio on my PC, switched back and forth between the two stations and ESPN is not draggin 10 minutes behind. In fact, I saw a score in the Germany game and hit refreash for about 1 minute before it showed on the blog. You guys are doing a great job keeping up, but I just wanted to reply t o the person who said ESPN was 10 minutes behind in the coverage. ESPN is on time.

  • Alexis

Mora needs to step up right now. He could of lost one goal for us

  • http://www.topdrawersoccer.com RobertZ

I had tipped Ecuador to make it out of the group and in the first 15 minutes I was thinking I had bet on the wrong horse.

It’s definitely not settled though as Ecuador are giving away WAY too many set pieces in dangerous territory. I wish they had finished that 2nd chance.

  • Ali Siddiqui

I think this Cup is going to witness alot of upsets! Just like in 2002.

  • http://www.worldcupwatcher.com Lionel Messi

Kamal, there are streaming links to watch the game online in http://www.worldcupwatcher.com

    It-s pretty cool site indeed.

  • spence

matthew, I’m not sure what you’re looking at, but I’m talking about the espn gamecast. I’ve been watching it all morning and the thing is as slow as molasses. I’m on a T-1 connection as well.

  • Roland

Poland is apparently 0 – 7 – 0 when trailing at the half. Not an encouraging statistic!

  • http://www.worldcupblogzone.blogspot.com Ade Lamidi

Ecuador contained the Poles in the first half.

  • juras

i have to watch the game on a nyc/nj local hispanic channel so predictably the sentiments of the commentators run toward south american teams…
however, after the first half i couldn’t actually blame anyone who would harbor such sympathy…jeeeezzz…i’m embarassed to be polish…my team looks like a bleeding amateur league..no constitution, no drive, no passion…and equally important-no technical skills besides static, rigid ‘plays’ that just fail to pan out [outside of a training session apparently]…no one wants to go after the ball, there seems to be no drive on the part of players to want to rally and make a shot on the goal, no dynamics, no…anything!!!!… everyone on my [polish] side makes stupid amateurish mistakes and loses posession due more to their own lack of skill rather than superior skill of ecuadorian layers..then, once the posession is lost no one feels the need to go after the ball and win it back at least..
to me it looks like all the polish players are seriously high on pot..they can’t even remain on their legs after a relatively light tackle or contact with a player from the ecuadorian team..total FUBAR…and the weirdest thing is that many on the PL team are seasoned experienced players and do well in bundesliege and other euro teams…i’m so bloody depressed i’m getting sad-drunk as i write this…this team does not deserve to move out of the group if it keeps this sad status quo of the level of play…ok, back to the game..hopefully janas ripped them a new a-hole during the break…

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

    unconventional save by Mora

  • Roland

Dubious offsides call on Poland. That goal looked good to me.

  • http://www.timmietv.nl Ruben

The tv commentator agreed with the linesman on that offside appeal. I didn’t.

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

just doesn’t seem to be Poland’s day…they are making brave moves now

  • Ekul

    Trent…was that a Freudian Slip I read?

  • Hex

He’s going on a stretcher, it must be real.

For those of you unaware, Ecuador’s strategy has always been to score the first goal and then fein a series of injuries to waste time.

    it works…

Good game Teno!! Come on Ivan Kaviedes!

    ecuador yellowcarded for time wasting

  • Hex

This game might see overtime IMO.

  • Roland

Poland is steadily building pressure, but they can’t find the net. This is where the mental game becomes critical. Can the Poles keep their composure and finish off a score?

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

nice try at goal by ecuador..their morale is high

  • ETucker

its more to kill the game’s rhythm….also, the ref’s never add enough extra time; next game, keep track for yourself and see what i mean…..

  • Ekul

If Poland do score, it’ll be in the 89th minute or injury time, knowing my luck, they’ll score twice near the end and beat Ecuador.

The painted pols don’t look very happy. :(

  • http://www.worldcupblogzone.blogspot.com Ade Lamidi

The Poles haven’t got a clue. I am very disappointed in their play

  • Roland

This is just not Poland’s day. But take heart Polish fans! The group is not yet lost and losing to Ecuador is no shame. The Tris beat Argentina and Brazil in the qualifiers, after all. Victory in the next two matches now becomes essential for them – but it’s not over!

  • bAllack

    Dude, those polish n00bs suck!
Go Go Go Germany!MAke me proud ;o)

  • Ali Siddiqui

The Ecuadorians sure hid their true strength for today! Beers on me!

  • Ali Siddiqui

Matt you can try the Game Cast for ESPN…however a few minutes ago the server practically died on me due to the overload of ppl wanting to watch it. It up and running now!

  • http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/worldcupfan/ dw

Wow. Just… wow. I don’t think any work’s going to get done in Quito for a while.

Hard to believe this is only their second Cup.

  • Arif

This match is also going to be a thriller

  • Hex

The Pols just can’t get lucky.

  • Ali Siddiqui

My brother in law in Philly is going insane! Gooo Ecuador! :D

  • Ekul

Just shows how much Ecuador have grown up in 4 years, quite remarkable really. This is one truly great game for Ecuador fans.

  • Ali Siddiqui

    it’s over….
    :-(
and to be truthful most of you guys are on the kind side with your comments regarding poland..we simply suck in this game..even an honorable goal seems unlikely before the match is over…it just seems to me that everyone on the pl team has a total hangover but even that would be no excuse…i’m bleeding depressed…no glory for poland this cup either…methinks my old platoon from my us navy days could even beat them with just physical conditioning and drive…this team just seems to have no balls…

  • http://www.littleleadheroes.com/ The Gonk

Two off the post!! Poland was two feet away from a tie.

  • Ekul

Who thinks Brazil will crash out of this tournament before Quarter Finals? Or even like France did 4 years ago at the first hurdle without a win?

    Anything can happen.

  • Becky

Another post? My lord, are they jumping into the path of the ball?

  • Hex

E is fast. Very fast even at the end of the game.

  • Ekul

Juras man, Poland are a great side, they just got caught out by the confidence of Ecuador. I believe they will win against Costa Rica and draw against Germany. Still hope yet.

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

Ecuador played well, their rhythm was better. But Poland was unlucky…it just wasn’t their day. Ecuador should now qualify along with Germany from this group.

  • Ali Siddiqui

Ecuador seems to be getting alot of help from the Beyond with those posts…I got a msg from my sister who is watching. The Ecuadorian fans are all singing, “OLE OLE OLE!” :D OLE!

  • http://www.littleleadheroes.com/ The Gonk

    Congratulations, Ecudor!

  • Ali Siddiqui

    Bravo Ecuador! Muy Bueno Game!

  • Ekul

Good game Ecuador, made South America proud, even if you are outsiders in this tournament, you still got a great and deserved victory, qualification to knockout round is just two games away, take advantage of Germany’s sloppy defending and give them some lessons in how to keep defense tight and not scrambled!

  • Hex

Thanks Trent et al! Another nice live World Cup blog!!!

  • Ali Siddiqui

Thank you so much World Cup Blog and Trent and everyone there! You made my day the happiest with this! OLE OLE!! :D :D

  • Yovany

To those that expected a blow out. (Meaning Poland crushing Ecuador) That did not happened. Ecuador was able to withstand the clumsy and unorganized offense Polish play.

Excellent coaching by Luis Fernando Suarez.

Excelente Ecuador!!! Vamos Tricolor!! Te saluda un Colombiano.

    Tomorrow: Paraguay 1 England 0

  • Roland

Brazil will not crash. They will underachieve and squeeze into the second round, where they will meet Spain . . . and they will lose in penalties after an epic match.

  • Football Freak

Hi Trent and everyone at World Cup Blog,

Thanks a lot for this and hope that you will do this for the next 62 matches as we need this when we are away from TV and at work.

Anyway the first minor upset of World cup 2006. Ecuador gets a 2-0 on Poland.

What a great 1st day. A fantastic opening match and an upset too on the first day itself.

    Toooo Goooood.

    Bye

  • http://img211.imageshack.us/gal.php?g=ski9qv.jpg juras

ekul-that’s very nice and i appreciate the kind word but unless we’ll start playing like we want to win at any cost, costa rica will embarass poland as well…germany played very well, a couple of levels higher than PL and still won only 2 goals over c-r..

ha, time to get drunk and few things are worse than having to get pissed-off drunk when one was hoping for a celebrating drunk hehe..cheers to all…poof…

  • Roland

Strike that, that would be Spain going second and meeting them in the quarterfinals. I really should check my sheet before posting such bravado, lol.

  • USA

I feel vindicated since I predicted a 3:1 Ecuador victory.

Poland was disappointing, but not surprising. They lost 0:1 to the U.S. and, according to recent media accounts, had trouble scoring goals (shocking, considering they scored a lot in qualifying). The game was consistent with those complaints: with the exception of the last five minutes, Poland tried in vain to get through the center, was poor in passing the ball, and very uncreative. In contrast, Ecuador was decent in defending and very opportunistinc in counterattack.

Poland re-discovered their game in the last five minutes (flank attacks, good passing), hit the post twice. But they should have played like that while the score was 0:0. So, congratulations on Ecuador on a well-deserved victory. They are in good position to be that 2nd qualifying team out of group A.

  • hoa

    Go Ecuador………

  • tomchaps

I watched the last half on TV. Did anyone else notice the Poles slipping and falling a lot? (And not in the Italian hoping-to-draw-a-foul way, either.) Who makes their shoes?

  • http://www.viuasfotos.com/euler.htm Euler

Congrats Ecuador! I bet Ecuador will win over Germany. Costa Rica was a sad game to watch. Where was the Costa Rica players? They seemed afraid to go forward. Even so they scored twice on the Germans…

  • Ali Siddiqui

    !Viva Ecuador…Si Se Puede!

  • Akbar

2 matches gone and nobody has been able to predict the results correctly!

What an exciting World Cup this is turning out to be

  • bigboaby

Surely Delgado was offside when he scored Ecuador’s second!! I have seen that type of goal before and for some reason it is almost invariably allowed to stand. Any views??

  • ETucker

Any US fans in Santo Domingo should go to the infamous “Beerhouse” to watch the games.

If anyone needs directions let me know….

  • carrie

It was a good game i should say specially for Ecuador. Poland did not play well we should admit. I am truly happy for Ecuador and Latin America.

  • Roland

Delgado did look offside, but I’ve only seen the replay once, so…

  • Ninj

dissapointed in poland’s performance, they seemed quite slow on the ball.

Nice game – I only could take time from work to watch 1/2 of one game and I picked this over Germany CRC since it was clear germany would win that one and I hvae had Ecuador down to be one of the sleeper teams all along – I had them to win 2-1 which is what the final score should ahve been – just as the second Ecuador goal is onside in my book, the poland one that was called back was also onside – I think they need to amend the offside rule so that it reads ‘if there is any doubt at all in the official’s mind as to whether it is on or offside then it is ALWAYS ruled onside’.

anyway – clearly ecuador’s game – poland needed to play all game like they played the last 15 minutes. they were pretty bad in the first half.

as for paraguay beating england – dream on – Ecuador is two goals better than paraguay and england is two goals better than poland – so we arrive at my prediction england 2 – paraguay 0.

great world cup so far – and all credit to the polish fans who were were dynamite – despite all the predictions of racism and hooliganism from them they were superb.

  • woy

    again… first world cup match… again 0-2 (like 4 years ago with Korea)… i’m raelly sad :(

  • Davey

Just watched the game on video after I got home from work. Great game Equador, hope Paraguay can repeat that result against the Poms tomorrow

hell yes! Ecuador rocked that game,Mora is an awesome goalie and Espinoza and Tenorio are beasts in the field. I definately think that Ecuador has what it takes to beat Costa Rica easily.

oh yea btw your little broadcasting is really well done, although i watched it on the spanish channel and missed all that talk about Ecuadors home advantage in Quito….man theyr haters, theyr just jealous haha..anyways support Ecuador because they’ve definately proven people wrong about their team strenght…they owned that game, even though poland is pretty good. oh yea u just reminded me i need to get a new ecuador jersey.

  • al jahan

    thank you so much.

  • offside?

    2 strange offside decisions:

    1. offside decision with Krzynoweks goal (there was no offside in my opinion)

2.second goal for ecuador was offside

  • Ivi

  • smith

poland r absolute shite but go ecuador u r amazin and can thrash germany GO ON ECUaDOR!!

  • Ala

This match started a real war in Poland between a) journalists b) Janas the coach c) players (they’re constantly fighting with the journalists :/) etc. The match simply put me down… There were moments I felt ashamed that I’m Pole… Now we are coming back home… and you know what? Janas is accusing journalists, players as well, some of them are demotivated and the goalkeeper said during today’s conference that he is playing ‘ping-pong’ (Jesus, am I correct??) instead of watching other teams’ matches… Well, maybe he thinks he’s the best and there is no use watching Brazil or Argentina for instance…

  • pf

he, let the blame games begin now… Fun, fun.

    2010 here we come again!

  • Ala

I can’t wait to see the match with Costa Rica… Actually I’m in the middle of extremely difficult exam session at university… However, all the exams pale into insignificance- I prefer matches :)
