LiveBlog: Netherlands-Ivory Coast

The Netherlands gets a pair of two first half goals to win the match and to advance to the second round of the World Cup. Read the blow-by-blow below and leave your comments on the game.

Final: Netherlands 2-1 Ivory Coast

Full time Holland comes away with an earned 2-1 victory over a very capable Ivory Coast team. The Dutch took advantage of their opportunities and advance out of Group C along with Argentina. Ivory Coast goes home in their debut World Cup.

90+ One last yellow card in this card filled match. One last free kick for Ivory Coast. They should have everyone in the box and it is a dreadful kick.

90+ Ivory Coast with one last corner. It goes long and just doesn’t get the job done. The time is ticking and it doesn’t look like it will happen.

90:00 Three minutes of added time. Can Ivory Coast pull out a late miracle?

89:14 A sea of orange in the stands up and dancing. They can taste victory.

88:13 Ivory Coast with yet another attack in the Netherlands end but the Dutch respond and the clock continues to tick. It looks like the Elephants might be running out of gas. Not the greatest Holland performance but it has been effective and they look likely to for through.

86:45 Ivory Coast showing they might be the class of the African teams in this tournament. My beloved Angola is up next but they don’t look nearly as solid. Dutch controlling the ball and hanging on to the lead.

85:15 Five minutes for Ivory Coast to keep alive. The Holland-Argentina match will lose some of its luster is they both have already advanced.

84:02 van der vaart making things happen on the left side. He is moving well coming off of injury. The Dutch are passing it around more while the Elephants are desperae in the chase.

82:05 Boka down again for Ivory Coast. I think he is just trying to show off his orange boots. Pretty spiffy looking.

81:35 Ivory Coast might not be the best team in the World Cup but I enjoy their style and their effort. They are giving the Dutch all they could ask for.

80:45 This has been an entertaining match to liveblog. Thanks for joining in with your comments. Let’s see if we see another spectacular finish.

80:01 Ivory Coast going forward with the attack while the Dutch try to hang on to their lead. You can tell which team needs a point and which team wants the three.

78:23 Drogba falls down in the box and there is no call. Ivory Coast with another corner. This could be their chance. But it is headed away. Holland putting all their players behind the ball trying to hold on.

76:35 Ivory Coast corner. Drogba heads it and it bounces off a Dutch defender on the line. Closer than it looked at first. Van Persie with the chest save on the line.

75:35 I will be seeing this referee in my dreams tonight. Not that I am attracted to him but he has been omnipresent.

75:00 Ivory Coast with 15 minutes to make it happen or go home after the first round. Netherlands 15 minutes away from joinin Argentina in the second round.

73:01 Ruud is out and Ladzaat in. A. Kone out and Akale in for IC.

72:04 Bakary Kone reluctant to pull the trigger even though he was close in and had an open path to the goal. First rule of scoring is you have to shoot to score.

70:46 Holland with the better run of things the past five minutes. If you don’t see me commenting these next few minutes it is because I have been struck with lightning. Might make my hair look like Boka’s.

69:46 van Nistlerooy is selfish player. There. I said it. Crucify me.

69:26 Have to think you are going to be a cool person if your name is Yaya. Toure is a nice player. This Ivory Coast team has some talent for being such a small country. They should be proud of their performance thus far even though they have been on the losing end of things.

67:25 Thunder roaring in Berlin but it is nice in Stuttgart. The yellow card has served as an anti-rain dance.

65:44 And the record comes to an end after Boka drags down van Persie. Kind of a weak call but that is the story of all these yellow cards.

64:46 We’ve established a new record. We have gone two minutes without a yellow card.

64:03 Greatly regretting the choice of Bitburger beer this half, but at least I am not like some of you who are at work and unable to imbibe. My heart goes out to you. Netherlands still lead by a goal.

63:02 Van Persie traps it with his hands. I believe that is against the rules. Silly rules.

61:55 Dutch backline looking better organized this half but the Elephants are still creating chances. This is turning out to be a decent day of football and Angola hasn’t even played yet.

60:20 Aruna Dindane also coming on for the Elephants. Henri Michel is going for broke as he should with his team in need of at least a point.

59:21 Gilles Yapi coming on for Ivory Coast. Another tremendous name but my favorite remains Jerko Leko for Croatia and Pimpong for Togo.

57:45 A. Kone blasts it well high over the Dutch goal. This is shaping up to be a good finish.

57:06 Yellow card given to van Bommel. Everyone in the World Cup now officially has a yellow card.

56:19 Boka carried off on a stretcher. A little magic spray ought to make him as good as new.

54:46 Boka down after getting his ankle stomped. That one has to hurt. Not as much as if you miss the next game Angola vs. Mexico. Hope you can join me for that one. Angola is my adopted team and I will be cheering them on.

53:45 A bit of a ragged start to the second half but Ivory Coast starting to create some chances. They will play hard and desperate this half.

52:33 Beckenbauer and Sepp Blatter are in the stands. I want to see Maradona sit next to those guys. He is a nutcase when he watches Argentina. I love it.

51:46 For those scoring at home I am drinking a Bitburger. Probably the worst German beer I have had to date. The Dutch fans on their feet singing with joy. They will have a nervous 40 minutes in this one.

49:51 Van der Vaart on for Wesley Sneijder and Ruud puts one on target but it is saved by the dodgy IC keeper.

49:35 This referee is a camera hog. He is calling everything including phantom fouls. His arm might fall off with all the times he has lifted it to show yellow cards.

48:32 The more I see of Holland the more I think they might be a couple of years away from being a serious threat. Plenty of young players with talent but they aren’t at the level of Argentina at this stage.

46:18 The Group of Death hasn’t necessarily lived up to its name but three of the teams have shown they are very capable. Van Persie with a shot on goal that is saved without much effort.

45:01 The second half is underway. We’ve seen 9 goals already today. Will we see more in the next 45? Ivory Coast sure hopes so. They need at least a tie to stay alive.

Halftime The Dutch got first blood with a pair of goals, but Ivory Coast has come back to make this game interesting. Overall, not a poorly played first half with plenty of up and down the field action. I’m going to get another beer and will be back at the start of the next half. What do you think so far? Which team will win? What should I do with the money I just won in the Spanish lottery?

44:15 Ivory Coast Tizie is a nervous breakdown waiting to happen. He doesn’t make anything look easy. Even lacing up his boots.

43:45 Both teams showing that their defenses are vulnerable and that they have the ability to score. Group C has some high scoring teams, S&M excluded.

41:45 Drogba on a 2-1 break away and he earns a corner. Should have done better. Corner is taken and it is cleared away.

41:15 The Elephants have shown some good fight. Down by a pair of goals they could have folded but they are back in this one.

39:49 Drogba puts a boot in against van de saar and he is shown, what else, a yellow card. Bit harsh of a call really.

39:02 The Ivory Coast goal makes things a little more interesting before the end of the first half. If they can get a tie they can stay alive in the World Cup.

37:32 GOALLLL!!! Bakary Kone makes the run by himself and drills it into the top left corner. Great strike as the Elephants get one back.

37:05 Ruud van Nistlerooy is making all kinds of hand signals but his teammates are ignoring him. Poor dude.

36:03 Bakary Kone down. Might have to amputate his neck. He looks ok. No Beckenbauer sightings today. Is the Kaiser getting bored with football?

34:27 Mathijsen given a yellow for abusing Drogba from behind. This is the World Cup of yellow cards.

32:45 Robben goes for a flop in the box and he is given a yellow. There was minor contact but Robben went down like he was shot by a cannon.

32:10 Zokora with a blast that hits the bar. He had the Dutch keeper beat but is denied by the woodwork.

31:15 Ivory Coast looking uncertain moving forward. Drogba with a nifty flip over his back but it doesn’t work.

29:25 Holland with two chance and two goals. Very effective play from the Oranje. Ivory Coast starting to show its disorganization in the back. The Elephants will continue to attack though so that might keep this one interesting.

27:45 Hard to say if Ruud was offside but it doesn’t matter, the goal counts and Ivory Coast’s World Cup chances are starting to look grim.

25:58 GOALLLLLLL!!!! Robben finds Van Nistlerooy and he burries it home. Ivory Coast was looking for offside but Ruud was wide open.

24:42 Zokora shown a yellow card and it isn’t for his hair. It will be interesting to see how the Elephants respond knowing they need to get at least a point in this one.

22:54 Just a top notch strike from Van Persie but the keeper should have had that one. It went over the wall and right past the keeper’s hand.

22:14 Van Persie taken down outside the box and Holland has a good direct kick chance from straight on. The referee looks like he is having fun with his little microphone headset. Van Persie drills it over the wall. Lovely GOALLLLLLLLLLL!!!

19:40 Robben with a decent run down the side but it is taken away. Too much individual play in this one. Argentina showed a complete team game earlier. Neither side showing that yet in this one.

18:07 Ivory Coast just rolling the ball around. Holland not looking impressive thus far. Boka with a weak shot.

16:15 Ya-Ya Toure with a good opportunity but he hits the side of the net.

15:26 Ndri Romaric’s bleached hair almost broke my television. Man that is one ugly look. Could be in a sci-fi movie.

13:52 Dutch frontline permanately in an offside position. Ivory Coast has no fear. Hopefully the game will open up a bit. Both these teams have some fun players when they have room to work.

12:52 I just received an email saying I won the lottery in Spain. It was nice knowing you all…

12:39 Eboue dives in the box and is not rewarded for his poor acting.

10:45 Bakary Kone looks a bit like P Diddy. He should think about passing to his teammates instead of going one on three.

10:15 Ivory Coast in German is “Elfenbeinkuste”

9:15 If you have a chance to drink Berliner Kindl Bock beer it is highly recommended. The crowd is doing the wave. Not much happening on the pitch at this point.

7:23 I’m getting tired of those yellow referee jereseys. The refs are handing out cards like speeding tickets in this competition. So far none in this game.

6:00 About 35,000 Dutch in the crowd. They are eager to see their team advance along with Argentina. Ragged start to the game thus far with Holland having the better run.

4:45 Both teams settling the nerves a bit. Hooland with the in swinger that floats by the IC keeper and it is away without harm.

3:27 Drogba makes a run for the Elephants but he isn’t able to make the cross. Drogba looks like a man possessed this World Cup.

2:25 Holland into the box but not close. I think I got spoiled watching all those goals in the Argentina game. My guess is we will see some more in this game.

1:02 Mercifully there is no shadow today. The German commentators name is Fritz von thurn und Taxis. Seriously.

0:43
Ivory Coast has two Toure players and two Kone. That is a liveblogging nightmare.

Kickoff: We’re underway in this Group C clash with Holland trying to punch their ticket into the second round and Ivory Coast hoping to keep their World Cup dreams alive. Thanks for joining me for the game. Your comments, thoughts, jokes and jibes are always welcome. Keep ‘em clean and let’s all be friends. Cheers

Pregame

4 minute countdown: Ivory Coast’s anthem is a bit subdued but still lovely. Probably a B-minus grade. Would be higher is their players didn’t dye their hair like that.

5 minute countdown: I’d give the Dutch anthem a solid B. A bit slow for my liking but full of significance and easy to sing along to.

6 minute countdown: The teams are out on the pitch and lined up for their respective anthems. I love this moment in the game. Gives me goose bumps every time hearing the fans sing their anthems loud and proud.

8 minute countdown: The teams are lined up in the tunnel. Ivory Coast in all white and Netherlands in all orange. Van Persie is very friendly with the Elephants players. It is like he just showed up at a family reunion. The Ivory Coast players are laughing and having fun. They look loose.

10 minute countdown: A close up shot of Drogba. He looks angry and hungry. I can relate. My stomach is growling in between sips of beer. I’m liveblogging back-to-back games today so please remind me to pace myself and to eat in between matches. Thank you.

15 minute countdown: It is a sea of orange in the stadium. The Netherlands will have the 12th man on their side. Dutch fans are a lot of fun to party with as I found out a few nights ago. Ivory Coast fans scattered in the stadium. Good effort making the trip to Germany.

18 minute countdown: Johan Cruyff interviewed in German tv. He still looks pretty good. What a great player. Let’s hope we see some of his magic from both teams today.

20 minute countdow: Ruud Van Nistelrooy’s twin is discovered. I promise that is the last crack I make against Ruud unless he does something to earn the wrath.

25 minute: Both teams feature orange on their kits so keep that in mind if you are color blind or simply don’t like the color orange.

30 minute countdown: The weather in Germany today is a bit cooler with a refreshingly nice light breeze. The heat should not be a factor in this match, which is being played in Stuttgart. Perfect weather for a LiveBlog.

35 minute countdown: The two best names on this game’s rosters: Ivory Coast’s Marco Andre Kpolo Zoro and Holland’s Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink.

40 minute countdown: After a day in which the World Cup Blog Berlin HQ was without water, the H2O is back on in the loo which means the beer can be consumed so it will be. I’m looking forward to this game. Ivory Coast showed some skill against Argentina last week and they will be hungry for a win. Holland should be eager as well with a chance to advance if they gain 3 points.

Argentina is on to the next round. Will Netherlands follow suit or will Ivory Coast keep alive in the Group of Death?

Make your predictions now or forever hold your peace.

Hup Holland! It’s going to be a tough game.

  • Roslan

    Netherlands 3 Ivory Coast 1

  • SES

    3-0, Netherlands.

  • http://asd123 Peter

    I’m agree woith Roslan

    NED 3-1 Ivory Coast

  • Stuart

    Bob,

After Argentina’s disply, it’s now known as “the group of tissue”

  • http://asd123 Peter

I think NED must go to quater-finals

  • P Diddy

I cant wait to get home to watch the Argentina game, tivo is a life saver.

  • Futahaguro

It sure makes you stop and think when Argentina squishes the team that Holland only beat by 1 goal while the Ivory Coast held Argentia to 2 and scored one of their own. This should be a fun match to watch especially if the Coast can play some exciting football like they did against the Argetines.

  • paddy

Scoring a goal against Argentina now counts as three “normal” goals.
    Elephants 3-1

  • http://www.melissagalitz.com Melissa

    yep, i think 3-1 netherlands.

  • http://www.pertinentverge.blogspot.com Darkoze

Not that I don’t like the other play-by-play bloggers, but…. Bob’s the best, and having Holland An Cote de Iviore will be a lovely grist for his mill.

Now, if we can only catch a picture of the real Bob, and not that officious looking Moldavian in his bio…

  • Bobbio

I think it’s advantage to Ivory coast. They got a goal past argentina who mercilessly slaughtered the Serbians who we only managed to win 1-nil on! The African oranges are going to give the European oranges hell!

  • ETucker

I can’t wait to see the Robben vs. Toure/Eboue matchup! It is a clash of Premiership titans, and I think Toure/Eboue both have the speed and familiarity with Robben to partially contain him (he can never be stopped)

And lets not forget that Van Nistelrooy is a tad out of form.

i predict 2-1 for the Netherlands. The winner coming in the 80th minute.

  • ETucker

Pekerman didn’t make the same substitutions against Ivory Coast that he did against S&M….

plus, losing early the second game vs. first game (afer losing teh first) affects how players react. The last 3 goals were all because S&M gave up at the half

that bein said, this game will be close and very exciting. good luck to both teams and lets see some beautifl football!

  • Roland

This is a very tough game to call, but I’ll wager that Ivory Coast’s relative inexperience and the generally poor discipline of African defenses will allow Holland to win 2 – 1.

But I am not confident in that prediction, and hope for a good game. Ivory Coast is the best of the African squads, IMHO.

  • http://www.pertinentverge.blogspot.com Darkoze

Based on my previous accurate predictions, I say victory will come after 3 minutes of extended injury time play. We will all be sick of the color Orange/Oranj.

    Who’s the referee?

  • SES

The Ivory Coast team is talented and could easily put pressure on the Dutch. I would love to see the Ivory Coast score a goal and do a traditional African dance.

  • pf

Interesting how the stats don’t lie in this cup.

So far every team that lost the in the 1st game has been warming up the bus (or actually riding it).

I am curious to see if this trend continues. At least 1 match in the second round should be a surprise. If so, when will it be?

Oh, the suspense is killing me!

  • Bobbio

Ivory coast shouldn’t wear orange! They should wear IVORY! Or dress up as grey elephants with big ears tied to their heads and long wiggly trunks!

  • pf

Bobbio… perhaps the trunks that they are known for are not the visible ones….

  • SES

This is going to be a great match. I’m hoping to see a lot of energy from both teams. I’d rather it not be a “one-sided” game as that is not interesting. I’ll be cheering for both teams.

  • Futahaguro

“Bobbio… perhaps the trunks that they are known for are not the visible ones…”

Aw, come on dude! Wrong images! Reminds me of that video that was out there on this blog about some Germans big shlong popping out of his shorts. *shudder*

  • Ronaldo

Is Beckham playing in the World Cup? Cryuff – the best European player of all time! Speed, skills, kick, smarts. What else do you need?

  • Bobbio

    Ah! The infamous Bavarian bratwurst!

  • oliveskin

dutch 1-1 ivory coast . prolly dutch will sneak in one thru a header in the injury time… so prolly 2-1 in dutch favor.

  • Jango

I am waiting for an early goal by the Africans. Just wanna see how the Africans play with a lead.

  • Bobbio

3-2 for Ivory coast! I lack faith in my country!

  • hoa

    Go Elephants!

  • Welsh

It’s very obvious, ther’s no doubt the result will be 4-1 to the Elephants.

    Ivort Coast 4 Holland 1

  • ETucker

Ahh Bobbio, the torchbearer for the Dutch tradition of independent thought and self-criticism. I salute you, you elderly euthanising football fan you!

  • Ty

I don’t mind who wins… Arsenal players on both teams! So c’mon you goooners!

  • jdub

What do you do when your 3 favorite teams are in the same group?

  • http://blue2rose.blogspot.com Blah-Me

Referee.. looks like a harsh one.. Colombian Oscar Ruiz.

Go Ivory Coast. They were tough with Argentina. They ought to be good enuf in this match too.

    A 2-1 win by Netherland?

  • Jango

I am sure whoever wins it would be great exciting football.
We need more groups of death.

  • jkeep

    === liveblogging back-to-back games today

Bless you! Very grateful for yours and your colleagues services doing such.

We’ll keep an eye on your lack of pace. Can livebloggers perform ‘tactical substitutions’? ;-)

    Everyone enjoy

  • Sam

I think the Africans have gotten over their first game jitters, and their match against the (now) almighty Argentinians was nothing to be sneezed at. I think we’re going to get 2 goals for the Elephants. A goal or two for the Netherlands. So:

    Ivory Coast: 2 – Netherlands: 1

  • Jango

Drogba playing cute with his hands.

  • ETucker

Drogba looks possessed….in teh sense he is possessed by the ghost of “selfish play”

  • http://blue2rose.blogspot.com Blah-Me

Kone’s white hair is pretty cool amongst the rest on the field.

  • Sam

That was a real foul… pity he then threw himself to the ground

  • jkeep

=== Bakary Kone looks a bit like P Diddy

can’t see this game but saw NED vs SM and wondered if anyone thought Robben looks like Flea of Red Hot Chili Peppers fame?

  • tulsabob

The majority of you are obviously insane and know absolutely nothing about the beautiful game. The ivory coast had a stunning display against Argentina. I find it shocking that some of you are predicting Netherlands to win by 3 goals. It was only last weekend when Netherlands managed a pathetic 1-0 against a team who forgot that you can only win a football match by a goal. If Netherlands win it will be a close one. Please stop pretending that holland are the team they used to be. I think its going to be Holland 1 Ivory coast 1

  • Eve

This game better be a draw. I just losting betting the Argentina match!!

  • Eve

This game better be a draw. I just lost the Argentina match!!

  • Sam

    Close….

  • Eve

Agree with Tulsabob. The score will be 1:1.

  • Sam

IC are looking good out there

  • http://blue2rose.blogspot.com Blah-Me

    Tulsabob has a point there.

I’m still supporting Ivory Coast though I have a feeling that Netherlands will get a last minute second goal and win 2-1. I’d love to see the Ivory Coast make it instead.

Bob.. you wouldn’t leave this blogging for any lottery win. You know you’re addicted!!

  • Sam

    DARN!

  • Eve

    omigod! the orange guys scored!

  • tulsabob

If holland win this by 3 goals or more i’m going to look like a right prat!

THe referee sucks – There should have been a penalty kick for Ivory coast AND now again a yellow card completely undeserved –
And now 2-0 for Holland -

    I hate their shirt.

  • http://blue2rose.blogspot.com Blah-Me

    GOOOOOOOAAAAALLLL!!!

  • Sam

    WHAT!!! Oh well

  • pf

Neds are picking CIV apart one goal at a time….

    6-0 again?

What the heck is happening!?? The Elephants will soon be extinct.

    2-0

  • Eve

omigod! the orange guys scored again! what’s the chance of getting a draw out of this match??? slim…

  • Sam

The radio commentators I’m listening to keep saying:

    “I can’t belive it’s 2-nil. They don’t deserve it at all”

    Bah

  • http://www.xanga.com/oneeyeddeer Mike

Hex, my boss brought in a TV to work for the Argentina game and so i’m watchign this one live on a real TV. Sorry about your luck, man.

  • http://sports.godblessthefreaks.org Philip

TVU not working for me today. I’m afraid Windows has slipped some DRM app on my computer. :) But not if everyone else is having the problem, unless they did the auto updates.

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

What a Pair!! i mean the two goals !

  • Hex

    LOL. Good for you!!!

  • http://www.pertinentverge.blogspot.com Darkoze

Were the Dutch watching the Argentina-S&M game? Trying to show the Argies they’re not the only scoring team in the Cup.

  • Sam

IC still look like they’re playing better. I won’t be surprised with a strong counter-attack, so long as the Elephant’s spirit doesn’t break.

I think we can still manage a 2-2 tie.

  • Hex

Philip- I can’t seem to login into the TVU network.

  • djgooner

    ROBIN CAN SCORSIEEEEEE!!!!!!!!

  • http://www.xanga.com/oneeyeddeer Mike

I just checked…can’t connect to the TVU network

  • tulsabob

    I NOW LOOK RIDICULOUSLY STUPID

  • Hex

Okay. Time to find an alternative. Anyone?

  • Roland

Holy crap! I step out for a quick bite and it’s already 2 – 0?

  • http://www.xanga.com/oneeyeddeer Mike

    that was close!!!

    come on elephants!!!

  • ted paul

    Tooo close

  • Sam

    Oooohhh! So close!

  • Stuart

I’d say offsides on Ruuds goal. Oh well, it’s history now. Effective scoring for Netherlands, but uninspired play. Yawn…

  • pf

The ref is confused… that’s ok, 2 more beers I will be there too…

  • http://www.littleleadheroes.com/ The Gonk

Two terrible yellow cards. This ref sucks.

  • http://www.xanga.com/oneeyeddeer Mike

from the replay it looked like Ruud stepped back just far enough to be onside, but it was close

  • Sam

What do you mean. Replay shows clear diving

  • ted paul

I dont know about that foul on Robben

  • stampede

Don’t feel bad Tulsa Bob. You put your opinion out there so good on ya. Plus you got the coolest screen name.

6-0 this morning, 2-0 so far. I love these spankings.

  • http://blue2rose.blogspot.com Blah-Me

Tulsabob.. its still the start! Too much time to tell them off.

    Let’s wait and see.

  • Eve

i hope the orange guys will pick up a red card and then IC will hit back …. keeping my fingers crossed.

  • http://www.estoescostarica.com Poncho

    I expected more from IC…
    http://www.estoescostarica.com

  • http://www.littleleadheroes.com/ The Gonk

That wasn’t a dive, he was hit. It might have been dramatic, but the guy on his left definitely hit him.

  • Jango

Elephants will definitely score in this half.

  • http://www.xanga.com/oneeyeddeer Mike

    GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!

  • Sam

I don’t understand why people have been saying that Argentina-Netherlands will be the game to watch. This Netherlands team doesn’t look remotely matched to the Argentines.

  • Roland

2 -1 looking pretty good right now. But it looks like there’ll be more. Lots more.

  • Sam

YESSS!!!!!! 2-1! On for the comeback!

  • http://www.pertinentverge.blogspot.com Darkoze

    The Elephant Roar!

  • Eve

YES! YES! YES! Brilliant! What a strick!

  • hoa

Thunderous shot from IVC there!!! Go IVC

  • ted paul

He just flew by us. We got to get our act together!

  • http://blue2rose.blogspot.com Blah-Me

    GOOOAAALLLLL IVORY COAST!!!

    *jumps for joy*

    *togo dance*

    hehe.. muah muah!

  • Eve

Too excited and mis-spelt. It should be WHAT A STRIKE!!! my fingers are shaking….:-)

  • Roland

Ivory Coast’s speed is giving the Dutch trouble.

  • pf

I think the FIFA has a quota of yellow cards to fill this year….

  • tulsabob

    LOVELY JUBBLY

  • Jango

I say one more from the Africans.

  • http://Refs ran

This referee is ruining what could have been a good game!

  • Roland

Oh, what a stupid mistake! IC could have easily tied! Inexperience.

  • Stuart

It’s annoying that the streams are so many minutes behind the live audio, but that was a SWEET goal by Kone.

Netherlands will be lucky to escape this game, the way it’s going. Argentina are smiling.

  • Gaston

o, common drogba did not meant to kick the keeper, he tried to put his leg away

  • Jango

The Dutch are feeling the heat.
    They are being outrun.
But, thankfully for us, they are playing attacking football.

  • abercombie&fitch

why is everyone rooting for IC? Am i missing something?

  • Roland

    Because we hate white people;)

  • http://sports.godblessthefreaks.org Philip

Apparently just the presence of IC makes for a good game. Kind of like how the presence of Paraguay makes for a dull defensive battle. :)

I’m pulling for Nederland but I wouldn’t be sorry to see either of these teams go through.

  • ted paul

    This is a wild game!

  • Eve

I’m sure IVO will play better in the second half. they didnt settle well in the first 30 minutes. once they are composed, the orange guys are surely not their match. But I hope this game is a draw…

  • yogi

Woah, sounds like a great game, 3 goals for each period so far today, let’s see if they can keep up w/ the new standard

  • Roland

That’s the half, and a good one. Game should be tied.

  • http://www.littleleadheroes.com/ The Gonk

Would have been even better without the crappy ref.

  • ted paul

Roland, I think those comments are too Al Sharptonish for me.

  • nikki

Good game so far but Ivory cost will win 3-2

  • hoa

I like IVC b/c they are first time ever in the cup, they are underdogs, they play their hearts out and fearless. I do luv the attacking football style of the Dutch, but I am rooting for IVC in this game.

But IVC need to finish better in the 2nd half. The rule in soccer is very simple: if u keep attacking and cannot score, your opponents will. Hope it wont happen to IVC.

  • SES

What a great game so far. The Ivory Coast isn’t dead yet.

  • Don from Canada

    Ivory Coast 3 Holland 2

  • http://www.pertinentverge.blogspot.com Darkoze

    Tulsabob,
    Lovely Jubbly, indeed.

  • Sam

abercombie&fitch: Because IC are the underdogs, because IC play a great game, because African nations don’t usually get very far in the wold cup, because the Netherlands are boring.

Why do you sound so surprised? Why should we be routing for the Dutch?

  • Eve

Who waS the referee of Spain vs Ukraine match? They both should shake hands … equally bad. Need to check their visions.

  • pf

Bob, with all the money you won in the Spanish lottery, you could donate some of the money to FIFA which is so desperate to fix it’s budged through the yellow cards.

  • Roland

lol, C’mon – man, people can be thin skinned…

Anyway, I’ll take it as a compliment; Al Sharpton is a brilliant and witty speaker!

  • hoa

Yellow for Drogba was a bad call. That ref should get a Red card from FIFA(unfortunately, they dont have this rule yet!)

  • ETucker

Newsflash: The Spanish lotter is not like the US where one individaul wins millions of dollars. Rather, thousands of people win thousands of dollars.

I bet you won just enough to cover your airfare home from Germany.

Welcome to socialism at it’s finest!

Based on the scattered information you’d provided in your blogging to date and, being unaware of the amount of the winnings, I think the most responsbile thing to do is to buy your beloved Togo.
    The whole country.
    Including the team.
Then, you can be Master of your own Football Universe.

  • Melong

    Buddy,

Give the money to me. I will make good use of it. Go to Vegas and squander it.

    LOL

The game is interesting and you are doing a fantastic job.

    Peace.

  • Stuart

Unless Nethelands decide to play, or get some breaks on some set stuff, IC is pulling this one out. I must say I’m disappointed, I was expecting a better tournament from the Dutch than they’ve given these two games.

  • Eve

oh no it’s almost 1am here… the dark dark eyebags will stay for some time … good for you guys, dont need to fight the sleepy bugs and struggle to get up for work the next day. May be you do struggle but not as tough as those of us who are watching the matches past midnight.

  • Bobbio

IVC have to score 2 goals this half for my 3-2 prediction to turn out true!

  • Takeshi

Wow, solid effort from IC. I’m impressed that IC was able to break through Neth to get that goal. Very exciting first half.

  • http://www.pertinentverge.blogspot.com Darkoze

    …Ted Paul,
my last comment was made with tongue firmly implanted in cheek…no offense intended to the booming economy and organizational skills of Togo.

  • Sam

Ach, tough luck Eve. Get some sleep! You’ll find out the score in the morning.

  • Futahaguro

I don’t think I can agree with that Yellow on Drogba. He planted the foot so it was harder to get it out of the way. Now he will miss the next match which, if things fall their way, could be a huge blow to them.

I don’t necessarily root for one team or the other, it would be great to see either make it, I like all three contenders from this group.

  • Roland

Hey Eve, now you know what we Yanks went through four years ago!

  • Ubi

The last two goals scored were amazing, i snuck out of work to watch them now im going to go watch the second half. HAHA I hope i dont get caught.

  • Eve

True. I watched those games comfortably at a pub…

  • ted paul

The problem I have is that if I said I am rootng for the Dutch because they are white I would be castigated for racism, but if a black roots for IC because of race its OK. Much like NAACP is OK but NAAWP is considered racist. Thats why I feel the standards should be equal.

  • BC

Bob, your stern-looking photo belies your hilarious blog commentary. Nice work!

  • Ubi

uhh ted paul your a gay.

  • pf

Yeah, I remeber 2002… it sucked to be up in the middle of the night high on caffeine and booze.

  • Sam

Oh please. No one’s saying that if a white person roots for the Dutch their racist. where on earth did you get that idea? People can root for whomever they choose.

  • Sam

Oh wait, re-reading your comment. If you say you are rooting for the Dutch because they are white, then yes, you are certainly a racist. And I don’t think there’s a double-standard

  • Bobbio

OMG I am ORANGE! Who should I root for???

  • Eve

I’m yellow but I am rooting for the blacks. Besides Argentina, I’ve always rooted for the black guys. I love attacking football!!!

  • Ubi

    preach it brother sam

  • Roland

Ted, who is rooting for the Ivory Coast on this blog because they’re black? I wasn’t aware you could detect the color of a person from their post. That’s quite a trick.

Relax buddy, it’s just the phenomenon of the underdog, nothing more. And I did predict a Netherlands win, after all…

  • Sam

Anyway, the second half has started. Forget this talk and let’s watch some great football!

  • http://blue2rose.blogspot.com Blah-Me

Bob.. you ought to buy me a portable television where I can watch the rest of the matches on. Thank you so much for that in advance!

As for the refs.. I say the WC should have a yellow card limit. So they cant exceed it!! :@

  • Eve

And Argentina ! Oh they are playing fabulously… they are going to be in the final, I bet.

  • Ubi

    Rooooooooooollllaaaannnnnddddddd
    Rooooooooooollllaaaannnnnddddddd
    Rooooooooooollllaaaannnnnddddddd
    Rooooooooooollllaaaannnnnddddddd

  • ETucker

Ted Paul, your claim overlooks the fact that society in general is basically the NAAWP.

That’s why people had to create teh NAACP in the first place.

It’s not like you or your parents couldn’t sit on a bus or drink from a water fountain because of your pale skin!

  • ted paul

I will only relax if the Dutch win.

  • ted paul

    Van der Vaart!!!!

  • http://blue2rose.blogspot.com Blah-Me

“This referee is a camera hog. He is calling everything including phantom fouls. His arm might fall off with all the times he has lifted it to show yellow cards.”

If anything, that could only be an under-statement. I couldnt agree more.

  • http://www.pertinentverge.blogspot.com Darkoze

Went to a fight and a hockey game broke out.

Went to a World Cup Liveblog and a Race Relations Forum Formed.

  • Roland

Bob, I agree with you about Holland – next cup they’ll be something.

  • ted paul

Not these days with affirmative action

  • hoa

Why a Dutch name usu has a “Van”, everyone know?

  • Tom

Can we just not do the race talk thing? Keep it centered on soccer/World Cup. Thanks.

  • http://blue2rose.blogspot.com Blah-Me

hoa.. do we have to beg for the answer?

    I have no idea.

  • Roland

For a ref who’s calling a lot he sure missed that foul.

  • Laura

Spanish lottery, eh? Sounds like you should take your good friends to dinner at a fabulous Indian restaurant in Vancouver BC!

  • Tom

Van means of in Dutch. So it’s like me saying my name is Van Der Pennsylvania. I am of (from) Pennsylvania.

  • ted paul

Yes Roland, Holland will be better in four years.

  • Roland

Ivory Coast reaching almost at will. Holland better tighten up.

  • pf

Isn’t van the equvalent of von in german? As in OF.

    Ref OF Yellowcarders
    Ref Von Yellowcard

  • pwnawannab

I think (not confident though) that “Van” can mean as “of” as in Robin “of” Persie. Correct me if I am wrong.

  • Tom

    Little late guys. ;)

  • Ubi

dont make fun of indian people im pakistani. and i dont smell!

  • Laura

What’s that magic spray about anyway? Pressurized Evian, topical anesthetic, or?

  • ted paul

Klaas Jan Huntelaar will be on the team

  • sandeep

this is not fair common ivory coast got a tugh group and then now suddenly ducth are showing the ugly side commiting fouls and all

  • stampede

Is there a magic spray for the Serbs’ asses?

  • http://www.pertinentverge.blogspot.com Darkoze

    pf,
    You most certainly are
    Full Van Wit.

  • sooz

Bob: I think that consistency in refereeing was represented well by Michel (slovakia) in yesterday’s beautiful sweden-paraguay game, who I remember from confed cup matches. this ref should take a page from his book.

  • Tom

I think he means the magic spray is just that: “magic.” A lot of these guys go down and fake it in hopes of a penalty. The ref can make them get carted off on a stretcher, but they magically come back in fine form moments later.

  • http://www.pertinentverge.blogspot.com Darkoze

    Bob,
Jerko Leko does have your number and will be inviting you for a drink.

  • Sam

Bad sportsmanship. Even if a player is fouled, they should never ask for a booking. That’s just not right.

  • Curt

Just want to thank you peeps for the live blog and the comments. For us poor folks who have to work this is the best place I have found to stay in touch.

  • http://blue2rose.blogspot.com Blah-Me

Laura.. I thought the magic spray was Deep heat?!

Ubi.. neat you’re paki! And you’re defending indians? :) I ought to be doing that though. But thanks.

  • ted paul

    Robben needs to pass more

  • Ubi

dont make fun of injuries they are serious business. You can get crazy whiplash from the wiff of air coming off those legs. That magic spray is a godsend.

  • ted paul

Watch Van der Vaart guys. I feel he will be in on a goal. This guy is no slouch.

  • Full Van Wit, aka. pf

Following Bob’s steps, I hope to be

Fuul Van Bier by the way we hit Mex – Ang match.

    ;)

  • Roland

Ronaldo must still be at the buffet we haven’t been graced by his scintillating commentary recently…

  • Sam

Boy is this ref trigger happy!

  • Tom

What’s the tempo of the game like? Not being able to see it, it’s tough to tell. Is the ball primarily in CI’s half? Or is it pretty even?

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

i missed much of this match..how are the Dutch? title material ?

  • Sam

    Aww…. nearly!

  • Roland

Pretty even. Lot’s of back and forth. I’d say IC has had the better of it this half, but not by much.

  • Takeshi

Thanks for the reminder at 64:03. I’m stuck at work with no beer. I need a beer…I’ll even suffice with the last few drops of your crappy German beer.

Canada makes the best beer in the world, by the way.

  • http://blue2rose.blogspot.com Blah-Me

Roland.. is the Ronaldo guy’s name actually “Ronaldo”?

  • Sam

Mohan: I don’t think so at all. They’re lucky to be ahead

  • Ubi

haha this ref is going to put these two teams in debt with all the yellow card fines.

  • Roland

IC defense severely tested there….now on counterattack.

  • ted paul

    We blew a chance.

  • Ubi

    Tkeshi is right.

  • pf

    did I say

by the way we hit Mex – Ang…

I mean by the time we hit Mex – Ang

    (**hicup**)

  • Roland

    Blah-Me, who knows?

  • Luc

This match just proves how african’s just aren’t build up people. There’s no planning to their game, it’s just, get the ball, run at the goal and give it all you’ve got. Probably the reason why they’re all really poor still.

  • ted paul

    Nice try vd Vaart

  • Ubi

How much money does the winning team of the WC get.

  • Roland

No Luc, the problem with typical African squads is that they tend to lose discipline over the course of a game, especially on defense.

  • Ubi

Luc, that was a low blow man I think you should take that back.

  • Luc

if you are from Saudi Arabia, your government buys you a Rolls Royce for scoring a goal

  • ted paul

Luc. Those comments are too Pat Buchannish for me

  • Luc

Nah it’s not a low blow, its exciting football, no doubt, but it’s very undisciplined and unstructured. I dunno, I like watching it, but I wouldn’t want Ivory Coast to be my national team. They’re all talented players, but the score could be anything, it could be Netherlands 2, Cote d’ivoir 10

  • abercombie&fitch

what’s a “typical african squad” Roland?

  • Roland

lol, hey now Ted, let’s leave my boy Pat out of this, lol…

  • pwnawannab

    $250,000,000?

  • http://blue2rose.blogspot.com Blah-Me

Isnt his name something “rooy”? Beats me. Maybe I’m wrong.

Luc.. that was plain mean and uncalled for!! You need to clean that up!

Roland.. oh! I thought you’d know. *shrugs* I’m curious. Maybe he is related.

  • ted paul

Roland at least I am consistant

  • Sam

Ignore trolls like Luc and concentrate on the beautiful game.

Except my radio seems to quit on me…

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

dutch were impressive in the previous match Sam

  • Luc

by the way, i dont even really know anything about Pat Buchanan, and I have nothing to do with internal American politics, it’s only the state department, president, treasury, nsc and military that have any effect on the way my government behaves, but this is about the ivory coast and their lack of build up. hah.

  • Takeshi

Hey Ubi…you wouldn’t happen to live in Montreal would ya?

  • ted paul

I am watching on a LCD 50″ high def. Ammaaazing.

  • Luc

what, I’m a troll because I find that the Ivory Coast just doesnt build up. ??? Geez, are we all cliquey high schoolers. God forbid I have a valid opinion.

  • Roland

abercombie&fitch, my comment is by necessity a generalization, but let’s look at the last five minutes of Tunisia – Saudi Arabia. Pretty classic case of a total breakdown in discipline to me. Togo, Ghana, and Angola are the same. Ivory Coast is the best of the lot, and would beat all the others put tother.

  • Luc

Saudi Arabia is an AFC member, not African.

  • pwnawannab

    der = that

  • Raybron

Dutch are so lucky. What a crap match they’ve had and they’ve had every benefit, especially from the refs. Can’t wait to see Argentina annihilate them.

  • Sam

No, you’re a troll because you tried to incite argument by saying all Africans are poor because they are undisciplined, unstructured, and “tend to just run at the goal” every time they get the ball.

  • ted paul

Dutch are on the defensive, need to get act together

  • Luc

No, you’re a troll because you tried to incite argument by saying all Africans are poor because they are undisciplined, unstructured, and “tend to just run at the goal” every time they get the ball.

    - yeah, but you know, deep down, in your black little heart, that I am pretty much right. Are you watching this game?

  • Roland

Luc, so what? It’s just my opinion anyway, nothing against the Africans.

  • Takeshi

    >> ted paul | June 16th, 2006 at >> 7:32 pm

    >> I am watching on a LCD 50″ high >> def. Ammaaazing.

I hate you ted. I hate you like I hate bad beer.

  • Luc

nah I think the africans are awesome to watch! hahah. im lovin every minute of it

  • Roland

    Luc, for once we agree;)

  • http://www.estoescostarica.com Poncho
  • Luc

im sure we agree on a lot of things, just a lotta people find the way I say it a bit blunt *sad*

  • Ronaldo

    Blah me:

Not only my name is Ronaldo but I have the belly to prove it. The Dutch are on to the second round and they area always dangerous. I would not want to play them. I rather play England.

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

the stats show that Ivory Coast took 15 shots at the goal against Dutch 7

  • Luc

p.s. has anyone ever seen so many yellow cards being handed out?

  • ted paul

Takeshi- you can see the blades of grass

  • Ubi

Takeshi Im close I live in Ottawa, but i met this girl from Montreal I might go see her on the long weekend.

  • Jango

The referee seems to holding the card in the palm of his hand instead of putting the card in his pocket.

  • Stuart

Good think Netherlands are practicing in their half, they’ll need it against Argentina.

  • http://blue2rose.blogspot.com Blah-Me

Luc.. your opinions on the game are always welcome.

But throwing comments such as “Probably the reason why they’re all really poor still.” is simply out-rageous.

You ought to take that back. So out of place.

  • Luc

Just proves how irrelevant FIFA world rankings can be. Remember Czech vs USA that’s #2 vs #5, and the Czechs were from another planet.

    Holland #3, Ivory Coast, #32.

Makes you wonder where countries like England fit into the scheme of things. I hope Ivory Coast get a draw.

  • Roland

I predict the last 5 minutes will be breathtaking to watch.

  • Raybron

I don’t see the Dutch doing anything in the next round. They looked very unimpressive against SM (especially after watching Argentina’s effortless clinic today) and they had two excellent goals here but have done very little to show me that they can do much in the next round. Their performance against Argentina will tell us a lot about them; I’m certainly not averse to having my mind changed.

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

Ivory Coast is unlucky to be knocked out despite playing so well against teams like Argentina and Netherlands

  • Luc

ok, I am sorry to all Africans who are poor .

  • Takeshi

ted paul – GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR…I’m so super jealous. You’re the kind of guy I’d be friends with just to be invited to come over and watch the game on the big screen (the American way – use and abuse). Haha!

  • hoa

Everyone here think USA can get a win tomorrow?
if they do I think the ESPN2 guys will go nut.

  • Takeshi

Ubi – oh, I thought you might work for UbiSoft in Montreal. In which case, I would have asked you to hook me up with a job.

  • Jango

I think the Dutch will save their lead.
The elephants seem to be trying too hard.

  • ted paul

I hope the US beats Italy, big time.

  • http://blue2rose.blogspot.com Blah-Me

    Ronaldo..

Welcome back. Lol. Did your parents name you after “Ronaldo” the Brazilian player? Or is that just a coincidence? Are you Brazilian even?

  • Luc

I don’t think that the USA will beat Italy. no, sorry hoa.

  • pf

    hoa.

IMHO, espn guys are nuts regardless….

  • Tom

Italy will play for a win against the US and a draw against Czech. So, no, I think the US is out of luck…

  • Eve

Why IVO finishing so bad? They do take chances well.:-(

  • Roland

    Hoa – No.

  • Ronaldo

Can anybody wake up Bruce for me please?

  • Takeshi

I don’t think the US will make it very far in the tourny. But I must give them respect for making a huge advance in this year’s world standings.

  • Eve

The Dutch going to win…oh no…

  • Roland

    Less than two minutes…

  • Maura

man the espn announcers stink. the explanation of stoppage time was terrible.

  • ted paul

    This game is not over

  • http://blue2rose.blogspot.com Blah-Me

    :) Luc…

  • Bobbio

oh well. Ivory coast are out. But by golly they were the best of all the evictees of the first round!

  • Tom

I’d like to see IC tie it, but it’s not going to happen. Oh well.

I’d also like to see the US put up a decent game against Italy, but Italy’s defense is pretty damned strong. If Italy can grab an early goal against the US squad it’s lights out.

  • Eve

Can IVO give me a draw?

  • Luc

nah its going to be IC ftw with a last minute 2 goals, like everyone else

  • Eve

All their corners so badly taken!

  • Roland

    IC pressuring furiously.

  • Roland

    40 seconds

  • ted paul

    Dutch crossing fingers

  • Trish

a lot can happen in 30 seconds, come on IC

  • Ubi

    Hoa
It doesnt matter who wins cause the games going to be awsome the ESPN commentating is going to be biased and hopefully im going to be drunk. HAZAAAAA!

  • Eve

My throat so sore!!! whistle may blow anytime…

  • Luc

OMG FINAL FREE KICK FOR THE DRAW, AND ANOTHER YELLOW CARD HAHAHA

  • Roland

Ref giving them a final free kick.

  • Jango

What a moron is this referee !!!!!!!!!!!!

  • pf

    This ref is yellow crazed!!!!

  • Ronaldo

I am afraid to reveal my identity. Sam… I mean – Riquelme’s love interest, may send his possee.

    Cuban, grew up in Argentina.

  • Roland

    That’s it. Congratulations Orange.

  • Bobbio

It’s over! 2-1!! Phew! What a lucky break for NL.

  • Eve

Shit!!! cant stand it. Lost another game…

  • Ubi

the refs got “yellow” fever. Shat uppppppp i liked it.

  • http://blue2rose.blogspot.com Blah-Me

    2-1

IVC tried really hard. Played VERY well. :)

    Congrats to Holland!!

  • Tom

Ugh…Argentina/Netherlands match will be a bore now.

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

glory in defeat for Ivory Coast !

  • Roland

Umm, I’m doing pretty well this cup:)

  • Don from Canada

should have been a 1-1- tie…offside goal. Too bad for IC

  • Aldo

I love Ivory Cost! They deserve the second round!

  • Ubi

Good job IVC, they deserve something for playing so hard and so well I think their should be a losing trophy and each of the players should get a goat.

  • hoa

Good effort from IVC, but the Dutch is a better team. But I dont think they can defeat Argentina for the first spot.

  • Ubi

    there not their

  • Eve

no luck! hope argentina will beat the orange guys… I dont like them!

  • Sam

Oh well. The australian comentators I’m listening to keep insisting that IC played better, but all that matters is the final score.

  • Roland

Ivory Coast impressed me. They would have advanced if not for the group of death.

Oh well, Tunisia still has hope for you African team fans. Me, I’ll be rooting for Spain to disintigrate them;)

See you next match. !Viva Mexico!

  • paddy

    Football is a cruel game.
The Dutch can count themselves lucky.
Don’t fancy their chances against Argentina.

Gallant lovely elephants deserved at least a draw.

  • ted paul

Roland, if you are still here, lets smoke a peace pipe.
    And go USA vs Italy!

  • Eve

IVC lost so many chances!!! their corners and free kicks were taken so badly…

    * shake head* in disbelief

  • Sam

Eve, you’re still awake? Get some sleep!

  • Eve

Yes IVC deserved a draw but they threw it away!!!

  • Aaron Orlowski

What a crappy deal dealt to the Ivory Coast. The Netherlands should have picked up at least 2 more yellow cards if not a red card with all of their clutching and grabbing and triiping and kicking to the shins of the Ivory Coast players. That referee was terrible. The Ivory Coast did not deserve 2 of the yellow cards they did recieve, what a crock. Call the game fair FIFA!!

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

Now that IC has gone out, what are the Dutch chances? How far would they go ?

  • ted paul

Dutch will have to stop wilting in the second half if they want to go far in the tourney

  • Roland

Oh yeah, you Canadians and your pipes. Pack two for me.

  • Eve

yes yes am going to sleep… good that I dont have to work tomorrow but will save energy to watch repeat telecast for the mexico match and not forgetting the next few matches coming up…

  • ted paul

Your my man Roland. And dont forget to vote Republican this November.

  • Eve

The Dutch wont go beyond Group 16.

  • Aaron Orlowski

    Argentina goin’ all the way!!

Aww…Ivory Coast deserved at least a draw. They were fantastic. :’(

  • Eve

    Nite nite, Sam.

  • Aaron Orlowski

agree with eve, Dutch get sunk in first game of 16

  • Roland

It was inevitable at a Dutch match.

  • Eve

YES! YES! Argentina will go all the way! :-)

  • ted paul

Roland, see you on the US live blog tomorrow vs Italia

    LET’S GO OILERS!!!!!

  • ab initio

The Dutch will most likely play Portugal in the next round and should get through to the qtr finals.

This was a hard fought game with Ivory Coast really making a go of it. The Elephants have great talent but they lacked the final finish.

Very entertaining though. Let’s see what Angola does with Mexico.

The only thing worse than seeing a bad team win is to see a good team loose. It’s a loss to all football fans to see Ivory Coast out of the cup. They have my genuine respect.

  • Aaron Orlowski

ivory coast played the better, and the CLEANER game was the better team and probably would have won if not for crappy officiating by that referee, I think he was wearing orange underneath his jersey!!

  • Mcthingy2

The Dutch were very lucky. Sad to see Ivory Coast go out even though Drogba is the most over-rated player in the world and Eboue is the biggest diver on the planet.

Kone was fantastic before he went off. Still, another exciting game under our belt……turning into best World Cup in ages.

    LET”S GO OILERS!!!

  • http://aol Robert

You can’t but love the extra the Dutch fans bring to each game; it looks like 1974 all over again, when Holland was clearly the best team. As an ex-Dutchman, I am excited about Holland moving on to the next round, yet I am afraid they are not of the quality of say Argentina, Germany, or Brazil,
    Robert

Aaron — agree that referee was a shocker. Self-important whistle happy nonce. And Van Bommel should have been sent off for all the kicking he was doing. The Dutch might rival the Aussies as the most dirty team in the tournament. Their defenders are brutal.

  • Fiejoow

Ivory Coast were pretty good, but Holland was just a bit better….

  • Halito

Probably the best game of the tourney so far, in terms of creativity, energy, and competitiveness. I was rooting for IC but I agree–the Dutch earned the vistory.

  • alternababe

If the Dutch play the Portuguese it’s the Netherlands going on to the final 16. Their defense is superb, and they don’t settle for defensive playing even when they’re in the lead.

  • alternababe

Err sorry, I meant final 8/quarterfinals.

  • govjaguar

THE REFEREE SHOULD BE KICKED OUT OF FIFA!!…..HOW CAN HE IGNORE THE FOUL BY NETHERLANDS WHICH PREVENTED IVORY COAST FROM A PENALTY…HOW CAN HE GIVE 2 YELLOW CARDS TO TOTALLY INNOCENT PLAYERS….EVEN THE ESPN COMMENATATOR AND EXPERT PANEL FIRMLY OPPOSED THE REFEREE…THIS IS VERY SAD…IVORY COAST MUST BE PROUD OF THEMSELVES….GR8 TEAM.

  • Hudibras

TERRIBLE REFFEREE, the worst ive seen all cup. robbed opportunities for ivory coast, and terrible yeloow cards and every decision was terrible.
    terrible.

Totally agree, FIFA needs to fire the referee. How blatant could his “no calls” be, and how blatantly obvious that the Ivory Coast players did nothing to deserve those first 2 yellow cards. He robbed the Ivory Coast of the opportunity to win as far as I am concerned. They had to battle the Dutch and the ref the whole way!!

  • CTL

Holland’s Mark van Bommel is the dirtiest player I’ve ever seen – worse than van Nistelrooy, Rooney, Maradona and Simeone combined.

Did anyone see how he dived to get a Ivorian player booked? Or how how he stomped on the leg of Boka? Its amazing that the referee missed all that (he’s a genius at covering his tracks!)

Whether he’s playing for PSV Eindhoven, Barcelona or Holland, Mark van Bommel is a disgusting player who has no place in the “beautiful game”.
