LiveBlog: France-South Korea

A late equaliser for Korea secures another point, but France needed a win. Some controversy around a French goal that never was and Zidane picked up an odd booking so misses the final group game. Unless France progress this was his last ever football match.

Live: France 1-1 South Korea

-Thanks to everyone for stopping by. Not the best game for 80 minuts but it picked up a bit toward the end. Great comments, I learned the following things:

  • The difference between a cockerel, a rooster and a chicken
  • The origins of the cockerel as a French symbol
  • The origin and meaning of the Korean flag
  • To order kim chi sometime soon

-That was-it-over-the-line goal/not goal looks even more controversial now.

93:00 Full time. 1-1. Oh dear.

92:30 Korea passing sharply. Win a free kick on the edge of France’s area. The French are in ruins. Ahn strikes it wide, but only just.

90:00 3 minute of injury time. Zidane off for Trezeguet. That could be the last time you see him on a footy field.

89:00 France attacking but it could be all too late. Barthez drops a cross! What a clown. Recovers it though. Still a clown. He was flapping at the ball for the Korea goal too.

88:00 Henry just misses with a diving header. Offside though.

87:30 Dhorousa on for Malouda. Barthez up to his usual tricks.

86:32 Korean defender misses a clearance, Ribery lifts it over his head then shoots, blocked. Good skills though. Zidane’s corner headed over by Henry.

86:00 That didn’t deserve a card did it?

84:30 Zidane tackles hard to win the ball and plays Henry through. Keeper saves at his feet. Zidane booked for tackle. Now he’ll miss the last game. This could be Zidane’s last game. The horror, the horror.

84:00 Kim Nan Il receiving treatment on the stretcher. Korea have no more subs so they’re down to 10 men.

83:00 Korean fans are jubilant. I wonder if that woman will the nails is celebrating. I’ll bet the Staples Center is going crazy.

81:00 Vieira shoots very very high. If any rugby or NFL fans are reading, that was 3 points.

80:00 Park Ji Sung sliced it over Barthez from close range. Kimchi all round.

80:00 GGOOOAAALLLLL!! Korea equalise!

79:40 Lee Young Pyo proves Zidane is no defender, beating him with relative ease. Maybe a bit late in the career for Zidane to work on his defensive play?

78:30 Abidal with a late clumsy tackle. Booking. And he’ll miss the Togo match now.

77:35 John Harkes atones for Dellacamera’s earlier mistake (see 46:00).

76:12 Ribery turns and plays a great ball through, suggesting he might actually be a decent player after all. Just too long though (the ball not Ribery).

74:39 Henry nutmegs a defender but loses the ball. Not enough nutmegs at this World Cup so far.

73:13 Sagnol getting forward. Couple of stepovers and a cross, but no one there. Resulting corner cleared with a diving header. Excitement! Malouda strikes it over the bar. Has he got his boots on the wrong feet or what?

71:14 Ahn set to come on soon. Korea running out of time. Ahn Jung Hwan finally gets on the field. Why so late?

68:23 Lee Ho out injured. Kim Sang Sik is in. Great, great name. Could be a children’s story about a little girl (Kim, obviously) who overcomes some form of illness (let’s say laryngitis) to perform in the school musical (let’s say “Annie”).

67:22 Korea need to make a change and step things up a bit. How about Ahn, who scored against Togo?

65:00 Zidane dictating some French passing play. Remember, he’s finished with football once France are out. Enjoy the old fella while you can.

63:40 Corner nearly falls for Gallas at the far post, but it’s juts too far in front of him. Zidane might go the full 90, unless France score a second.

62:48 Ribery does well to dribble at the top of the box, France hold possession until Sagnol shoots. Hits Korean defender in the arm. Ball to hand though.

61:28 Korea passing it around, but going nowhere. France looks pretty organised and not too easy to break down.

59:28 Ribery replacing Wiltord for France. Wiltord has’t done too bdaly all in all. Ribery needs to impress after the Swiss game.

58:45 Long ball nearly finds Jae Jin. His shoulder looks better, but he can’t reach it.

57:34 Wiltord dribbles around the top of the box (maybe he’s not so bad after all) before squaring to Malouda. Malouda shoots wide. Wonder if Domenech is thinking about subs…

56:40 Jae Jin landed on his shoulder. Ouch. Looks like it’s giving him some trouble.

55:45 Vieira heads a cross straight at the keeper from close range.

55:00 Vieira nails Kim Nam Il. Not intentional he’s juts much bigger and much stronger.

53:42 Apparently there are 20,000 Korea fans at the Staples Center stadium in LA to watch the game on a screen. Good work.

52:00 Wiltord with a shot just wide. Still don’t rate him.

51:00 Cho chases a long ball down the middle but Barthez beats him to it. Collects with his hands as opposed to trying the tricks with his feet that cost him the Man Utd gig.

49:00 Korea trying a bit of attacking early second half. Still not really getting in behind France though.

46:00 I’ve got my wish. Seol is on. Unfortunately JP Dellacamera on ABC says Seol plays for “Wolverhampton Wolves” as opposed to my beloved Wolverhampton Wanderers. Maybe Seol had a recent transfer I don’t know about?

45:00 Second half underway.

-Still image shows ball was more or less definitely over the line. Lee’s feet are behind the goal line and he’s leaning back to make the save.

-I’d like to see number 10 Park Chu Young on for Korea, or possibly number 11 Seol Ki Hyeon. Park because he’s a young striker who’s meant to be a bit special, Seol because he plays for my beloved Wolvehampton Wanderers.

-For anyone who missed the link in the comments section, here’s the bird:

Half time France won’t be too unhappy about that. Korea need a change of plan for the second half. I’m off to boil the kettle for a cuppa.

45+2 It is magic, Abidal is back on the pitch.

45+1 Magic sponge being applied. Is it really magic? We’ll find out.

45:00 Eric Abidal (French left back) down and holding the back of his left knee, or possibly his calf. Doesn’t look good for him.

43:11 Three Korean ladies looking bored there. The lady on the left looked like she was drying her nails. Or maybe she was nervous, hard to tell. She’s either really into it, or doesn’t care at all.

42:00 Korea dropping off, letting France pass it around. Maybe waiting to spring a counter attack?

40:25 Great work from Henry, taking it to Korea and trying to force a one-two that only just doesn’t come off.

38:31 To clear up any debate about sensors in the ball: no there isn’t. It was tried at an U-17 Championship and the decision was that it needed more time and testing before being used in a major tournament.

37:00 Great Korean free kick from deep misses everyone but bounces just wide. Barthez didn’t necessarily have it covered.

33:30Another replay suggests it was over the line. ESPN commentators complaining about the quality of the world feed. Oh the irony.

32:00 Lee Ho limps off, looks bad. Were France denied a legitimate goal? Replay very inconclusive.

31:30 Vieira header from Zidane’s corner saved BEHIND THE LINE (maybe) by Korean keeper.

30:00 But then Henry wins a free kick to prove me wrong. Zidane takes, bounces off Korean defender for corner.

29:00 Replay of Henry tumble not convincing. Ref was right. I heard rumours Spike Lee was going to make an actor out of him. Not sure there’s much to work with after that.

28:00 Kim Dong-Jin (one of Korea’s many Kims) booked for a rough tackle.

27:20 Henry goes down in the box, referee doesn’t react.

26:14 Wiltord having a laugh if he thinks Henry and Zidane are going to let him take it. He’s waved away by his teammates. Henry takes it in the end but no good.

25:00 France direct free kick. Six players standing around, wanting to take it.

24:24 Zidane with a nice rolled backheel pass down the line, but goes for a throw. He’s still great to watch on the ball, even if he’s lost a yard or ten of pace.

24:00 1-0. Korea no shots on goal yet.

23:00 Still, would have been another French player on the score sheet…

21:51 Daryl back on for Bob. It’s like tag team wrestling. Gallas headed high at his own goal, nearly very embarrassing for him, but just over.

19:31 Henry takes a knock but appears to be ok. He should remember the goal and it will make him feel better.

18:30 By the way this is Bob on for Daryl whose computer apparently has died. A first in Liveblogging history as I come off the bench.

17:12 France continuing to control the action as South Korea not able to mount the attack.

11:22 France looking confident now. Zidane with a stepover and shot, but wide. Second viewing of Henry goal reveals Wiltord didn’t pass, he shot and it was deflected into Henry’s path.

8:45 GOOAAAL! Henry scores. Open the red wine, the eight year drought is over. Wiltord played a short pass, Henry took one touch and placed it beyond the keeper. Made it look easy.

6:00 Henry sends Wiltord through, keeper blocks his shot. Malouda shoots very wide. I wouldn’t rely on Wiltord for goals.

5:30 One day, every World Cup team will be coached by a Dutchman.

4:00 Crowd sounds nice and lively. Half chance for Henry, but cleared. It will be half-funny half-sad if they don’t score in this World Cup either.

1:00 No Ribery. He was dreadful against the Swiss.

0:00 We have kick off.

-So was it a rooster, a chicken or a cockerill? What’s the difference and how can we tell?

-Korean anthem not so exciting. I like faster paced anthems.

-One French supporter had a cockerill. How did he sneak that past security?

-National anthems. The French one always makes me think of that scene in “Casablanca.” If you don’t know what I’m talking about then go rent it.

-Is anyone elese surprised that Wiltord got the nod again? He wasn’t looking too good against Switzerland.

-Line ups:

France

* 16 F Barthez
* 03 E Abidal
* 05 W Gallas
* 15 L Thuram
* 19 W Sagnol
* 07 F Malouda
* 04 P Vieira
* 06 C Makelele
* 10 Z Zidane
* 11 S Wiltord
* 12 T Henry

Korea

* 01 W Lee
* 02 Y Kim
* 03 D Kim
* 04 J Choi
* 12 Y Lee
* 05 N Kim
* 07 J Park
* 13 E Lee
* 17 H Lee
* 14 C Lee
* 19 J Cho

-Are we writing off France too early? Surely with players like Henry and Vieira they’re capable of getting it together…

-25 minutes till kick off. Can France finally score today?

Pregame: An interesting match. Who do you think will come out on top?

  • AJ

Every team has ugly players except for Italy.

  • http://stephenmalkmus.livejournal.com bates

in response to the ‘how can we tell’ question, according to wikipedia: a cockerel is a young rooster. a rooster is a male chicken, meaning it’s larger, has a comb and wattle (the red things on their head/chin), and in the mornings they say ‘cock-a-doodle-doo. a chicken is either sex, but it’s usually used as a term for a female, which means it is smaller, has a smaller wattle and comb, and instead of crowing, it sleeps in the morning. thanks.

  • AJ

Lee to Kim to Lee to Kim to Lee-Kim to Kim-Lee

  • AJ

I hope all the former winners advance to the next round. That will make it fun.

  • Roland

Absolutely. The Koreans are very disciplined and patient.

  • http://sports.godblessthefreaks.org Philip

Ah, i’d forgotten how much i missed that “Oooooh, Kor-e-a!” song their supporters sing.

  • Ali Siddiqui

I agree Philip! After hearing that cheer back in 2002 I missed it. Very beautiful to hear.

  • SydWest

so the French finally decide to score well, if the (insert really offensive word here) French could have done that last game I wouldnt have lost$200 I hope they lose and go home ashamed

  • Julian

    Hi,

I was at a Korean game recently. Can someone please tell me the words of the fans’ chants in Korean and English please?

    Thanks.

  • http://www.atmysports.com jack

yes it has to be fun with all the hot teams who will keep us on the edge of the seats, waiting for second stage with 16 teams to play

  • Titi

Folks its an all black squad for France.

  • AJ

Who cares? France is playing well

  • Ali Siddiqui

Hmm. The Koreans seem to enjoy sitting tight with a 0 so far. :?

  • Sal

Domenech looks like he should be teaching biology class

  • Sal

Looks like Zidane is trying to grow some hair. Didn’t know he had any.

  • AJ

Henry having a solid game taken down outside the box.

  • Ali Siddiqui

Zidane makes male pattern baldness look cool.

  • http://www.atmysports.com jack

i guess there is lotta support for koreans than france in the stadium

  • Titi

Thats why the African teams are not doing well because they are all naturalised citizens of othe countries.

  • Ali Siddiqui
  • Roland

    I like this reffing crew.

  • AJ

Hey Titi – Ghana did alright yesterday. Angola is alive. Tunisia is alive. Stop with the silly remarks.

  • Trav

Damn! Firewall at work won’t let me listen to the live audio. Thankfully I have all of you….

  • http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/worldcupfan/ dw

I’m trying the ABC coverage. Looks like the picture and sound are brighter than they were in the first games.

Too bad the commentators aren’t brighter.

  • Sal

Impressive pic of the rooster. Nice find Ali :-)

  • Ali Siddiqui

:D Thanks Sal. I wonder how he got it past security…in his pants? O_o

  • http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/worldcupfan/ dw

    “I like this reffing crew.”

I do too. They’re fair and they’re not inserting themselves into the game.

  • Alessandro

    THERE SHOULD BE 2 – 0…

  • AJ

Henry spending a lot of time on the ground. Zidane with lots of free kicks. Flashbacks to the days gone by.

  • Roland

    ooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

  • AJ

France header goes over the line but isn’t called a goal. Tough break

  • Ali Siddiqui

    OMG!

  • http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/worldcupfan/ dw

Ooooooh. That was maybe half an inch from being all the way over.

  • Moe

100% goal. The entire ball went behind the line.

  • Roland

Ref was too far to see it. Break for Korea.

  • Bidemi

they’ve robbed the french of a goal. ton pis.

  • Sal

Looked like a goal to me. The keeper was a step or two behind the line when he saved it.

  • Ali Siddiqui

Someone care to explain why that wasn’t a goal? Although the ball was over the line?

  • Roland

The ref didn’t see it cross the line.

  • Sal

Replay clearly showed that was a goal. France wuz robbed.

  • SES

    It wasn’t a goal.

  • Pete

Blah, damn refs blew that one. France should be winning 2-0

  • Ali Siddiqui

Jeez even the linesmen missed that? Bah! It should be 2-0 France!

  • Sal

The rooster clearly saw that one as a goal.

  • http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/worldcupfan/ dw

The ball wasn’t all the way over line. If this were the NFL, there would not be “indisputable evidence.” Well, unless it was the Steelers and this was the Super Bowl.

  • SES

Too bad for France, and a lucky break for Korea.

  • Bidemi

    henry needs some support.

  • Ali Siddiqui

The Sun commentator: “This match is so far as dull as dish water.” :)

  • Bidemi

are you idiots blind? the ball clearly crossed the line.

  • Sal

South Korea free kick doesn;t miss by much. I’m actually finding this one to be entertaining but I am a masochist.

  • http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/worldcupfan/ dw

Considering the size of the South Korea crowd, the noise is incredible.

  • AJ

Weren’t they supposed to use sensors in the ball to determine plays like that no goal?

  • Sal

Zizou should be allowed to run over players. Lifetime achievement award or something like that.

  • paddy

A sad case of the Korean fans being better at the chants, than their players are on the ball.

    France looking pretty ominous.

  • Pete

Henry looks great tonight. It is about time he showed up to play for France.

  • Ali Siddiqui

I think they instead need sensors on the posts so anything round that passes through it can be recognized.

  • Ali Siddiqui

    Oh man…this is slow… ~_~

  • Davide

France got a bad break that was a goal. They’re playing well. South Korea not showing much.

  • Ali Siddiqui

2 Yellow cards so far for Korea, none for France. And Barthez looks bored. ;)

  • AJ

Snooze. Wake me up when both teams fall off a cliff.

  • Moe

I’m actually enjoying watching the French play.

This is the first time since EURO 2000 I think.

  • http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/worldcupfan/ dw

I went back to the TiVo and watched it again from all three angles. On one the ball fully crosses the line. On the other two, it comes about an inch from fully crossing. In a sport with replay, it’s no goal, no indisputable video evidence.

It was a lot closer to being a goal that that Steelers TD, though.

  • AJ

“43:11 Three Korean ladies looking bored there. The lady on the left looked like she was drying her nails.”

I’m clipping my nails as I watch :-)

  • Ali Siddiqui

LOL! Dw, that is hilarious it looks like the cameras are even more confused! :)

  • Alessandro

    Forza gli Francese !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • AJ

What is a Steelers TD? lol

  • AJ

    Mercy mercy mercy

  • Ali Siddiqui

Sun Commentators “Thank God the referee puts us through our misery and calls Half Time” :P

  • Alessandro

Korea hasn t shown anything, no skill… France is impressive, seems like the retired are back on track…

  • http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/worldcupfan/ dw

I’ve seen similar situations in ice hockey, and they have a billion cameras mounted around those goals.

    Sometimes, it’s just not clear.

  • Roland

That ball came very, very close, but good no goal call.

  • SES

Just wait until the 2nd half. There’s gonna be an attack on both sides and I’m guessing a few subs as well for Korea.

  • Roland

I think the ball did croos, but you can’t tell from some angles – not enough to overturn the call on the field, according to the NFL, as others have pointed out.

    Go Dolphins.

  • alternababe

Korean defense and handling of the ball are poor. Everytime the French mount an attack, there are 1-2 French offensemen who are totally in the clear.

Also, when the Koreans pass to each other, it’s pretty shaky and often causes more of a retreat than advance. The players from the best teams tend to pass so that the ball is just ahead of the target, but Korean passes tend to end up short, making the target scramble to keep it on their side.

Disappointing to watch. The most we Koreans can hope for is a tie.

  • Troglodyte

“i am wonthering whether the LEE jeans is opular in korea :p”

Not really much of a joke considering the name is actually pronounced ‘Eee’.

As for the too-many-Kims/Lees comments…those are surnames. Closest Western analogy to why there are so few would probably be the Scottish clan system.

  • Alessandro

they have two different names for 11 players and they all look alike except the one with dyed hair, this one u can spot easily…

  • alternababe

By the way that French chicken’s cute, but I feel sorry for it. haha. I hope it’s not supposed to be a sacrificial offering!

  • Ali Siddiqui

Anyone care to explain the significance of the Cockerel for the French? Because so far I’ve counted at least two other pictures of people wearing chicken hats.

  • Roland

Let’s see if the french have the stamina to keep their lead. They slowed waaaaaaay down by the end of the first.

  • SES

I think Advocaat is going to bring in a few subs, 2nd half. He did that with the match against Togo and Korea won. If Korea does win this match though, they’ll advance.

  • Ali Siddiqui

Funny you mention that Daryl! I was also thinking they should bring in Park Chu Young for the 2nd half or Kim Jun Kyu.

  • Roland

If you anything about Cockerel’s, you know how combative and vain they are. Perfect mascot, really. Tasty too.

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

i will just watch this game and post no comments :)

  • http://www.pertinentverge.blogspot.com Darkoze

I think it’s becasue they all ski on Rossignols…which has the rooster on the skis.

No, just joking. Is it because of the way the guys strut in France? We here in the States use the slouching pants-down-to-th-ankles symbol fo rour manhood.

  • Ali Siddiqui

    “Tasty too.” Hahahaha :)

  • Roland

I won’t make anymore cock jokes. Unless I have to.

  • AJ

Hey Mohan, we need your dry wit man. Don’t let us watch this game alone.

  • Sal

Is South Korea even interested in playing this game? Their fans sound great but the team has done nothing. Maybe they are holding out to beat Swiss.

  • AJ

Would be nice to see some magic from Zidane instead of just a 5 oclock shadow on the back of his head.

  • Ali Siddiqui

Sal, that’s what it really looks like right now. Unless S.Korea decides to counter…or rather attack some time soon.

  • Trav

Good question about the ‘cock’ symbol and why the French use it. I’ve wondered since I saw it on the Cenotaphs and War Memorials when I was in France last year.

  • AJ

Korean players have learned how to dive with style.

  • http://www.pertinentverge.blogspot.com Darkoze

A save! And the goalie’s not in the goal.

Well, never mind. Save wasn;t necessary..

  • Keyser

I didn’t see korea against togo, but today they aere showing nothing.

  • Pierre

The origins of the French cock lie in wordplay on the Latin Gallus, which means both “Gaul” and “rooster”. “Gaul” was the name of the Roman province that is today France, and the Celtic Gauls were its pre-Roman inhabitants. The modern French nation is derived from the Gauls, the Romans and the Germanic Franks. Nowadays, some in France consider this symbol to be associated with vulgar jingoism rather than out of fashion. However, it continues to be used as the national symbol for the French rugby and soccer teams, amongst other uses. [1]

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rooster

  • Roland

That’s the second time Malouda has reached the goal without knowing what to do with the ball.

  • Ali Siddiqui

Pierre, very much appreciated that information about the Cockerel. I would’ve thought that the Lion was a symbol the French would use seeing it on a few symbols and what not.

  • http://www.pertinentverge.blogspot.com Darkoze

    Cockerel
    Well, there’s thisthis.

Contrary to Freud, a cockerel may not sometimes be just a cockerel.

  • Moe

Why is Wiltord out? he was doing ok.

  • Ali Siddiqui

Oh man. Have we gotten this bored with this match that we are now looking up the basis of the Cockerel symbols? :)

I’ll try finding something about Kim Chi.

  • Trav

Zoot Allor! The Lion is an English symbol.

  • Ali Siddiqui

Hehehe. Hand ball and a fake!

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kim_chi

  • SES

Something needs to happen soon for my dear homeland to get the signal to wake up and attack.

  • Keyser

what pisses me off is that Ivory coast is already out and is more than any of the 4 teams of this group.

  • Pierre

The Korean national flag is called Taegukki. The meaning of Korean National Flag is very philosophical. The origin comes from the old oriental philosophy called the theory of Um-Yang, in Chinese pronunciation Yin-Yang. Yin means dark and cold, while Yang means bright and hot. The idea of Yin-Yang is supposed to be originated from the old Korean philosophy of Samshin meaning three gods.

    http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/kr.html

    Yep,I’m bored :-)

  • SES

Kimchi is really healthy and quite delicious. :) More Westerners should try the stuff.

  • Ali Siddiqui

Oh my. How I could go for some French Onion Soup…mmmm. Can you guess I haven’t had lunch yet? :)

  • AJ

    Cool, dueling stretchers.

  • Ali Siddiqui

It’ll be sad to see Zidane leave. :( Still he had a good run and I hope he goes out with a bang in this WC!

  • http://www.pertinentverge.blogspot.com Darkoze

French GK, Fabien Barthez, definitely an extra in “Pirates of the Caribbean II”.

How do you say “Arghhh” en Francaise?

  • Sal

Korean player duct taped to the stretcher and sprayed with water. That is magic healing right there.

  • Ali Siddiqui

“How do you say “Arghhh” en Francaise?”

    I’m pretty sure that’s Universal! :)

“Korean player duct taped to the stretcher and sprayed with water. That is magic healing right there.”

Top notch medics right there. Hahahaha!

  • http://www.pertinentverge.blogspot.com Darkoze

Gorgeous little run right up the goal line. Where was the French forward(s) for the Fred-like tap-in?

  • http://www.pertinentverge.blogspot.com Darkoze

    Daryl,
Your wish is my command. Ahn in.
    Hmm.
    Ahn in.
    Who Out?

  • Ali Siddiqui

“68:23 Lee Ho out injured. Kim Sang Sik is in. Great, great name. Could be a children’s story about a little girl (Kim, obviously) who overcomes some form of illness (let’s say laryngitis) to perform in the school musical (let’s say “Annie”).”

Hahahahaha! Oh my! Now I have coffee all over my shirt. :)

  • Bidemi

Why doesn’t france put more men in the box??? Its infuriating.

  • http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/worldcupfan/ dw

I live in a large American city with a sizable Korean population. Therefore, I’ve had kim chi. It’s OK, but the garlic and spice is a boot to the tastebuds.

There’s an Asian hotsauce I use in cooking that has a rooster on the bottle.

Is it sad that I’ve switched over to a baseball game because I’m bored with France and South Korea?

  • Roland

Kimchi is real spicy goodness. But give me steak boeuf and pon frits. Mmmmm.

  • Ali Siddiqui

dw, that isn’t sad…I’m looking at BBQ recipes to take with me when I head home to see the parents in a week or so.

  • Bidemi

This is among the best midfield displays ive seen in a while. Where is the attack though? Bring on Trezeguet!!

  • Ali Siddiqui

Mmmmm pommes frites avec fromage…mmm poutine.

  • Trav

    I’m at work. ‘Nuff said.

  • http://www.pertinentverge.blogspot.com Darkoze

    Roland,
Isn’t that “pomme frites”? I believe pon frits are the mysterious things that attach to your shoes when walking in NYC. Also known as “Bum dung”.

    Just trying to help.

  • Ali Siddiqui

    “Bum dung”? LOL! :)

  • Roland

You Quebequois and your poutine. How high do you have to be to eat that stuff?

  • http://www.pertinentverge.blogspot.com Darkoze

    Abidal!

    Une Jaune!

Out for the last match for France

  • Ali Siddiqui

Roland, actually I’m in Windsor…originally a Torontonian but Poutine is awesome! :o Especially after a couple of brewskies.

  • http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/worldcupfan/ dw

“Mmmmm pommes frites avec fromage…mmm poutine.”

I was with you up to the last word. Ick. I’d rather drink dishwater.

  • Roland

Darkoze, my French is, how you say? Crappy.

  • Roland

    GOOOOLLLLL!!!!!

  • Sal

    GOALLLL!!!! Korea

  • Moe

    GOOOOOOAAAAAALLLLL!!!!! Korea.

  • Ali Siddiqui

    Omg…Korea gets a goal.

  • Roland

Hahaha, I knew the French were soft this year.

  • Keyser

    voilà!
    quelle belle surprise!!!!!

  • paddy

Oh dear, a big blue by Le Bleu.
Should be an interesting few minutes to go.

  • Ali Siddiqui

Jeez about time we have an equalizer! :) Kim Chi Shuffle! How the mighty have fallen!! ^_^

  • Trav

Roland, When eating poutine you have to get that fresh cheese curd that squeaks when you chew it. You know, the stuff that is still milky and salty. Mmmmmmmm

  • AJ

South Korea never gives up. That is being shown tonight. Fitness is great.

  • Roland

Oh my god, my heart felt that.

  • http://www.pertinentverge.blogspot.com Darkoze

    Roland,
    Bum dung is as well.

Not to worry, according to the French, EVERYONE’S French is crappy…except of course theirs.

But with that Korean goal, who the hell cares, c’est non?

  • http://serenique-box.blogspot.com/ Ms. S

    Yeah!!! One more Korea! *Claps*

  • Jen in Boston

Korea’s fans are incredible. Koreans have the momentum at the moment.

  • http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/worldcupfan/ dw

Le Coq is laying an egg. Just like in 2002.

  • Ali Siddiqui

    Mmmmm squeeky.

Korea with an excellent attack. Maybe this’ll rouse the French out of their funk?

  • http://www.pertinentverge.blogspot.com Darkoze

    GK Barthez,
Looked like he was siganlling that ball in. He probably can’t wait for that “Pirates of the Caribbean” ship to come in.

    Henry…..DENIED!!!

  • http://www.atmysports.com jack

I really want someone to win,

  • Moe

    OH Henry!

  • SES

    Go Korea!

  • AJ

Zidane out for the next game. France might be in trouble. Too bad they play Togo who might not even show up for the match.

  • Roland

See what happens? You hozers start hitting that Labbatt’s Blue and the next thing you know you’re scarffing down a heart attack.

Korean fans rock. They’re like a stadium of Manolo “El Bombos”

  • Ali Siddiqui

    Goooo Korea! Goooo Korea!

  • Sal

The shite hitting the fan for France. What a change the last ten minutes of this game.

  • Ali Siddiqui

Roland, it’s either poutine or Jah Patties…mmmm. :)

Seriously after this match is over I’m off to get lunch.

    Ooooh so close Henry!!

  • http://www.pertinentverge.blogspot.com Darkoze

How big is that blown call for the mystery second French goal in the first half!??!

If this ends up as a draw, I’d love to be the clichese fly on the wall when the French Soccer Federation goes to FIFA HQ with their complaint.

  • http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/worldcupfan/ dw

FIFA is so pro-Europe that I’m sure they’ll overturn the no-goal and give the points to France. Well, for the right price. Wink wink. Nudge nudge.

  • Ali Siddiqui

France can’t get it in…and the Korean fans are going bananas!

  • paddy

    Bye Bye Zidane.
Hope that’s not his last appearance in the world cup.

  • Ali Siddiqui

    Come on tie breaker!

  • SES

The Korean fans outnumber the French fans 200-1.

  • http://www.pertinentverge.blogspot.com Darkoze

So, that’s two quality players France lost for the next game. Opinion on their Togo chances now?

  • Ali Siddiqui

Looks alot like France is panicking. Panic you must not!

  • Roland

SES, lol, that number might be off a little. But they are punching above their numbers.

  • http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/worldcupfan/ dw

The Korean fans out-yell the French fans 20,000-1.

  • diego

Wouldn’t it be cool if Togo beats Switzerland tomorrow???

  • Ali Siddiqui

Zidane, looks like this is the career killer for sure.

  • EricUK

Bit of photoshopping shows how far behind the line your boot can be to stop the ball being TOTALLY over the line.
    http://img158.imageshack.us/img158/7290/overtheline4zl.jpg

  • Roland

France foolishly believed aging talent would protect a one point lead for 90 minutes. They were wrong. This team has no killer instint – and if by some miracle they do make it to the second round, they will be quickly eliminated.

  • SES

If Togo beats Switzerland, it would sure be an interesting lineup in Group G.

  • http://www.pertinentverge.blogspot.com Darkoze

Diego, Yes, Togo should beat Switzerland tomorrow. That may be the only way the players and the coach will get their hands on the cash the Togo govt.’s got deposited in the Swiss banking system.

  • Ali Siddiqui

FIFA better prepare for the oncoming French mobs heading for their doors to protest that goal/or no goal controversy.

  • SES

I wish Korea attacked with the same fierce spirit they had in the 2nd half with the 2nd half. I was thinking that the French would just win this one outright because of Korea’s poor performance. They definitely need to improve their performance against the Swiss on Friday.

  • paddy

It will be even more embarrasing if Togo beats France in their next match.
    Dejavu????

  • Bidemi

WHY DIDNT FRANCE PUT PEOPLE IN THE BOX? THEY SET-UP THEIR OWN DOWNFALL.

  • http://www.atmysports.com jack

    who will tomorrow’s matches

    Suadi
    Togo
    spain

  • http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/worldcupfan/ dw

Who has the call on that goal? The linesmen? The ref is looking at it from the front; shouldn’t there be someone on the line looking in?

And where was the goal cam?

  • Ali Siddiqui

The new scandal that rocks FIFA, “Goal Gate”.

  • SES

So, do ya think France can advance to the next round?

  • littleguy

At least France scored a goal this WC!!!!

    Oh yeah…USA baby!

  • hoa

Great fighting spirit from Korea! The ref screwed France big time in this game.

  • http://sports.godblessthefreaks.org Philip

I don’t want to beat a dead horse here — every World Cup has its uneven groups. But speaking as a totally biased US supporter, it’s awful that two teams will be eliminated from Group E while two teams have to go through from Group G. I say this recognizing that at present, the US is the 4th-most deserving squad in E, but I would feel the same way about the elimination of Ghana or the Czechs. Ditto Group B; I wish that Cote d’Ivoire could play France instead of Argentina.

  • Bobbio

French riots on the street! All is normal in Gay Paree!

  • werttrew99

I’m calling it first: Togo will shock France with a 0-0 tie, and France will not go onto the 16.

  • alternababe

    Yay for the tie!!

  • Bidemi

Tomorrow’s games are absolutely dreadful. Worst day for football.

  • alternababe

Spain vs. Tunisia should be good; pulling for Spain (actually I want Spain to win this thing so nothing against Tunisia :D)

Togo vs. the Swiss — Go Togo!

  • jujitjohn

What happened? Alessandro, que pasa man? I thought European dignity would be upheld. Damm it. I lost 50,000 grand because of this. Damm it. Well, Korea scored a goal! I better use my MMA and beat up a Frenchmen and one Italian to get my money back. Damm it! Italia, France? Damm it! Damm it! ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

  • http://www.atmysports.com jack

i agree too,Bidemi if we are following we have to predcit those games too

  • Jodido

What a letdown. The great Zidane deserves better than this. I hope France pulls it together against Togo.

  • alternababe

I also agree about Group C and E having more than two teams I wish were allowed to advance. Ivory Coast, the US, and either one of the Czech Republic/Ghana seem set to be left behind…and all are well-deserving to go on.

  • Bidemi

Zidane played on the level of everyone else. What exactly are yo saying Jodido?

  • shabirl

OMG wot a exciting game, i was so dissopointed with france! they should of scored more goals, they were dominatting the game but what a shame they lost, also it might of been the last game of the spectacular zinedine zindane…

  • hoa

The Korean Red Devils are fantastic. You see more blues in the stand today but Koreans are loudest throughout the game. It’s great to have a fan support like this.

Zidane was a great player. Anyone saw him play over the years will not disagree with me. Hopefully this will not be his last international game.

  • shabirl

what a disspointment for france, they should of really won the game…

  • Bobbio

There may not even be another game! Word on the street is that Togo is withdrawing from the world cup… the cads!

  • patrick

That’s right, Zidane WAS a great player. Sentiment aside, he didn’t play very well. France needs to bench some of their past-prime vets and let the Riberys and Sahas have their chance.

  • alternababe

Bobbio, what does that mean? Do France and Switzerland have to face each other again?

  • SES

The Round of 16 sure will be interesting.

  • alternababe

I do want the French to advance to the Round of 16.

  • Alice

korea tied with france last minute!! woo~~

  • Bidemi

These are the possible matches for the round of 16..

    France vs. Spain

    England vs. Germany

    Portugal vs. Holland

    Italy vs. Brazil

    OH MY!!!

  • alternababe

hehe…my brother and me were commenting on how…Gallas (the French player just inside the French net when the Koreans equalized) seemed very confused on what he should do…wanting to kick the ball out, or grab it, or just let it bounce into the net.

  • http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/worldcupfan/ dw

“Word on the street is that Togo is withdrawing from the world cup… the cads!”

    Nope, they’re playing tomorrow.
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/world_cup_2006/teams/togo/5092382.stm

  • MARS

Hand it to Korea’s 12th player big time (da fanz), way to support your team during the worst 45 minutes of play in this years world cup. The team paid the fans back nicely.

  • pao

This match reminds me Korea vs Italy in 2002. We thought our goal was enough to win. Then koreans scored a late goal and then againg during the overtime. One thing you have to learn: koreans never give up (and they are a bit lucky too).

  • Jodido

Bidemi – I’m just lamenting the fact that this is Zidane’s last World Cup, and he’s a great player, one of the best of all time. To leave the game with his applause drowned out by Korean drums is a bit harsh.

Especially when France was robbed, big time. I’m no French supporter, (in fact, I wanted Korea to win the game) but France should have won that game.

  • FIFA 2006

Please, people!! Would you stop with the “Luck” comment, already? It is NOT the French who are playing poorly but it is the Koreans who are much more aggressive and defensive, carrying the energy until the end of the game, unlike any of their Worldcup history. Blaming on the wrong target, are you living in the year 2006??? Time to wake up and smell the roses.

  • FIFA 2006

Please, people people, stop with the “Luck” comment already. It is not the French who are playing poorly (well I guess they have their ups & downs but they are still good) but it is the Koreans who are much more aggressive, defensive, and energetic which they seem to carry out until the very last second of the game. We all must admit, they are much different from their past performances that made them the “underdogs.” Korea’d be ruling over the top teams in baseball and soccer. What should we expect next??

  • julian

I predict that France will defeat Togo at least 2/0 and will make it to the next round. They will play Spain who in spite of their great opening game vs. Ukraine will lose 2-1 as they always do (that’s the consequence of being coached by a fu….g racist) , we’ll see after that. Hip Hip for the US for their great fight against Italy, and to Korea for their spirit.

  • CTL

Am I alone in thinking that Korea’s equaliser by Park Ji Sung was actually an own-goal by Fabien Barthez?

Park’s flick-on was typical of those that usually clear the crossbar, but it was Barthez’s crazed lunge that actually diverted the ball into his left goalpost. No wonder William Gallas was fuming and incensed.

Any more gaffes against Togo, and its France to-go home!

  • MichaelChou

What a match!I must admit, eventhough I’m a huge fan of Argentina and Portugal, Korea always turned out to be an exciting team to watch in the WC. Kudoz to “te-ha-mingu” for adding a touch of excitement to the WC!

  • Dae han minguk

    Yay for the tie!

  • sung
  • hoa

Thanks you sung for the link to some of the red devils pics. The support of the Red Devils for their team will never stop amazing me because being a self-amitted soccer fan, I never see anything like the support the devils give to their team. I saw the enthusiasm of the Dutch, England and the Mexican, but the support from the Red Devils appear to top everybody else. But I’m not sure if that’s is drawn from the love of soccer or mere nationalism, or both.
Any devil out there, mind to give us your thought?

P.S.: I should admit that my English is like the French Attack: it is not good. so any understanding is well appreciated.

  • Korean Person

Do you realize that basically everyone in a 100 mile radius of a television in Korea in crazy about this soccer thing? And there are a lot of televisions there. I mean the entire population is nuts. The ENTIRE population. Everyone cares a bit too much. They’ve composed songs that play everyway, made countless t-shirts, and every commercial except like 5 is associated with the world cup. Students’ test scores dropped during the last world cup season for crying out loud… and it’s probably not going to be any different this time around. and I’m sure they’d tell me that I’m not korean for disapproving with the nation’s complete frenzy. But what can I say? I disapprove. But I guess when your entire country is rooting for them, the soccer team better win or at least make it to like the top, uh, 16 or whatever (I don’t know what it’s called). They shouldn’t let ALL those people down…

  • Nicolas

Boggers from the Netherlands shit me… the problem is they’re probably all from somewhere else…. suggestion for “The World Cup Blog” website the flag should be the country we support not the country we are blogging from.

    Peace.
