LiveBlog: England-Trinidad and Tobago

England gains its second win of the 2006 World Cup with a lackluster perfomance against a plucky team from Trinidad and Tobago. Read all of the play-by-play below and leave your thoughts on the game.

Final: England 2-0 Trinidad and Tobago

Full time England wins and remains atop the Group B table with six points. It wasn’t the prettiest win but with a pair of goals in the final 10 minutes England fans can only hope that their team’s finishing woes have been solved. Wayne Rooney did come in during the second half but didn’t show much. Trinidad and Tobago once again represented themselves very well.

90+ Stern John knocks it in the goal but it is called offside. Just by an inch. Great little back heel flip but all for naught.

90+ GOALLLLLL!! Steven Gerrard drills home one from the top of the box with his left foot to clinch the victory and a spot in the second round for England.

89:12 Time is running out for a gutsy Trinidad team that went 170+ minutes without giving up a goal in their World Cup debut appearance.

87:48 England fans loudly singing their anthem. They should incorporate the words God Save our Crouch in that tune.

86:34 England’s offense with be criticized again after this one, but their defense should get some praise. They’ve been well organized the past two games.

85:05 For the first time all day the Soca Warriors bring their team forward. They realize they need to get a goal here. Rooney on the other end jumps around but is unable to connect.

83:49 A heartbreaking goal for T&T but not much Sancho could have done with Crouch climbing up and using his height. England might come away with another lackluster win after all.

82:47 GOALLLLL!!! Beckham crosses it and Crouch goes over Sancho’s back to head it in. A small celebration but no robot.

82:03 Lennon wins England a corner. Beckham takes it from the righ side and it is cleared away by Trinidad. They almost connect with Stern John on a long ball but it doesn’t quite happen. Can you believe this game?

80:56 Oh to be at the parties today in Trindad if the Soca Warriors get another result. That country must be electric right now.

80:00 We’re ten minutes away from another T&T 0-0 win.

77:46 Lampard again with a shot and it scoots across the box off target. England starting to come alive with Lennon on the right wing. T&T continues to hang in there.

76:32 Lampard collects a bouncing ball in the area and hits it with his left foot but it is right at Hislop. Nice bit of combination play by Crouch et al.

76:04 Stern Jorn beats Ashley Cole one-on-one but can’t get by the final England defender. Crouch looks like he doesn’t get enough oxygen up there. He looks dizzy like Ronaldo.

73:38 Lennon in the box hits it into Yorke’s arm but it is not called. That could have been a hand ball. Tough call for the ref to make. Downing in for Cole. Weird choice there with Cole playing well.

72:21 Yorke slides it away from Rooney who has his first run of the match. He appears to be moving well but will he be the answer to England’s obvious scoring woes. Remains to be seen.

71:20 Rooney has barely seen the ball to this point. Lennon doing a nice job with his speed. T&T still hesistant to bring on a full attack. This final 20 could be very interesting.

69:30 Cornell Glenn on for Jones as T&T gets some fresh legs up front. I could use some fresh liveblogging fingers. Starting to cramp up here in the heat.

69:14 Starting to have a wild fantasy that Trinidad and Tobago will win the championship without scoring or letting up a goal in seven matches. As long as Crouch continues to suck that might be the case today.

67:05 Joe Cole has had a nice tournament for England. Where are Gerrard and Lampard? They have largely been non factors.

65:58 Much credit to Trinidad’s defense for holding its own in the box. England has been in their end most of the game but thus far no big mistakes by the Soca Warriors. They play with a heart that some other teams in this tournament have lacked.

64:15 Raise your hand if you think this England team looks good enough to win the World Cup. Anyone raising their hand?

63:12 Public service announcement: we’re liveblogging every game so please stop by here again. Your thoughts and comments are as welcome as the crowd shots of England wives.

61:45 England passing it around nicely but the story remains the final third. Lennon brining good speed on the right side. T&T looks very happy to play for the draw.

60:12 Beckham with a free kick from far out that sails wide. Hislop really has not been tested in this one. Both teams have gone 120 minutes without a goal.

58:45 Rooney hasn’t scored in the past minute. Highly overrated, he is. The foot looks good though. Nice to see him play after all this scuttlebutt.

57:01 Wayne Rooney comes in to a big ovation. His girlfriend is shown in the stands. Big ovation to her. Owen is off the pitch after another subpar match. Lennon in for Carragher. Sven bringing in some pace for an England team that has played without any today.

55:23 Cyd Gray with a yellow for T&T. Sven talking to Rooney. The pressure is on his stocky shoulders. Beckham finds Owen who heads it wide. Story of this game. England can’t get it on target.

54:41 Crouch with a bicycle kick that is way off. That was highly entertaining in a car crash type of way. Crouch looked like a windmill. Nice effort but not really.

52:51 Birchall springs Jones free on a run but the finish just isn’t there. T&T playing England even this half. The Soca Warriors have nothing to be ashamed of this World Cup. Can they do the unthinkable and get a scalp today?

50:44 Rooney getting an excellent workout jogging on the sideline. He has come as close to scoring as Owen. For my friends who are asking, Brent Sancho is playing and is still playing well.

49:39 I believe it was Shakespeare who wrote: “My kingdom for a goal.”

47:46 If T&T is this good, can you imagine if they fielded a team for all the West Indies? Kind of like cricket. That would be neat-o. Anyone know when Trinidad and Tobago gained independence?

46:46 Hislop shown a yellow card for stalling. A minute into the second half???? Tough yellow.

46:16 Does not appear to be any changes from either side to start the second half. The same 22 who brought us that crap first half are still on. Let’s hope they all play better this stanza.

45:01 We’re underway in the second half. Will the Soca Warriors shock the world again or will England deliver another result? We’ll probably find that out in the next 45 minutes unless the game is called due to liveblogging heat stroke. I’ve switched over to a lemon beer thing for this half hoping that it will keep me hydrated and also ward off scurvy. I hope you are happy and healthy wherever you are in this world. It is awesome to have you join me for the fun.

Halftime An uninspiring first half. England rolled the ball around a bit but was awful in the final third with shots flying everywhere but on goal. The underdog Soca Warriors hung in there and had a couple of good opportunities. I’m getting another beer and will be back at the start of the second half. Maybe Wayne Rooney will join us then too. Your thoughts on the first half?

44:27 T&T with the corner and it is cleared away. Sent back in by the Soca Warriors and there is a mass scamble. Stern John almost punched it in with three defenders but John Terry clears it. Close, close, close

43:03 England fans chanting “Rooney”. I don’t think they are calling for the principal in Ferris Beuller’s Day Off.

41:52 Beckham manages to do the unthinkable by hitting it on goal but Hislop eats it up. Seconds later Beckham finds Crouch who should have burried it but appeared to be doing the robot on the ground instead. That was an ugly miss.

41:15 Owen finds Lampard in the box and he hits it over the bar again. You would think that this is England taking penalty kicks with the number of shots they are hitting high.

39:01 Leo Beenhakker looks like a mad scientist on the Trinidad bench. The Dutch coaches sure are having a good World Cup so far. Must be the wooden shoes.

37:16 England continues to control the possession but even Sven has to see that it ain’t working near the goal. T&T has to be pleased to make it this far in the game. The more they hang around, the more you never know….God it is so hot I am sweating cliches.

36:03 T&T gets a corner. Yorke knocks it across and Stern John almost hits a diving header. Robinson flailing in goal for England. That was close. Maybe that will wake up the sleepwalking lions.

33:27 Is this a case of Trinidad being solid or England stinking worse than a hot apartment with seven guys living in it in Berlin?

32:10 Another England corner and Gerrard fails to realize the object of the game is to put the ball in the goal and not over it. Shots of England fans nearly snoozing in the stands.

31:24 England corner. Beckham bends it long and it is brought out and passed around before Beckham sends in a weak cross that is caught by boom Shaka laka. That was a lot of typing for a whole little action.

29:01 Rooney and Walcot getting limber on the sideline. Put them both in and wake us up please.

27:27 Yorke wishes he had a mask in his shorts. He won’t be reproducing anytime soon but boy can he sing soprano.

26:56 England attack is the new definition of “existential.” Go ahead look it up in the dictionary. Yorke down holding his manhood in a not so pleasant way.

25:56 Do you think any of the players out there today have a mask hidden in their shorts? That was one of the stangest goal celebrations during the Ecuador match. Guy scores and reaches into his sweaty jock to pull out a mask which he puts on his face. Oddly entertaining.

24:15 Carlos Edwards with a weak shot that sails way high. Speaking of not working, T&T hasn’t exactly shown much of an attack yet. Maybe they think the object of the game is to tie. Worked against Sweden. That was their best win ever.

21:57 I’m ready to say that Crouch and Owen up front isn’t going to work. I don’t think you want to risk Rooney this early in the match but T&T is poised to hang around for a while.

21:04 Anyone hear any good jokes lately? This one is dragging alone at a tortoise pace.

19:47 Whitley joins the yellow card club by taking down Gerrard. Beckham from almost the same spot on the free kick. Crossed for Crouch but it doesn’t work. Still no goals in this one.

17:58 Theobald shown a yellow for holding Owen’s jersey on a run. Beckham lines it up just outside the area. The ref makes sure Lampard and Stern John are friends. The kick is right into the wall. Soca Warriors dodge the bullet again,

16:34 Crouch’s legs might be longer than the island of Tobago.

15:21 With that Crouch lays out his 10 foot long legs but can’t redirect the cross on goal. Best chance yet for the robot man.

15:10 Well this is turning out to be a bore. Fortunately the fridge is stocked with beer and I have all of you around to keep my sweating body company.

13:30 England dominating possession but it is all for nothing to this point. T&T is just hanging in there. Neither team has scored a goal in this game nor in the tournament. Own goals don’t count.

11:57 Beckham with the corner and it is cleared away. Back into the box and Owen collides with a defender. No call, not that close to a goal.

10:10 A shot of Sven on the sideline. He looks completely bored and disinterested. He should give up his seat to a fan or something. Worth noting he is wearing a blazer which is impressive in the heat. Also worth noting that Crouch has long sleeves on. Everything about him is long. Well, not everything…or so I’ve been told…

8:06 England players coming in waves at the box but it is all one-on-six. Soca Warriors are clogging the box. England’s attack seemingly breaking down in the final third.

7:25 Not a very fast pace to this game at this point. England playing at a similiar pace as the Paraguay match. Trinidad having trouble stringing together passes. I’m sweating bullets here. This might end up being the first nude liveblog in history.

5:23 Lampard with the blast that bounces off of Hislop’s chest but Owen can’t do anything with the rebound. Dodgy keeping.

4:45 Hislop with his first touch in the Soca Warriors goal. England passing it around like this is a practice. T&T content to chase for now.

2:56 Ashley Cole needs to wear velcro boots. Every game he loses a shoe. Keep an eye out for that next game against Sweden. The dude has trouble tieing his laces.

2:15 England with the early control. I swear that Peter Crouch’s socks come up to Dwight Yorke’s eyes. Amzing how tall he is. How long will he play before we see Rooney?

0:45 England in its white kits. Trinidad in red. I am not wearing a shirt since it is a sauna here in Berlin.

Kickoff: We are underway in Nuremburg. A Japanese referee crew is working this game with a US ref as the fourth official. England enters the game atop the table with 3 points, while T&T comes in with a point. Both teams fielding essentially the same lineup as last game with a couple of exceptions.

2 minute countdown: Thanks for joining me for this Group B clash. As always, you thoughts, comments and jokes are appreciated. Let’s love one another and enjoy a great match.

4 minute countdown: T&T sings with joy. Their flag reminds me of scuba diving. It appears that Chris Birchall has learned the anthem by now. Kind of a subdued song for a country with such upbeat music.

5 minute countdown: England’s anthem is played. God save the queen indeed. The crowd sings it loud and proud. The players looked very relaxed and ready to rock and roll.

7 minute countdown: The teams are in the tunnel. The two captains Yorke an Beckham share a laugh and Man United memories. England appears to have a big height advantage.

8 minute countdown: I have assumed the liveblogging position and the day’s first Schofferhofer hefeweizen has been poured. Life is good. Sorry to all of you who are at work and not able to indulge in a beverage. I’ll do my best to have a few in your honor.

13 minute countdown: Does not look like Wayne Rooney will start but he is available off the bench. Jamie Carragher getting the start at right back for England with Neville hurt.

15 minute countdown: There does not appear to be a shadow on the pitch in Nuremburg so this might be game that gives our eyes a bit of a break. Shaka Hislop shown warming up in the T&T goal. Another performance like last game and he might be named King of Trinidad and Tobago.

20 minute countdown: The sense I got from many German fans last night in Dortmund during the Germany-Poland match is that they want to play England in the next round. They think they have their number. With Germany and Ecuador already through, their next game is going to be all about positioning for the second round.

30 minute countdown: You have to imagine that Trinidad and Tobago has a whole lot of new fans after their gutsy performance against Sweden. England has brought a lot of fans to Nuremburg so they’ll have the support in the stadium but the Trinis will undoubtedly win the dance competitions. Speacking of which, Crouch isn’t going to robot today. A shame, really.

40 minute countdown: Another hot and humid day here in Berlin. The game is being played in Nuremburg, which hopefully has an adequate water supply for the English players. The only people who get dehydrated quicker are their wives when they are boozing around Germany. Humid weather shouldn’t impact T&T much.

Pregame: I look forward to having you join me on another magical mystery tour liveblog. Go ahead and let the world know now the final score of this game.

    i bet ENG 2-1

  • Mamimi

I’m hoping that Trinny wins, although it’s a long shot. 2-1.

  • Bert

TNT is a great story, but they won’t score on England. 3-0.

  • Ubi

Man England better dominate this game or else I will lose all faith in them. Trinidad sucks. They are so bad, that the fans were ecstatic they tied agains Sweden. Sweden is a good team but a tie is no reason to rejoice. Come on you crazy Europeans do it!

  • diego

Although it would be a nice Cinderella story, I don’t think T&T has the tools to pull off another heroic tie.
    England 3-0.
Hope to see that robot dance today.

  • ScottishByMarriage

I might be English by birth but as my Glasweigan husband tells me I am Scottish by marriage, so come on Trinidad & Tobago I want tomorrows news headline to read

‘Scotland puts England out of the World Cup’

    or

‘Scotland, the thorn in Englands side’

    or just

    ‘Scotland 1 England 0′

I could go on – but come on lads – win it for the Tartan Army

  • suzzy

England might have a lot of shots, but I have faith Trinidad’s goalie will stop them, just like he did against Sweden. They are on fire, I feel a tie coming 2-2

  • SES

England 2-0, although T&T could pull off another surprise. These matches have become quite unpredictable at times.

  • ScottishByMarriage

I really don’t think that we can write TNT off that easily at all – they want it and England seem to just take it for granted they will win.

Come on Trinidad & Tobago we have faith in you

  • Mario Zagallo

What if Ecuador ends up first on their group ?

Will play against … Trinidad & Tobago???

They are showing pre game show at some chinese channels here:

  • ronnie

    When is rooney playing?

  • Andy

Well since England are going to win the world cup and all, it would be helpful to just demolish this game.

Don’t kid yourselves. We all know England will win this game and then the Swedish game will be a tie, thus providing England the first offical “clinch”. Yes, life is good.

  • Dave

Rooney is in, thats huge for England
Rooney will play extremely hard being that he hasnt played in 2 months!

  • Nirmala

    I am a soca Warrior!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Nirmala

By the way Ubi i think you are disgusting. The team did well to obtain that 0:0 draw against sweden and should be commended. Irregardless of who they play and what the score, i would never be disrespectful against the team or players. All countries have done well to reach this far.!
    GO Soca Warriors!!!

  • Dave

Why wont we see the robot today??

  • Jen in Boston

England win 2-0. I love T&T, but think England will hold them off.

    Trinidad – 29
    Tobago – 25
    England – 0!!

    Come on T&T!!!

  • ScottishByMarriage

Why is it the English always assume they will win everything – get real it don’t happen – they only won the last one thanks to an own goal – they played terribly and didn’t deserve the 3 points at all.

    Come on TNT

  • pwnawannab

It’s TNT – it’s a dynomite – haha AC/DC – I am playing that song everytime they score. England on the other hand…

  • GWAR

1-1, a bad bounce will get England on the board fairly early, but several yellows will slow them down significantly, and Trinidad will equalize early in the second and hold on to tie.

  • Dave

anyone know why MR Blogger said there will be no robot dance today!
I want T and T to win but also need Rooney to score, so lets have a 2-2! goals for Rooney and Crouch and 2 For Yorke!

4-0 ENGLAND. Come on my boys!

  • ScottishByMarriage

Crouch said in a recent interview he would not do it until they won the world cup – so we will never see it again thank god

  • Roland

England is going to have to come out and beat T&T convincingly for me to start believing in them. I predict that once the boys stop whining, they’ll get their shit together and win 2 – 0.

But then, the Trinidad-Tobagans are playing for a barrel of rum each, so anything is possible…

  • SES

GO T&T. :) England shouldn’t underestimate the Warriors as they’ve got power and skill.

    ESPN2 has gone crazy.

Eric Wynalda, Julie Foudy and Rece Davis have all just done The Robot live on air, proving that it’s actually harder than it looks.

Then Foudy asked Davis if he’s “ever pulled the worm out.” Easily my ESPN2 World Cup highlight so far.

    Oh that was hilarious.

Good Luck TRINIDAD!! Maybe they can pull of a tie again!!

  • Jango

Is Rooney going to start ?
I dont see T&T getting through England’s defence, unless by some extreme stroke of luck.
It all depends on England’s finishers.
Therefore Owen’s form will be crucial. If Owen catches fire, I would give a 2-0 for England, both scored by Owen.
    Else a 1-0 for England.

I’m liking what I see from England this time out: no dilly-dallying, no hestiation once the midfield has figured out its pattern: immediate passes down the wings (England’s strength) for eventual crosses into the box; the crosses have not yet been as successful, but this is not the England of the foggy, nimrod-footed Paraguay game. Trinidad is less certain.

T&T are not dangerous enough on offese. Now, they are holding up well against the English but there is too much pressure on them. If this continues, T&T will let one or two slip… :(

The Anglo-Saxon world’s focus on Wayne Rooney, instead of on the action on the field, continues to be one of this World Cup’s tabloid nausea: Meanwhile England beginng to miss chances instead of making them, which may well lead to a belated entry of Wayne Rooney into this thing.

    How can you beat,

  • rob

Yeah it would be lovely to have Defoe. We do have Walcott though! Oh wait, hes crap.

  • hoa

Poor performance from England up to this point. I doublt that it’s b/c of the heat again. But great defense from TT. It would not be a surprise if they can get a point from this game.

  • pf

    Bob… lol… dig that humor!

Perhaps due to the lack of mask in his pants, Yorke will have use his shorts as a mask?

  • http://www.pertinentverge.blogspot.com Darkoze

    Blah-Me,
Appreciate the link to the mask pic. I’m hoping this mask thing really takes off; there’s a few co-workers here that would benefit tremendously with just such an addition to their appearance.

  • http://www.pierretristam.com Total Football

More than thirty minutes in, a scoreless draw is not anywhere near what England was promising, though the team–the first 15 minutes and Lampard’s just-now-wide shot aside–hasn’t given reason to believe that there’s more to the side than meets the heavy lidded eyes. This is Trinidad’s window right here: take advantage of this England lull, make them pay.

  • Roland

Oh man, T&T is giving England major headaches.

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

Sven Goran is worried like Klinsmann was yesterday

Drakoze.. to me it looks like a yellow version of spider-man mask.

Hideous too!! But I think its timing and place made it hilarious!

But it’d be cool if it does come out big. It might even come out as the latest Halloween costumes!! hehe..

  • Linne

England is holding them to it. Hope the Trinis do well.

England cannot just kick between the posts

  • http://www.pierretristam.com Total Football

No, this is not England being forced out of its rhythm. Same old story: teams aren’t “forced out of their rhythms,” teams entrap themselves in uninspired play, they give up heart and joy–what makes for jazzy football–and take on pretentious demeanors that make for Hamburg-gray football. That’s what England is doing now.

  • http://www.pertinentverge.blogspot.com Darkoze

    Blah-Me,
Since he extracted the mask from his shorts, I wonder if that mask can double as a Speedo?

what a shame for Trinidad. They would have had the well-deserved lead at the half but for that miraculous save by John Terry. Still, Trinidad’s hearts shouldn’t sink: this was proof that they’re on par with England, and that England are not the side they pretend to be. Remember: England has yet to score in this World Cup, given that it owes its three-point fortunes to an own goal in the Paraguay match.

Thats awsome about the mask, I like that fact that it was a tribute. Thats really cool.

  • owen

i think even if terry hadn’t cleared it (showing why he’s one of the top central defenders in the world) it wouldn’t have counted – after things died down the trinidad player in the middle got a yellow for knocking the other england defender over during the incident.

all my doubts about crouch resurface. why not two touches? control and slot it by hislop?

props to t&t – they really are going for it – if they had been in another group (like the tunisia/saudi one) they could have made the second round easy – tough luck for them to come up against 2 defensive powerhouses – for all the smack being talked, england is defending well. I can see T&t going through still with a draw or win today and a draw or win against paraguay – easy…

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, start your guillotines. England’s game has again degenerated into a mish-mash of midfield muddles and duck-pond mimmicks whenever they make it near the Trinidadian box. At the moment it’s Trinidad dominating, for reasons like this: England’s Peter Crouch playing like he’s Pele (he just tried a scissor kick swivel that sent the ball frequent-flying to Glasgow) when he should perhaps try to play more crouchy and centered.

  • Laura

I wish I was drinking lemon beer and watching Sancho play! Damn.

The psychological effect alone of putting in Wayne Rooney will give England a big advantage for a moment, until Trinidad realizes (if it tries hard enough) that he’s still part of a team that hasn’t been able to play like one. But here come England, squaring off with another Beckham free kick… that sails past everyone. Rooney already is playing like he’s been overdosing on adrenaline in his off time.

  • gogo

    Good job England!

  • Brian Crocker

Good on T&T. Great showing, and they have played great D with a lot of heart and determination!

  • SES

I could see Ecuador beating England in the knockout stages. The Ecuadorians have a fantastic midfield and defense. It’s just dubious that England will advance to the quarterfinals or semis with their subpar performances.

  • Lloyda from Guyana

T&T just let go and give up…they had chances of their own earlier…but the beliief that they could win faltered in the end…England did not play like a much greater team than the soca warriors…oh that off side was heartbreaking…i going and ccry.:(

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

England wins, but T&T not disgraced

  • http://blue2rose.blogspot.com Blah-Me

Darn it!! It was an offside!! :|

  • http://www.pierretristam.com Total Football

So there it was, you could smell it in the air, the goals were primed and ready; they just hadn’t found their man. But this is still not the England we were promised, not the England that can face down a side even marginally stronger than lowly Trinidad & Tobago. For this world cup “favorite” to play so desperately against a team that normally could barely keep its head above the Atlantic says little about England’s quality, and plenty about its doubtful future. Rooney all you want: the team as a whole, these last few minutes aside, is playing as if on crutches. Maybe this’ll give them reason to live up to their promise. I don’t think they will.

  • Jimbob

How can you guys get into this sport? It’s so unbelievably boring. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Sorry guys–gotta go watch some paint dry now.

  • http://blue2rose.blogspot.com Blah-Me

What the hell?! Why do I feel like crying for T&T now?

They played very well. :( They deserved at least one goal.

    T&T.. goodbye!!

  • Kevin

Jimbob, make sure to get really close so you can inhale the fumes.

  • Enrique

When 99% of the time the ball is closer to your goal than to the opponent’s, the chances to have your opponent scoring are a lot bigger than those of you scoring. Good for England… .hopefully they’ll show some good game in the next matches

  • http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/worldcupfan/ dw

    Poor T&T.

Looks like it took 170 minutes, but England’s alarm clock finally went off.

  • SES

T&T played an excellent game. They shouldn’t be ashamed of how they performed. :) Great job.

  • Lloyda from Guyana

Jim bob get with the program…the whole world loves soccer…u r just a mere speck

  • Ubi

Those goals came way to late in the game. But i do like how it got T&Ts hopes up and then threw them to the ground followed by that bodyslam. Oh the sweet taste of losers losing.

  • Khem

My heart is bleeding for T&T. Eng didnt show much–all luck. The will NOT with this Cup 06.

  • Joe

T & T did a great job in the first half, but we started to see more of what England’s capable of in the second half, they were clearly dominant then. Superb strike from Gerarrd- COME ON ENGLAND!

  • Khem

typo: will NOT win this cup 06. HAH!!

  • Kirsten

What a disappointing game. I was rooting for England all along, but it was poorly played. T&T deserve a good celebration despite the loss – they showed more strength than the English team!

  • Nirmala

THE SECOND GOAL WAS A GREAT ONE. TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO DID REMARKABLE! YOU HAVE DONE US PROUD FOR HTE SPORT YOU PLAYED IRREGARDLESS OF THE FINAL SCORE. THE COUNTRY’S HEART IS SWOLLEN WITH PRIDE!

  • Bobbio

    AAARRGH say it aint so!

  • Lloyda from Guyana

Good showing soca warriors…next time attack more. u first half was a winner but to actually win u have to follow through. ENGLAND DEFINITELY WILL NOT WIN THE WORLD CUP…I PREDICT A KNOCK OUT IN THE NEXT ROUND.

  • Nirmala

JUST REMEMBER DONT’T COUNT US OUT YET! WE STILL HAVE TO PLAY PARAGUAY AND SWEDEN STILL HAVE TO PLAY ENGLAND! WE CAN STILL MAKE IT!

  • SES

Let’s see how Paraguay and Sweden do in their upcoming match.

England did “OK” but T&T showed the world why it deserved to be in Germany.

Go T&T! We’re still rooting for you! :)

  • Denni

I felt sorry for that offside to TT in the final minutes. I wanted England to win, but Trinidad and Tobago have shown such spirit that it would have been great for them to score–England did not deserve a comfortable victory against such a spirited side!

  • Lloyda from Guyana

    GO SOCA WARRIORS GO!!!!!!!!!!!

  • javier

Bring the boys back home !!
Don’t leave the whole world watch their poor poor play … no, no.
    Bring the boys back home.

What to expect from the English side if not a 1/8th quick return.

  • Wave

After tonight’s match, I am converted fan of T&T. All the BEST to the entire team. They showed a lot of promise and potential for debute team. As for English team, yawn…

  • owen

It’s interesting to me to see how many American posters on this blog show a poor understanding of that game. T&T played REALLY well – could beat the US easily based on perofrmances at the WC so far – and had a GREAT game plan – which is hold England off and go for goal on counterattacks using their speed.

But England isn’t a slouch either – and that wasn’t a bad performance – they had 24 shots, about 8 on target, 2 goals. T&T had about 7 shots, 2 on target, one offside (barely – that was a sweet move). THeir build-up play was phenomenal and Sven made great substitutions. The whole team picked up after Lennon and Downing came on – much more than Rooney frankly – although it was good to get Rooney a safe competitive run out.

Poorest player for England? Michael Owen – never thought I’d say that. Followed by Crouch.

  • pf

    Jimbob

Sorry to rip on ya pal…

…but I think you ought to get out of the house if the paint is drying — the fumes might be getting to ya.

Now that you’re outside, I suggest an exciting game of baseball where the hot dog guy is really “the man of the match”.

  • Bidemi

Trinidad plays with so much heart and commitment. American needs to learn something from that. You don’t need the best players to put in a decent performance.

  • http://brazil.worldcupblog.org/ Euler

They played with their hearts! Keep your hope Socca Warriors!!!

  • brian34

ronaldhinwho? Gerrard once again shows he’s the best in the world.

  • http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/worldcupfan/ dw

“Trinidad plays with so much heart and commitment. American needs to learn something from that. You don’t need the best players to put in a decent performance.”

    Indeed.

I hope they glued the US team to their seats and made them watch Sweden-T&T over and over again until they understood what will and determination looks like.

  • http://sports.godblessthefreaks.org Philip

    owen,

Except for the finishing in the first 85 minutes, I agree that it wasn’t a bad performance by England. My thinking is more that, although T&T is proving to be a capable opponent, they’re theoretically one of the weakest sides in the tournament. Meanwhile whoever faces England out of Group A, which at this point can only be Ecuador or Germany, figures to be much stronger than T&T. I’ve essentially conceded first place in Group B to England, barring a tremendous resurgence by Sweden — but Ecuador has looked pretty impressive (I haven’t seen the games but their results look good, thtough admittedly Costa Rica isn’t much stronger than T&T) and I think could cause England some problems. And if GER-ECU ends in a draw and Germany finishes second in Group A? Ooooooh….. ENG-GER in the 1/8 finals, now that would be something.

  • owen

finally, although I’m an england fan and wanted that result. I also want T&T to come out second. any result in the sweden paraguay game can still have T&T come out on top as long as they beat Paraguay. even if sweden win, if england beat sweden then t&T can still do it.

  • http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/worldcupfan/ dw

‘I suggest an exciting game of baseball where the hot dog guy is really “the man of the match”.’

    AHEM.

Some of us looking forward to booing Barry Bonds this weekend.

  • owen

completely agree – either ecuador or germany will be a much tougher game – but that’s sort of normal – it always gets much harder out of the group stage – look at Brasil – even they can’t be happy about facing one of Italy or the Czechs – that’s a worse quarter final game (for them – better for all the rest of us) than even England can anticipate!

  • Lloyda from Guyana

England could never beat the top teams with that performance…T&T had a good showing considering that they are underdogs…but england as one of the top teams, more was expected.

  • Akbar

England can forget all about the World Cup.

  • http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/worldcupfan/ dw

“any result in the sweden paraguay game can still have T&T come out on top as long as they beat Paraguay.”

Well, this idiot football ignorant American can tell you how that could happen:

    SWE beats PAR by 1
    ENG beats SWE by 2
    T&T beats PAR by 1

    or:
    PAR beats SWE
    ENG beats SWE
    T&T beats PAR

  • http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/worldcupfan/ dw

    D’OH.

    SWE beats PAR by 1
    ENG beats SWE by 2
    T&T beats PAR by 2

    T&T: 0 GD
    SWE: -1 GD

2-0 will do just fine. 6 points from 2 games played without actually joining in.

    Can’t be bad.

  • Stuart

Having had to miss this match while out at training, I just want to say what a great thing these live game blogs are. MUCH better write-up than in the press, and available immediately.

Thanks for the time and effort Bob, and to everyone else that commented!

  • Jan-Willem Burgers

It’s unfortunate. England could really be a good side, but it’s just not working. This was a pathetic performance. What’s the problem? There’s two in fact if you ask me: the coach and the captain.

  • http://www.somethingawful.com Chainsaw Charlie

People, its hard to play football against highly motivated teams.

    portugal vs. angola
    england vs T&T

former colonies will always play at 120% against their former masters. It’s more than football, its a matter of pride.

Mind you, if Sven finally wake’s up and starts playing real wingers with real pace, england might actually play some good football. And for gods sake, dump Beckam. Theres nothing he does that lampard of gerard cant do 128342389745892347503417590 times better

  • Ninj

    well said chainsaw.

  • gendhis

Finally …both scousers found their way to beat T&T,
    though it was boring match.
    well done England!

  • trinichica

I am proud of my countrymen, and proud of their very brave performance. I feel sad at our loss but we have shown the “stars” on the English side (which were quite dull today actually) that we are a force to be reckoned with. Go Soca Warriors – onwards to Paraguay. Win, lose or draw your country wit yuh!

By the way who is that commentator that we getting on the feed we getting in T&T? Please TV6 I feel I go prefer American commentary that man too damn bias.

I just saw it on German television: Crouch had pulled the defender’s hair just before he scored the goal. The defender had no chance to reach the ball.

  • sooz

Francesca: do you have a link for that?

  • Diane

Well done England, you did it now all you have to do is lift the game to the next level.. That all said T&T played extremely well and I would have liked them to go through they played with the hearts on their sleeves.

  • sooz

isn’t anyone qustioning the partiality of the ref in this game, or did I miss some posts?

  • Doyle_45

One person turned that match around and that was Lennon.

Owen was poor, Lampard couldn’t hit a barn door with a bucket of shite, Rio was shocking. Well done to Terry for his solid performance.

Beckham had a reasonable game. Let us not forget that both goals went from Lennon to Beckham to the goalscorer.

    Enough Said !!!!!!!!

  • http://aol.com Bello

Trini will win god is with them they are working very hard keep the faith

  • http:/http://worldcupwbez.blogspot.com/ Pavel

T&T has won a lot more new friends than Ingerland. And I won’t be surprised seeing the likes of Birchall or Sancho playing in the Premiership.

Ingerland can count themselves lucky for now (even the likes of Liechtenstein kept them goalless for over 70 minutes) but their luck may not hold out against Ecuador or Germany.

So I guess it’ll be another 44 years of hurt, unless Crouch and Gerrard can inflict another 5-1 win against the hosts.

  • Soccer Fan

one thing i notice about this match review it was biast “Ronny is highly overrated” comeon u need to be neutral when doing shit like this,

as far as im concerend England needs to step up there getting lazy Trinidad and Tabago

who infact come from the North and central american league which four teams made it,

only 3 teams are really able to make it through the forth is just lucky to get the oppuirtunity,

u got to understand this is football anything can happen,

but the way Fifa allows teams in and further more do there Rankings is Shocking

the winner of the cup will be the team who wants it more

only two teams have impressed me so far and thats Spain and Australia,

T&T got a draw against Swedan,
looking at Australia they mioght draw against the old and poorly formed brazil (there poor in form AS usall but still godd)

This is soccer anything can happan :P

  • http://www.worldcupblog.com Kerlene

I find it so dumb that people post post all kinds of sill stupid remarks on this site. T&T has a good team and our players share fields with all those big players who ppl think are so good. We had a right to rejoice when we drew with Sweden, beacuse it is out first time in the World Cup. And if England is so good how come they took so long to score against us? Ha ha. We gave them a good fight. We still have a chance to make it to the second rounds. GO SOCA WARRIORS!! ENGLAND SUCKS.

  • Divya(India)

I think England’s Performance was bad when compared
with Trinidad, because Trinidad played in such a way where England was not in a position to put goal.Trinidad being a small country, they tried their best to do so.I think Trinidad will do their best in coming games. If the England is not playing well in coming games, iam sure they are going to face a tough time with Brazil & Argentina.

  • Francis1979

Could someone answer me the following questions:
    (1) Was the referee biased during the game? He showed no respect to Trinidad
    (2) Why did Crouch need to foul Sancho to score the goal. Look at the video you will see for your self.
    (3) If England is so great why did they wait until the 83rd minute to score?
    (4) Lets face it England did not play poor. Trinidad stepped up there game to a new standard that Sweden or England was not expecting and shut own there style since they was unable to play the cross balls. The opposition did not come to Trinidad level. Trinidad came to there level and matched them. We lost the game because it was goals that win the match. But the defense and attack did an excellent job.

    Do you agree or disagree

  • http://yahoo.com trini 2 d bone

i love d soca warriors.England i really thought they were tough d way ppl talk about them but they wrong bcuz it seems like without becham rooney rio and d tall bitch crouch dat team gone through. That goal crouch sxored was a foul. He jumped on brent sancho’s back and pulled his dreadlocks and spun him away from d ball. America totally suck. I am sooo disappointed in that d referee was thinkin about which team was worth more $$$ than to play d game fairly. That shameless thing he did is goin 2 cost him his career. hahahaha 2 bad bcuz u cant keep a good trini done. ALL D BEST TO D SOCA WARRIORS WE BEHIND ALYUH 1500% LOVE NUF RESPECT
WE MAYBE A SMALL COUNTRY BUT SMALL COUNTRY BIG PASSION. FOOTBALL UNTIED ALL OF US ONCE AGAIN AND DESPITE WHAT PPL SAY ABOUT US I’M PROUD TO BE A TRINIDADIAN…………………. I STILL CELEBRATED BCUZ D BOYS HAVE BROUGHT US THIS FAR AND I’M SPEAKIN 4 D WHOLE CARIBBEAN WE ALL ARE ROUTIN 4 U

  • http://www.worldcupblog.org/world-cup-2006 BOB SOH

I think Owen does not received the kind of service he use to from his teammates. They just pump in the high ball and Owen being short will have no chance with tall defenders. The one to be substituted should be Joe Cole he just being indidualistic and going no where.

  • bassmantt

Seems that not only did Crouch have to resort to blatant foul play, but that our goal was not offside after all. FIFA has sent home the official who did not call the foul on Sancho, and the one who MIScalled the offside goal.

Note to ’smith’: you’re argument is that if England is so awful and still beat us, then we really must be the worst.

Or so I translated from this gibberish:”if trinidad r dat gud y didnt they win… england r absoulutly balls at the mo n u cudnt even beet dem hahaha u must b pretty shite like hahaha”

Well, if you can take PRIDE in getting a lucky win by virtue of an own goal in your 1st game, and then having to drag a man down by his hair to win the 2nd, then all power to you.

The sad thing is that I need to support your sorry side against Sweden to give us a chance of advancing.
