Live: Ecuador 3-0 Costa Rica

Thanks for stopping by today, everyone, and thanks for your comments. A big, big day for Ecuador, as they–and Germany–will move on from Group A. Be sure and check out our other LiveBlogs for the matches coming up later and throughout the World Cup.

Full Time! That’s it. Ecuador are through to the second round for the first time in its history.

90+ mora with nother save. Coffi, call it already!

90+ Oh my lord, Kaviedes had a mask in his pants for the celebration.

90+ GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAL de El Nine !!!!!! Kaviedes with the coffin nail!!!!! 3-0.

90+ Delgado with a dangerous back pass, but cleared away without trouble. Costa Rica is spent now. The writing is on the wall for Ticos I fear.

90:00 Into stopage time now. 4 minutes will be added.

88:45 I ahve to agree with announcer (yuck!). Mendez played much, much better today for Ecuador.

88:20 You can hear the Ecua drums in the crowd.

87:30 Costa Rica still on the attack, trying to will a goal. Where has this urgency been?

86:30 Saborio off of the cross bar! So close for the Ticos.

86:00 Think Suarez and Guimaraes will look back on this match and share a laugh one day? Actually, they probably will; they both seems like good dudes.

84:29 Wanchope threatens, but the Ecua defnse holds again. Wanchope was no factor today (so far). And remember he netted two against Germany last Friday.

83:14 Kaviedes’ header goes over the bar, but a nice run. Centeno is off for Costa Rica.

82:30 Have I mentioned how nice it is to wacth a game without the damn shadows?

81:40 Nothing developing for the Ticos. Ecuador setting up at will.

81:00 A “slow, comfortable kill” says the announcer. Guimaraes on the sideline, still coaching and teaching his players.

79:33 I though Kaviedes would score today, and that was close. Ten minute to go, still Ecuador 2-0.

78:42 Nice work in the box by El Nine, but nice save by Porras for Costa Rica.

78:00 Shot by Centeno way off the mark, but a good thought. Now Delgado wants to be taken off. Geez, what’s going on here?

76:30 Corner for Ticos after a noce Gomez run. Cleared by Ecuador, but a throw in coming for Costa Rica.

75:20 Ticos on the attack, but stopped with ease. Time running out for Costa Rica.

74:13 Kaviedes with some nice movement, but the Ticos head the other way. Still 2-0 for Ecuador.

73:01 Urrutia on for Valencia for Ecuador. Great game for the 20-year-old.

71:54 Ecuador now down to four properly-functioning players. Man do they want the clock to speed up.

70:00 Twenty minutes to go! Now would be a good time for Wanchope to weaving his magic. Now Mora is hurt after being fouled by Saborio.

69:17 Goal by Kaviedes called back for offside. Good call, I think. Close, but offside.

68:00 Espinoza not happy about being subbed. Throw-in for Ecuador near the Tico goal. Cleared easily.

67:30 Jorge Guagua to come on for Espinoza. Say it with me: Guagua.

66:45 Magic spray, stat!

66:01 Looks like Espinoza is all cramped up. We need a MASH unit over here!

65:00 Getting a little chippy out there. Remember, if any player gets two yellows in Group play, he has to miss the team’s next game.

64:15 Kaviedes dfown and in agony. Horrible cruch from the Tico defender, no call by Coffi. Deserved a red.

62:47 La Tri back on the attack, but it amounts to nothing.

61:17 For all of the talk pre-Cup about Ecuador’s inability to handle an aerial game, teams aren’t challenging them enough in that department. Valencia gets the magis spray.

60:20 Valencia down and in pain for Ecuador. That would be a big loss for La Tri. Oh boy.

59:59 Yellow for Mora. Time wasting? Either way, Coffi ain’t havin’ it.

59:15 Great run by Solis. Nice save by Mora. Corner for Costa Rica, but a foul gives Ecuador a free kick.

58:00 Nice shot by Gomez goes wide for the Ticos.

57:00 Still Ecuador 2-0. If this scorline holds, Ecuador can win Group A by just drawing Germany next week. But a lot of soccer left to go.

55:59 Hernandez on for Gonzalez for Costa Rica. Guimaraes still looking for answers.

55:05 Great goal by Delgado. 2-0 will be tough for Costa Rica to overcome, but hthere is still a lot of time.

54:00 GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAL!!! Gol de Agustin Delgado!!! El Tin!!!! Ecuador 2-0 Costa Rica.

53:10 Ecuador still on the attack. But Ulises de la Cruz gets a yellow. For wasting time? Talking back? Not sure.

52:30 Ticos still pushing it. But on the counterattack, Delgado has a nice shot saved by Porras.

51:00 Could be trouble for Ecuador is they sit back and try to protect the lead with so much time remaining.

49:40 Long Gomez shot goes wide, but Costa Rica getting some nice runs here. Still 1-0 Ecuador.

47:50 Tenorio may be slightly dinged, thus the Kaviedes sub. Game slow here at the start of the second half.

46:39 The updating is going a little more slowly here in the second half. Not sure why, but bear with me, and enjoy the game!

46:00 We’re under way! Ivan Kaviedes is on for Carlos Tenorio.

Halftime, Take II. Ecuador was in control for most of the match. Do the Ticos have what it take to steal a opint against the run of play? Their tournament lives depend on it.

Halftime. First stanza ends Ecuador 1-0 Costa Rica. Ecuador had the run of play for most of the half, but come away with only a 1-0 lead.

By the way, the goal was assisted by Valencia, not Edwin Tenorio as I first thought.

45+ Ecuador will get their chances. The question will be whether Costa Rica can attack more in the second half.

45:00 Two minutes of stoppage time. Delgado nearly gets another goal. Should, coulda, woulda.

44:25 Mora comes way out to intercept a long pass to Wallace of Costa Rica.

44:01 Yellow card for Ecuador’s Castillo on the challenge. Didn’t see much, but maybe he talked back to the ref.

43:00 Costa Rica looking livlier now, getting some better chances.

41:44 Nice counterattack for Ticos, but the header goes wide. Saborio looking good for the Central Americans as a sub.

40:59 Ecuador hits the post! Corner kick after a goalmouth scramble. Cleared by Costa Rica.

40:00 Ecuador free kick dies in the Costa Rica wall.

39:23 Jawing between some of the players. Let’s hope Coffi keeps on top of it.

37:47 This game is a matchup of the only two World Cup teams that have unique kit brands. Marathon for Ecuador and Joma for Costa Rica.

37:01 Ecuador still in control, leading 1-0.

36:05 Walter Centeno’s long shot off target for Costa Rica.

35:12 Tico cross intercepted by Mora. Gomez run then snuffed out by Ecuador’s back line.

34:02 Free kick for Ecuador in a dangerous position by sub Saborio. Mendez shoots, but the ball is safely over the goal. Not a bad idea for Mendez.

33:09 Ecuador setting up their attack, but Costa Rica clears it out. Valencia looking good for La Tri.

32:18 Costa Rica is showing a little life after the early substitution. Hopefully for them it will continue. Early goals can hurt.

31:35 Ref Coffi is not a large man, but he is in control. Go Coffi!

30:15 Saborio makes himself known right away by winning a corner. Cleared by Delgado.

29:33 Still Ecuador 1-0. Guimaraes looking for answers. But a one goal lead ain’t much.

28:38 Second yellow for Costa Rica, as Mendez is laid out from behind. Danny Fonseca is off for the Ticos, and Saborio is now on. Not a lot of confidence in Fonseca I see.

26:30 Nice run by Wanchope, but Mora snatches it away. Wanchope is one smoove dude.

25:51 I like Coach Guimaraes’ Tico-colored tie. Well done.

25:00 Costa Rica on the attack, but the ball is cleared by Ecuador. Only to be given away again.

24:09 Back and forth now. Offside on Delgado. Waaay offside.

22:08 Corner for Ecuador, after a Mendez backheel goes off of a defender. Shot by Neicer Reasco sails over the bar. Neicer Reasco is an unusual name. Of course, my last name is Apple, so who am I to judge.

20:59 Ecuador really controlling the ball now. Ticos still hacking away, this time at Delgado.

19:49 Still Ecuador 1-0. Costa Rica need to get better service for Wanchope up front.

18:36 Mendez offside. But it’s good for Ecuador that he’s moving forward more.

17:39 Tico chance rolls out harmlessly for a goalkick. Mora clears it out. More still wearing face paint. Yay facepaint!

17:01 Edison Mendez having a better game today for Ecuador. So far.

16:32 I won’t use names…but these announcers are killin’ me. I can’t believe it, but I miss Tommy Smyth.

15:12 Valencia shot blocked twice. Pressure is on Costa Rica now.

14:45 Little from Wanchope so far. Ecuador on the move again.

13:31 Free kick for Costa Rica. Cleared by Ecuador. Man, no shadows is good shadows.

12:36 Corner headed out for a goal kick. Ticos need to chill, and begin attacking again. But then, Ticos are good at chillin’, right?

11:27 Tenorio still limping a bit, but I’m sure scoring a goal will miraculously pick him up. Ecuador having the run of play. Mendez shot knocked out for a corner. Still 1-0 Ecuador.

10:35 Announcers think it should have been a red card. Free kick gets into the box, but Porras saves it without trouble.

9:31 Yellow card for Marin of Costa Rica. Rough tackle on Tenorio. They’re hacking on Teno today.

8:43 Carlos Tenorio with his second goal of the tournament. Assist by Edwin Tenorio, I think. Very nice work from Ecuador.

7:37 GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAALL!!!!! Goal for Carlitos Tenorio!!! Header. 1-0 Ecuador!

5:55 Delgado has the beginning of a nice run, but it’s snuffed out. Head ref and WCB hero Coffi Codja in control.

5:12 Free kick for Ecuador in Ticos’ half. But Costa Rica get a free kick to clear it.

3:55 Dangerous throw in for Ticos. Cleared by Ecuador. Costa Rica definitely moving forward more.

3:00 Ticos on the attack, foiled by Ecua defense. No shadow problems today!

2:19 C. Tenorio limping, but stays in.

1:45 Just feeling each other out at this point.

0:40 Costa Rica in the 4-4-2 today.

0:00 We’re off! Today’s match is in the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. If your keeping official score. Reminds me of the Most Serene Republic of San Marino.

Ecuador in yellow, Costa Rica in white. No lineup changes for Ecuador.

Pregame:

Should be underway in the next few minutes. Don’t forget to make your voice heard by leaving comments below during the match. I anticipate a good one. Cross your fingers!

Just 5 minutes! Which old and creaky striker will come through again for his team: Agustin Delgado or Paulo Wanchope?

10 minutes until Ecuador-Costa Rica. Costa Rica needs a result to stay alive. Poland, which lost to Germany last night, will also be rooting for the Ticos to win the match to stay alive. It seems that predictions for this game lean slightly in favor of Ecuador. What do you guys think?

900 seconds to go. Costa Rica doesn’t have a standing army. Ecuador’s national team has its own perfume. This should all make for a peacefully fragrant match, right?

30 minutes til kickoff. Coach Suarez of Ecuador and Coach Guimaraes of Costa Rica are reportedly very good friends. This may mean they will forego the traditional post-match knife fight. I think congeniality demands it.

Less than 1 hour to go!

pwnawannab: absolutely. I believe that their love of momentum, speed, and using every minute of the game to their advantage. is key. the only european team I have seen with these same attributes is the Czechs, who could give the other teams in that part of the globe a lesson in speed (passing).

and this last beautiful goal btw, is EXACTLY why Equador will go on to hold this group in their teeth. they are going to kick germany’s ass.

Are these guys for real? Wonderful finish for Ecuador in every way, wonderful last twenty minutes. Too bad about the group’s death now that its two winners have been decided, with two games to go; but it’ll still be great fun to see Ecuador taken on Germany: the two leading scorers in the tournament at this time, battling for first place.

haha.. bad game for Costa Rica.

I’m looking forward to the next match. Will England keep up their name? Will they disappoint their fans? I know they would break a lotta hearts (dear to me) if they dont win this one.

:D

Great game! :) The next match between Germany and Ecuador will be thrilling. The German team should be unnerved by the great power of the Ecuadorians.

I think the most likely scenario will be Ecuador vs. England on the next round.

The celebration after Kaviedes goal…When he pulled the mask out of his shorts and put in in his face…Not many people know but that was a classiccal celebration of a great player called Otilino Tenorio. Otilino would have played the world cup if it wasnt for his unfortunate death in a car accident.
When Kaviedes did this I almost cried because of the emotion.
Great way to honor one of the happiest players that ever played this beautiful game!

Guess now we’re in for a pretty boring match between Ecuador and Germany. Both teams are not likely to risk injuries…

ESPN2 commentators seem not knowing the significance behind the celebration after Kaviedes goal. They event joked about it. It seemed they did not do their ‘homework’.
