LiveBlog: Brazil-Australia

It wasn’t impressive but it got the job done. Brazil comes away with their second straight win defeating a capable Australia side. You can read the play-by-play below and leave your thoughts on the match.

Final: Brazil 2-0 Australia

Full time That will wrap it up for a Brazil team that moves into the second round without playing their best football. Australia gave them all they could ask for during the first half. Australia still has a good chance to advance and can do so with a tie or win against Croatia. Thanks for stopping by and for your comments. We’re liveblogging every game so come back again. Give my love to your wife/husband/sons/daughters.

88:45 GOALLLLLL!!!!! Fred scored after a Robinho shot comes off the right post.

87:23 Australia having some opportunities in the area but they are running out of time. They have represented their country well today.

86:12 Australia pushing forward and hoping for the equalizer. Fred coming in for Adriano. Interesting move this late in the came.

84:56 Five minutes left. Does Australia have anything left? Almost as Viduka lifts a shot over Dida and it just goes over the goal.

83:38Mark Bresciano free kick doesn’t miss by much. That was the miracle Australia was looking for.

82:34 Brazil spending the game around the Australia goal. Robinho is shown a card for mouthing off. The German ref knows all the bad words in every language.

81:46 Kaka with a header off the corner and it drills the post. Close.

81:22 Kaka taken down in the center of the field which sets up a free kick. Bob Carlos and Ronaldinho over the ball. If I am a keeper I am crapping myself. Bob Carlos drills it high and far. That seems to be all he can do these days.

79:45 Mark Bresciano with te scissors kick and it is saved by Dida. On the other end Adriano blows by his defender but can’t get the shot off.

79:13 Gilberto Silva is the anti-Ronaldo. He could use an extra meal or two. Maybe Ronaldo has been stealing his food at the training table.

77:24 Australia starting to so signs of being fatigued but they are still only a goal away from getting the result they want.

76:18 Adriando and Robinho are dancing around the box like they are in the ballet. They aren’t able to score but it looks like a matter of time before they do.

75:45 I have yet to type the name Juan. He is playing a good game for Brazil in the back. Well done Mr. Juan.

74:45 The referee has called a pretty good game. Can’t say that too many times this tournament.

73:34 Australia with 20 minutes to get a result. The Socceroos have played a respectable game but haven’t been able to crack through yet. Brazil might be content taking another three points in another unimpressive performance.

72:03 Emerson and Ronaldo come off. Ronaldo looks winded just sitting down on the bench. Sad to see him as a shell of his former self. Just two goals away from tying the World Cup scoring record.

70:55 Kaka with a run for Brazil. He is the only one really showing his class for Brazil. Plus his name is fun to say like you are a screeching bird.

69:02 Aloisi on for Moore as Australia goes offensive. Robinho and Gilberto Silva ready to come in for Brazil.

68:03 Ronaldo and Ze Bob with a good combination play that just doesn’t work. Story of this game, really.

66:56 Brazil startint to roll it around and play keep away. I prefered playing hide and go seek when I was a kid but whatever floats your boat.

65:35 The Brazil coach looks like how I felt in the first half when my bladder was about to explode.

64:16 Not much sign of a beautiful game out there. Paging beautiful game. If you are in the building please report to Munich ASAP.

63:34 There are a lot of sleepy people in Australia right now trying to will their boys on despite it being 3 in the morning and a work day.

62:45 Bob Carlos runs down a pass from Emerson in the box but Craig Moore clears it away.

61:12 Other than the goal to start the half Brazil hasn’t done much with Adriano and Ronaldo not working well up front. Would expect to see Robinho soon.

59:56 No wonder Brazil is off their game. Maradona is in the crowd. No Beckenbauer sighting yet. How could he miss this one?

59:15 The corner is cleared but brought right back in by Emerton who shows no fear with a shot that goes wide. Must say I have been impressed with Australia today. Not so impressed with Brazil but the expectations are higher for them.

57:45 I love the crowd whistle when there is a pass back to the keeper. Music to my ears. I like to whistle along. Australia coming back with the attack gets a corner.

56:10 Kewell misses a wide open net as Viduka interferes with Dida. Again, should have done better than that.

55:45 Mile Sterjovski with a blast over the Brazil goal and Dida points to his beautiful eye. Australia showing signs of working their way back into the game after being stunned with an early second half goal.

54:12 Mark Bresciano with a break away run for Australia but he waits to long to shoot it. Should have done better than that.

52:34 Adriano holding his ankle after delivering a dodgy pass to Ronaldo. The Brazil attack is on with Ronaldinho doing a little behind the back pass to Bob Carlos. Corner kick is punched away.

51:45 The goal seems to have woken up Brazil’s players who were sleepwalking in the first half.

50:56 Brazil attacking again. This will be a real test of the Aussie mettle after they played such a solid first half.

50:05 That was Ronaldo showing patience. Instead of trying to beat two players he found the open Adriano who hit it where the keeper couldn’t get it.

48:35 GOALLLLL!!! Adriando takes a pass from Ronaldo and hit drills in on the ground into the net. Just like that the champs are on top.

48:15 Australia contuing to show a lot of poise. Wish I could say the same about myself. I’m running out of Ronaldo overweight jokes.

47:04 Neither side has made any changes at halftime. The referee has rediscovered how to use the whistle and is making the game choppy at the start.

45:34 Ronaldo falls down and the ground shakes. How long will he be out there before Robinho comes on?

45:01 We’re underway in the second half with the two leaders of Group F playing another 45 for the heck of it. The winner gets a ticket to the next round. Does Australia have what it takes to pull off the upset? I am willing to wager we will know the answer to that question by the end of this half. Thanks for your patience with me during the first half. My bladder is firing at 100% now and the computer chair samba has stopped. Hope your bladder feels peachy wherever you are in this wonderful world.

Halftime After 45 minutes the two teams are tied. Not the best game but the fact that Australia is hanging around and playing Brazil straight up should make for an excellent second half. I’m going to the little boy’s room and will be back before the start of the second half. Go ahead and leave your thoughts on the first half. Comments make the world go round.

44:35 Kaka with a strong run and he is denied at the end by Emerton.

43:23 Corner kick for the land down under. It doesn’t work and Brazil runs the other way where it also doesn’t happen. So far this game is all about it not happening. Poetry, I know.

41:45 It was around this time last game when Kaka scored for Brazil. A dangerous time for Australia with Ronaldo hitting a stike that goes wide. He has been more active this game but looks winded.

40:02 Mark Bresciano coming on for Tony Popovic. An offensive substition for the Socceroos as the magic water can’t heal Popovic.

38:28 Culina picks up a yellow card for a high tackle. Popovic on the ground getting some magic water. Kaka guzzling water on the side. All this talk of water is making things worse on my bladder.

38:02 Australia continuing to hang around and Brazil isn’t creating much. The Socceroos seem to have 5-6 players lined up at the box at all times. Clogging things up for the Brazil attack.

36:23 Starting to really samba in my seat. Not sure if I can make it another ten minutes without a restroom break. I’ve learned to never take my eyes off a Brazil game cause they can strike at any time.

35:15 Brazil defense looking well organized but maybe that is because nobody from Australia is making any runs off the ball.

33:52 The chant of Ole goes out in the crowd as the fans in Munich are hoping for something interesting to happen. Aren’t we all….

32:23 Stating the obvious but Australia must be pleased with how things are going so far in this game. This tournament is shaping up nicely in their favor.

30:34 Ronaldo called offside. He boots the ball in frustration at the goal and he is shown a yellow. Maybe his ears don’t work or is it the dizzyness/fever/blisters?

29:56 I love how Ze in the comments is calling Argentina the favorite. Brazil is happy to shed that label. They aren’t playing like favorites today.

28:42 Cafu takes down Cahill and he is rewarded with a yellow. He proceeds to shake the referee’s hand and flash his broken smile.

27:16 Ronaldinho with a little chip to Ronaldo in the box and he earns a corner, which is grabbed by the Australia keeper. A brief flash of magic there/

26:12 Culina with a shot that Dida swallows up. Credit to Australia for a good quarter hour against a Brazil team that isn’t firing on all cylinders.

25:15 Ze Bob is fouled and Brazil with the quick start. Ronaldinho magically falls over the ball. That was a Nike commercial waiting to happen, yet he looked oddly mortal.

23:12 The only samba going on is in my chair. I need to use the little boy’s room. Poor drinking effort on my part. Still scoreless. Brazil not looking unstoppable.

22:34 Australia rolling it around like they are Brazil in disguise. Viduka called offside. Adriano taken down. I didn’t even realize Adriano was playing. He sure does disappear a lot in this offense.

20:24 Ronaldinho with a run up the middle and he falls down. No call. That was the correct decision. We see a little burst from Ronaldinho finally. Bob Carlos drills it over the bar as he is wont to do.

19:34 Cahill might be the hero but he sure whines a lot. Just play, lad.

18:15 Ronaldinho with the free kick and the players are getting testy in the box. Ronaldo looking grumpy. The ball is cleared away. Temperature seems to be rising but it might just be this Angola flag I insist on wearing at all times.

16:56 I’ll admit to being mildly attracted to Dida. There, I said it.

16:23 Australia playing straight up with the five time champions. Good on them for not showing fears. Isn’t that an Australian expression? Good on ya…

15:21 Ronaldo held up and the box and he is robbed of the ball. Even if he were in shape he wouldn’t beat three defenders with his back to the goal. That bright side of the stadium is hurting my eyes.

14:15 Bob Carlos heads it out and Australia gets a corner, which is then blown dead because Cahill looks like he is crying. Didn’t know that was against the rules.

12:15 Australia defense doing a good job of holding up Brazil outside the box. Merk hands out a yellow to Emerton for saying something not very nice.

11:12 Brazil hasn’t scored yet. By this point Argentina would have put in four.

10:02 Mark Schwarzer looking like he is going to crap his pants with Bob Carlos over the ball. He hits it high and long and off the mark. Never trust a man named Bob.

8:57 There is no truth to the rumor that Google will own WCB with an Australia win. Free kick to Brazil after Ronaldo hits the turf like an oak falling over.

7:45 Not an especially physical game up to this point. Australia taking their chances. Corner kick to the Socceroos.

6:32 Australia stringing some passes together. It looks like a lot of work when they do that. When Brazil has the ball it doesn’t look so difficult.

5:35 Viduka with a shot on goal and Dida swallows it like Ronaldo eating a meat pie. I heard that Dida is being pursued by Manchester United. I am not being pursued by ESPN. Sad, but at least I get to liveblog the best matches for World Cup Blog.

3:34 Cahill, the hero from last game, hits a shot that almost nails the corner flag. I could have done better and I am sitting in Berlin sipping on a beer.

2:35 Ronaldo with a nifty kick over his head to Kaka who just misses to the left of the goal. That was a nice pass from the big man.

1:54 Ronaldinho with the free kick from the right side and it is cleared out. Every time he steps over the ball my heart skips a beat.

1:13 Errant pass by Ze Roberto who I think should be known as Ze Bob.

:54 Brazil rolling the ball around. Expect a lot of that this game with Australia content to pick its spots on the counter.

0:13 German referee Markus Merk in charge of this one. He is one of the better referees in the world if you ask me, which you didn’t.

Kickoff We are underway from Munich with the two leaders in Group F squaring off. The winner is assured a place in the second round. Brazil going with its starting lineup from the first game. Three changes for Australia as Guus Hiddink juggles his team’s card accumulations. Thank you for joining me for this game. Your comments are greatly appreciated. Keep them clean, love one another and enjoy an exciting match.

Pregame

4 minute countdown: It is Australia’s turn to sing and be proud. The Socceroos have their hands over their hearts. They are singing to varying degrees. The crowd is bursting it out. A great moment for the nation continent.

6 minute countdown: The Brazil anthem is played. Pity the poor fans staring directly into the sun. The tournament holders look confident as there nation’s song is played. Roberto Carlos is smaller than I thought. 5′6″

8 minute countdown: The teams are lining up in the tunnel. Brazil is wearing its yellow shirts and blue shorts. Australia adorned in dark blue kits. What a thrill it must be for the little kid who gets to hold Ronaldinho’s hand. Some day I will be that kid.

12 minute countdown: They are showing scenes from the celebration following Australia’s win against Japan. That must have been one wild party in Sydney. Can only imagine the scene there if the Socceroos can pull off a shocker and defeat Brazil.

15 minute countdown: Boris Becker is the guest studio analyst on the German station showing the game. He looks like he could go out and play five sets in the Australian Open. He is a big footie fan. They are showing shots of the stadium and it is all yellow and green. Can only tell the fans apart by the inflatible kangaroos.

18 minute countdown: It is a beautiful day in Germany with low humidity and not much heat. Should be perfect weather for football. The sun is out on one sliver of the field but the dreaded shadow should not rear its ugly head in this match in Munich as the day turns to night.

20 minute countdown: Great to see some Aussie fans joining us for the match. I hope you have worked out your excuse for why you won’t be going to work tomorrow. I’ve had a chance to get to know both Australia and Brazil fans here in Germany and have really had a lot of fun with both. Chris in Munich reports the atmosphere outside the stadium has been a giant party. I would expect nothing less with these supporters.

25 minute countdown: So if you are a Brazil fan like my friend Ze down there in the comments, are you nervous about this game or is this just a chance for your team to work out the kinks? The pressure really isn’t on Brazil with the way this group is shaping up. Will this be an opportunity for them to break out the beautiful game or will we see another business like performance like we saw against Croatia?

30 minute countdown: I’m enjoying my traditional pregame liveblogging meal of Nutella and beer. By the end of this competition I will look like Ronaldo, only my fingers will be stronger than his. I’m sure I won’t be the only one keeping an eye on Brazil’s #9 to see if he has any magic left in that large body. Mark Viduka packs it on too so this game gives hope to all who are horizontally challenged.

35 minute countdown: Starting lineups as posted by Amanda (Thanks!) in the comments. Guus does make changes after all. Smart considering the Japan-Croatia result makes that Croatia match critical for the Socceroos if they don’t win tonight. Starting XI’s:

AUSTRALIA: Mark Schwarzer; Brett Emerton, Lucas Neill, Craig Moore, Tony Popovic, Scott Chipperfield; Jason Culina, Vince Grella, Tim Cahill, Mile Sterjovski; Mark Viduka.

BRAZIL: Dida; Cafu, Lucio, Juan, Roberto Carlos; Emerson, Ze Roberto, Kaka, Ronaldino; Adriano, Ronaldo.

40 minute countdown: Austalia carries a number of yellow cards into this match but coach Guus Hiddink has said he will go with his starters regardless of cards. Brazil’s coaches and players have said that they won’t be bothered if the Socceroos try to play a physical match. We’ll have to see if the referee calls a tight match or if he lets the teams play. The way this tournament is going it will be a tightly called game.

50 minute countdown: Our man on the scene in Munich Chris reports a sea of yellow and green entering the stadium as both teams’ supporters have shown up in full force for what could be a decisive match in Group F. After the tie between Japan and Croatia, the door has been left open for the Socceroos to advance to the knockout stages.

Pregame: Will the defending champions play like champions or will Australia pull off the upset?

Australia coach Guus Hiddink has made three changes to his starting XI to face Brazil in the Group F clash in Munich with Harry Kewell and Marco Bresciano among those to start the game on the bench.

Kewell, Bresciano and Luke Wilkshire – who all started against Japan – make way for Tim Cahill, Mile Sterjovski and Tony Popovic.

Hiddink previously declared that Australia will be chasing a result against the world champions and finally put an end to speculation that he may not risk players carrying yellow cards in to the game – such as Moore and Grella.

Brazil boss Carlos Alberto Parreira has named an unchanged side to the one that defeated Croatia in its opening group game.

    Starting XI’s:

AUSTRALIA: Mark Schwarzer; Brett Emerton, Lucas Neill, Craig Moore, Tony Popovic, Scott Chipperfield; Jason Culina, Vince Grella, Tim Cahill, Mile Sterjovski; Mark Viduka.

BRAZIL: Dida; Cafu, Lucio, Juan, Roberto Carlos; Emerson, Ze Roberto, Kaka, Ronaldino; Adriano, Ronaldo.

  • The stadium’s speakers are playing Australian music (Midnight Oil). I sense some bias on the World Cup organizers, and demand some brazilian music (Sepultura) to be played instead.

  • Thanks, Amanda. I’ve just heard about it too (on TV). I guess he’s trying to go for a tie or counter-attacks, and saving his players for the game against Croatia. A win there would secure their slot, or even a tie depending on Japan’s performance against Brazil.

  • werttrew99

I have a feeling Brazil is going to hit all cylinders in this game. 4-0 Brazil.

  • http://www.flopearedmule.blogspot.com Amanda

Don’t mean to muscle in on your job ze, just excited .. ;-)

Obviously I’m pulling for an Aussie upset but like the rest of the world I love watching Brazil play so am just hoping for a nice open and exciting game. Also for Australian football I hope they both put on a show that impresses all the casual fans watching tonight (this morning.)

I like the move of starting Cahill, even though he’s on a yellow and the Croatia match could be decisive. It’s a positive move — we’re not going in with the mentality of sitting back and hanging on for a draw.

    God, I’m excited.

  • matilda

But ze – you guys have got your own travelling musicians. We need all the help we can get in that department!

    2) Australia – Japan
    3) Ghana – Czechoslovakia

About Cahill, yes, he’s going for the top. I actually expected him to be on the starting team, given his role on the match against Japan.

However, Sterjovski and Popovic are more defensive players, aren’t them? From that, I’d conclude Hiddink will try to go for counter attacks rather than have the ball for most of the time.. which in itself is a pretty valid strategy.

  • Stuart

    ROOS! ROOS! ROOS!

    …ALWAYS gotta back the underdogs!

  • ab initio

dave, good point. Ghana beating the Czechs was an upset. If the Socerroos hold Brasil to a draw or beat them will be the upset of the world cup.

We should get a good look at how the Brasil hype will actually turn out and if they can match a strong physical game from the Socceroos for the full 90 minutes. If the Socceroos can pressure the Brasil ball handler and the mid-field throughout the game and can make the Brasil defense have to run hard, they could attack the Brasil goal in the last 15 minutes as they seem to have better physical conditioning.

  • matilda

Absolutely with Amanda on this. I’m not that nervous, just excited. Playing Brazil is the ultimate occasion for football fans, no matter the result!

Great team, great fans, great party. Just wish it wasn’t 2am and a work day tomorrow.

Well Matilda, now you know how it feels. The previous World Cup had matches at 5am for us, so it was nearly impossible to properly watch it – that is, with friends, party, and people going crazy on the street. :) That’s why this one is being great – it’s just 12:45 here!

  • http://www.flopearedmule.blogspot.com Amanda

Yes, obviously hanging on for a draw is a good result for us ;-) but if you go into the game with that goal I think that’s dangerous. We had to shore up the suss defence but maintain a positive attitude and Guus has the mix right.

Am I the only one that thinks Gilberto and Cicinho deserve to start ahead of Emerson and Cafu respectively?

  • sooz

earth to aussies: can’t pottty-mouth the ref ,mates!!

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

    not exactly entertaining so far…

  • http://blue2rose.blogspot.com Blah-Me

The pushing around and violence has started!

P.S. Did I forget to mention, I’m actually getting to watch this game! :) I’m so happy!!

  • Griff

um aussie goalie watch where u are u almost ran out of the goal box

  • sooz

sebastian: most defiitely you will see rugby influence here (tactics, style). brilliant, I say! no disrespect to anyone btw, but I believe AUS will force their style rather than adapt. (I am prepared to eat these words later)

  • Jen in Boston

Bob – Dida’s hot. I understand where you’re coming from.

  • Roland

Good defense there for the Aussies. They have to contain Ronaldinho.

  • Roland

I hope this doesn’t end scoreless.

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

    7 fouls already by Australia

  • Roland

Australia not making it easy with all those men in their part of the field. Looks like theiy’re banking on a counterattack game.

    JESUS CHRIST. That was ugly.

  • malik

damnit…i had to come into the office today!!!!! and my stream is not working!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! someone help me out

  • Roland

Luckily for Australia, Ronaldinho slips in the box.

  • Roland

Australia reaching but still shooting at the goal like little girls.

  • Alessandro

zzzzzzzz… Mann.. These brazilian, too much samba last night??

  • Roland

Ronaldinho with a gorgeous flip pass to Ronaldo in the box, but nothing comes of it. Be-a-u-ti-ful.

  • malik

if australia pulls something off, than i wont believe in brazils supremecy anymore

    yellow for Cafu

  • http://blue2rose.blogspot.com Blah-Me

    YELLOW TO BRAZIL!!!

Malik, then don’t. Argentina’s the favorites on this World Cup.

  • Alessandro

there’s no Brazil supremacy… There is Latin supremacy!! Anglosaxon can t follow us…

    Gooooool

Definetely mine! Argentina all the way!!

  • Roland

Latin supremacy? I’ll have what you’re smoking. Way too early.

  • malik

and by the way mr brazil, brazil is heavily favored, that is why they wont win this cup they have to many fine fabrics to make one shirt, they wont weave a nice shirt this time

  • Roland

    mohan: which favors Australia.

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

30 mins of dull drab game

  • Alessandro

Argentina is very seducing this year… It’s time for Tango dancing to take up on Samba’s twilight

  • Alessandro

    Latin supremacy:

    World title.

    Brazil = 5
    Italy = 3
    Argentina = 2
    Uruguay = 2

like I said we rule that sport…

  • anmedprez

with the fouls being called FIFA has turned this into a girls game. let them play on

  • Jonathan

i will tell you this right now there is no way brazil is taking this cup.

  • http://sports.godblessthefreaks.org Philip

I’m seriously torn here…. I can honestly claim Brasil as my second-favorite team, but a loss or tie here would undeniably be a Good Thing for the chances (admittedly slim) of my first-favorite team. Plus i feel an affinity for the ‘roos — from a country where soccer is considered an “immigrant sport” an ignored in favor of the local football variant. Mostly I want to see a good game, and in principle I want to see Brasil win — but if they lose it won’t bother me as much as it would ordinarily.

  • http://blue2rose.blogspot.com Blah-Me

I think Australia is doing mighty well!!

    Brazil not living up!

And my stream is breaking!! STOP IT!! I wanna watch this match!! *cries*

  • Roland

Australia doesn’t know what to do when they reach Brazil’s goal. They won’t score anything, unless it’s a penalty kick.

  • malik

someone give me a link to a stream!!!!! please!!!!!!!!!!! im at the office, and i couldnt get a link!please

    How sad.

  • Roland

Three touches, but Brazil just misses…

  • Jonathan

i agree brazil will probably take this game but against better teams in the next round they will lose if they play like this.

  • http://blue2rose.blogspot.com Blah-Me

Such a good chance gone to waste!!

  • Alessandro

    too static

  • matilda

Timmy Cahill is The Weetbix Kid down here (it’s a breakfast cereal he promotes). Aged 26 but looks closer to 12. That may explain why he looks like he wants to cry and call his Mum to take him home? Bursting with talent but runs around like a chicken with his head cut off half the time!

Schwarzer looks quite fetching in red doesn’t he? Not as hot as Neill in navy blue though.

Sorry. Just trying to fill in time. Dum-dee-dum.

  • Moe

Time to replace Ronaldo. He is not doing anything.

  • Roland

    Australia better watch those autogoals…

  • http://blue2rose.blogspot.com Blah-Me

malik.. pick one of the many streams here..

    http://livefooty.doctor-serv.com

  • mace

my prediction: Brazil will win, in fact, Brazil should win. But there will be a goal from Cahill for Aussie.

I admit I admire that cahill guy :p

  • Jen in Boston

Agreed, Roland. Australia’s challenging them well defensively, but can’t seem to set up their own shots at Brazil’s goal. They’re just taking too many long and weak shots.

Brazil remind me of England – lots of talented players but just aren’t putting together their A game. They gotta do better than this if they want to win the big enchilada.

Well, at least Ronaldo is moving. Brazil isn’t doing well on this match, but he’s not doing as bad as he did against Croatia (which looked like a much better team btw).

  • http://sports.godblessthefreaks.org Philip

    Re malik:

[Brasil] have to many fine fabrics to make one shirt,

That’s usually the case with the Seleção. The coaches who succeed are the ones who get that many stars to play together effectively. Parreira, of course, has done this before… but they sure don’t look that effective right now.

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

i am panicking now…will it be a goalless Sunday?

Okey, that’s more like it… still not in tough.

  • Roland

Ronaldo with a near miss from mid distance.

  • chikin

Bob – Poor dribbling. Teams pissing away chances. But either team could explode at any time. Just one good release and the relief of having scored should open up the game.

What’s this about having to go?

  • Jonathan

they are not stringing passes together everyone is going one on one. A team with too many stars. As i say it they finally do put some passes together.

  • thom

No TV or radio here, so I can’t say much about the game.
Bob seems to be in top form though. should make for an entertaining affair !

guys, it’s the first-half! I’ve learnt my lesson since few weeks before never judge anything on THE FIRST HALF.

Except for the match the Argentinian in :p

  • Roland

Kaka is breathtaking, but still nothing…

  • Jonathan

kaka is the most in form brazil player in this tournament.

  • http://blue2rose.blogspot.com Blah-Me

    But no guarantees!

  • Roland

OHHHHHH, Australia with it’s best effort by far. BUT STILL NOTHING.

Nooooo…. a 0-0 at the first half is everything we didn’t want. :/

  • tuanny

Counting yesterday’s Italy-US game, it’s 4 straight halves without a goal… Australia will be happy to extend it for another half. Not so Brazil.

The question is, Should Brazil take Ronaldo out for the entire second half?

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

We didn’t see much of Roberto Carlos

  • mace

hmm, maybe i should wait until it’s 20 min before full-time, then will i see Brazil played like Brasil and not Bra . kidding, Brazil i mean.

nope, that doesnt work either but thanks so much for the help

im gonna get outta here soon, and make it home for the south korea game…..btw, south korea is winning this one, lol, im serious though

  • http://radix-lecti.blogspot.com Prashanth

Brazil needs Robinho for sure. Almost every single player in the Brazilian team has been ineffective !

  • matilda

    Half Time.

We’re doing really well to hold off Brazil, disrupt their rhythm and close down their favoured style of play. I know it’s not exciting to watch but we can’t match them for flair, so our best option is to cramp the selecao style.

Can anyone tell me how this game against the Socceroos was being viewed in Brazil? An easy win, a tough game etc. Just curious.

  • ab initio

the socceroos have a real chance to win this game. their defense is solid and their attack is showing many open spaces in the brasil defense. brasil doesn’t have the energy or mid-field game and only getting very poor shots on goal. this is not a champ[ionship team. only luck will get them through.

  • http://www.soccerati.net/hiddink-dont-be-too-ambitious/ Milo Riano

I just talked that Guus should not be overly ambitious. C’mon Brazil wake up…

I guess everybody knows about Hiddink and the mental strength of the bloody Aussies!

  • History

Australia, luck has served you well thus far, but the breather ends now! SO LONG SOCCERWHOS!

  • Ali Siddiqui

I wouldn’t mind seeing an upset. It’d be a great way to make the more larger teams realize they still need to play the game to win. ;)

  • vic

OK here we go, second half. I wonna see some chemistry between Adriano nad Ronakdo. OK it’s starting.

  • http://sports.godblessthefreaks.org Philip

    malik,

I haven’t been following your TV woes that closely, but are you not able to make TVU work? It’s worked like a charm for me.

Also i plan to take the steps described in How to mask your IP… so I can watch Globo or BBC but I haven’t done this yet.

  • Alex E

I think Brazil’s playing it cautiously. I’ve been worried about them coming out overly confident, but it seems they’re taking it easy up front and playing it safe in the back, waiting for an opportune opening.

We all know what they can do, as do they, and I doubt they’d have much trouble pulling themselves out given a socceroo goal. In the end, it’s more important to win than it is to play pretty.

  • Tom

I knew that this would be close. The Brazilians dont look good enough to win the WC… yet

  • http://blue2rose.blogspot.com Blah-Me

    Ahlan and welcome Ali!!

Australia is pulling off very well. Very very good defence! Not as good at the attcking end though. They need to work on that.

But yea, you dint miss much of the action.

Oh you missed Ronaldo being pissy. I think it was something that one of the Aussies said to him on the field.

Oh and I’m getting a good stream. I’m actually getting to watch this game. Feel happy for me. :p

    Razz,

That sucks about your ABC station. (I’m assuming we’re talking about the US ABC, not the Australian ABC, since you’re listed as posting from the US.)

You should call some of that station’s advertisers and tell them how unhappy you are. Also call the producers of the infomercial and tell them that it’s convinced you not to buy their product.

  • http://www.atmysports.com jack

i want germany to see with brazil in finals , and germany score winning goal at the last sixth minute.

can you imagine The host nation

last goat at 6 th minute

    and they are the winners.

    wish my words come true

  • http://www.pierretristam.com Pierre’s Total Football

So we get a nice flash on the pitch from both sides, but now we’re back to middling play: when is Brazil going to wake up? They’re not playing with the kind of instinctive all-konwingness expected of them. Again and again, the Brazilians expect the other player to begin a play (except Ronladinho, who’s been on it at every opportunity), but the other doesn’t show. When they do have the ball, they work it ploddingly enough to the Australian end, the Aussies’ midfield being weaker than advertised despite its numbers (it’s the back line that finally puts up the wall), but crosses don;t find their man, like thsi one here: a pass dumped on the near side of the box, a wide open chance, but Ronaldo was–you guessed it, two steps behind getting there. This is not Ronaldo. This is a Kagemusha-styled impostor playing football.

  • Ali Siddiqui

    LOL! I’m cursing your stream Blah-Me. ;)

  • http://www.pierretristam.com Pierre’s Total Football

Brazil is playing like England, and its about to get a second victory just as England did: not quite deservedly.

  • Ali Siddiqui

Malik, sorry I didn’t see your question! Yes that link I put up is only an audio only stream (like a radio) from The Sun. Sorry no video or images.

  • matilda

Looks like Hiddink is going goal-chasing with a sub off the bench, like Aloisi, and switching the Aussies to a more offensive style. That’s what he did against Japan when we were down 1-0 …but that’s more dangerous to do against Brazil.

We’re getting shots on goal but that means nothing if we can’t finish.

ooh Robinho on. Ronaldo off. Worrying for us!

  • http://blue2rose.blogspot.com Blah-Me

    And RONALDO goes OUT!

    hehe..

    ;) Don’t worry Blah-Me I wouldn’t do that! Hehehe.

  • http://blue2rose.blogspot.com Blah-Me

Kaka.. in my language is “uncle” sorta.

  • sam

Australia on attack looks about as threatening as a bunch of old men in wheelchairs.

  • http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/worldcupfan/ dw

You know, in my part of America, Kaka sounds like a colloquial term for, um, baby body waste.

  • http://sports.godblessthefreaks.org Philip

    matilda,

The nice thing about the 0-0 between the other two teams today is, it frees up Australia to not worry so much about goal differential. Tie HRV and, assuming Japan doesn’t beat Brasil, you’re through to the second round. Lose to HRV and the GD wouldn’t have mattered against Brasil. May as well go for the draw here and if you lose 3-0, well, no worries.

  • http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/worldcupfan/ dw

Brazil really needs to practice together more and start playing the football we know is in them.

Australia is doing well holding them off, but they’re going to need to push it on Thursday if they’re going to beat Croatia.

  • Ali Siddiqui

Poor Kaka, no love for his name. I wonder if his parents loved crows? :o

Bob Carlos and Ze Bob :)

    good one.

dw: well, it depends on how it’s spoken. “Cáca” is the name for that in Brazil too. However, his nickname is “Kaká”, as in “Cacá”, so it sounds pretty different. It’s the same difference as “Cocô” (shit) and “Côco” (coconut).

  • Roland

That would have been the prettiest goal of the cup so far. Pity for Australia…

  • http://www.pierretristam.com Pierre’s Total Football

I’d like to say that they’re playing as if they’re embarrassed to have just one goal, but Brazil just turned-over the ball embarrassingly, as it has all day. Meanwhile Australia goes artistic on Brazil’s ass.

Is it that the accent is on the last syllable (ka-KAAA), or is the á pronounced differently from a?

Portugese isn’t a popular language here in the States. Vasco de Gama made a left at the Canary Islands.

  • tuanny

another yellow… How many so far?

There goes my 3-1 prediction… Think I have better luck predicting how many yellows handed out each game lol.

  • http://sports.godblessthefreaks.org Philip

    Ali,

    From Wikipedia:

An internet discussion forum explains the nickname as a commonly used shortened form of “Ricardo” in Portuguese. Kaká is supposed to have got his nickname because his little brother Rodrigo could not pronounce the word “Ricardo” when they were young. Rodrigo called his older brother “Caca” which the latter later changed to “Kaká”.

    What luck! Unbeleivable.

Come on Australia, you can do it.

138 yellow cards so far in the tournament.

  • Ali Siddiqui

Philip, thanks! That lil’ tid bit of info makes it easier to understand now. Gotta love family pet names, eh? :D

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

Aussies should be proud of their performance, even if they lose

  • http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/worldcupfan/ dw

“Too many posts being hit…makes one wonder if there is a magnet in those balls?”

This will be lost on every non-American here, but I’m noticing that the Teamgeist is moving less like a curveball and more like a slider. It has this extra bend at the end of the flight.

  • Jen in Boston

    Fred!!!! Yes!

  • Ali Siddiqui

    Go Fred!!

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

the yellow card score is 2-2

  • Jodido

Is Aus playing that good, or is Brazil playing that bad? Man, their game is not beautiful at all.

Good game, Aus. You deserve a draw. Need good finishing!

  • http://www.pierretristam.com Pierre’s Total Football

The way Brazil are playing (less inspiringly than Italy yesterday) is good news for the Americans,, should they advance: this is the team the US will face, and at this point it has to be said: the Brazilians are eminently beatable by ANY team having the game of its life.

  • http://sports.godblessthefreaks.org Philip

Ah, it’s Fred! My favorite player name on Brasil’s team. I almost picked him in that Yahoo fantasy game just because I thought it’d be funny to have a Brasilian named Fred (pronounced more or less Frejji) on my team.

  • Ali Siddiqui

dw, yeah I’ve been reading about that. One of the many reasons goalies hate these new balls…goes one way and then ZOOM it curves away.

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

but Australia have committeed 22 fouls

  • Roland

    GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLL BRRAAAZIIIILLLL!!!

  • Moe

    GOAL!

  • http://www.atmysports.com jack

    goallllllllllll

  • Ali Siddiqui

    GOOOOOOAL FOR FRED!!!! :D

  • http://blue2rose.blogspot.com Blah-Me

    GOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAALLLLLLL!!

  • tuanny

    FRED SCORED!!!!!

  • http://sports.godblessthefreaks.org Philip

    Goooooool by Fred!

  • Jen in Boston

    Fred makes a goal!

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

    Robinho’s goal actually …

Well, who could have predicted FRED of all people would play, much less score.

Seriously. I’m sorry, but move on Ronaldo. The team is so much better with Robinho on.

  • http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/worldcupfan/ dw

    FRED!!!!!!

Man, does he have jets FOR Brazil.

  • Moe

How long has Fred been in the game when he scored?

Is it faster than SA Sami Al Jaber’s goal? Only 2 minutes after he entered.

  • Roland

Like I was saying, when they play poorly, they win by a little. But Australia has given them a hell of a match and had it’s chances.

The great teams finish when they must.

  • Ali Siddiqui

Ah the Virgin Touch! Bravo Fred!

  • http://blue2rose.blogspot.com Blah-Me

The end for Australia. Please score 1! Please oh pleas Aussies!!

  • Trav

This means that the land of the rising sun is still alive!

  • http://sports.godblessthefreaks.org Philip

Tough result for AUS, they certainly deserved a point I thought.

  • Jodido

Bad finishing (and looks like fatigue in the last 5 minutes) hurt Aus. Good game, ‘Roos, you should have had a draw here.

Good luck against Croatia, hope you advance.

  • Alessandro

    Start packing Australia

  • tuanny

How could a Brazilian be called Fred? lol

Could he be of Italian parentage, be called Fred instead of Freddo? I know there’s lots of Italians migrate to Brazil before.

  • http://sports.godblessthefreaks.org Philip

    Roland,

When they play poorly in the group stages, they win by a little. When they play poorly against a good team, Brasil’s in serious trouble.

  • Roland

    My Blue Samurai live! KAMPAI!

Australia lucky not to go out 3 – 0 now.

  • http://blue2rose.blogspot.com Blah-Me

And its all over for Australia. But they can go home with pride. They were REALLY good! Had some really good close chances too!! Sorry Aussies!

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

Brazil still unimpressive..they can’t win the cup

  • Alessandro

    YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

    Brazil 2 -0 Pussies

  • http://sports.godblessthefreaks.org Philip

    tuanny,

Apparently his full name is Frederico Chaves Guedes.

Well, that was a hard match, with some tense moments at times… Ronaldo tried, but seriously, the team got much more alive at the team.

Kudos to Australia, they tried hard.

  • Roland

Philip, I hope you’re right, because that good team is likely to be Spain this time around…

  • http://sports.godblessthefreaks.org Philip

All AUS needs is a draw against HRV. As I mentioned above, the 2-0 hurts them a lot less because of HRV dropping points to Japan.

  • Ali Siddiqui

I think it’s time to keep Ronaldo off the field for a while to get back to fitness. But wow! Fred, what a way to finish the match. Virgin Touch for him.

  • http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/worldcupfan/ dw

    “My Blue Samurai live! KAMPAI!”

Yeah, but I don’t think that Japan could beat Brazil even if they picked up Ichiro.

  • Ali Siddiqui

See you in the France vs. South Korea match! :D

  • matilda

    Crap again!

Oh well, congrats to Brazil and their nice cyberspace fans. I’m still very proud of the Socceroo boys today. Ranked 42 in the world, 32 years out of the World Cup… we failed but we tried!

Now that Brazil have their 6 points – does this mean they’ll cruise against Japan? Hope not. We need a draw or a win against Croatia to get through.

  • Trapper

Unless Japan beats Brazil a draw v Croatia will see us through to the 2nd round.

Very proud of the Aussies for putting so much pressure on the Brazilians while it was 1-0.

  • http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/worldcupfan/ dw

Australia’s not done. If Croatia and Australia play like each of them did today, the Aussies will go through.

Of course, Thursday is a ways away in footie terms.

  • Bidemi

    Solid victory Brasil.

  • mace

this is a day of history for fred. from the funniest name to a goal :p

  • matilda

I meant the nice fans … minus Alessandro.

  • gm

brazil still not as good as argentina…maybe its just me,but i sort of feel they’re playing like ghana…u know,no really having the “killer” mentality, but wining none-the-less

  • Jen in Boston

Fred is now my favorite WC player. I’m in the Fred fan club.

  • Alex E

    Phillip,

The point is, they’re playing it wise and saving themselves for the competition.

Brazilians –as I would hope do most Selecao fans– know what Brazil is about. The rest of the world –and nike– should be the wiser…

  • norm

Was that team Australia were playing a part of the Brazilian olympic team? Perhaps the diving squad!!! :-)

They should enter them in the olympics…a couple of gold medals for sure!

  • diego

Brazil with only a few flashes of what they could be if they get it together. Hearty performance by Australia. To their credit they played Brazil straight up and they managed several good chances. I hope they beat Croatia and advance.

  • Ali Siddiqui

Kudos to the Australian team and fans. Really, they put up a big fight! Hope to see you guys in the next round!

  • Roland

Yeah, Japan is still screwed. Perhaps if Godzilla shows up at Brazil’s training camp?

  • Jen in Boston

Holy crap. Lalas (?) just said of Ronaldo, “That’s the last time I’m sticking up for that bloated waste of space.”

  • Ali Siddiqui

Jen, your kidding me? Harsh words for Ronaldo? I fear he may become the next Maradona. :(

  • paddy

Well it’s the reality check we had to have.
Oz simply can’t blow that many chances and expect to win (or even get a point).
Hope the roos can regroup and beat Croatia.

  • mace

and I am still in the Cahill Fan Club. Didnt see much of him today, did we?

    Diego: that is true.

I’m surely gonna root for them against Croatia.

    GO AUSTRALIA! KEEP LEFT!

  • Jen in Boston

Ali, Lalas really did say that. (I think it was Lalas – he wasn’t on the screen when he said it). Brent Musberger was all CYA trying to soften what Lalas said. You don’t hear that kind of thing too often on tee vee.

  • arcturus

Aside from the score. One of the reasons I love football in general, and Brazilian football in particular: the beautiful nuances of play. Kaka is wonderful; Ronaldinho is wonderful.

  • matilda

mace – Looks like Hiddink took Cahill off because he’s on a yellow and didn’t want to risk losing him for the Croatia game.

Oh dear, 4am. My cue to leave I think…

  • Ali Siddiqui

Hahaha! Oh my. How the mighty have fallen.

  • Ali Siddiqui

Bye bye until the next match *poof* ;)

good try to stop that last one but our Reds player could just not do it. way to fight for the win AUS! best of luck on thursday where it appears that only 2 players from @ squad play for the same team (viduka, boksic – middlesborough). AUS predominantely on english teams and CRO mostly on german. is this all important at the end of the day? sometimes!!

  • http://www.pertinentverge.blogspot.com Darkoze

A great day for all of the Freds of the world. WHen they were handing out names to the players, how far back in the queue was Fred? Like in Venezuela?

  • eltomas

…Parreira needs to realize what Aragones realized with Raul, is good for Ronaldo to play as many minutes as possible, but is not good for brazil…

  • Chakan

once again robinho proves im right, Brazil is a totally different team, when robinho is playing, i think its his attitude on field, running, passing, dribling etc… make the whole team play better.

when parreira will start to realize that?? when brazil start losing? and then put robinho? then maybe will be already too late.

  • History

    History is never wrong!

  • Trapper

    Thanks ze.

Just don’t lose to Japan, please.

  • eltomas

about robinho, when he entered the game Australia was playing with 3 defenders instead of 5, it was a total different game, more open for the brazilians. However, I agree with you, Ronaldo is playing because of his past and future, because of what he DID(past) or MIGHT do(future), but what matters the most is TODAY, the present…Parreira keeps saying that Brazil is still not 100%, that the team didnt have enough games/time to prepare for the world cup, but neither did argetina or spain.

  • vic

Lot better this time. i think it’ll be robinio/adriano next game. they were great last year against Argent. and it seems to be woking again. robinio, he’s really putting his heart in it. look at this short kid almost jump over the defender. i think we might see a different position for ronaldinio in japan game.

  • http://www.fussballwmblog.de/ Norbert

    Congratulations, Brazil!

  • norm

Yeah, well done Brazil…I think they did deserve to win…but maybe they were not 2 goals better than aus today.

Aus. changed their game in the second half to protect players with yellow cards…and they just didn’t have the finishing class of Brazil.

Unlike some others here, I think Brazil played better today than against Croatia…Aus. made them play better!

  • http://sports.godblessthefreaks.org Philip

    Zé,

Australians may be amused to hear that you’ll be “rooting” for their team. :-D

    (See http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=root…)

You’ve helped me a ton with Portuguese so I figured I better point this out, hehe.

Thanks as always on your commentary about Brazil.

  • http://sports.godblessthefreaks.org Philip

    Alex E,

This is true — but that’s a fascinating topic to me, the question of holding back versus peaking too soon, etc. Sometimes it backfires on the traditional powers (e.g. Italy ending up in the 1/8-final against Korea). As long as you can play well enough to win your group and not exert yourself, as Brasil appears to be doing, that “just enough” philosophy can work.

Philip – heh, thanks. :) I guess I’ll start *cheering* for them now…

  • enzo

Well done Australia, played far better than many expected, equal if not better than Brazil in first half, but 2nd half Brazil’s better positional play gave them two easy goals. Australia had four similar chances in 1st half but lacked the firepower to convert. Considering the disrespectful assessment of Australia at the beginning of the cup, so-called experts critical of Australia cannot claim Brazil, on current form, are supreme.

  • Marc

Ronaldo is not fit for the world cup .. may be he can play in my BarbeQue game.. That’s if he doewsn’t eat all my ribs

  • CTL

Australia is more than equal to Brazil at less than its best. The only difference is the classy finishing – Adriano’s well-taken goal and Robinho’s shot that rebounded kindly to Fred.

If it were a Brazilian (or Tim Cahill, for that matter) at the end of Harry Kewell’s two great chances, it would have been a goal.

Australia might finish ahead of Croatia, but I don’t see them competing against the likes of Argentina, Holland or even Ghana.

  • Divya(India)

Both played well & both the side defending was strong, but ultimately the Brazil had scored the goal, though Brazil scored the goal Ronaldo’s performance was not satisfied. But Australia cannot compete this team at any cause, there is only one possible team who can compete with Brazil i.e. Argentina…let us see if they can Beat …..in the rest of the games.Good luck.
