Liveblog: Argentina vs. Germany

Germans clinical from the spot as always. Lehmann the hero as Germany comes from behind to defeat Argentina and progress to the semi-finals in Dortmund.

Final: Argentina 1-1 Germany AET 2-4 on Penalties

Argentina penalty #4 – Cambiasso! Lehmann saves! He was due as he’d been picking the correct way all night. Lehmann is the hero. Cambiasso misses his penalty and Argentina are going home. Germany through to the semi-finals.

Germany penalty #4 – Borowski scores! Strong, confident penalty.

Argentina penalty #3 – Maxi Rodriguez with a good penalty right in the corner. Lehmann guessed correctly. Only a matter of time before he gets another save.

Germany penalty #3 – Podoloski scores! Hit to the lower right. Nice penalty.

Argentina penalty #2: Ayala the goal scorer. He misses! Lehmann smothers a weak penalty. The crowd erupts. Poor penalty.

Germany penalty #2: Ballack is next. He buries his penalty and inspires his team.

Argentina penalty #1: Cruz steps up. Lehmann guesses right but it’s in the top left corner.

Germany penalty #1: Neuville, the veteran. He scores! Great strike to the right side. Blasts it home, even though Franco guessed correctly.

Kahn comes over to Lehmann and has some words in his ear. Good to see those team-mates together. Germany has never lost on penalties in the World Cup. That’s a tough statistic to beat.

Franco has the chance to be the hero of the bench. First choice Argentina keeper hurt.

Extra time Full-time: We’re done. Penalties will follow. Lehmann vs Franco. Who will be the hero. Who will be the Swiss?

119:55 – Not much injury time to be played here. Looks like penalties.

118:37 – Ballack is definitely struggling. Limping around and not getting involved. Bad news. Cruz earns a free kick after the huge striker is beat up by tiny Lahm. How does that work?

117:56 – Odonkor leans on an Argentine player who falls over. The ref says play on and Germany breaks down the right. It comes to nothing. Argentina comes down the other end and Tevez gets a shot away but it is way over the bar. He must be very tired with all the running he’s done today.

116:11 – Frings falls over Heinze and earns a free kick. There was no contact at all.

115:21 – Ballack receiving attention on the sidelines. Germany will need him. Might be that calf that was bothering him earlier.

113:51 – Friedrich kicks Tevez who’d Cruyff-turned him and earns a booking. It looked like a harsh booking. Certainly a foul, but it was more from tiredness than maliciousness.

112:56 – Coloccini has a strike from outside the area but is never on target. Tired legs will mean more shots from distance.

111:42 – Odonkor nutmegs Sorin on the right wing but his cross is blocked. Frings fouls Cruz hard as the ball breaks towards the middle. No card.

110:15 – Cross by the wild haired Coloccini is cleared for a corner by Frings. The corner is met by Argentine heads, but drifts high over the bar.

108:37 – Germany under more pressure here. They’re struggling to get the ball to feet out of their own half. Odonkor somehow manages to trick himself into getting a cross over but Podolski fouls in the Argentine area.

107:49 – Tevez earns a corner with some nice work down the right wing. Germany clears though Ballack.

106:55 – Argentina with some nice passing around the edge of the German area. This is the way they will score you get the feeling. Short passing around tired German legs.

105:15 – Tevez has the first strike of the second period of extra time. His shot is weak though and Lehmann catches comfortably. At least it was on target.

Extra time half time: Fitness will tell now. Germany looking fresher and more adventurous coming forward. Argentina almost like they’re playing with a man down. I bet they wish they had Messi on the pitch now.

104:39 – Odonkor only knows one way to play. Up the line. He’d be great at indoor cricket.

102:59 – Argentina clawing their way back into the game with some short passing. The game is finely balanced and very tense. One of these teams going home tonight.

100:23 – Argentina break with Maxi but there’s not enough blue shirts to get a shot away after Cruz heads back across the face. Germany break the other way after nice hustle from Ballack who stays down holding his calf. Let’s hope it’s just cramp.

98:21 – Ballack and Ayala having a running battle in the box before the free kick Odonkor earned. Once the ball comes in, Ayala waves an arm in Ballacks face as they were backing away and Ballack falls down in the box. Nice acting, big man.

97:05 – Argentina mount an attack, but the angled ball into the box looking for Cruz is over hit and he has no chance to reel it in.

96:03 – Cruz gets a free kick back after he’s pushed in the back by Metzelder.

95:02 – Cruz booked for an elbow to Lahm’s head. Could have been worse the the big striker.

94:32 – Odonkor loses the ball again. This is getting to be a pattern. Good build-up work from one side of the pitch to the other wasted.

92:45 – Tevez takes a knock to the face after falling into a German knee. Bit of claret, good to see. Pekerman takes the chance to talk to his player as he receives attention on the side of the pitch.

91:44 – Tentative start to extra time. Germany controlling the ball a little more. Borowski has been busy since coming on.

Extra time 90:01 – Germany finishing the game stronger and looking like they have the momentum going into extra time. Argentina will have to dig deep to get themselves back into this game.

Full-time: Extra time awaits us. Argentina looked great after the goal, but then eased off the accelorator. Germany did well to build the pressure before getting their deserved equalizer through Klose. Extra time would seem to favour Germany who’s fitness is widely regarded as impressive. They also have one extra fresh field player after Argentina was forced to replace their goalkeeper.

93:40 – Odonkor is booked for a stupid foul – sliding through the back of Cambiasso in a neutral area of the pitch. Crazy foul and more proof that Odonkor does not know what he’s doing out there.

92:45 – Pace of the game slowed right down now. Neither team wants to make a crucial mistake this close to extra time. Is there a last gasp winner in this game?

91:41 – Beanz means Heinze leaps high but can get no direction on his header. Germany clears.

90:39 – 4 minutes of injury time. Argentina pressing more in the final minutes. Maxi plays it wide to Cruz who’s cross bounces off Frings’ shoulder for a corner.

88:37 – Great save by Lehmann! It would not have counted anyway as Tevez was in an offside position when the ball was headed goalwards. Still, a great save by Lehmann as he would not have known that until afterwards.

87:51 – Maxi Rodriguez gets booked for diving in the box. Lahm looked like he made some contact but Maxi’s legs just collapsed underneath him. Harsh booking perhaps.

86:59 – Odonkor is not very good. He berates Freidrich for his own bad touch.

84:59 – Goal hero Klose is coming off. Neuville takes his place. Not sure I agree with that move unless Klose is feeling the bump he took when he ran into Abbondanzieri. Podolski has been far less effective and now Germany is small up front.

83:35 – All of the sudden this game living up to expectations. Germany’s tail is up, Argentina has used all their subs and will struggle in extra time, if we get that far, with a less creative team on the pitch.

81:38 – Horns and whistles erupting all around Berlin and Germany now. Awesome equalizer for Germany. Klose’s 5th goal and the most important so far. Borowski’s header was a deft touch and Klose’s strength beat Sorin to the ball and he headed home perfectly.

79:47 – GGGGGGGGOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLLL! On the other side of the field, Ballack crosses to Borowski in the box who heads to Klose to slams it hhome from 6 yards with his head. Fantastic goal by Germany.

79:29 – Odonkor dispossesses Sorin on the far side to cries of ‘Wunderbar’ from the commentator.

78:11 – Crespo comes out of the game and is replaced by Cruz. No Messi for us this game.

76:47 – Missed the substituition of another missing man. Schweinsteiger came off to be replaced by Borowski.

74:54 – Odonkor pulls a fast one. He swiffs wildly at a shot and then rolls all over the ground like someone kicked him. It’s an act of Italian proportions. Ref in danger of losing control of this one.

74:16 – Maxi lays all over the ground grabbing the other leg than the one that got kicked (barely).

72:15 – A bad square ball from Lahm puts Germany under pressure and Crespo looks to pounce. Instead it falls to Tevez who draws a beats a few players before laying off to Maxi who blasts into the side netting.

71:28 – Someone found Riquelme long enough to substitute him for Cambiasso. Argentina looking for a more defensive line-up.

69:32 – Abbondanzieri is in a bad way. It does not look like he can continue in this game. Leo Franco will take his place between the sticks. A blow for Argentina to burn a sub on a keeper. They’ve wasted some time here which Ballack is furious about.

68:09 – Ballack is felled after a soft foul by Maxi. Nothing there. The German free kick will be swept in by Schweinsteiger.

66:43 – Germany racking up the corners now, but Argentina looking capable from dead ball situations. They’ve barely made it out of their own half for the last 10 minutes though, which is exhausting the longer it goes on.

65:22 – Beckenbauer sighting! Germany leading on that score, but not where it really counts. Odonkor has one move, the kick by and chase. It has not worked once yet and Sorin is wise to it and just sticks his leg down the line every time.

63:54 – Another corner to Germany. The ball falls to Ballack who blasts his shot into the ground and off Ayala. El Pato jumps with Klose to get the rebound and takes a nasty knock. Both players get up gingerly, but El Pato the worse for wear.

62:04 – Corner to Germany. Schweinsteiger takes, but easily cleared by Argentina. Replay shows Ayala was wrestling with Ballack in the penalty area and looked to bring him down. Could have been a penalty?

61:13 – Signs that we will see Odonkor before too long like I thought at half time. In fact, Schneider comes off now.

59:19 – Mascherano gets a booking for sliding alongside Schneider at the edge of the area. It looked like a decent tackle to me. Podolski hammers the cross across the face of goal but it goes straight out. Why? Why can’t Schweinsteiger take those?

57:56 – No sightings of either Maradona or Beckenbauer so far in this game. I think that’s what’s been missing from this game so far. Of course, the goal has helped me forget that.

56:43 – Wondering what Klinsmann’s blood pressure is like right now. He’s looked so relaxed all tournament, but he’s gotta be feeling the heat now.

55:20 – More end-to-end stuff in this game now. Germany looking to equalize but Argentina enjoying the extra room in midfield too.

54:00 – Argentina counter attacks after the German free kick is cleared. Nice passing from Tevez to Riquelme to Maxi, but the eventual shot that comes in probably had one to many passes before it and is blocked by a retreating German defense.

53:07 – Heize runs through the back of Poldolski. No card but a free kick for Germany.

52:01 – Best thing that could have happened to this game. An early goal and now Germany has to come out and attack Argentina. They will lay siege to the Argentine goal but watch out for speedy counter attacks through Tevez.

49:55 – Riquelme still not doing much but he can turn a game with one kick of the boot. Fantastic header by Ayala. The only place he could score with the header is exactly where he put it. Germany trailing in a game for the first time in this World Cup.

48:26 – GGGGGOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLLLL!!!!!! Ayala beats Klose to a Riquelme header and places his header in exactly the right spot, beating Lahm on the line and Lehmann diving in vain.

46:58 – Tevez skies a shot over the bar and into Row Q after he turns on a throw-in. Sorin must be gutted right now, if he’s even thinking about the booking/suspension.

45:38 – Sorin draws a booking for a nothing foul. He will miss the next game if Argentina makes it through. Friedrich did well to earn a free kick on that let along a booking.

45:01 – Second half underway. Let’s see some attacking football, lads!

Half-time Highlights: Argentina had the majority of possession, but it was mostly in areas of the pitch that Germany was happy to let them have it in. Both teams have had a solitary shot on target, Argentina has 2 corners to Germany’s none. I would shade Germany looking the more dangerous side, but there really isn’t much between them.

What is the answer? Changes from the bench I think would help get some spark going. I’d like to see Messi early and get him running at the German defense. Maybe Odonkor could provide the same spark for Germany in place of Schweinsteiger who has been absent. I don’t like Odonkor’s touch on the ball, but he looks speedy and may give Germany more width that we’ve seen. Podolski has been little more than a placeholder today so perhaps we could see Neuville taking his place in the second half.

Half-time: As often happens when games are built up to epic proportions, this first half was somewhat disappointing to a neutral observer. Both teams spent the entire half feeling each other out and didn’t seem to come up with any answers. Let’s hope the coaches spotted some holes and will pass these secrets onto the players while they much down on their oranges.

44:50 – Podolski earns a free kick by the corner flag with a specatular fall to the ground. I’m sure there was contact but not that much. Last chance of the half for Germany. Nothing comes of it and the ref blows for half time.

42:35 – No communication between Klose and Podolski today. Seems like their telepathic play against Sweden was a one-off. This game is just dying for a player to take it by the scruff of the neck and start dictating procedings. Ballack has looked good in flashes, but then drifts out. Argentina has had no one step up for them yet – though Tevez is running hard.

41:20 – Riquelme has all but disappeared from the field of play. At this stage he is hurting Argentina more than he is helping.

40:04 – Tevez is terrorizing the much taller Friedrich with his speed on the ball. If those guys go one-on-one, Germany are in trouble.

38:55 – Scramble in the German box. Argentine player surrounded and boots flying everywhere. nice to see no dive action happening. No shot results and eventually Germany clears.

37:53 – Scrappy play by both sides for the last couple of minutes. The crowd is looking for something to cheer about but neither team providing it.

35:01 – Crespo falls over Metzelder’s leg. It was a foul but Crespo made sure the ref saw all of it. The free kick is played to the back post. A wrestling match breaks out with Ayala throwing his German defender to the ground – then just falling over himself in case the ref saw him do it.

33:39 – Klose steps on Sorin and gives away a free kick out wide. Germany half clears and battles for possession near the far corner flag.

32:39 – Argentina pressing. A nice ball into the German area forces Lahm to make a choice. He clears rather than wait for Lehmann to come for it.

30:15 – Schweinsteiger has looked a shadow of the player that lit up against Costa Rica. He’s barely been seen in this game. Riquelme is falling into the same camp today.

28:45 – Friedrich bursts up the sideline with Tevez on his heels. Friedrich looks to be running out of steam on his adventure and Tevez obliges with a foul.

27:28 – Podolski fouls again on Maxi Rodriguez, tackling back. He’ll have to be careful since he already has a card.

26:02 – Crespo called for handball in the German penalty area. Might have been dangerous otherwise but replay shows he definitely used his arm.

24:44 – Germany starting to press now. Nice interplay between Ballack, Lahm and Schweinsteiger. The move goes nowhere after Lahm’s cross is way ton deep but ominous signs for Argentina if they can’t stop the service down their right side.

23:07 – Riquelme goes down in the box under challenge from Ballack. Looked like nothing and the ref agreed, motioning to Riquelme to get up and play on.

21:53 – Possession being swapped back and forth in midfield. Before moves can become dangerous a bad touch or errant pass breaks the play down. A game of inches.

20:00 – Germany has had the better of the forst 20 minutes. They’ve looked more settled and passed the ball about better in areas that matter. Argentina has looked a little nervous but have not looked like they would concede either.

18:29 – Nice break by Argentina. Heinz lays a long ball to Tevez on the left who controls beautifully to beat Schneider. His pass through the legs of Friedrich finds Sorin who plays it into the 6 yard box with his first touch. Mertesacker is there to block the cross for a corner.

17:08 – German free kick in midfield. Schweinsteiger lays it into the area and it’s half cleared by Argentina. Mertesacker has a crack off balance but it skies over the bar from 18 yards.

15:40 – Gonzalez hits the deck on the edge of the area. Ref waves play on. Germany counters quickly and a Schnieder pass finds Balalcks head in the 18 yard box. The header is well struck but goes just wide of the post. First legitimate chance of the game.

14:29 – Tevez being tightly watched by Friedrich. Riquelme has had plenty of touches but hasn’t looked dangerous yet. He looked a bit dazed in the tunnel. I hope his head is in the game.

12:47 – Pekerman on the bench is wearing a suit and white socks. Let’s hope that’s a superstition and not a fashion choice.

11:40 – Argentina drawing jeers from the corwd for keeping possession but not going anywhere with it. This is where they can launch froward in the blink of an eye. Not this time though. Germany wins it back with cheers from the home support.

09:25 – An Argentina free kick is earned when Friedrich tugs Tevez’s shirt. The ref has words but no cards. Riquelme’s bending service is taken by Lehmann but not before we see Crespo’s arm fly upwards towards the ball. Don’t want to see any more of that.

08:11 – Argentina had a corner and the normally excellent service from Riquelme was poor to the near post. Germany clears.

07:03 – El Pato spills the weak free kick but recovers before there is any danger. Podolski tried to bend it but didn’t get all of it.

05:54 – Germany with some consistent possession and looking good with it. Schweinsteiger looks slow, but Klose’s touch is good as always. Klose gets a free kick about 40 yards out after he’s jacked in the back.

04:25 – Argentina attacking dow the left with Tevez and Sorin. Germany defends calmly. Tall timber against small willows down there.

02:45 – Yellow card for Podolski who was tackling back. The Argentina player was barely touched but leapt into the air like he stepped on a land mine.

01:01 – Free kick for Argentina in midfield. They’re setting up in the box, but the players are engaging in a little ‘Argey-bargy’ in the area. Ref trying to stamp his authority on procedings.

00:30 – First flop of the game as Mascherano hits the deck like a sack of spuds.

00:01 – Let the war…er… game begin! We’ve been waiting for a match-up like this all tournament, especially after the Netherlands-Argentina game became less important. Germany looking sharp, but someone really should ask them to tuck their shirts in. I thought that was a FIFA directive from years back.

National Anthems: Those kids out there with the players must be so stoked to be there. What a moment. Ballack reading a speech of some kind. What is up with that? Shouldn’t they be concentrating on the game at hand? Sorin’s turn now. Sorin has the better stadium voice (and hair). Sign him up for American Idol.

5 minutes to go: Players in the tunnel. Germany in white, Argentina not able to wear their stripes today. They’ll take the field in solid blue. Will this effect the game? They beat Germany in 1986 wearing the stripes, while they lost in 1990 in a dire final wearing the blue they wear today.

10 minutes to go: As if the build-up to the game wasn’t enough, there’s the added joy of competing sightings in the crowd of Beckenbauer and Maradona. There could not be two more contrasting representations of the game we all love. The stoic and composed Kaiser – World Cup winner as player and coach, and the unbridaled emotion of the Little Magician – villain and deity of the World Cup and his life off the pitch a soap opera of Dallas proportions. I can’t wait to gauge the emotions of the match in these two faces.

15 minutes to go: German coverage is showing an interview with Tevez. That dude is one ugly cat. Can play though.

20 minutes to go: Perfect weather for liveblogging today. Slightly overcast, cool and no humidity. Let’s hope the teams play as good as I feel right now in the hot seat.

25 minutes to go: No change in the German line-up from the one that took care of business against a tentative Sweden. So I’m going to have to struggle with the likes of Schweinsteiger, Mertesacker, and Metzelder on the LiveBlog. Bloody Germans.

30 minutes to go: Word from the Argentinian camp is that Saviola is on the bench for Tevez to make his first start. I’ve enjoyed Saviola’s play and it’s a shame to see him relegated to the bench. Cambiasso once again finds himself sitting out, replaced by Luis Gonzales. This must be a tactical move as Cambiasso has redeemed himself after his slow start against Cote d’Ivoire.

One hour to go: There’s plenty of talk over on the Argentina team blog, looking at the history of these teams meeting and results that could/should have been but weren’t. It makes for some interesting reading and the belief that destiny is on their side this time.

Certainly Argentina will be up against it. German confidence is sky high right now. The fans are ready to support their team (horns and whistles have been blowing outside WCB HQ for several hours already). It is likely that some decisions will go Germany’s way, no matter how impartial the ref will try to be.

Whatever happens, I hope that the game itself is decided on the field, by the players, and not hinge on one decision made by the man in black.

Pre-game: What a match! Who do you think will win?
All sorts of history associated with this game. The two teams have met in two World Cup finals in recent memory – 1986 & 1990 – with honours shared. The game that could have been the final considering that both these teams are in excellent form at the moment.

It’s a tough call to pick a winner here. Germany has been building steadily with a stream of impressive performances and has the support of the crowd in a massive stadium. Argentina has an awesome array of offensive weapons, both on the field and on the bench should they be required. They’ve buried teams who let them play, and found a way to win against a Mexico team that took the game to them.

My predition is 3-2 to the home side after extra time. What’s yours?

Germany entered the world cup with negatives reviews tailing behind them. I think that Argentina is the stronger overall team, but Germany has the home advantage, three terrific but easy wins and a good win over Sweden. (which i think are the better team, but went into the game scared and with a loosing mentality)I think that if Argentina enters the game calm and confident that they can have victory over a very nail biting, close, and terrific game.

Argentina has was it takes to win this game as long as they forget about the fact that Germany is the home team. Germany has had an easy way into the quarter finals and their confident is stronger than their game!!!

  • Elie

    Germany will win this Game
and Lukas Podolski will score a Hat-Trick and the final score will be Germany 3-0 Argentina, in the semi-final they will beat Italy, and in the final they will beat England.

Germany vs. Argentina will be the game of the games.
After 4 furios wins, the german folks wanna see a great victory against Argentina…
I mean, if the german team shoot the first goal, argentina will cry…

  • Oleg

Argentina will have an easy win. Germany should start crying already.

  • Oleg

One more thing, the germans miroslov klose and his bend over buddy podulski the polish sell outs will be very dissapointed after the game. Viva argentina

  • Kyle

I think if Messi starts and gets a spark going for Argentina and they get off to a good start they can easily win. I think if Germany scores the first goal it will be very hard to come back. Argentina is the better team overall, it just depends on their attitude going into the game. If they have a losing attitude or they are too cocky they will be defeated.

Start Crespo and Messi, bring in Tevez and Saviola at forward, and sub in Aimar later in the game to clamp the victory down.

    Viva Argentina!

  • Stalin Balboa

Germany is now with overconfidence, so surely they will loose. Since from the beginning of the match Argentina meets all big team. So in this quarterfinal with confidently Argentina will win this match against Germany and all Germany people will cry………

Argentina wins the game 2-1, when Messi and Tevez come in, Argentina’s wave of attack will pump the german’s defense and goals will be awarded to Argentina. Good Luck, Albicelestes! Ole ole ole….

  • reja

If Argentina wins they may win by two goals. The referee will favor Germany after two goals, not after first goal by Argentina.

So, Argentina will win. Germany’s overconfidence of scoring may sink them.

Argentina should Play Crespo from first to last. Messi should make to play after 25 minutes and Tabez should play as substitutes of Sabaiola. The couch should not play saviola more than half an hour.

  • black

I am hoping to enjoy a good game. And Germans will lose by 2 gaols to 1.

  • Zoe

Argentina played really hard in this game and lacked a slight bit of luck to win the game! If they had two goals during the game, they wouldnt have faced the penalty with such low confident :( And Germany as the host country, and its luck, well, there it was, they won… and what’s wrong with Argentina’s coach???

  • renie

germany will win hands down.it will be a piece of cake against argentina.germany will win 2 goals to nil.its going to be a great match.bad luck argentina…

Should be a great game between two entertaining and young teams. Much as I would love to be wrong, I think Argentina is just a bit too much for Germany to handle and will take the game 2-1.

  • dietmar

    Salam ya all!

I hope you have fun watching this game. I wont be around, I’m gonna be off to watch this match on the big screen myself. Hehe..

Chris, I wish you luck sir!! Let this game be one of the best you ever blogged. (too much?)

And well, like I always say.. GO ARGENTINA!! Kick some ass!

If however, we have some match-fixing in this game – I will probably end up crying all night! :(

Germany, give Argentina a good fight and make their victory worth it! Make them the champions because they fought one of the tougher teams!!

    SO let’s play ball…

    See ya all!

  • Philip

Both teams will come out tentative because of the build-up to this game. I expect a 1-1 draw at the end of regulation and Argentina will win in PK’s.

  • Howie

Very tough match for both teams- Argentina amore talented group going against a solid team but at home. Histroy repeats, and Argentina win in penalty kicks as both try to be safe and not make any mistakes. Looking for the opportunity to not go down 1-0 early in game, Argentina brings in Messi and Alemania push back to defend Argentinas attch.

  • dietmar

    one word-KLOSE!

This should be a semifinal at least. :/

    Oh well, whoever wins, wins.

  • tulsabob

Germany will win. They are at home and on form. Argentina are in brilliant form but that doesn’t matter when Germany will have their fans and the referee behind them. You would have to be crazy to bet against Germany.

I like how some people think that overconfidence will be Deutschland’s downfall. This game is all about confidence! Argentina’s going to play hard, and they’re going to score, but the Germans won’t be shaken. Germany 2 – 1 Argentina in regulation. Confidence, confidence, confidence.

… And acting, occassionally, but both these teams have been playing fairly clean, so I expect this to be a good match.

  • dila

    sadly,i CANNOT watch the ,match
    =(

  • Andreia & Alex

Morning all (well morning here in my part of the world) Can’t wait for the start

  • Deviilz.

BlahM..got the word out of my mouth.Words are 100% supported.
Anyways..,words fr my bookies that it’s the Germans are going thru..,(FIFA wants it,homeground adv, etc.)that’s loads of bull-shxxx right..?

  • tulsabob

Morning yankees. Whereabouts in the U.S are you from?

  • ETucker

    I am so nervous…..

I bet on Germany. Both teams are in form, but Ballack is the best all around midfielder in the game, Lehman is beter than el Pato, and Germany is playing at home.

    But its 50/50

  • http://www.3kilos.com James

Argentina will win, first decent side ze germans have had to face. will show them up!

  • Deviilz.

My money will be with the Argentinians…,win/lose part of the game anyway.
    Easier said than done though…hmmm..

  • Los Angelina

    tulsabob… California (originally from Germany)

  • Ruth Hasler

Anyone know where I can watch it for free on my PC at work without some foreign commentary?

  • tulsabob

I would also like to know about a site where i can watch the match.I’m at work too

  • Denni

Argentinia are capable of magic and Germany are soaring on a roar of crowd approval.

    Anything is possible.

This will be a nail-biter! (And I’m not even supporting either side).

  • Tom

Germany’s defense has been suspect and if Argentina can grab an early goal they’ll pull out a close one. However, if Argentina isn’t in top shape this game, Germany will exploit that big time. Germany doesn’t seem like a team you can come back on…not on their home court.

  • http://kaal.lostmysmile.org/ Kaal

    GOO ARGENTINA!!! GOO MESSI!!!

  • Moe

What did Ballack read out loud?

  • Roland

I have no dog in this fight, but I do think Argentina will win 3 – 2. I think this will be a great match. Let’s hope it’s a clean one too.

I have mixed feelings about this game. For one thing I want Argentina to lose so I can point and laugh now, but I also want Argentina to get to the finals because an Argentina vs Brasil final would be totally a dream. Plus, I could point and laugh more veemently when Brazil wins.

So I don’t know who I want to win :(

  • matthew

Germany should win as long as Argentina doesn’t get away with tons of diving.

  • amin

Is there a site where we can watch the game on line?

  • http://www.fussballwmblog.de/ Eric

    Germany / Argentina 7:8 (prediction)

    3:2 (hope)

  • ETucker

This game is going to be smashing! I can hardly stand it!

  • Moe

According to the commentator here, the two speeches are about anti racism.

FIFA said that starting this game, both captains have to give such speeches.

Moe: it was some kind of anti-racism statement. Something to the lines of “I reject all kinds of racism”.

  • ETucker

    Divers! Levantate flaco!

  • Andreia & Alex

anyone know what was said in the speech beforehand

  • pawan

    germeny will win this match

  • Sam

Though I don’t have high emotions in this game, I’m hoping for a tight Argentinian win, maybe 2-1.

It’s time to start remembering that Brazil isn’t the only South American team worth talking about.

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

    German gore vs Argentinian artistry

  • MilesDavis

Great Work Guys. I have followed every Blog and this is clearly going to be the 2 best teams in the cup. Germany will put up with no diving they play a mans games unlike the diving latins.

  • http://www.fussballwmblog.de/ Eric

    @Moe and Zé:

    http://www.fussballwmblog.de/soccer-world-cup-fifa-days-against-racism-give-strong-and-positive-political-leadership/

FIFA launched a series of high profile anti-racism activities at each quarter-final of the World Cup. The initiatives include declarations by team captains to combat racism and a call on broader society to support this aim.

  • Andreia & Alex

    Eric thanks for the information

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

    Yellow already !!

  • Jonathan

germany already fouling this will go on all day

  • Sam

Was it really a dive? I’m going to have to rely soely on the blogger until I get to see the replays online.

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

Germany has the first shot at the goal, but straight to GK

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

And the first corner goes to Argentina

  • Andreia & Alex

I was hoping for a drama free match. I will admit some of these falls look pretty suspect to me. They’re great athletes I hope they will just rely on skill

    Eric: good to know, thanks.

  • ETucker

and the GK still messes up. I love El Pato, but he did the same thing against England….his rebound control can be lacking at times!

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

    Pretty even after 10 minutes

  • Trapper

Both sides seem to have done their homework on how to stop the other. Let’s hope it’s a moment of brilliance that settles it.

Ballack almost opens the scoring with a header after not being picked up by the Argentine defense.

  • Tom

Argentina’s ball control is very good. They are fast and Argentina has come out pretty sharp. I think they have a shot at this one.

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

the crowd’s vocal reaction is telling which side has the ball

  • ETucker

The longer it stays 0-0, the more it favors the homeside…

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

    Ballack heads it out

  • Tom

I agree, ETucker. Even though I think Argentina has played slightly better so far.

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

    another corner for Argentina

  • Sam

Looks like Germany’s had more shots, though.

  • sooz

if FIFA truly and legally stands behind their anti-racism initiatives, policies, and laws, then Aragones and Blokhin would not have been permitted to physically attend any of these matches. they would be put in the same pool as the spectators who, because of racist behavior, etc, were denied tickets and entry to the games.

as for this game: bring on the pink cards!!!!

  • ETucker

What a great game! I love both side’s offensive inclinations!

  • ETucker

I think the first goal will be an advantage, but the last two games have been 2:2 draws.

I hope to see plenty of goals….

  • Paddy

you are watching the world cup final here – Germany vs Argentina. Too bad these two had to faceoff before the final game.

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

such a vastly contrasting style ! Argentina is taking their own sweet time to build up their move, whereas Germaany is relying on blitzkeig.

  • Liliana

Even though I always pull for teams from the Americas, I’m totally behind Germany today.
    Vamos, vamos Alemania!

  • Tom

I know it’s not the statement of the year, but whoever scores first here will win for sure.

  • Tom

I’m pulling for the Argentines. Viva!

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

Podolski gets away with a cardless caution

  • Tom

I think a lot of the “diving” in this match might not be diving but just a huge difference in player size.

  • ETucker

Both forwards are tackling back. Impressive. Team offense and team defense I suppose…

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

still even after 30 minutes. Both GK’s not yet tested.

  • ETucker

Riquelme really needs to show up if Argentina wants to win…

  • Sam

The FIFA stats say that Argentina has had possession 67% of the time, but the BBC stats show them with possession 46% of the time. That’s a pretty big descrepancy.

  • marco

argentina is playing better, but………. THEY are definitely diving! Look at what’s happened with podolski in the last minutes. I’m afraid of them (semifinals)

  • http://beingruthiesmom.blogspot.com Trish

    Eric~

Thanks for posting the link re: the anti racism stance. Interesting, esp. if it is more than just lip service.

  • MilesDavis

Fantastically refereed game thus far. Where was this guy for the Ausies?

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

    Goals will be scarce

  • http://beingruthiesmom.blogspot.com Trish

Damned refreshing when the ref is neither visually impaired nor clearly aligned with one team or the other. The penalty for Italy-AUS was ridiculous….

  • marco

miles davis, where was this referee when Materazzi was chased out?

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

BBC stats looks more credible to me

  • ETucker

I can’t stand the diving. If Argentina plays Italy, I predict 22 red cards and 7 penalties

    MINIMUM

  • http://www.worldcupcorner.com Miha

It looks like there will be no goals in the first half… go Argentina, go, go, go, … Argentina!

  • marco

ETucker, tell me an instance of diving Italian players. Except Grosso, of course, YOU CAN’T slide in the box!!! If you do it, you’re stupid. Just TELL me: What if the defender was the goalkeeper?

  • ETucker

Guys, I just posted an ad on the back of millions of milk cartons looking for Juan Roman Riquelme. Has anyone seen him?

Of course, if Tevez keeps playing like he has, he could be compensate for Roman’s disappearing act.

  • Sam

MilesDavis, if I remember right, everyone on this board was complementing the ref in the ITA-AUS game for being such a good ref and not throwing out card… right up until the last minute.

It’s amazing how one call will make people suddenly think a ref is as blind as a bat, stupid, and paid off…

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

First half summary – Germany tried to bully, but Argentina not intimidated.

  • James

Argentina should bring in Messi. Give him an entire half to work his magic. And all the fans should check under their seats to see if we can’t find Riquelme.

  • Tom

    Sam,

Not true. That red card that the ref gave Italy at the beginning of the second half drew a lot of cat calls…I know I did.

Yeah, the guy who did the Italy vs Australia game will be the referee for Brazil vs France. :( Oh boy…

  • Sam

Tom: Agree, that call being the only other one that people didn’t like.

  • dietmar

he should ref the final!who’d of guessed the way that match started.

  • Sam

Yeah, I think that Argentina need to be making more of their explosive runs into offence.

  • Trapper

I would have liked to see Argentina play with a little less fear in that half.

Even as the “away” side, I feel they would be better off opening the game up a bit.

  • ETucker

    Sam:

a bad penalty call is ten time worse than handing out a few too many yellows.

It’s like getting a ton of speeding tickets vs. one act of treasong.

incomparable. Of course, if you read the ref’s report he says he was tired and exhausted….perhaps two refs are in order?

  • dietmar

them argies are out of gas!

  • dietmar

germany is dispossessing argentina very nicely in the danger zone.

  • Tom

I wonder which will win out in the second half: Argentina’s speed or Germany’s aggressive style of attacking. I think Germany might get a bit tired and Argentina’s substitutions will outperform those of Germany.

  • Jonathan

Not overly impressed with either side yet. Argentina holding the ball but not really threatening and germany counterattacking. I want to see if the subs in the second half will change the game. Wating for messi to enter. A first goal from either team will really open up this game.

  • Sam

ETucker: Where did you read the ref’s report?

  • Tom

Trapper, I think Argentina did exactly what it needed to do. Germany has feasted on opponents by scoring early with the 12th man supporting them. Argentina didn’t allow a goal (or many chances) and they’ll come out firing in the second half, I think.

  • http://www.worldcupzone.blogspot.com Ade Lamidi

I expected a lot more from both teams. Lets hope the second half lives up to expectatio.

  • dietmar

germany needs to quit hangin on to the ball that long…1-2,1-2…etc

  • Philip

this has all the signs of a game destined to be settled by penalty kicks. In that case…..advantage Argentina

  • dietmar

    and dont forget to shoot..lol

  • Sam

Philip: you think so? I thought people were saying the Argentine GK wasn’t so hot?

  • Liliana

I don’t know about you all but I’ve been distracted by that weird “Goleo” thing dancing around. I can’t believe someone actually got paid to design such a lame mascot.

  • John

Argentina needs to go all without any fear. they are very cautios now ,because of the Ref situation..but I think they need to attack more and JUST GO FOR IT!!!!

  • Ubi

    Im A HOOLIGAN!

  • dietmar

    2nd half.

  • matt

argentina are to slow and all this possesion will eventually go to waste

  • laprimavera

I didn’t see Argentina’s speed nor Germany’s attacks. The game is rather slow and sloppy, especially Germany’s offense fast asleep in front. Maybe deliberately asleep, per some kind of strategy? Well it didn’t work. Wake up and play ball!!

  • MilesDavis

How anyone can think German has owned posssion is amazing to me. Though I think the Ballack header has been the best chance so far. I hope this game never ends.
The Italy v Ukraine game with have a very tough act to follow.

Anyone know where I can some of the magic spray?

  • jmh

The battle is being fought in the midfield. The Args are dominating, clearly.
Yet i think the Germans are going to make a few adjustments… a nailbiter. I can hardly watch this.

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

    wow ! argentina !!!

  • Sam

    GOAL! Yay!

  • hoa

    Nice effort from AYALA there

  • http://beingruthiesmom.blogspot.com Trish

    GOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLL!

  • Moe

    GOAL!!! Argentina

  • http://sports.godblessthefreaks.org Philip

What a pathetic dive by the German. If ever a dive deserved a red, not a yellow, it was that one.

In fact, I think i’m happy ARG just scored…. and I’m never happy when ARG scores.

  • oyo

    GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

Lovely corner kick, efficiently headed in. Hope this silences the jeers!

  • oyo

    you just gotta luv this……….

  • matt

first chance of the game and a goal

  • Tom

    Woooooooooooooooooooooo

  • Leo

    Ole! Vamos Argentina!

    Oh Lahm… where are you.

  • MilesDavis

How can Argentina win one in the Air against a bigger German Team? Sweet goal and vertical body placement. 1st Time Germans Behind in tourney. I feel for the goosesteppers.

  • ETucker

Ayala is very dangerous on setpieces. Well done.

  • Sam

MilesDavis, can we not inject racist comments into this discussion?

  • http://deleted ks

i am so happy for argentina.
esp. after that pathetic german dive. they need to start playing.

  • GT

Three men in the goal and not one capable of stopping the ball?
Somebody must has have had his eyes closed!

  • http://sports.godblessthefreaks.org Philip

41 more minutes and Klinsi can get to thinking about his new job. :-)

  • Cancer

    And it is

    Argentina 1 – 0 Germany

  • Razzle

This game has really opened up after that goal.

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

what a fine move that by Argentina…should have culminated in a goal

  • Stuart

I knew it…the minute I get called away on a problem somone scores. I was back just a moment too late to catch the delayed pirate video feed. :(

  • ETucker

We’ll see if Argentina sits back….like againt Brazil in the Copa America final of 2004..

I hope not for their sake!

  • Nate

Me or has this game been one of the most boring? I was all hyped up for this one, but it looks like both teams are weary of the other one.

  • ETucker

Tom: that doesn’t stop them :) Copa America final of 2004 vs Brazil, anyone?

  • Tom

ETucker, they can’t afford to sit back. They aren’t Italy.

  • oyo

@ks I feel your joy. GER was clearly a favorite for this game and don’t tell me home field doesn’t mean anything..

  • Sam

They can’t afford to sit cak: Germany is going to be coming in strong.

  • Liliana

It looks bad for Germany, doesn’t it? *sniff*

  • laprimavera

The rumor I heard is that Klinsmann’s new coaching job may be with the US national team.. That’s dismal, looking at this particular game..

  • http://www.fussballwmblog.de/ Eric

    oh no! 0:1!
    The decision against Germany. :(

  • Cancer

Waiting for the one who is going to meet Italy in Semi finals

  • Tom

True ETucker. Argentina isn’t that strong defensively. I’m not saying they are weak but they don’t have Italy’s castle-like defense.

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

that was an unjustified yellow…Mr. Ref !!

  • MilesDavis

Is it just me or did the pace pick up by 10 fold ?

Watch out for the Argentine Counter. Still much time so the Argentine diving team will not start until the 70th minute if they are still up.

  • GT

I need some cards to be dished out. My days quota has not been filled….

Opps there goes a yellow. Getting close -_-

  • http://deleted ks

what was that? was that a yellow card?

  • marco

    schneider and Co…pathethic

  • GT

I bet you he hit a bird with that lousy corner…

  • http://deleted ks

i don’t know about the argentine diving team. i think the germans should get the divers of the match award so far.

  • Tom

Yeah, the Germans have been acting and diving with the best of them. It’s a part of the game, folks…

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan
  • oyo

crappy yellow card…but the GER’s still wasted a great opp.

  • marco

Pretty sure they’re going to remain in ten on the left wing after this substitution.

  • matthew

they didn’t call ballack getting pulled down by the shirt on that corner kinck!?!!?! BS

  • Sam

I don’t see why Klinsmann would be looking for a new job if they lose. They’ve come far, and everyone knows this German team has been looking much better than expectations.

I guess a coach is always the easiest person to blame.

  • Sam

That’s lour first sub, huh? I would have thought more would be coming in to get the pace up a bit.

  • MilesDavis

Where has Klose been this whole match ? Germans need way better feeds if they hope to equal this match.

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

    mournful faces in the stands

  • MilesDavis

Klinsmann is gone if they lose because he has never won anything. Hopefully he will become the new US coach…….. Germans love winners, don’t we all.

  • GT

    Mohan

nice pic. It’s amazing how fast they get these images up.

  • laprimavera

Klinsmann lives in California. Shorter commute if he becomes US coach.

  • MilesDavis

    Let the time wasting begin.

Heh, remember FIFA wanted to forbid using images from the matches on the internet during the match and for a few hours afterit?

  • rew

    hopefully germany score now….

Argentina setting up the defensive wall.

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

oh! Abbondanzieri is hurt…hope Germany doesn’t sneak one in now

  • brian34

Why the hell would you want Klinsmann as the coach? You just said he has never won anything.

  • oyo

golly..now our keepers gone…this doesn’t bode well for ARG

  • marco

    Why the hell they’re whistling?

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

Ze …that photo is on FIFA’s site

Marco, it’s German supporters whistling. What would you expect? :)

  • ETucker

Was it a bad foul on Ballack by Ayala?

  • MilesDavis

I think his leg is broken

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

Argentina is looking better and better…both in attack and defence

  • http://deleted ks

i don’ think so that was a foul on ballack.

Mohan: I know, I know. I just remembered they wanted to use that rule (not allowing pictures on the internet during the game) but it was so badly received that they gave up.

  • Sam

brian34: It’s just TV commentator rumors. It’s only because he lives in California that anyone’s suggesting it.

  • oyo

Is it me or is this ref wearing the GER colors…what a crappy call

German need better free kickers… :/

  • laprimavera

Diving doesn’t need to be part of the game, and not all countries play as if it is. Unfortunately certain “marquee” teams are divers who are regularly rewarded by refs for their dives, and uninformed and unintelligent commentators (like those at ESPN) would tell you it’s part of the game. (Not the fine commentators that I watch on Univision, though. They know the game.)

  • http://sports.godblessthefreaks.org Philip

Upset of the year. I never thought I’d see any opponent, other than perhaps Italy, outdive Argentina — but it’s happening.

  • http://deleted ks

i mean i don’t think it was a foul, etucker.

  • brian34

Germany leads… in flops, 3 to 1. Ridiculous.

  • MilesDavis

Where are the great German feeds? Does Germany understand they are the best at set plays? And yet that is how Argentina scores ? I do not get it…. Oh well Ole Ole Ole Ole Ole

  • http://sports.godblessthefreaks.org Philip

    laprimavera,

It doesn’t have to be part of the game. But when referees let themselves be fooled by it, the risk/reward ratio turns clearly in favor of diving.

  • Liliana

    Germany looking worse…wha’ happened???

  • ETucker

ks- i think what happens on the box on corner kicks is more like the “law of the jungle” than open play….so if its nothing egregious i believe you :)

  • dan

    i hate odonokor…

  • Sam

The photo at the front of the FIFA page (http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com/06/en/index.html) of Ayala pointing at someone during the match is really cool.

  • matthew

    Dive Dive DIVE!!!

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

Argentina is clearly out-thinking Germany. They have a better tactical plan.

  • Razzle

Nyet nyet nyet nyet nyet. Damn. Goal by Germany. Sigh.

  • brian34

And that qualifies him to be a coach?

    NOW the game will start…

  • Sam

Oh my! Tight tight game! Now Germany has the moral boost

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

wow! 1-1…its gotta be exciting now 1

  • Liliana

    Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • MilesDavis

    wwwwwwwwwwwwwwoooooooooooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

  • http://deleted ks

allright germany! goooooaaal! happy for them too.

  • Trapper

    1-1!!!!

As a neutral this game needed that so much!

  • Tom

    Ugh. Into overtime we go.

  • James

    WOW! What a goal.

  • hoa

now the game will get exciting!!

  • rew

    what a beatiful goal !!!!!!!!!!!GOALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

  • Moe

    Finally.. nice goal by Klose

  • GT

Hmm the Germans com in strong!

“I can do it better than you”

  • marco

    YESSSS

  • Stuart

WOOHOO! GREAT header goal! NOW we have a game…the next few minutes of regulation should be INTENSE!

  • http://sports.godblessthefreaks.org Philip

    Nice goal by Italy Germany.

    ¡Al, e, ma-nia! ¡Al, e, ma-nia!

  • MilesDavis

He who wins possession wins the match. Argentine took out all offensive players. They are in deep doo doo

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

will Argentina miss Riquelme and Crespo now??? Too early substitutions?

  • http://deleted ks

why didn’t the argentines put in messi or saviola as subs?

  • http://dinorider.blogspot.com Dinorider

that was not a foul of Ballack!

    TOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRR

die deutsche haben ein TOR gemacht
    Goal!!!
One more argentian goal and that will be better!

  • Tom

Argentina is playing at a huge disadvantage now. They subbed in defensive players and now we’re probably headed to OT.

  • James

Did Tevez just act like he was going to choke Odonkor?

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

The jeering is back …for Argentina

  • Garin

As a result of the lack of Messi, I have switched over to rooting for Germany. Argentine coach = biggest idiot in the world. Does he think he WONT get crucified if they lose after he puts in “Cruz” instead of the most dangerous player in the world?

  • ETucker

Argentina has no midfield creative force….no Riquelme, no Aimar….

this is a big problem. Though Tevez is still amazing and Cruz is underrated.

  • Mortimer

    Bah, Messi is really overrated.

  • http://sports.godblessthefreaks.org Philip

Guess strikethrough doesn’t work on this stylesheet.

  • matt

argentina coach needs punching for his negativity

  • pawan

    man where is neuville

  • Sam

That was bad strategy, subbing in the defenders. A German goal was still a very distinct possibility, and instead of trying to prevent that possibility, Argentina should have been thinking about what they would do if they DID score.

  • oyo

GER clearly has the upside here. ARG is playing out of gas..

  • http://deleted ks

agree…..the argentines are in trouble. why is the ref calling all these fouls that are not fouls. just gave another one to cruz.

  • laprimavera

Why Klose out? What does the German commentator say?

  • MilesDavis

Still a very well refereed Game. I like the give a very early Yellow then let it sort itself out.

Argentina has a lot of Italian descendants as you can tell diving talents.

  • ETucker

Argentina always tries to win 1-0 in big games.

This is the exact same sitation as Copa America 2004.

Wake up! YOu are not Italy!

  • Liliana

offside or not, my heart just stopped!

  • ETucker

perhaps a little extra time right when I have my lunch break?

    YES!

  • brian34

You’ve got to be kidding me. The ref is destroying this match. I wonder who he wants to win. Ha ha.

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

Lots of drama in the closing minutes…TENSE!

  • GT

Damn! x2 Yellow card and missed goal. Somebody needs to talk to the ref. He is making some royal mistakes!

  • Tom

Yeah, this game has clearly tipped into the Germans’ favor. Germans will win in OT straight up. No PKs.

Pekerman is probably saving messing for extra time. Which can be quite good for Argentina.

  • MilesDavis

    Remember the Poland match!!!!!

  • marco

    maxi maxi tsk tsk

  • Tom

Magic in the last 4 minutes?

  • Sam

Heck, Germany might even put one away in injury time.

  • James

ze, argentina has used all their subs. what you see is what you get with argentina at this point. i think the germans have as well.

  • matthew

That was a very good Yellow Card. Ref is really comin’ correct in this match up to this point. If you think otherwise, you’re a fan of cheating. You dive that much, you’re bound to get caught!

  • ETucker

Ze- Pekerman has no more subs because of the Pato injury.

Cruz instead of Messi? And Cambiasso instead of Riqulme…I’m sre Inter fans are happy, but nobody else is.

  • http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/worldcupfan dw

I’ve never seen a guy get tripped, then get a yellow for faking it.

Who paid the ref? Blatter? Beckenbauer? Juventus?

“saving messing” = “saving Messi”. Oops.

  • marco

please MILES DAVIS tell me an instance of Italian DIVE in this CHAMPIONSHIP!
You can’t always say that without blame and shame.

  • pawan

what the ballack is doing in the middle. he lost his composor

James: oops, thanks. I hadn’t followed all subs. Pretty bad for them then. A rested Messi would be quite good for them.

  • matthew

See? When either team plays dirty, they’re getting carded. Ref is FAIR!

  • MilesDavis

    Odonkor is a gangster

  • Liliana

Oh crap, now I’m gonna be REALLY late for work. Can’t we all just get a month off to watch the games?

  • Sam

Marco — forget it. Once people immagine all Italians to be divers, their never going to stop thinking about it, and never going to admit their mistake. Who cares?

  • matt

    argentina so frustrate me

if they had gone for it they would have won by 3 or 4

  • brian34

Oh my God, Odonkor should have goteen a red card for that. what a joke.

  • MilesDavis

I need a drink. Time for more Whine.. I mean wine

  • Tom

Marco, Italy is my favorite team but they do dive a lot.

  • dietmar

everyone breath in; everyone breath out…wow

  • MilesDavis

Hopefully some gets DAS BOT on DAS BALL

  • http://kaal.lostmysmile.org/ Kaal

is it me or was that yellow card to Maxi UNFAIR!!!??!

  • matthew

I count 6 dives Argentina to 2 dives Germany.

  • oyo

ok fellas whats it going to be?? We sure have got our $’s worth on this one..Predictions pls…

  • ETucker

    Kaal-

diving in the box is a seriou offense. This card will make sure no players try to pull funny business later on.

  • pawan

well last 20 minutes was full of excitement.

  • matthew

Marco- Many of my friends in Brooklyn are Italian and they all love Italy but all admit that Italy loves to dive. They always admit it with a smile or chuckle as well!

  • Sam

Germany have the strong advantage going into OT

  • hoa

I think it will be hard for Argentina to win in the overtime. Their key players were not playing well and were subed.

Argentina seems running out of gas while Ger has some fresh legs and still look strong. And they have the crowd behind them.

  • Max

    German Futbol Sucks.
Who can believe they only can play if they payed ther eferee …

  • Zidane

    2-1 Germany, Brazil-Germany final, long ago predicted…

  • http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/worldcupfan dw

    BONUS ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL!

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

Franco might be the key to this game now.

  • http://kaal.lostmysmile.org/ Kaal

oh you really think Beckenbauer would let germany lose on their own soil? i think not.

lets just HOPE its gonna be “fair” play in extra time

  • Tom

I can’t imagine Argentina winning this game.

  • matthew

Since when is a card for diving in the box unfair? It’s a major and completely card-worthy foul.

  • matthew

Diving in the box is how ITA beat AUS, lest we forget.

  • MilesDavis

Germans owning posssion now. I feel bad for Argentina bad luck about the goalie.

Still wondering about the Klose sub. He was hiding until the goal then he was all over the place.

  • pf

Second Time Argentina goes to overtime! Let’s see if they score a fabulous goal like last time.

  • oyo

espn commentary sucks..I’ve resorted to univison. Damn,,I wish I spoke spanish..

  • Denni

I wish they’d stop the whistling–it’s not sporting.

But I find I’m rooting for Germany. After all, they’re the hosts. The atmosphere is always better when the host nation gets through.

  • http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/worldcupfan dw

So, is the Argentine problem that they played 120 minutes last weekend, or that they burned all their subs?

Just me, but I would allow a fourth sub in extra time. Having fresh legs might mean fewer shootouts.

  • MilesDavis

Hopefully no one for Argetina gets hurt. Is it me or did we revert back to the 1st half.

  • Amma

come on Germany — send the Argentines back to South America!

  • http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/worldcupfan dw

    Ow. Knee to forehead. Ow.

  • Tom

I’ve got ESPN running muted with univision in the background. It’s not quite synched. :(

  • Eric

If it comes to PKs, the fact that Arg is missing their 1st string keeper could be really big.

Oh no, whistling is VERY MUCH a part of the game! Seriously! Without it football whould be just other boring sport.

  • MilesDavis

Inivision is about 3 seconds ahead. Love the Univision annoucers really know their Futbol unlike ESPN.

  • Stuart

Funny listening to the Sun guys praise Odonkor and read your ragging on him…multiple personalities can’t be good in a footballer.

  • Tom

Eric, it shouldn’t get to that point.

  • hoa

I think the game will go to PK.

  • http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/worldcupfan dw

Odd. Univision and ESPN are within a second of each other here. Guess it’s a satellite thing.

  • hoa

Ballak should get a yellow there. I guess this is called home field advantage.

  • Tom

For me it’s like 15 seconds.

Haha, I love on replays how when a player is struck ANYWHERE he just covers his face as if he had taken a punch in the nose.

  • MilesDavis

German Dive. Where’s the card. Ballack must be from very south Germany.

  • http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/worldcupfan dw

Either Ayala got away with one, or Ballack really needs to work on his acting.

  • Tom

    This could get ugly.

  • Mike

Referee is sh**. Most free kicks to the Germans. Really ufair. No more this referee for the next game.

  • hoa

A tip to the Fifa refs: divers always cover their faces when they are on the ground.

  • MilesDavis

At least Argentina has a fresh goalie.

  • http://www.worldcupblog.org/world-cup-2006/liveblog-argentina-vs-germany.html abraham

Argentina man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They beat mexico and they willll beat germany! after all who made the first point point… and it is obvious who will make the last

  • vittoria

the Argentinians PLAY ROUGH. the GERMANS should try and catch up. they’re like little girls compared to them

  • GT

This will kill if it goes into penalties…

  • owen

on the reply it is clear that ayala caught him across the chin very hard with his elbow – not on purpose (but he did foul him and lucky not to get called)

  • http://www.worldcupblog.org/world-cup-2006/liveblog-argentina-vs-germany.html abraham

    argentina will win!!
and the only thing that im gonna pk is all of u germany lovers!!!!!!!!!

  • Tom

Marco, your point is taken. My mother was born in Italy and I don’t like the stereotyping any more than you do. But it’s a game. As long as Italy wins, viva Italia! :)

  • Tom

Sometimes I wish someone was moderating this board.

  • matt

if agrentina lose blame the negative idiot of a coach

  • owen

by the way – not perfect but very good job by ref – talking to players – which seems to work amazingly – handled the first few uglyish minutes right and the game settled down to a real game – note to FIFA – that’s the way to do it…

  • http://deleted ks

both teams have taken to fake falls in this game but it does look like the germans are getting more value for theirs….

  • http://palscape.wordpress.com Bongopondit

Ballack looks a little injured (problem with knees) – he has been hobbling a bit and the passes have been way off.

Germany might regret replacing Klose with Neuville…

  • marco

The German newspapers and magazines are preparing the likely match against Italy using the similar issues of yours. The Italians do like that! They are Lazy, they don’t play fair. None of you proved me that. EVERYONE would have fell in the box. What if the aussi defender was the goalkeeper?

  • MilesDavis

First OT like first half.Very Lame… I hope send OT like Second half.

  • Bob M

After watching about 20 minutes of soccer (Gremany Vs Argentina) I now understand why this sport isn’t as popular in North America…. Everytime someone touches someone on the other team the guy goes down like a $5.00 hooker on a Saturday night !!
They even show the hit in s l o w motion on tv and they never really get hit, they just fall and squirm like a land locked fish..
    Bob M.

  • MilesDavis

PK with replacement goalie. Would this make him the Hero for life in Argentina if they did win via PK?

Wait, who made the first point point?

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

it will be a shame if this match has to be decided on a penalty shoot-out

  • pawan

oops ballack is not well. german need to drag the game to spot kick.

  • Sam

Bob M: Perhaps that because they’re not American Footballers, running around in 200 pounds of kevlar tank armor like a bunch of sissys afraid to get tackled…

  • http://dinorider.blogspot.com Dinorider

come on argentinians send those germans back to their women!

  • Matt

Bob – Have you ever watched the NBA? You graze a guy’s arm and it’s a foul, too… But somehow, someway, that’s the more popular sport. Amazing…

  • soccerlover

Bob M. we all have different opinions and I respect yours but I live in North America also and I never liked HOCKEY. its quite boring. Soccer on the other hand is played everywhere in Europe and more and I’ve always wished that I lived there because Canada’s Hockey is SOOO BORING.

  • Tom

If this game gets to PKs, Argentina has “won,” in that they survived Germany’s attacks.

  • Mortimer

Gah, an ending with Pks would be so lame.

  • http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/worldcupfan dw

“Bob M: Perhaps that because they’re not American Footballers, running around in 200 pounds of kevlar tank armor like a bunch of sissys afraid to get tackled…”

Idiot. It’s not 200 pounds, it’s not Kevlar, and it’s not tank armor.

You know why they wear pads? Because people die playing this game.

Don’t mock what you don’t understand.

  • Tom

    Sam,

I don’t understand that logic and I never will. American football players are 1000x tougher than the average soccer player. They are bigger, stronger, and get hit much, much harder. No pads = players dying.

  • Sam

10 to 1 says were going down to PK’s.

How with Argentina’s substitute goal keeper deal with that? Is he any good?

  • Jonathan

    tom
yeah but we have a backup gk
    vs
    lehman

  • Jonathan

he plays for atletico madrid in spain

  • Liliana

Mexico vs Argentina was more exciting than this game…

  • http://deleted ks

jonathan, is he not as good as lehman? wondering about the PK possibilities

  • marco

I dunno which team is easier to beat in the “may be” semifinal. Any suggestion? Who should I support?

  • Tom

I know Jonathan, but it’s still something. At least they’ll have a shot. I know nothing about the backup GK.

  • SeS

All the players look exhausted on the field. I gotta admit that I really respect the players for working through the pain and exhaustion. Major kudos.

  • Trapper

It’s not like either side is obviously playing for penalties like in the awful SWI v UKR match.

But they could try to avoid them a little bit more than seems to be the case.

    Argentina getting some corners, though.

  • MilesDavis

All the sudden Arg. Taking control of the ball.

  • Jonathan

well argentina is playing without a playmaker in midfield. So they are a little lost in the midfield. Just know geting some ball control.

  • Sam

Tom, I wasn’t being entirely serious. Plus, I have to defend American Football against people back in the UK who compare it to rugby (entirely different).

Rather, I was responding in kind to Bob’s comment.

  • MilesDavis

If we go the PK do you wish you had Oliver Kahn if you are Germany?

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

the game has not risen to the expected great heights

  • http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/worldcupfan dw

Argentina looks like they found their second wind. Or third. But their passing is way out of sync. And the Germans are doing a good job of defending the middle.

  • Bob M

I never said BasketBall was any better than Soccer.. I’m just saying when a guy goes down like he was shot and in reality he was just pushed… just looks wimpy I guess…
On the other hand.. Hockey is much faster paced and the hits are real.. except for a chosen few in the NHL they always get up after a hit…
Maybe i’d like soccer better if they’d just stop rolling around the ground after a hit.. men get up !!
    Bob M.

  • Jonathan

lehman is every good as kahn right now.

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

the ref appears lenient with German fouls

  • Jonathan

yeah that didnt look good before

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

ok..he gave one yellow there, as if anticipating my comment :)

  • marco

Woah, I forgot… About the fair and the unfair. INZAGHI is unfair. I beg pardon since now. I hope he won’t play.

  • MilesDavis

Wow Lehman is not looking good

  • Sam

The thing is, Bob, there is a lot of diving and faking, but a lot less than it actually looks like. Soccer is played very fast, and there are feet sticking out everywhere, as it were. If you’ve ever been running fast and were accidentally tripped up, you’d see that you go flying quite far.

That isn’t to say that there isn’t more rolling around on the ground than there really should be. Of course, these players are tired, and probably welcome the break.

  • owen

so the rest of the world has two sports like american football buit without the padding – rugby and aussie rules – so I guess that makes america football players wusses too? There’s always someone tougher than you – and some of them are footballers (soccer players to ignorant americans and canadians) – say Cantona and Keane – they’ve both deliberately broken people’s legs in soccer games.

also there have been literally HUNDREDS of fitness competitions around sports players and they have been won by soccer players EVERY SINGLE TIME. THe average midfielder runs between 11 and 13 miles in 90 minutes WHILE PLAYING SOCCER

  • http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/worldcupfan dw

Germans still have a sub, right?

  • Jonathan

    i smell pk’s

  • Sam

Ok, hard bets now. Who’s going to win in penalties?

My guess: Argentina. Their keeper seems more alive.

  • Stuart

I think Chris and the Sun guys are watching two different matches…Sun’s calling for a yellow on Heinze.

  • http://brazil.worldcupblog.org/ Euler

No conspiracy theories yet??? That’s odd.

  • http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/worldcupfan dw

Remember, the Brits hate Argentina more than the Germans.

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

its now surely heading for the penalties..unless

  • http://deleted ks

can’t say which will win on PKs.
i am neutral and still on tenterhooks.
can’t imagine the germans and the argentinians.

  • http://beingruthiesmom.blogspot.com Trish

I can’t take watching another game go to penalty…nerve-wracking!!

  • SeS

Germany and Argentina have used up their subs.

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

    Lehman vs Franco now

  • oyo

well here we go penalties… great game though. These 2 matched up well

  • http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/worldcupfan dw

Yep. Penalties, here we come. Silly way to end it.

  • dietmar

put this one in the books!

  • Sam

I think PKs are fitting. Both teams were very evenly matched. Perhaps if the Argentinian coach had used his subs more wisly, things would have been different…

  • GT

    oh, oh penalties.

  • Jonathan

i pray for some argentine luck

  • dietmar

    keine sorgen!

  • Trapper

Sam, I too have a feeling Argentina will win the shoot-out.

Although it would be bizarre to see a German team lose that way, given their history.

  • MilesDavis

Great Second OT much less diving and truly playing like men. Hopefully this can be contagious for the second game but I fear the worst from the fabulous actors.

  • Jonathan

good luck to both teams, more to argentina though

  • laprimavera

Germans were given so many breaks by the ref and still couldn’t finish the game in their favor..

  • hoa

I think Argentina will win b/c there will be a huge pressure for the Germans.

Bob M: people usually like to watch games they like and understand – and the same applies to football. If you don’t like or don’t understand it, you will not like it, and the first impressions you’ll have of it will be the worst possible. That is to be expected. Many people – me included – like football because they’ve grow up playing it, so they understand much of what’s going on, even if it doesn’t meet the eyes.

You cannot judge a sport by simply watching it once. You have to understand what the players go through, and how hard or easy is to do anything.

  • Liliana

Univision saying Argentina seems to have good luck in PK endings.

  • Tom

We’ll see how much the new Arg GK has in his bag o’ saves.

  • Max

All German People must be ashamed of his futbol Team …
How much cost the Referree, ..
    Fair Play ???
Germans don´t know what is it …

  • oyo

    who’se it gonna be????????

  • http://sports.godblessthefreaks.org Philip

Shades of 1990. Argentina lost its first choice GK (Pumpido) in its second game, and the sub (Goicochea) came through in two penalty kick decisions to lead them to the final. Against Germany, of course.

  • Razzle

Go Argentiiiiiinaaa !! Ole ole ole ole!

  • http://beingruthiesmom.blogspot.com Trish

CHris, how many times has Germany gone to penalty in WC?

  • http://sports.godblessthefreaks.org Philip

    Trish:

ESPN’s graphic said both teams had gone to penalties three times and won them all.

  • Trapper

Kahn seemed to wait for the camera to wish Lehmann luck according to the commentators here.

Nice of Kahn to wish him luck, I guess. Or perhaps a little egocentric?

  • Sam

    (from BBC)

Germany have had three World Cup penalty shoot-outs, against France (1982), Mexico (1986) and England (1990). They have won the lot. Argentina have had three World Cup penalty shoot-outs, Yugoslavia (1990), Italy (1990) and England (1998). They have won the lot.

  • Gerrit

    Go Argentina!

  • MilesDavis

How would you like to be Klinsminn is Lehman can’t save the day and you have him in instead of Kahn.

  • http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/worldcupfan dw

I think Germany’s about to win.

  • GT

The weight of a nation on your shoulders.. how would you like that!

    First one in!!

Watching PKs not good for the hearts.

    El ol el.

…. as predicted . The home team wins.

Some dissatisfied plyers…there is a fight on the field…

    Argentina looks done.

    1-1 each

whoaaa.does anyone know what happened in the end there??? why did they start pushing each otheR?

What happen? Why argentina players chase over Olivier Bierhoff(if i’m not mistaken) on the field.

    looked like strike to mex

Sorry, but I REALLY NEED to do this (as I`m brazilian):

    ADIOSSSSSSSSS MUCHACHOSSSSSS

hahahahaha, what a beautiful day !

  • pawan

    Lehmann is hero.

  • http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/worldcupfan dw

Klinsmann is not going to coach the US team. He now has Germany farther along than they should be.

  • el pueblo

The referee was the 12th player of the German team. There was a clear-cut penalty in the episode with Lahm. As plain as the nose on your face.
I wonder if that SOB Blatter is gonna comment on this. Is it only Ivanov that he can fing fault with?

After that two saves by Lehmann, Khan can forget to ever get back to the main team.

  • hoa

I love Argentine’s style. It was bad they have to go home, but Germany deserved its victory.

The ref did a good job today, but he should have had given Ballack a yellow for faking being hit on the face.

  • Kaya

this is the worst moment of my life.

Oh no el pueblo.. don’t even try.

  • Craig

i know that Kaya is likely deadly serious, but that made me laugh out loud. In my cubicle. Sorry.

  • Roland

Jeez, this is turning into such a disappointing cup. The two most entertaining teams are now eliminated.

Oh well, congratulations Germany. You have the home field and you’re taking advantage of it. Kudos.

Btw, this message would have appeareared ten minutes ago, but your SERVER SUCKS.

  • Oscar

Beautiful! Bye bye bye bye Argentina!!!!!!!

Never really rooted for the Germans for anything before, but i did today and they did not dissapoint…

    What a relief indeed!

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

my heart has now gone out of this WC :(

  • http://deleted Karl

Der Spiel ist 90 minuten… oder bis die Mannshaft hat gewonnen!

  • j.m.

Ha ha Argentina – Sorry you could not get Horacio Marcelo Elizondo as your referee. I am sure you could have “won”. (wink wink)
    Bravi Germany!

  • Craig

I want Brazil to make it to the final, but I’m not looking for them to face off with Germany on July 9 — repeat of 2002. Where’s the fun in that?

  • Tujeni

    Deutschland uber alles!!!!!!!!Ja,Ja
Next it will be Italy’s turn to be shown the door. Go Duitsland!

  • ab initio

Unfortunately my prediction that Germany would win came true ( a first in this WC).

I knew if it came to PKs Germany would win as they are technically more sound on such set pieces.

Argentina played great but I think their coach let them down. Late in regular time (60-70 min) you could see Crespo and others sagging. And this allowed Germany to control the ball more. The coach should have used substitutions right then and brought in Messi to maintain the attack for the last 30 minutes of the game instead playing defense and allowing Germany to play over the heads.

This is a real shame as I wanted Argentina in the finals but now we have the home team who have a very good chance to be there.

  • Sangeeth

what a dissapointment, now i lost 2 dollars. WTF all the star players were taken out… Saviola, messi … Maxi got a yellow card for falling down? the referee was retarded. and what was the fight in the end all about. did oliver say some bad to the argentines.

  • Sam

Whew! We took down WCB’s servers there, I think! I couldn’t get back on until now.

Too many people clicking “refresh” so many times during the penalties. Just like a Denial Of Service attack.

  • Kristine

I love you Germany! (actually just Michael Ballack:))) I have watched the 2nd half of the game and I cheered Germany on…and on…and felt sooo happy when Klose scored! Of course, I was terrified and almost could’t watch Ballack at the penalty spot…Oh yeah!!!! Congratulations Germany! See u in the finals (mandatory…where else can we see the beautiful Ballack:)))) Loool! You guys party safely!—-Kristina/USA

  • Stuart

Tough way for a hard-fought match to end. A shame about Argentina having to leave, they’re damn good…scary anytime they have the ball. Still, Germany played them straight up and either side winning is appropriate all things considered.

If Germany’s involved and it goes to penalties, it’s over…they’re just too clinical. I’m sure they’ll screw-up and lose a shoot-out sometime, but today it was more of the same.

I’ll be keen to see what the German sports press makes of it, given all the ragging on their defense before the tournament.

Nice to see Lehmann come up big after the Champions League final, gotta be a HUGE boost for his confidence.

I’m getting an image in my mind of the final with Brasil going much the same way.

  • Argentine

    Germany!! F- you!!!

  • http://deleted ks

hey mohan, were most indians rooting for argentina?

  • Tujeni

I predict the finals to be between Germany and France, with France winning 1-0. And that is my final “answer.”

The shame is penalty kicks. It’s always interesting to me how resistant soccer fans are to any technological fixes to the refereeing, often calling it out as something that only Americans would think is a good idea, but have largely accepted this total American-style bastardization of the sport. I’m afraid Argentina has been hoist on its own petard today. They should have gotten a PK in regulation for Lahm’s foul on Rodriguez in the box; instead they get called for diving, not because the ref was biased, but because their reputation as the world’s biggest divers preceded them. Germany beat them at their own game today, much to the disgust of my son, a Germany fan but passionately opposed to diving, injury feigning, and time-wasting.

Does anyone know what happens to all of the yellow cards given to players when they enter the semi’s? Do the yellow cards from this round follow the players to the end?

  • Konrad

two very entertaining teams…a fight to the finish. nobody likes to see penalty kicks decide a match, but it was basically a draw and penalties is a better way to decide than flipping a coin. Germany will make it to the finals…

  • Liliana

Any news on the Argentine skirmish at the end of the game?

  • Lurch McCoy

    Blame Aregentna’s loss on Pekerman.

    Horrible, horrible substitutions.

  • matt

all you people moaning stop it.

the reason argentina out is when they were 1-0 up and in control of the game they took of all their creative players and started wasting time.

Today argentina are out because the coach was unbelivably negative, his resigniation revlects a admitance he blew a nations hopes

    Semifinals:
    Germany vs. Italy ; 2-0
    France vs. Protugal; 1-0

    Finals:
    Germany vs. France; 0-1

Why? Because Germany kicked Italy’s b$##, and Portugal dissapointed the Queen’s men.
Also France outplayed the amazing Amazonians, and Italy outclassed the Ural Mt. dwellers.
And Finally, the sophisticated French were just too good for the brutes from Bavaria.

And there, in a nutshell, you have it…

    Yes, yellows are still on.

  • dave

to mahesh from india, kiss my german feet now, for your earlier comments,

Berlin! Berlin! Wir fahren nach Berlin!!! XD

  • hoa

I agree that Argentine manager made poor decision today.

  • Tujeni

Aber warum? Sie wird einfach verloren im Berlin! Vive la France!!

To all GERMAN fans, Congratulations from all AUSTRALIAN fans. May your team go on and win the world cup.

I’d like to take this chance to thank all GERMAN fans for your support, kindness and general good will and spirit to all Australians throughout the world cup who have visited your country.

You have been nothing but great hosts and more importantly great people.

You have great hearts as football team fans and you are blessed with a super team.

I have nothing against Argentina but i fald you won today and i was overwhelmed by your support of our Socceroos’during my time in Munich.

Good luck Germany and thanks for the memories.

  • Los Angelina

Why can’t Argentina just lose? The are the biggest whiners in the whole cup. Well, today Jens Lehmann had the hands of God (and this time fair…). You guys are the biggest soccer cry babies I have ever seen. I respect the Brazilians but not Argentina…

  • futbol

ARG coach made a poor decision to take forward players out too early.

    My prediction was wrong.

  • Rome

Gotta love that ref Lubos Michel. Great job! There goes Merk’s last chance to ref the final since Germany will most likely make it.
I’m keeping my fingers crossed for Michel to ref the final between Germany-Portugal.

  • Tujeni

Jeder geht unten in Berlin, ausgenommen Frankreich! Vive la France!

  • FiNi

    We have been robbed!!!!!!!!!
Whoever says that the reef was impartial has no sense of football.
Wathever, it all stays at home, in Europe.
    “House allways wins”
    :’(

  • owen

as an impartial observer – i didn’t care who won – all I wanted was a good straight up game and in fact that was what we got.

It is amazing that the argentinians are blaming the ref – Germany scored fair and square and there was no way that was a penalty. Argentina didn’t deserve to lose but they didn’t deserve to win either. I also didn’t see them playing better than Germany – if anything Germany played a little better. Nobody likes penalties but frankly the two saved by lehmann were the two weakest of all those taken.

In many ways this was the final – I thought these were the two strongest teams left – but by this stage almost anything can happen…

  • Keyser

I don’t blame the ref. the match was there at grasp, and instead of go and grab it by the throat we let germany recover and come back. the rest is history.
sad sad sad. we had no guts to take the risk to terminate the match.
it’s our fault. and we must live with it.

  • Lurch McCoy

Seems like the “small,” precision passing, slow build up teams (spain and argentina) were manhandled by much larger opponents.

  • lkt

Didn’t look like a manhandling to me, just inspired goalkeeping on Lehman’s part. But the “small, precision passing team” would likely have put it away in regulation if Pekerman had put in Aimar and Messi. I mean, WTF??, clinging to a 1-0 lead against a German team that could strike anytime, and you leave those two on the bench??

  • matt

worst thing is the germans between 55 and 80 minutes of the game were their for the taking but the coach wen’t negative and they blew it

very sad end to a disapointing world cup, all the attractive teams are out

  • natalia.

ARGENTINA DEFINITELY DESERVED TO WIN!!!. GFERMANY DID OK, BUT IT WAS OVBIOUS THAT IT WAS ARRANGED. ARGENTINA HAS AN EXCELLENT TEAM, AND THEY DESERVED TO MOVE ON TO FINALS.. THE FINAL WOULD HAVE BEEN: ARGENTINA VS BRAZIL, AND EVERYBODY KNOWS THAT.
ARGENTINA PROVED TO BE AN OUTSTANDING TEAM, THAT FIGHTS TILL THE END, NO MATTER WHAT, AND MOST IMPORTANT..THEY PLAY FAIR AND SQUARE! THEY REALLY SHOW WHAT FOOTBALL SPIRIT IS ABOUT!! AND THEY MADE THE MOST INCREDIBLE GOALS OF THE ENTIRE WORLD CUP!

  • Un argentino

If anyone knows spanish read this. it´s to show how we argentines feel about our team and how important football is for our country. congratulations to Germany, but Brazil will definitely win!

  • dirk

The game ended as it should have; in a draw. Argentina retired after the first goal and was punished for it. Germany did not play its A Game. Fact is, it came to the PK’s and Germany was better there, so the unfortunate result of having to decide a winner by PK was a direct result of Argentina having left its chances on the pitch when it decided to play defense rather than attempt to strike for a second goal when it was up. Don’t cry for me Argentina. You had the chances, but didn’t take them. Germany was stronger mentally. The better team ultimately won, because they were tougher.

  • Axel

First of all, congrats to Germany. Although both teams played very well, and let us at the edge of our seats the whole match, they both deserved to win, but i must highlight argentina´s tactics on the field, and what somebody said before, that they really fought till the end. Besides, the fact that Abondanzieri got hurt also turned things round. Germany finally scored and well, “home always win”
Congratulations to the argentiniANs, they really left a mark on this world cup!

  • http://www.yahoo.com Keira

i go to a summer camp, but I spent most of the afternoon watching the game. the argentines played well, so did germany. being german, i like germany more than the other teams.

  • FiNi

ouhggggggggggggg I’m so angry that El Pato wasn’t there at the penaltys!! He is so good, when he played at Boca Juniors he always left the match being the hero after a penalty definition. Do you remember the match with Pumas? there, no tonly he cached 3 penalties, but also kiked himself the last one!!
Franco, I though you were good…….
Gracias “un argentino”, esa propaganda siempre me hace llorar, es muy lindo.
    Proud to be an Argie!!!

  • gunter

Germany was fully deserving of the win. As usual European football to S Americans to school.
