LiveBlog: Angola-Portugal

Portugal wins its opening match in Group D play. Check out all the play by play below and feel free to leave your thoughts on the game.

Final: Portugal 1-0 Angola

– Goal Pauleta (4 min)

Full time Portugal comes away with a victory after an early goal from Pauleta. It is three points for the favorites, but credit goes to Angola for hanging in there and making a game of it in their World Cup debut.

91:36 Maniche with a bomb that is deflected over the crossbar by Ricardo. Heck of a match for the Angola keeper.

90:50 One last shot of Ronaldo pouting on the bench. Unofficially we have him at 32 pouts for the game.

90:00 3 minutes extra time. My heart is pounding. Come on lads.

88:37 Mateus with a shot on goal for Angola. Crowd is on its feet imploring the underdog. The final two minutes are going to be something.

88:03 Portugal might come away with three points but should they be pleased with the way they played? Hard to say. They have been very inconsistent.

87:15 Angola on the attack. Mantorras is one big boy. Angola just can’t string it together in the final third.

85:03 When you say Palancas Negras with a German accent it sounds really, really funny. Don’t mention the war.

83:52 Just to be clear I meant Figo might not be able to get up from the ground. With Viagra these days the other thing is possible no matter your age.

83:03 Figo spends a lot of time on the ground. At his age he might not be able to get up. Portugal header goes over the bar.

81:35 Portugal sub. Thiago out and Viana in. Thiago has a serious farmer’s tan.

80:46 Angola needs to go balls out this final ten minutes. It does them no good to lose by a goal. Might as well push forward and try to get a point out of this.

79:04 Valente shown a yellow card for Portugal. Figueriedo comes off for Angola. Miloy on as Angola makes its last sub.

78:45 Big round of applause to Angola for keeping this one interesting. They could have been crushed early on but they still could come away with something here if Portugal isn’t careful.

77:03 I commented yesterday that Prince William doesn’t ever sweat. Figo, on the other hand, is always sweating. Might have some kind of disorder. Hell of a player, sweat and all.

75:48 Big Phil pacing on the Portugal sideline. He has one of the great faces in sport. It looks like he is made of plastic. Great coach. Mad love for Big Phil.

74:35 The rest of the World Cup Blog staff are laughing at me as I swear at the tv. Sorry Portugal fans, but I am pulling hard for an Angola goal.

72:45 A shot in the crowd of a dude wearing a condom on his head. This is Germany and there are lots of brothels, but you don’t need to wear protection at the stadium.

71:59 Figo loses a boot and Nike smiles. That will be in the next advert.

71:35 Reports from Angola say that people there are begging their team to score a goal. Petit out and Maniche in for Portugal.

70:03 Angola’s new strategy is to boot and chase.

68:50 Loco with a shot that lives up to his name. Edson in, Ze Kalanga out for Angola. Edson is one of the least likeable players on Angola’s roster. Watch him score.

68:29 I get the feeling Angola is only going to score off a Portugal mistake or a lucky goal. 20 more minutes for a hero to emerge. If a Palancas scores he’ll get $5,000. That goes a long way in Luanda.

65:56 Miguel is having a solid game on the wing for Portugal. Figo starting to show his age some in the midfield. I expect to see a few more subs soon. A lot of tired players out there.

64:35 Would never have guessed that Angola would still be in this one after the dreadful start. Still have hope that we might see a draw. I think the beer is going to my head.

62:40 Portugal crowd trying to lift their team. Both sides look a little winded. I can relate. This liveblogging is draining work.

60:57 Thiago with the shot and he is denied by Ricardo. The Angola keeper is keeping his team in the game. Amazing that he doesn’t play for any club teams. My men’s team could use him.

60:22 Great shot of Ronaldo pouting on the bench. The pouting meter is off the charts.

58:34 Mantorras comes on for Akwa. Mantorras is one of the classiest players on the Angola roster. This is a great move by the Professor. Costinha in for Ronaldo for Portugal. Defensive move from Scolari. Have fun pouting on the bench Ronnie.

57:46 Ricardo with the save on the Pauleta shot. Ricardo is the new Shaka Hislop. If Trini can do it, why not Angola?

56:15 Portugal playing ping pong with one corner kick after another. Hey, Angola has gone 53 minutes without giving up a goal. I feel good about that. We just need to put one in. Come on lads.

55:03 If Angola comes back to get a point I will cut my hair in the “Loco”.

53:45 The game is starting to get bogged down in the middle third of the pitch. Portugal looks content to be up by one. Angola looks like it is having a hard time in the attack.

52:14 Portugal has controlled this game but I would hardly say they have been impressive. What is impressive is the bandage over Andre’s eye for Angola. Looks like it is holding his head together.

50:58 Angola started to put the cleats in against Portugal. When in doubt, kick them in the shins. That’s what my dad always used to say. Yellow card to Andre.

49:02 Starting to wonder why I adopted Angola for this World Cup. Is it too late to say my favorite team is Brazil?

48:29 Figuerido in Angola’s midfield is truly abysmal. He spent the first three years living in Angola before moving to Portugal. I think he is confused what country he is playing for tonight.

46:33 Do you suppose that Angola player asked his barber to give him a “Loco” haircut. Looks like it is about half done. Kids, please don’t follow Loco’s lead. Get a full haircut.

45:01 The second half is underway in Cologne. Will Angola shock the world and get a result or will this be Portugal’s night? We shall see. We’ll also see C. Ronaldo pout for another 45 min. Can you imagine the look on his face if he gives up an own goal? Would be priceless.

End of Halftime I have shed the flag cape and re-filled the beer mug. I’m good to go for another 45 minutes. Thank you all for joining me and for your comments. You are all much more amusing than I could ever dream to be. Here’s hoping for a great second half.

Halftime After a fast start from Portugal, the Palancas Negras of Angola settled things down a bit. This game is still up in the air, although Portugal looks like the far superior team. I’m going to go refill the beer mug and will be back right before the second half. What are your thoughts thus far? Does my beloved Angola have a shot of coming away with a point or is this one already over?

44:21 Ronaldo fires another shot on goal but he won’t score as long as he has that kit on. Ricardo nice save for Angola. Good save from a guy who doesn’t even play for a club team. He shares that in common with me.

42:17 Andre drills a shot on the Portugal goal and earns Angola a corner. Nothing comes out of it but Angola has shown some signs of life. As long as it is a one goal game anything could happen, right?

41:45 Both teams look a little tired now. I can relate. Drinking beer and watching football all day long is exhausting. Hey kids, after tonight’s game we are 1/8 of the way through the World Cup. Going by too fast.

40:12 It must be fun to be in the Portugal midfield right now. They are getting no pressure on the ball and you get to be near the pretty boy C. Ronaldo. His mere presence makes everyone else beautiful.

37:47 I get the sense that Angola just wants to hold off until halftime. They could have been killed early but are hanging on. Do any of you think they can even this up? I still have faith but I am an atheist.

36:21 Crisis in Berlin. I’m out of beer and thirsty as hell. Can I make it another 10 minutes? 50-50 odds right now.

35:22 Ronaldo did not miss much with that header on the corner. He isn’t going to score as long as he wears a cut off jersey. How is he allowed to get away with that. I really don’t like that guy.

34:00 Angola concedes a corner. Ronaldo heads it off the crossbar. Angola races down to the other end and gets nothing. End to end action here.

33:21 Note to anyone else who liveblogs: don’t wear a hot flag as a cape when you are typing a million words a minute. Starting to sweat more than the players. Hot day here in Berlin.

32:17 After a dreadful start Angola has turned things around a bit. Just as I type that Pauleta barely misses a header to put Portugal up by a pair. Should have burried that one.

31:07 Angola captain Akwa with a shot that misses by about a mile. The cat isn’t afraid to shoot. I hear he has been quite a hit with the German ladies. My sources say the town of Celle, Germany is smitten with him. They must fancy guys who bicycle.

29:27 No sign of Beckenbauer in the crowd yet. Maybe his helicopter ran out of gas.

28:25 How would you describe the color of Portugal’s kits? Are they maroon, burngandy or something else?

27:40 Angola’s Jamba showed the yellow card for taking down Ronaldo.

26:47 Angola starting to play better and string together passes. This might be why they qualified for the World Cup. Beat out Nigeria in qualifying. Just spotted a tattoo on the back of a Portugal player. Isn’t that a chick thing?

25:35 Akwa with his second bicycle kick of the game. Flies it high and wide but boy is he getting on the highlight shows tonight. Must have watched the movie Victory! when he was little. Pele he is.

23:19 Angola discovers that there is another half of the field. Matteus gets off a bomb from outside but it flies over the crossbar. That’s what I’m talking about Angola!

22:09 Pretty much a one sided affair so far in this one. If Angola is this weak can you imagine how a coach-less Togo will be?

21:33 Shot of Scolari on the sideline. He is happy not to be coaching England tonight. Angola’s coach is nicknamed the Professor. He needs to come up with something smart to make this game more competitive.

20:22 Simao gets mugged by Delgado in the corner. Free kick Portugal. It runs over the other touchline and Portugal contines the attack. Angola fans have to be nervous anytime the ball is in their defensive third.

18:09 The Uruguay ref has a bit of a spare tire in his backside but so far hasn’t had to do much work. Still 1-0 Portugal. The game has settled after a frentic Portugal start.

17:35 The problem for Angola is that their pants are too tight. How can they move around in those things?

17:02 This is the 8th game I have watched on German tv and I still don’t understand a friggin’ word they are saying. Something about Angola playing like arse. My translation might be off though.

15:48 Angola keeper Ricardo down on the turf being attended to by the training staff. He might be wise to get off the pitch now the way his defense is playing. He’s up and alive.

14:34 Let’s hear it for night time! No shadows in this game. Can’t Germany do something about the sun? Like hide it during televised games.

13:12 Portugal with tons of space to operate in the midfield. Pauleta has been criticized a lot in the past but that opening goal has to be a good confidence booster for him.

12:26 Portugal free kick from 40 yards out. Cleared away by Angola but controlled by Portugal. Angola looked like it was going to get crushed in this one but things have settled down a bit. Only a matter of time before Portugal scored again though.

10:23 Akwa with a huge bicycle effort but he is unable to connect. That will be on the highlight reels after the game.

9:14 Any time the ball is near the Angola fullbacks you have to be nervous. They look completely scared and outclassed. The forwards are playing ok, but the midfield is nowhere to be seen. .

8:24 Angola has gone 5 minutes without giving up another goal. Small accomplishments.

7:07 Angola corner kick smothered by Portugal’s keeper Ricardo. Why do both keepers have to been named Ricardo? That is confusing. They should have co-ordinated better.

6:16 Angola has no answer for Ronaldo and Figo in the midfield. Figueriedo tries a shot from the outside. Settle down boys. The game isn’t over.

5:04 Absolutely the worst possible start for Angola. I’m afraid this one could turn into a blowout unless the Palancas settle down. Are they even playing with a backline? Doesn’t look like it.

3:47 GOAALLLLL> Figo feeds a cross to Pauleta. Terrible defending by Angola. 1-0 Portugal.

3:15 Figo dancing around in the midfield like a dancer. He has such grace. Too bad his hair is so greasy this time around.

2:27 Angola kicks it over the Portugal endline. A minor accomplishment!

1:21 Portugal on the attack again. Figo crosses it in but it is smothered by Angola keeper Ricardo. This one could get ugly early if the Palancas aren’t better in the back.

:06 Portugal races down the field and Pauleta almost scores. That would have been the fastest World Cup goals ever. Bad sign for Angola.

Kickoff We’re underway in Cologne as Angola makes its World Cup debut against the heavily favored team from Portugal. I’m pumped. Thanks for joining me for the next 90 minutes of football fun.

Pregame:
3 minute countdown: The players from both sides shake hands and the captains exchange gifts. Angola will play a 4-1-3-2.

5 minute countdown: Portugal’s national anthem is played. The players are standing shoulder to shoulder and singing loud and proud. This is such a great World Cup tradition.

6 minute countdown: Angola wearing white kits with red, black and yellow strip. Portugal wearing its purple Nike shirts. Both teams appear relaxed as the Angola national anthem is played. What a special moment it is for a war-torn African country. Goose bumps.

8 minute countdown: A beautiful evening in Cologne. No shadows on the pitch for a change. The referees from Uruguay lead both teams onto the pitch. The crowd is decidedly pro-Portugal but there are pockets of Angola support in the stands. What an exciting moment as their team makes its World Cup debut.

10 minute countdown: To set the scene here, I am wearing an Angola flag as a cape. I have a nice pilsner sitting next to me and nervous butterflies in my stomach. Angola is a team I adopted back in Novemeber. I apologize in advance to fans of Portugal. I’ll try to keep the LiveBlog neutral but it might be tough. This is one game where I have a rooting interest.

15 minute countdown: Angola is getting paid $5,000 per goal in the World Cup. I’m going to dig deep into my pockets and throw in an extra 2 Euros for each goal they score. I’m prepared to go broke if that is what it takes to see them win.

20 minute countdown: German television is showing where Angola is located on the world map. After tonight’s game everyone will know where it is located!

30 minute countdown: The German television shows both teams getting off the team buses. Angola looking good in some stylish Puma tracksuits. Portugal looking shabby in Nike gear. Advantage: Angola.

40 minute countdown: There is an Angola flag hanging out a window of the building next to the World Cup Blog Berlin HQ. A good luck sign if I have ever seen one.

50 minute countdown: I am ready for this one. My beloved Angola makes its World Cup debut against a very good Portugal team. I hope the lads are as fired up as I am!

It has been a hot day here in Germany but should be ideal football weather come kick off. What are your predictions?

With all respect to Angola, Bob, I have to say Portugal will get a cool 3-1. :p

  • http://www.pertinentverge.blogspot.com Darkoze

Angola leads by 1-0. Former colonial oppressor comes back to win 2-1, despite best efforts of Doctors without Frontiers to juice up the Black Impalas.

  • AJ

Bob, I wish your team the best of luck but they have no chance tonight. Looking forward to your commentary. :-)

  • http://sports.godblessthefreaks.org Philip

Since I have no idea what songs actual Angolan fans sing, I’m going to go around singing the song “Morena de Angola” by Chico Buarque:

Morena de Angola que leva o chocalho amarrado na canela
Será que ela mexe o chocalho ou o chocalho é que mexe com ela

Angola is one of the weakest teams qualifying in the World Cup and it would be interesting to see how Portugal would win this game…

  • lon

    heya all am back :P

  • Ekul

I’m predicting a 2-0 victory for Portugal tonight, and if they lose, I’ll be predicting a crying Cristiano Ronaldo, just like the final of Euro2004.

  • Kiko

The game will end 2-2 (I hope).

  • C’mon Cristiano Ronaldo, show you deserve your second name.

I’m also rooting for a Deco goal, so Brazil can get a SECOND goal without they even start playing! :D

  • http://sports.godblessthefreaks.org Philip

    Here’s an interesting link: mms://rdp.oninet.pt/radiomundial

Apparently RDP (Portuguese radio) has a channel set up just for the WC. So surely they must be planning to carry the play-by-play there….

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

7 games so far and not a single penalty yet ! are refs getting tougher? or have players forgotten how to act?? :D

  • sabrina

I thought Iran performed pretty well in the last game given they were the underdogs. Since Anglo is also the underdog here, I predict 2-1

  • Ali Siddiqui

Hey gang how’s everyone feeling after that last game?

  • Ali Siddiqui

Those of you looking for some online stream love look no further! Someone named Travis posted this link up during the last few minutes of the Mexico vs. Iran game. I tried it and it works so far. You get 4 flavours apparently, Chinese, German, Arabic, and English I believe, channels for live streams of the games.

    http://www.a7lakalam.com/worldcup2006/live.htm

  • http://www.millioncapsules.com MillionCapsules

Portugal, a side that lost to Greece in Euro. Just don’t rule out Angola’s chances.

  • Ekul

    Ali Siddiqui where’s the English?

  • Keyser

I don’t wait too much from angola. in a friendly against argentina they didn’t show anything.
and portugal nows this is the very last chance for their ‘golden generation’ to achieve something meaningful.

  • Ali Siddiqui

I think it’s the one in the Top Middle. I think we have to wait for the game to actually start for to see if it’s there. :(

  • Bidemi

I’m a insane for predicting a 5-0 score in favor of the Portugal?

  • Bidemi

I think I’m insane for jumbling my words up like that though.

  • Deco on the bench. :(

  • Ali Siddiqui

Ok i see the Chinese one working. The German one only the splash screen yet no game yet. I got a green screen for the Arabic one…this is annoying! >:(

  • http://sports.godblessthefreaks.org Philip

    Bidemi,

No, that’s the “logical” view. But Portugal has managed to amaze everyone with the upsets it’s suffered in the last three notable international competitions (counting the Olympics). I’ll believe the Portuguese will live up to their reputation when I see it.

  • sabrina

good game, too bad ABC isn’t broadcsting hte next one. No one i know has cable arnd here

  • Bidemi

Hurry, hurry, hurry. Step right up! Make your predictions for this match.

How much do the Impalas get blown out by?

    5-0 seems very likely.

    Do I hear a 6-0?

  • Keyser

isn’t it a machete what is in the Angola’s flag?
    that’s a flag with attitude!

  • Keyser

isn’t it a machete what is in the Angola’s flag?
    that’s a flag with attitude

  • Ali Siddiqui

I think 3 – 0 Portugal just to be nice.

  • sabrina

    thank you for the link!!!!

  • Keyser

sorry for the double post buddies

  • http://www.pertinentverge.blogspot.com Darkoze

A somewhat endowed Angolan fan was jumping, it seems, to test the strength of her shirt’s fabric.
An encouraging “Salta! Salta!” came from the Univision commentator, obviuosly also interested in the fabric’s tensile strength.

  • Angola has a Zé. Watch out for him.

  • Bleh

I always like to see the ‘underdogs’ win, except against England :P

    Good luck Angola! :)

  • sabrina

    i say 2-1

  • Ali Siddiqui

I want to apologize to everyone that the streams maybe out of whack. At least for me the Chinese one is out of synch and is buffering every few seconds. German channel nothing yet, arabic channel still green.

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

we have to wait till brazil’s game for well endowed fans ;)

  • http://www.millioncapsules.com MillionCapsules

Yeah, Portugal’s nchances of winning is better of course, just don’t write Angola out. Portugal seems to play the kinda style that just isn’t them.
Either way, both not really a possible WC title contender.

  • Ali Siddiqui

Darkoze, you got my attention all of asudden…damn this slow stream!

  • Roland

    Here we go!

  • Keyser

this is starting well or angola!!
almost a WC record by portugal!

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

    what an opening !!

  • Ali Siddiqui

Good luck Bob! I’m secretly supporting Angola right now! :D

  • Keyser: Yes. The machete represents their rural work (you know, they use it to cut whatever they plant that I forgot what it was) while the cog represents their mechanical work and industry. They might change the flag in the future.

  • Ali Siddiqui

    Dear Lord that was fast!

  • Roland

    My prediction: Portugal 3 – 1.

  • http://sports.godblessthefreaks.org Philip

    Ali,

At least it’s working for you. All I get when I click through is a misterious message among the Arabic:

    1
    _gArchiveHostPath_ + “/bb_intro_march_28″

Maybe someone’s PHP code is broken. :)

  • Ali Siddiqui

I think Paulete did that on purpose to throw off the Angolans. It certainly shocked me! O_O

  • Ali Siddiqui

Philip you should try the one of the very left. The chinese one. That seems to be the only one working so far.

    http://www.a7lakalam.com/worldcup2006/live.htm

  • Portugal clearly superior. 1-0.

  • Bidemi

Well that’s 1 of the 5 i predicted. More will come.

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

    floodgate has opened !!!

  • Roland

    GOOOLLLLL! POOORRRRRTTUGAAAALLLLL!!!!!!

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

    nice pass by Figo

  • Ali Siddiqui

Looks like my channel has a bit of delay…no goal seen so far!

  • Raybron

Wow, that was the worst defensive play I’ve seen all tournament. Truly sad. Hopefully this will not be a completely awful game, but things don’t look good.

  • Keyser

    obrigado Ze,
    who said 6-0?
    3′ and we’re already 1-0

  • Roland

Angola’s defense is awful. I gave them a sympathy goal.

  • http://www.pertinentverge.blogspot.com Darkoze

Caught a shot of the Angloan coach on the sideline after the Portugal goal. Hope it’s the Bible and he’s searching for suitable Last Rites passages; the Black Impalas are lokking rather pale.

  • Ali Siddiqui

    Oh my. O_O

  • Roland

    Angola corner here.

  • http://sports.godblessthefreaks.org Philip

And lo and behold, Ali’s link works in Internet Exploiter. I’m really very very very not fond of Microsoft-only sites, but for the next month I guess I can’t afford to be choosy.

  • http://www.soccercommercials.com Chris C

From wikipedia- The national flag of Angola is split horizontally into an upper red half and a lower black half. The red is for the blood spilt by Angolans during their independence struggles, while the black is for the continent of Africa. The symbol in the middle is of a crossed cog wheel (representing workers and industry) and machete (representing the peasantry) with a yellow star. It was adopted during a time when Angola had a Marxist government, and it thus supposed to evoke the image of the hammer and sickle found on the flag of the former Soviet Union, a common symbol of Communism.

  • Ninj

    horrible dive from the keeper…

  • Ali Siddiqui

If I had to put money on the table for this game it would be 4-0.

  • Roland

    Pretty pass.

  • Ali Siddiqui

LOL! Philip I’m watching this off of Firefox…maybe I should try IE right now to see if my stream gets better.

  • http://notasport.blogspot.com Sid

I still don’t understand why Futbal / Soccer is so big. I gave it a try this weekend and tried to watch a game or two. It is soo boring, and according to some of my friends it is not even a sport??? notasport.blogspot.com

I guess I just do not get it.

  • Roland

Whoah! Almost a bicycle kick goal by the Angolan.

  • Angola looks like they have some tricks up their sleeves, but really Portugal is dancing on their side of the field.

  • http://sports.godblessthefreaks.org Philip

In honor of Sid, maybe they’ll let me post a picture:

  • Ali Siddiqui

And you being here Sid does….what?

  • Keyser

Sid, I think the same about baseball.

  • Laura

Is it just me or do some of those Portugal guys look awfully fast?

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

everyone is getting carried away now

  • Ninj

    Nice trolling, Sid. Cmon angola!

  • http://sports.godblessthefreaks.org Philip

Nope, you’ll have to click through to the troll picture yourself i guess….

    Ali,

That’s strange, I couldn’t even get it close to working in Firefox. I wonder if I don’t have the Windoze Media plugin installed properly?

  • Roland

    Portual totally controlling this game.

  • Ali Siddiqui

OH man…the Portugal def are all over the Angolan forwards. :(

  • Sid: I don’t know if this is a joke or not, but if you don’t understand why it’s the biggest sport in the world, it’s not one game that will change your mind. It has a lot to do with culture, and if you like sports that are plastified/marketized to death (ie, most american sports), you’ll never “get” it.

  • Roland

Angolan goalie took a hell of a knee to the chest.

  • Ali Siddiqui

Yeah, it maybe that Philip. Odd thing is I’m not getting alot of buffering now that I’m using IE. Odd ?_?

  • Keyser

    auch. that hurts!

  • Ali Siddiqui

I dare say even though I’m comfortable in my manliness I stil have to admit that Figo and Paulete are looking quite handsome.

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

the Portuguese wave keeps coming relentlessly

  • Ninj

    *backs away from Ali*

  • http://www.pierretristam.com Candide’s Notebooks

Portugal seem intent on overwhelming the opposition. They must have hammered it into their head before the game: no overconfidence. But isn’t this the team that was embarrassed on its home field in Euro 2004, and equally embarrassed in World Cup ‘02? Not a stellar World Cup history for Portugal despite having Figo, one of the best players in the world in his distant prime. He’s collecting Social Securuty these days, but still playing, as you just saw.

    http://www.pierretristam.com

  • Ali Siddiqui

Oh come now Ninj. Even my girlfriend here doesn’t think that’s odd…infact she agrees…wait a minute!! >_>

  • Ninj

just kidding Ali, I’m looking forward to seeing Milan Baros tomorrow ;)

  • Roland

    Portugal corner.

  • http://pepys_s.rediffblogs.com/ mohan

No way Angola is winning this

  • http://www.pierretristam.com Total Football

Not much possession for Angola, but less of a sense of panic, too. That early goal may just give Portugal the overconfidence they prepared against! But so far Angola has found no answer.

    http://www.pierretristam.com

  • Keyser

is Paolo Maldini still in Italian’s side?
    Meeeoooowwwwww!!!!!

  • Ninj

Portugal don’t seem to have the confidence to take as much control over the game as they should have.

Meanwhile Angola aren’t doing much other than occasionally getting in the way.

  • Ali Siddiqui

See even Keyser’s gettin’ into the mood…err…feeling…ummm I’ll stop. O_o

The half is running away from Angola as fast as Portugal’s players are outrunning them, outgunning them and outmuscling them, but not yet outsweating them. Angola have still managed a couple of rifle shots inside the penalty area. They may as well. Portugal’s anti-aircraft machinery is untested: it could well be Angola’s luck; Ah! another scissor kick by Akwa!

  • Roland

I’d say the match has been very fairly called so far, yes.

  • Something the brazilian commentator on SporTV said and I think it’s true: up to now, most (if not all) games are having a huge loss in excitement on the second half, since teams start going really slowly after a while… more than usual. It seems all teams are just out of shape.

  • Ali Siddiqui

“71:59 Figo loses a boot and Nike smiles. That will be in the next advert.”

    Hahahaha! :D

Oh how I miss that great bald referee! He was one of the best in the World!

  • Raybron

Very poor game so far, apart from Figo’s early brilliance. Easily the poorest game of the tournament. Both sides have had brief sparks but Portugal’s inability to break finish once more against one of the worst defenses in the tournament and Angola’s inability to finish have snuffed out those rare chances for decent play.

  • Oh, they got their Zé out :( No more hope for Angola.

  • Dino

Pierluigi Collina… they said he’s to old (age descrimination)

  • http://www.soccercityusa.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?num=1149197067 Ninj

ze – I think it’s because we’ve been watching everyone’s first game in the tournament, they race out all excited to get started, then by the second half are remembering there’s still at least 2 more games to go…

  • Ali Siddiqui

Well, age is a factor especially with a referee having to run back and forth on the field.

  • Raybron

I think the point about some teams not being fit is absolutely accurate. Portugal looked like they were going to run past Angola all game, but apparently they used all their energy in the first ten minutes.

Also, I don’t think the refereeing has been bad or dispositive in any way, but it has been slightly skewed against Angola; that yellow at the end of the first half was particularly odd.

  • Roland

Portugal should score again, but the Angolan defense is playing well right now.

  • Dino

Agree but if he’s as fast as the younger oneswhy not…

Figo can’t put in a better free kick than that? ‘Golden generation’ is starting to crack.

  • Bobbio

Ugh. Face it, this match is over. 1:0 to Portugal!

  • Ali Siddiqui

No idea Dino. Maybe they felt that they needed a change in the Referees to make sure there wasn’t any problems. Especially, with the news of a few ref’s being investigated for bribery and match fixing.

  • Ali Siddiqui

Angola is really making Portugal work for their money. A miracle goal would be nice though to sweeten the deal.

  • Dino

Good point and it so happens that he’s from Italy….

  • Raybron

Angola are playing well enough and taking advantage of Portugal’s fatigue when possible, but I just don’t see the kind of commitment or enthusiasm from them that we saw from the Soca Warriors yesterday (down a man no less).

  • Roland

No way is this match over. Portugal looks tight to me, as evidenced by their poor finishing with some *very* generous opportunities. More than I can count at this point. Score should be 4 – 0 right now.

  • Ali Siddiqui

Yeah, I think that was one reason why the sudden need to replace him. Just to let him leave with his legacy instead of having him perhaps accused of illegal acts.

  • Dino

Is pretty boy Ronaldo doing anything?

  • Ali Siddiqui

I agree with Bob. Angola needs to go Kamikaze on the Portugal goal. Crack some shins and bust some heads in and of course…diving.

  • Ali Siddiqui

I think Ninj has the details on C.Ronaldo what with the running RPT on him.

  • http://www.pierretristam.com Total Football

At this point Angola must be thinking how terrible it is to have given up that early goal, how possible it would have been to pull off an uopset of sorts with a tie, as it now seems entirely within Angola’s power. There’s still time for that, but what a shame it would be if the game was lost in the first 4 minutes. Come on now antelopes, you have it in you.

Yes, to be fair to Portugal, they should have had at least one more, probably two goals from Ronaldo early on. Angola didn’t play that well, but no shame in the scoreline.

A lot better than last time the two teams met, at least.

  • Raybron

“1-0 does not reflect Portugal’s domonation of the game”

Yes, the line should have been 2-0 or 3-0 but Portugal have nothing to be proud of for only being able to finish against such a clearly unprepared side once (and early) and for looking lifeless for long stretches. Even though Argentina got the same result against Cote D’Ivoire, I felt both sides in that game were much more impressive (and entertaining).

Dud of the tournament so far.

  • Ali Siddiqui

I’m happy with how Angola played today. At least it wasn’t a total massacre. I’d be even more depressed if it turned into a blood bath of 6-0 with a few broken bones for the Angolan players.

  • Laura

Thanks for the stellar blogging, Bob. (and the opportunity for a quick trip to the gutter.) Sorry about the result for Angola. Rest those fingers!

  • Ali Siddiqui

Wow. Well, at least the idea of having at least one upset match a day is out the window.

Hey Bob don’t feel down about Angola! We all were rooting for them and they proved they could at least defend themselves well enough against the bigger boys.

  • http://ecuador.worldcupblog.org/ Trent

I think Angola can still nick a point at this WC, but even if they don’t, the effort they displayed tody will make theirs a pretty good showing in my book.

  • Daniel Lourenço

Sure, wasn’t the game of the tournament nor was it a blow out, but did we really think it would be?

Portugal showed what it was capable of in the 1st 15-20 minutes. Though they could work on their passing, they were clearly superior.

It’s all about piquing at the right time and Portugal came out the right way. Portugal traditionally doesn’t do well against teams that just sit back and defend. Whenever a Portugal player touched the ball they were quick to rush them and shut them down; credit to their defense. I think we’ll play much more attractive and effective games against more attack-minded teams, instead of teams trying to settle for a goal off a counter attack (anyone remember Greece?) Our performances in 2004 against England, Spain, Netherlands, etc were great…much more of an “open” game.

I do think they should have had more people shooting outside the box instead of always looking for Pauleta on the cross. If it wasn’t for that great save by the Angolan goalie it would’ve been 2-0, with that great strike from Maniche.

Great game? Hardly. Do we have the potential? Definately.

  • natalie

I don’ know who it was but someone said Pauleta never seemed to come through when it mattered. Well Pauleta came through and if he didn’t then we could’ve been tied with Angola 0-0
I was surprised at Luis Figo’s speed when assisting Pauleta’s goal.

It seems that when Ronaldo slightly loses his temper his ego is given a full blast. I mean he ran it out so many imes wanting to score himself and would then get tripped by an Angola player.

Another thing that disappointed me was that portuguese players would pass the ball to no one in particular thinking one of tier players are going to get their on time. For the most part they were lucky but other parts the Angolians got the ball.

I thought Portugal could have done way better than they did and for that I’m disappointed. They narrowly made it out of there and thank the heavens above they won. Scolari did not look happy at all with the results and I hope he whips those boys into shape.

Personally, I think that Nuno Valente should’ve not gotten that yellow card. And the substitution of Costinho, I think Postiga could’ve made more of an effect.

lastly, do you think portugal would’ve done better if deco were to play?

Belated thanks for your blogging (in previous games as well as today), Bob. All-in-all a justified result, from what I saw of the last 20 minutes: Portugal dominated play but only turned it into a couple of solid chances during that time. At least Portugal got over their upset problem.

  • Portugal go home

Scolari’s parents italian -> portugal catenaccio
No offense intended to Scolari, I really admire this guy… nvm
    Portugal sucks
Makes no difference that Angola is a weak team… Cristiano Ronaldo whining and Figo’s acting really get on my nerves

To “Portugal go home”: go and take some pills for the stomach, dude…

Better to have 3 points on the bag + legs for the next 6 games, than a 6-3 victory or even a good show + a goal against on the 90th minute and 1 point! ;-)
