Let’s Help Out American Samoa

By: WC Bob | April 4th, 2006 | 7 Comments »

A couple months ago I laid out a blueprint for how American Samoa can improve upon its last ranked position in the FIFA rankings. Disappointingly, the country’s football team is still ranked last and now it is drawing the attention of the mainstream media. It turns out that American Samoa has not won a match since 1983 when it knocked off the Wallis and Futuna Islands, a team not recognized by FIFA because it might only contain two guys named Wallis and Fatuna. I’m here to call on you to help American Samoa end the years of futility, starting with the World Cup this summer.

I know for a fact that American Samoa doesn’t lack for athletes. They’re just playing the wrong sport. I’ve seen plenty of their men play American football and rugby with much success. But perhaps the country lacks for football knowledge. When you live in paradise, who needs to sit around all day watching grown men kick a ball?

So what we need to do is each adopt an email friend in American Samoa. Tell him or her to check out World Cup Blog on a regular basis. Encourage them to view our LiveBlogs during matches and to contribute comments to our blogs. If you have the means, fly a couple to your homes during the World Cup and make them watch nothing but football all day long. If they don’t get hooked watching the World Cup, they never will.

Short of that, I call upon all football players - able bodied or not - to consider a move to American Samoa. In addition to clean beaches, warm waters and friendly people, chances are you’ll get a chance to play for a national team. If enough of you go there, you might even help the country move ahead of the much despised Turks & Caicos Islands in the world rankings.

Now that would be pretty cool.

If they call me, I can work for them. I’ll be their Zico (look what he has been doing for Japan).

I don’t ask much in return, just a place near the beach, food, beer, a small car, shark repellent, a pool table…

I know I can lead them to the 2010 WC. I’ll bring some Brazilian bikinis to the girls and than people there will pay 100% attention to our team.

I’ll invite old football superstars like Romario, Zico and Junior to display some fascinating moves on beach-soccer and I know they will be inspired.

In 2010 we will participate, but in 2014 we’ll go for the title.

Maybe I can get them so inspired they will call for independence too, it will not be called American Samoa anymore. Just Samoa. Republic of Samoa. Samoa Football Club, maybe. I can even write their new anthem if they want.

America Somoa whoa! What can you say?

America Somoa will make the world cup 2010 in South Africa defeating a 5th place South Aemerican team. They will thrash France 4-0, beat Spain 3-0 en route to the quater finals.

In 2014 America Somoa will win the world cup.

I can make this happen only for $1 billion.

“Where the bloody hell are you”?

In America Somoa!

America Somoa will be ranked in the top twenty in December this year only if Osama Bin Laden bombed the world and 20 countries survived. However America Soma will still be the worst team in the world.

Hey maybe America Somoa beat Turks and Caicos Islands in a stunning upset in the battle of the shittest teams on the planet. Nerds FC should represent America Somoa. Just maybe they will actually win a game.

[...] It is our favorite time of the month with FIFA providing the comic relief with its latest rankings. As was expected, there has been no change at the top or the bottom. Brazil is firmly planted in the number one spot and despite our best efforts America Samoa remains the lowest ranked team in the universe. Everyone knows these rankings are nonsense (USA is #4 now!) and we are determined to do something about it. That’s why we have the World Cup Blog Power Rankings. Your rankings – the World Cup teams from 1 to 32 – are due to bob [at] worldcupblog.org by the end of the day Thursday. We will reveal the newest Power Rankings on Friday. Until then, have a chuckle when you look at what FIFA has to say about the World Cup teams. [...]
