Latest FIFA Rankings

By: WC Bob | March 15th, 2006 | 5 Comments »

It is that time of the month where you are asked to suspend reality and to believe that FIFA’s ranking system actually makes sense. You are expected to take at face value that the United States is the fifth best team in the world despite the fact it might be the fourth best team in its World Cup group. You are asked to buy into the belief that Serbia and Montenegro is worse than 45 other teams in the world, while also accepting the notion that Iran is one of the top twenty teams. You are expected to know that Germany is merely that 22nd best team in the world (ok, this one might be right). All of these notions will, of course, be put to test this summer, but for now go ahead and have a look at where the 32 World Cup teams supposedly place in the world’s pecking order.

2 Czech Republic
3 Netherlands

[...] There aren’t too many people who take FIFA’s rankings very seriously. Using a complex system that rewards past performance more than it rewards present form, the ranking system is certainly an imperfect specimen. Nevertheless, it does give us some idea of how teams are relative to one another. Using the latest rankings, I decided to play out the World Cup under the scenario that the higest ranked teams will always advance to the next round. You might be a bit surprised by some of the teams that are tapped to come out of group play and how early some of the favorites would bow out of the tournament if it were based on ranking alone. If you look at it this way, you can really see that Groups A, G and H are weak. [...]
