Italy and Germany Re-live 1982 All Over Again

By: WC Bob | July 4th, 2006 | 16 Comments »

It was the year Michael Jackson released the album Thriller, E.T. hit the movie screens, and Cats opened on Broadway. It was also the last time that Germany and Italy met in the World Cup. Italy walked away with a 3-1 victory on that day in Spain in 1982. Below are some of the highlights from the match. Worth watching for no other reason to remind yourself of keeper Harold Schumacher’s hair and spastic ways. For those keeping track at home, Italy has beaten Germany twice in the World Cup and the two teams have also played a pair of 0-0 draws.

Even though 1982 was a final, their semi final match in 1970 was easily the best game these two have ever played. Der kaiser played with his arm strapped to his chest because he had a shoulder injury. The game was knotted up at 1-1 at the last minute by the germans. Then they traded goals in extra time, but the Italians got the winner at 4-3.

Such a beautiful match. I still remember it like if was yesterday. One of the happiest moment in my life. My mom was making panini so we could go and eat out and celebrate all night with all the other people in Genova. She got some outfit for the 3 of us brothers, I was 12, and I had red socks, white shorts and green shirt. We had this enourmous azure flag my dad made. We were rolling on the floor and jumping all over every time Italy scored, but when Germany scored its only goal even if it was almost over, my dad screamed at my mom to stop to make panini because she was bringing bad luck. She was so scared. But everything ended well and we won and it was fantastic. For days people danced in the streets, drank wine and embraced like if were a big family, all Italians and proud of it. It was primordial, drums and singing and dancing. Beautiful. It make shiver just thinking about it. I will cherish this memory for ever. Thank you for the video. Let’s hope history will repeat itself.

Italy has so much more pride and love for the skill of the game…they don’t try to knock everyone down. They really know how to play the sport !!! The way is was written and designed to be played many years ago. Soccer is not like American Football , they are to play the ball with foot skill, cordination and fast thinking. IT IS A NO CONTACT SPORT !!! What i have also noticed is that just about every team has at least one or two Italian players on it because no matter where they are born, the game is in the heart of the Italians. Again I wish them the best. Not only do they love the sport, they also love people and life. Good Luck to the Italians. Spain also plays a beautiful game…

I remember that game very well also – I remember Italy missing a penalty in the first half and getting that feeling like things were not going to go well. Italy played way over their heads from the match against Brazil in the second round (One of the best in Cup history) right through to the final – They just ran Germany into the ground.

It did not hurt that Germany had just come off the overtime marathon against France but Italy would not have been denied on that day.

Here’s to that type of a game this time around – best team to win – Germany are playing very well in the face of criticism at home, I admire that as well.

Forza Italia!!

There are 2 teams that GER does not want to meet at all. One is BRA and the other is ITA. Unfortunately, it meets ITA this time. We’ll see…

Ralph needs to take his meds….Italy has always been the victim of some very, very biased refereeing…even in that same 1982 World Cup. No problem ralph….we know it’s sour grapes from your part: Italy *has* beaten the USA afetr all :)

The home advantage for Germans will be huge, with all the fans baying for Italian blood. But the scheming Italians can be equally provoked into winning. Italy has also been more convincing than Germany in this World Cup. I would give Italy a razor thin edge to send Germany into a national mouring tomorrow.

Italy cant win as they cheated again Australia in first knock out match to get the penalty kick to score decisive goal of the match. Fortune ll not in favor of Italy to match against Germany.

gail, I don’t know what you’re talking about… Maybe not historically, but in the past years Italy has shown a lot of “beating everyone down” including pulling shirts, elbowing in the face, etc..

I predict a 0-0 borefest with Germany winning by penalties.

Sigh.

Hi, etucker. Not a 0-0 borefest afterall, huh. Simply a beautiful game of soccer, the way it was meant to be played: offence, defence, no foul-play or penalties, goal – Grosso!!! That’s right, goal again– Del Piero!!! and all in the last 2 minutes of the 2nd overtime! Now, that’s drama, that’s soccer at it’s BEST and that’s a team that warrants respect and deserves to be in the World Cup Finals 2006!!!

Oh, and did I mention, in front of a stadium full of screaming German, home-nation fans. Congratulations to all Italian fans around the world who really know what the Italy team is capable of, a team steeped in history, having won 3 World Cups and having been a part of the World Cup tournament all but 1 time. Have RESPECT people, I’m not even Italian and I do!

11/07/1982
