I hate Tommy Smith

I generally have a low opinion of US football commentators. I think it’s cos it sounds like they were the guys who weren’t good enough to talk about the NFL or NBA and they got handed the job cos no one else wanted it. They try hard, but they didn’t grow up with the game.

So I don’t expect too much. But Tommy Smith is a different breed. He’s a guy who must have watched the game growing up. His zany Irish accent makes him seem more credible (I guess). But he talks crap. He’s the guy who will pull out the big clichés like “It’s a game of two halves” and “This team has to play at their best to win the World Cup”. If I have to listen to him for a whole month, I’ll be watching the games on Telemundo.
