How to Watch BBC Online World Cup Coverage Outside the UK

By: WC Bob | June 7th, 2006 | 30 Comments »

A couple of days ago I posted about the various media outlets that will be streaming World Cup games live on the Internet. A couple of readers have sent some resources that might help you to enjoy the BBC’s online streams even if you don’t live in the UK. Since the games haven’t started yet it is hard to say whether this will work, but for those who want to give it a shot, this article has some suggestions how to do it. You have to be pretty tech savvy to understand it so hire the nerdy kid next door to figure it out for you. Feel free to drop me a line and let me know if it works for you. Best of luck in your pirating efforts.

Someone needs to set up a pirate server so we can listen to the BBC broadcasts. There are no online options to listen to the games. XM Radio Online is not carrying their WC station on their online version of their service.

I was one of the people who forwarded this on – I had heard that the BBC was on to this and I know they are relatively sophisticated over there so it may not work – of course, all the UK proxies I ahve found today are overloaded and mostly failing – wonder why?…

the other thing to try is do a search on livefooty – they are doing some streams out of china – but you have to use IE and trust plugins that are all in CHinese not to be trojaning you up – they aren’t working real well for me today but they have in the past – plus you get the game with chinese commentary….

The BBC have definitely taken the proxy idea into consideration, and it definitely won’t work (I know, I’ve tried using 2 UK proxies).

They’ve probably got a list of UK broadband service ip addresses, and if you’re not using a UK internet provider you’ve got no hope of beating this, except for one way.

You’d have to know someone in the UK who’d be willing to let you remote control their PC, i.e. view the video from their computer using something like gotomypc or whatever.

This works (I know I’ve successfully done this via my little brother’s PC back home in the UK), but there is one final option if you don’t mind viewing the games about an hour after they’ve finished.

As most of you seem to be posting from the US, given the 4-10 hour (depending on your time zone) time difference, you may be okay with watching highlights directly from the FIFA website.

Obviously you can watch them on ABC, ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNHD but for those of us that have real Irish relatives, listening to that Leprechaun impersonator on ESPN is somewhat galling.

What is it with second and third generation Irish Americans insisting on using blatently fake Irish accents.

My family came over during the last world cup and just about died laughing after I started the England / Nigeria game – hey at least it gave the game some entertainment value, as opposed to the dour 0:0.

No luck here either.

I live in Boston in the States and I’ve never heard of any second or third gen Irish speaking with fake accents. Actually many of my Irish friends who were born in Ireland have lost their accents. Its hard for me to imagine that someone on TV is actually faking it. Doesn’t make any sense.

Anyway..go to TVants and download the software, and then find CCTV5 (from China) click the link..you can watch live world cup there..It works!! For PC only though..Sorry Mac people. If anyone knows where I can hear ENGLISH radio of the cup..let me know.
Good luck people!
It takes some time to connect..so hang in there..this isnt as convenient as normal TV but I find it is pretty stable.
